"Forecast revisualizes abstractions about everything from our environ-ment to our waistlines, from the stock market to the Middle East through the eyes of cartoonists and graphic designers who have made comics with a conscience: Ward Sutton imagines a nation divided into a...   expand review  red and a blue zone; Paula Scher maps out the Northern Hemisphere of 2100; Elizabeth Amon interviews New Yorker journalist Elizabeth Kolbert on global warming; and Tom Tomorrow looks back on the legacy of Bush-Cheney. Ultimately, Forecast is an optimistic book: using humor, it encourages all of us to take responsibility for predictions of the future and to take action to affect change. Forecast is the latest installment of Nozone. Featured in the Cooper Hewitt's Design Triennial, Nozone is a decade-old political graphic design and comics zine, edited around a theme." There's nothing like classic, vintage design books by the masters, but Kimberly Elam is making her own mark, first with her Grid Systems book and now with this Typographic Systems book (2007). Her books look like classic Swiss designs, but she updates...   expand review  the examples and adds new innovations like transparent pages with markings that go over the regular pages providing insight on the design process. Just to clarify, this book deals with the shapes and form of typography (rather than the actual letterforms). Excellent content, excellent book design, simply an awesome resource for any graphic designer. Softcover, 160 pages. -the mgmnt

Perfectly timed to release during the whole streetwear craze that escalated in early 2007, this much in-demand book finally gets a stateside release (seriously, we've fielded over a 100 requests for this book, and it's a book!). Streetwear is basically an A-Z...   expand review  lexicon of who's who in the streetwear game. Each entity gets several pages with an interview slash essay and some photographs of their work. All the usual suspects are covered from the new school (Alife, 10 Deep, Crooks, Hundreds), to the design-related (Quiet Life, PAM, Ben Drury), to the old guard (Burton, Stussy, Ssur, Obey), and many others (close to 100 profiles). In my first days as a jr. designer with no typography skills, my boss told me to read a book called Stop Counting Sheep And Find Out How Type Works. It was a simple book that seemed obvious, but by the end,...   expand review  I had a lightbulb moment that opened me up to the beautiful world of typography. Stop Counting Sheep was an unusual book in that it didn't read like a textbook, more like a self-help book. It was cool back then, but these days of quick-strike knowledge, Getting It Right is like a super soaker of typographic theories and rules. It's visually powerful work. The book's strength is it shows several examples of the same text, set in different type styles, right next to each other. With these examples the lessons become crystal clear, revealing both by mistakes and corrections. Lastly, in addition to all the typographic lessons, the book offers up practical, real-world advice for print and screen (this is the first typographic book that I've encountered that addresses typographic screen issues). Softcover, 174 pages. Recommended. -the mgmnt

The music graphics book was born in the mid-nineties and died in early 2000 with over-saturation and lowered standards as a cause of death. Enough water has passed and people have learned from their mistakes. This is an excellent reintroduction to...   expand review  the modern music graphics book. It's executed near perfectly with relevent examples (many records we've had at the Lab, but even more that we haven't), clean design, and Japanese-style attention to mega-detail (it's organized by designer, painstakingly documented, and each designer has an interview). It is so effective that the book creates an illusion that these are classic record covers from 10 years ago, when they really are from yesterday. Softcover, 318 pages, 7.5" x 9.5" x .75". As things progress, the modes of learning change. A good example is skateboarding. Beginner skaters start by learning tricks (ie kickflip) that would have been considered advanced 10 years ago. Some old common tricks aren't even practiced anymore (the ho-ho plant!). The...   expand review  same thing applies to design, and this book promotes the idea. Instead of treading through the basics you see in old Bauhaus manuals, The New Basics jumps right into the heavy stuff. Concepts like dimension, scale, layers, transparency, and color have changed definitions and this book addresses them (The New Basics). In addition, the examples used are cutting edge modern citing things like Google maps, sculptures, and commercial products. This is a great book for the newbie or the ol'head that needs to get up to speed. Softcover, 246 pages. -the mgmnt

Not only is Band ID the cleanest and most comprehensive collection of music logos I've ever come across, it also made me stop and think for the first time about a number of things - things like the true relation between a...   expand review  band's logo, its music and its identity, how a band's logo can endear or villify them to fans, and who the hell actually designed some of these things. This book's got it all, from the most forehead-slappingly obvious graphics (the immortal designs of bands like the Stones, Black Flag, Chicago, Motorhead, Yes, etc.) to the great lost/underappreciated logos of our time. The book is divided up by genre - Rock, Hair Bands, Heavy, Extra Heavy, Punk, Alternative, Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B, Country, Electronic, Reggae - and each logo has the year of design, record label and designer (where available) listed right underneath. Also includes interviews with Gerard Huerta, T42Design, Invisible Creature, Chris Bilheimer and more. See if you can spot all the dope logos by our 20 Jay neighbors at Morning Breath. If you love skateboarding, check this book out. Notice how i said "Love," not "like," or "yeah, it's cool," but looove it, this book is your dream come true. Written by Sean Mortimer, who was the editor at Skateboarder magazine and co-author...   expand review  of Hawk: Occupation: Skateboarder with Tony Hawk, this book revisits Skateboard culture's history, growth, exposure, ups and downs with awesome behind the scenes interviews and anecdotes from all the important players in the game. As you can tell from the title, Stalefish: Skateboard Culture From The Rejects Who Made It,l this ain't no run of the mill history lesson. It's more like sitting down at a bar to hear Mike Vallely tell his story about how he didn't want to be the face of change for skating or hear how Tony Hawk had his first kiss at Del Mar or how Daewon Song thought that he sucked at one point. No boring "Skateboarding adapted from surfing..." commentaries, only the juicy details from the pros that made the scene what it is today. Highly recommended. -C'mish

Boogie's photography has given us a fascinating and unfiltered (and often times unsettling) look into some of the roughest and most turbulent areas of the world. From his native home of Belgrade, Serbia, to the grimy, crack-infested projects of New York City,...   expand review  and the hardest parts of Cuba and South America, Boogie's lens has been there to capture life as it happens to be. This book from Upper Playground collects his work from one week in Sao Paolo, Brazil. It is far from the postcard image of Brazil that comes to mind (no beaches, babes, or parties here). These incredible candid B&W shots show a side of the city that is seldom seen by tourists - a world of extreme poverty and struggle. But amidst the shots of prostitutes, homeless people and drug addicts are some shots (a bum smiling or the kids that play in the ghetto) that give a feeling of hope to the situation. Very powerful stuff indeed. 96 pages, hardcover. Recommended. -snackmaster
