2K Gingham
Cookie's Surf Shop Shirt by Margaret Kilgallen
Sweet. One of the most prized images from west coast art star Margaret Kilgallen. I've seen this in person at galleries in SF and the linework is impeccable. She was truly a pioneer in the entire west coast folk revival movement. It's so sad we had to lose her so early in her career. Keep the art alive! Standard fit.

2K Gingham
Edie Shirt by Nat Finkelstein
Look at those eyes, those lips - you're a star baby! Brooklyn photographer Nat Finkelstein brings us a choice shot from his portfolio. He was Andy Warhol's unofficial in-house photographer in the crazy 70's in NY. Here we have the young muse Edie beautifully captured as a sophisticated lady. Nat makes her too easy to love. Standard fit.

Stanley Kubrick has gotten his mug on several very cool shirts in the past, but this illustration by the UK's Jake takes the cake (seriously not meaning to rhyme there). Love the brow-action and hand-written font for extra-character.

Barry McGee
Things Are Getting Better Book
Great collection of work from SF grafitti legend turned gallery star Barry McGee. This book was published for his Things Are Getting Better Exhibit at the Museum Het Domein Sittard in the Netherlands and features plenty of his paintings, drawings, and photos. Not a lot of his early graf work as TWIST in here, but more of his later gallery work like his infamous hobo characters, Q-bert style cube patterns, collabos with friends (Paper Rad's dog drawings are awesome and Os Gemeos graf letters are just sick) plus plenty of interesting (and random!) personal photos. I actually got a chance to catch his huge show over at Deitch Projects a few years ago and was lucky enough to see the fine details of his work in person, but for those who can't catch a show, the bright color photos in this book are pretty damn good too. Softcover edition.

Bobbito Garcia
Where'd You Get Those? Book
It seems like this book has been in the making forever. It's been at least 6 or 7 years since we first started hearing the rumors that Bobbito was working on a book about sneakers. At the time, nobody had done anything like that, there were no "specialty" sneaker spots downtown and ebay hadn't even come into realization yet. Every once in a while, you'd hear another something about it (grumbling about the UK sneaker book, etc), but weather it was actually going to happen always seemed up in the air. And now here, in the thick of sneaker mania and reissue fever, comes Bob's book, landing like a brick on an expectant culture that has grown since his idea started. And it's oh so official. 265 pages covering the years of 1960 to 1987, with a particular focus on basketball shoes and an incredible attention to detail. Brands, colorways, editions, boxes, advertisements, history, customization, legends and personal stories- each shoe from each year is broken down with incredible accuracy by the people who were there to see and wear them. This crack team is made up of about 20 sneaker nuts including old school court legends like Pee Wee Kirkland and Joe "The Hammer" Hammond, connoisseurs and fiends like MC Serch, Kurious, Pete Nice, Jorge Pabon aka Fabel, Schott Free, Dante Ross and others. It's everything you'd want it to be- informative, entertaining, funny, designed by Brent Rollins, the whole bit. Couldn't be more recommended.

Boogie
It's All Good Book
You've probably heard of much-lauded photographer Boogie and his amazing black & white snapshots of Brooklyn life at ArtCoup.com, but Brooklyn-based publisher Powerhouse books has done the art(sy) world a great favor by issuing the first proper collection of his work. It's All Good is assembled from pictures that Boogie took in some of NYC's grimiest hoods (Bed-Stuy, Bushwick, Queens) - pictures that capture a side of life that a lot of us will hear about but never truly know: dudes with hoods pulled over they eyes and two glocks drawn, crackheads and junkies living in squalor that would kill most, little kids having fun in the midst of it all because they don't know any better. The candid and incredible B&W snaps are interspersed with graphic anecdotes from some of the subjects that Boogie has photographed. To say this collection is "entertaining" would be an insult to the people who had to keep living after these pictures were taken; to say that it's sobering and endlessly fascinating would be more on point. The book is designed proper, too, with fully printed front and back covers on heavy hardcover stock, and the photographs are reproduced on 12" x 8" pages. 136 pages. Highly recommended.

Daft Punk's Electroma DVD
IN-STORE VALUE ADD: Buy this DVD at either the LA store or NY annex and receive a free full-size theatrical movie poster. (F'reals! Sorry, offer not valid online.) Daft Punk's feature length directorial debut is finally available for home viewing (for those who don't get down with film festivals) and Vice didn't skimp on the presentation. The DVD is housed in a sturdy and interestingly-assembled "SteelBook" case and comes with a 40+ page booklet featuring some ace full-color stills from the film. If you didn't catch the film in theaters or by "other means," Electroma is simply a beautiful film - wordless, well scored (though not by DP) and featuring some totally unforgettable imagery. At times it's like a robot version of Gus Van Sant's Gerry. Mostly you just gotta see it for yourself. Recommended.

Hamburger Eyes
Hamburger Eyes: Inside Burgerworld Book
Hallelujah! After years of slanging zines (and creating the awesome Photo Epicenter), the Hamburger Eyes crew has finally come around to putting out an official book! We've been praising with these guys for a while, carrying their early xeroxed issues and doing a show at our LA store. When will people finally get the message: Hamburger Eyes destroys monotony! If you're not aware of the movement, just think about every time you saw some cool, inexplicable, or completely random that gave you a jolt of brain juices. Seconds later you say to yourself: "Damn, I wish I had a camera..." Well, Hamburger people always have their cameras with them, shoot old school film rolls, and capture the most beautifully random moments evah. Hardcover, approximately 200 pages, black and white. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Jamel Shabazz
Back In The Days Book
Jamel Shabazz's work should be known to all. If Bambaataa was the grandfather of hip-hop, Shabazz is the James Brown of hip-hop photography. With the surge in popularity of hip-hop culture in the last 5 years, Shabazz's work has been an important link to the early 80s roots, gracing the pages of magazines and record covers. And if you've seen any of his work, then you've been grabbed by the dimensionality of his photographs: the background, the pose, the gear, the expression, the color. Now imagine an entire book of Shabazz's photography, the information overload told through a reoccurring theme: the "cool pose." Fab Five Freddy does an enlightening job in the book's introduction breaking down the cultural significance of the pose, and once you understand that, this book becomes so much more. Aesthetically this book is a blinged out 10, no doubt, but add the near-history context (this was only 20 years ago), and this book is invaluable. Let me stop with the muddle, peep some pages and let Brooklyn in the house. Over 100 full color pages with end word by Jamel Shabazz.

Margaret Kilgallen
In The Sweet Bye & Bye Book
This is the most comprehensive book on the work of Margaret Kilgallen I've ever seen though it is actually the catalog for the 2005 show at the REDCAT gallery. The prolific California-based artist passed away in 2001, but left behind a plethora of works that are a tribute to the dying hand made crafts of the past (in particular: hand painted signage, folk art, letter press print, and hobo train writers). Her art has inspired dozens of fellow artists (including husband and collaborator Barry McGee) with it's modern folk feel and hand-drawn aesthetic, which has now been coined as "New Folk" or "Urban Rustic." This handsome hardcover book features over 200 pages with brilliant, full color photos of hundreds of her paintings, sketches, and drawings. There are also amazing photos of her murals and installations as well as essays and an interview from which you can truly get the scope of her work and where she was coming from. Take a break from the crazy high-tech world we live in and delve into Margaret's world with this book. Highly Recommended.

M-Audio
MicroTrack II Recorder
OVERVIEW
The redesigned Microtrack II adds even more professional features to the extremely popular original (the best professional level, portable recorder we've encountered). This updated model adds an extended input gain range, analog input limiter, faster file transfer rate, seamless recording of files beyond 2GB in size and more to the already robust design making it the best portable option for recording DJ sets and live performances. It's as easy as plugging the mixer output into the inputs and hitting record. Once you are done recording, simplys drag and drop to get your files onto your PC or MAC with the ultra-fast USB 2.0 connection. And for those who like to capture live samples via microphone (noises or vocals), the Microtrack also includes high fidelity mic pre-amps with phantom power (now at 48v), enabling you to use everything from a high-end studio mic or the included mini mic.
USES
- record dj sets
- record vocals
- record audio samples
- listen to files
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
For file management and computer connectivity, the Microtrack is heads above DAT machines (the popular choice for mobile recording). You can record both in WAV (up to 24-bit/96kHz) and MP3 formats (320kbps/48kHz). The Microtrack records onto CompactFlash and Microdrive cards (sold separately), and when plugged into your computer, the Microtrack appears as a hard drive for easy file management. The USB connection also charges the internal lithium battery (power plug also included).
The list of features continues with a large digital screen with an interface similar to the iPod (which can be dimmed for discreet use in dark rooms). There are both RCA and 1/8" outputs for monitoring. Connect the RCA outputs to an amp and use the Microtrack for playback, or plug in the included headphones and use it like an iPod. There are separate left and right level controls with peak indicators, and dedicated buttons for record, hold, play, etc. Extras included: earbuds, t-shaped stereo mini-mic, usb cable, usb power supply, protective carrying case and mic pouch as well as editing software.
OUR OPINION
The MicroTrack is small, easy to use, and most importantly, it seamlessly integrates with your computer. Record your DJ set, save it as an MP3, and publish it on your website; or record a live vocal or sample, save it as a WAV, and use it in your production. And with the version II updates, M-Audio just made a good thing even better. Recommended.

Os Gemeos
The Flowers In This Garden Were Planted By My Grandparents Book
Os (freakin) Gemeos! These Brazilian artists have fascinated us since they became cult graf heroes in the pages 12oz. Prophet in the mid-nineties. Since then, they've blown up to Barry McGee levels working with Deitch, hip europeans, that company with the swoosh logo, and other wealthy institutions. However, like McGee, you'll always be reminded of their awesomeness by a spontaneous street sighting or some ridiculous mural in Coney Island. I could be wrong, but this might be the first official monograph of their work, published on occasion of their first museum show in the Netherlands. The book is divided into sections: public work juxtaposed with street portraits, sketchbook pages, and installation images. Full color, square-bound softcover, approximately 170 pages. Limited to 2500 copies.

Second Cousins
Rush: Special Edition CD
LAB U.S. EXCLUSIVO. Limited repress of #3 in the Money Studies mix series, now in a full-size digipak. What's left to say about this one? Blu Jemz and Roger Yamaha one of the finest mixes ever to pass through the Lab, and hands down my favorite in the MS catalog. The definition of a sleeper, too - when I first started working at Lab, the Diplo and Spank Rock mixes were flying off the shelves while this one languished, people all like "what the fuck is a Blu Yamaha Rush Cousin?" But once the word got out, so did the copies and this one went OOP with the quickness. We're happy to present Rush to you again, for the edification of those who were left wondering. Enjoy. Highly recommended.

Shepard Fairey
E Pluribus Venom (Obey) Book - SIGNED
LAB EXCLUSIVO: Each copy of E Pluribus Venom purchased at the Lab is signed by artist Shepard Fairey.
Shepard Fairey's work really needs no introduction. His Obey campaign has blown up to epic proportions spawning everything from a clothing line to his own record label. It's incredible to think that it all began with a simple sticker featuring the face of a beloved dead wrestler. His latest book entitled "E Pluribus Venom" features his recent works that were up in the Jonathan Levine Gallery (NYC). This massive book features both the Chelsea and the Dumbo gallery shows beautifully photographed highlighted with the technical details of each piece. When it comes down to it, Fairey's style and message has remained consistent throughout. The iconic red, black, and tan colors and message of dissent to authority and questioning the government is still a constant and doesn't look like it'll be changing any time soon. About 140 pages, hard cover. Recommended.

Surfing Photographs From The 70s Taken By Jeff Divine Book
Wow, what can you even say about a book like this? Breathtaking and intimate full color snapshots of early surf culture fill up every page, and with each one you feel you're looking at a time and place that's completely gone now, never to return. It's like getting to peep a time traveler's slideshow from his vacation to the past, because Jeff Divine took pictures back then that would look right at home in, say, Vice today. Divine grew up in late 60s / early 70s La Jolla, when surfers still effortlessly bore the trademarks that surfers ever since have mimicked: cooool long hair, board shorts, moustaches, generally not giving a fuck. Aside from a brief introduction, the pictures are left to do all the talking, and that's a great thing. Divine's photos capture everything from standard big wave fare to cosmic vans being hand-detailed, spectators watching a heat, or my favorite - the sloppy, hand-painted sign reading "NO UNLOCALS - IF YOU DON'T LIVE HERE DON'T SURF HERE." If I had a coffee table, I'd put this on it. Approx. 100 pages.

Takashi Homma
New Waves Book
This book is genius. If you don't know Takashi Homma's work already, get ready for a truly different experience. I say it's genius for 2 reasons. One, it's possibly the best stress relieving coffee table book. If you or a guest wanna feel relaxed, have them take a seat, serve them a drink and have them peer into Takashi's serene ocean photography. It really does you good(especially if you live in a city like NY)! The second reason why this is genius is because he's carved out the best niche job ever. Think about the next time someone asks him what he does. Wouldn't you like to answer, "I take photographs of the beach, what do you do?" I would trade with him in a sec. Simply awesome. Full color photos printed in large format 11" x 15". Soft cover, over a 100 pgs. Recommended.

Technics
RP-DH1200 Headphones
The new top of the line from Technics raises the bar for durable, comfortable and quality sounding headphones. The RP-DH1200 has also been designed to match the look of their SL-DZ1200 cd turntable with a clean, polished design and Technics' signature strobe dots around the earpieces. In addition to the new look, they have made some major functional and structural improvements to their previous DJ headphones. These include larger 50mm drivers, a higher power input capacity (3500mW), and perhaps most importantly- a one-sided detachable cord, which eliminates a major source of headphone breakage. The joints between the earpieces and the headband, another area where dj headphones are commonly broken, have also been significantly reinforced; so these should be Technics most durable headphones yet. Everything about the construction is robust- thick padded headband, large cushioned earpieces, they weigh almost 5 pounds- providing both comfort and the ability to block outside noise. High recommendation for djing and studio use. Comes with a leather carrying pouch.

In the latest installment of the TTV saga, witness DJ Q-bert visit the UK for DMC 2005 and chill with DJ Yeah (youngest scratch DJ), the secret origin of Skratchy Seal, Beat Boxing + Floor Squeaking with Trihedral, funky-ass tutting from Bionic Man and Pharcyde, the making of the QFO, and of course... LOTS of freestyle scratch sessions with Q and his homies from around the globe (like Misaya + Kouji of Japan, Vajra, Rafik, and Tyra). Features tons of extras too - most notably a bunch of old school TTV clips from the Thud Rumble vaults.

TV Carnage: Ouch Television My Brain Hurts DVD
Classic Carnage! The very first installment in the saga from '96, finally reissued on DVD. If you're not familiar with TVC, each volume features hours and hours of excruciatingly bad television, edited down into a more digestable (but still unbearable) chunk by some Canadian genius. Even though the series was young and the editing more primitive, Ouch Technology My Brain Hurts contains all the TV Carnage hallmarks we've come to expect through the years: bad public access, out-of-touch news reporters, French Canadians singing the blues, Gary Coleman doing any number of embarrassing things in front of audiences, the Junior Village People, and so much more (or less). The clips play for much longer than in later volumes, which is a good or bad thing depending on your cringe tolerance. Haven't even had time to dig into the bonus features, but it looks like there are plenty. The commentary tracks are always great, too, but dude should go back to disguising his voice 20/20 style! Highly recommended.

TV Carnage: When Television Attacks DVD
DVD edition. The story behind these is that some guy Pinky in Montreal records years and years worth of bad television of every sort imaginable, then condenses it into 75 minutes of smartly edited, grandly thematic snippets. Kind of like a giant tv megamix with all the best stupid shit you've never seen and wouldn't want to wait for. It's fast, hilarious and wildly entertaining. Trust in Pinky.

Vice
The Vice Photo Book
Of all the books Vice has put together so far, this has gotta be their most ambitious: a huge (336 pages) oversized (13"x10.5" or so) hardcover collection of (you guessed it!) the most provocative, disgusting and sometimes just beautiful pictures from the mag's existence. Hope you got a sturdy coffee table.
Full color, with a combination of glossy and matte paper stocks. The book is divided into six sections: The Magazine (a history of photography in Vice), The Photographers (with brief bios and interviews for each), Photojournalism (aka "the realness"), Fashion (aka "the fakeness"), Music (self-explanatory) and The Photos, which is just that - pictures that speak for themselves with little explanation. If you ever wanted to see a barely conscious Ed Templeton bleeding all over after falling off a halfpipe in France and cracking his head, the effects of Toxic Shock Syndrome, a monkey on stilts, or boobs (plenty of boobs)... believe it or not, the Vice Photo Book has you covered. Recommended.

Vice
Vice's Do's & Don'ts Book
They should have put this one out first. This book features 260 pages of every single Dos and Don'ts published in Vice magazine plus a bunch of new stuff. The Dos & DonÌts have been running ever since Vice started, and itÌs probably the one nail-down asset that has kept them around so long. Ironic anti-politics and hipper than thou guides to life will get you places, but thereÌs nothing like seeing candid pictures of cool people & idiots on the street, accompanied by the best photo captions ever. ItÌs a legitimate phenom. Measure your visual coolness (am I a do or a donÌt? quickly shuffling to the middle of the magazine to find out); laugh at the amazing fashion ineptitude of middle america/canada; ponder the coin toss fate of the ones that could have gone either way....so easy to get stuck in this book, but so amusing. Full color, and the pictures are a lot bigger. Recommended, and with a note on usage: store in the dumpy room so you can savor it longer.

Vice Guide To Travel DVD
Vice's first installment in their DVD series is nothing short of insane (what would you expect from the dudes at Vice). The series features short documentaries on different themes, and for this one it's travel... to places you would never, ever want to go to even if you had to (of course). Think of it as National Geographic on drugs. So Vice sent out correspondents to various strange, and extremely dangerous locales such as Chernobyl, Pakistan, Paraguay, Rio, Beirut, Congo, and Bulgaria - and documented life as it happens and the adventures that occur. The locales and stories are truly eye-openin, fascinating and make you glad you didn't have to go experience it yourself. My boy Dave was one of the "lucky" correspondents and had the pleasure of going to the dark, deep jungles of the Congo to search for Mokele-mbembe (the last living dinosaur). On his hunt, he witnessed mind-reading shamans, pygmys, hooker villages, scorching heat, and other truly bizarre shit. You'll see him take mind altering elixirs, trek through the deepest rain forest, and give interviews while playing his drums with a bunch of naked, ass-shaking prostitutes in the back --- crazyness! But this is just a smidgen of what you get on the DVD - other adventures include chillen in the slums of Rio and going to a Baile Funk party (and getting shot at), meetings with PLO boy scouts and black market nuclear warhead dealers that hang with Osama, and more. Not for those that can't hang with the heavy shit. 7 shorts in all, plus a gang of extras. Presented in a hard cover, 72-page, full color book featuring interviews with the correspondents and pictures from all the weird places.

Treehugger
We Are Happy To Serve You Mug
A definite design masterpiece, and it's functional. Shota the Database got me one of these as part of the Lab's annual inter-office Secret Santa, and it has quickly become my favorite drinking cup. For those who don't know, this graphics on the mug are featured on deli coffee cups all over the NYC, it's as New York as the footlong and knish combo at MSG. The maker of the mug version really thought this one out, replicating the shape and approximate size of the original. The best part of the cup is the thickness and matte finish... ahh, it feels great in your hand. The finishing detail is that they've included a raised strip, replicating the area where the paper is glued together (never realized how functional for grip this is). Everyone loves this thing. Highly recommended.

William Eggleston's Guide Book
The definitive book by the godfather of color photography. Let's get one thing straight: all this point & shoot, amateur looking photography painstakingly done by professionals, color wash, normal people, everyday object stuff owes everything to William Eggleston. With his "Guide" exhibit at MoMA and this accompanying book, he broke down all the rules about photography as "art" and gave us a completely new way of seeing the world. . His photographs are these amazing silent incidental creepshows from everyday life, the kind of stuff that you first see and think "anybody could do that" or "these are nothing special." Then the quiet life of it all starts to crawl up your back and you realize that this guy has a fucking razor sharp vision into his surroundings- and he isn't trying to "create" any new reality through funny camera tricks, weird angles or overly saturated film processing, he's just presenting what it is in a way that you've never experienced before. And his use of color is out of control. It might take you a couple sittings with this book to truly "get it," but once you do, these images stick with you forever. The book is designed in a 9" x 9" format, hardcover with 112 pages.
