This books offers a look at the entire career of skater slash designer slash artist Andy Howell. The book is presented in a very personal way, there's a good amount of text and the layout borrows styles of old skate zines and skate mags. The story begins with his youth days in Virginia Beach, his early influences, and his rise to pro skater. These stories are illuminated by quotes, vintage photos, old skate products, and skate mag excerpts. If you grew up in the same period, this stuff is quite incredible. For the designers, the book really picks up with the chapter on New Deal skateboard company. Howell provided the visual direction for this super-influential company (recognized as one of the forces that shifted skate graphics to more of an urban direction). The book proceeds into a lengthy section on Howell's paintings. And just when you think it should end, you've only gone halfway through the book. The book gets deeper into Andy's drawings, early urban skating in nyc, starting new companies, and much more. This book is much more than a design book, it's more like an well illustrated manual on the DIY life. And if that's not enough, the book comes with 2 accompanying DVDs. Hardcover, over 300 pages.

Plan B: Virtual Reality DVD

What's the best skate video of all time? Shackle Me Not and Hokus Pokus for elevating the artform of vhs recorders and fish eye lenses (and Matt Hensley)? Video Days lowriding with Gonz and Guy listening to Jackson 5? Mouse with Spike Jonze production and a new way a running things? My money is on Virtual Reality. In relative terms of knocking shit out the box, Virtual Reality made videos released the same year look like videos from 3 years past. Even after a couple years, it was still the most up to date video. Starting from the split screen intro, Virtual brought a new wider scope to skating. Danny Way, Colin McKay, Mike Carroll, Sean Sheffey, Rick Howard, and Rodney Mullen in the cut. Recommended.

Bootleg Sessions v.2 (Fixed Gear) DVD

All the fixed gear heads probably know the deal already, but I'll spell it out for the noobz out there: The Bootleg Sessions crew is a group of fixed gear bike riders and cycling enthusiasts who are out to document the "infinite number of ways to have fun on a bicycle." Set up and arranged like a traditional skate or BMX vid, Bootleg Projects shows riders ripping it up in all corners of the globe, from London, Tokyo & NYC to small town action in places like San Marcos, Texas (outlet shopping!). The tricks range from flatland balancing acts (the crew from Indianapolis will push your wig back with this stuff) to stunts typically seen on BMX bikes, like gap jumping and even grinding ledges. Definitely a cool look into what's new and current in the fixed gear / bike messenger scene.

First time DVD reissue of Stereo's first two skate videos. Stereo has always done its own thing, emphasizing art and jazz, as well as technical skating. This dynamic comes through in these videos whether it's the skating style, the camera style, the fact that it was shot on real film (non-digital), or the coolout soundtracks (featuring Tommy Guerrero amongst others). A Visual Sound is the company's first video from 1994 and features Mike Daher, Ethan Fowler, Mike Frazier, Greg Hunt, Jason Lee, Chris Pastras, Matt Rodriguez, and Carl Shipman. Tincan Folklore is from 1996 and features a similar lineup. Bonus features include new commentary by Jason Lee and Chris Pastras.

Small messenger style bag from Obey, which comes with a 15" neoprene laptop sleeve (which also tucks into a pocket inside the bag). The main compartment features several organization pockets, and there's an extra zipper pocket on the back as well. The shoulder strap has an adjustable pad, and the main flap closes via velcro and buckle. The outside is constructed from tough nylon, with a wool exterior along the bottom.

P.J. Ladd's Wonderful, Horrible, Life DVD

Have you ever made a shitty movie or skate video with your friends? It's low budget and the acting or skating sucks balls, but you have so much fun and you even get to score it with your favorite music, Scorsese style. Basically this video is the best ever "bros just fucking around" video. It's got all the elements: bad filming, bad skating, credits that are longer than the video, and on and on. Threre is one crucial difference. Some of the skating in this is totally mind blowing. If you've been out of skating for a while, this is a must see. PJ Ladd's part is like skate gold. It's that raw shit you dream about, just some kid that's totally ill going for it with so much style. Ladd's done bigger and better tricks recently but nothing that has this kind of energy. If you're getting old and fat like me, this will make you cry for the days of just hanging out and skating, not worrying about bills, taxes and all that shit. I really can't stress how this video captures everything that's good about being young and skating and having fun. With parts from at-the-time soon-to-be pros PJ Ladd, Ryan Gallant and Jeremy Rodgers and stylish additional parts from their Boston crew, the skating is top notch, the music is great and Ladd hits with one of the best music choices for a part ever. I don't know, I just can't say enough how many times I've watched this and been totally entertained. When it came out it was in my DVD player for like 6 months and is still in constant rotation. A must own skate video, one of the best of the 00 decade.

Flip Skateboards Presents Extremely Sorry DVD

3rd video in one of skating's best series

Five years in the making, "Extremely Sorry" is the third release in the trilogy of Flip Skateboards' Sorry video series. The world famous Flip Team has evolved over time, but their original spirit and diversity remains intact. Sadly, during the time of filming this latest production, one of Flip's talented younger riders (Shane Cross), was fatally injured in a motorcycle accident (which also left Flip team-mate Ali Boulala in critical condition). Extremely Sorry is dedicated to the memory of Shane Cross. Named as a tongue in cheek mockery of the X-Games style of mainstream skateboard competition, Extremely Sorry features Geoff Rowley, Mark Appleyard, David Gonzalez, Rodrigo T, Ali Boulala, Luan Oliveira, Bob Burnquist, Rune Glifberg, Tomy Penny, Lance Mountain, Shane Cross (RIP), and others. 53 minutes.

Vintage skate masterpiece now on DVD, here's our original VHS review circa 2000: "We've been on a search for older skate videos, but they're just not around. Heard that Real makes a run then burns the masters. Fortunately H-Street, who have always been on the marketing tip, kept their masters and today bring you the H-Street Special Edition series. These are direct copies from the master so it's probably better than the one you taped off your friend back in the day. We'll this is the first H-Street video (circa 88) and probably the most influential skate video of its time. It knocked the Powell kids out the box and made way for start-ups armed with video cameras and fish-eyes. I must have watched it over 100 times: all the stupid sayings, those bugged-out no complies, and those punk songs you can't get out of head. Let me refresh your memory: Matt Hensley makes his worldwide debut in this one with his historic sidewalk scene and fakie airs on the launch ramp. Supersonic Skatecamp: "h-h-hell concave. Once you go to hell, you can't come back." Mini-Ramp madness. Stalefish over the ladder. Danzig look-a-like Art Godoy. One-footed ollies. "Page-Mill forever." Danny Way's teenage debut and much more. If you have never seen this video before, this review makes no sense. This video ain't for everyone, but if it is for you, our job is done." Recommended.

Back in the wee history of skate vid making, this was the undisputed champ, a suburban pre-teen legend which only the luckiest got a chance to see. I didn't even skate, but I was itching to see this Animal Chin thing. Upon fifteen year inspection, the matching neon outfits, ridiculous screenplay and acting scenes are straight up Powell misfires, but you can't hold back the original Bones Brigade of Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Steve Cab, Tommy Guerrero and Mike McGill- not to mention the excitement of the mega ramp with hidden sections. An essential piece of skate history... This deluxe double disc DVD includes the original version, commentary version, 44 minute documentary, outtakes, deleted scenes, and video tunes.
