This books offers a look at the entire career of skater slash designer slash artist Andy Howell. The book is presented in a very personal way, there's a good amount of text and the layout borrows styles of old skate zines and skate mags. The story begins with his youth days in Virginia Beach, his early influences, and his rise to pro skater. These stories are illuminated by quotes, vintage photos, old skate products, and skate mag excerpts. If you grew up in the same period, this stuff is quite incredible. For the designers, the book really picks up with the chapter on New Deal skateboard company. Howell provided the visual direction for this super-influential company (recognized as one of the forces that shifted skate graphics to more of an urban direction). The book proceeds into a lengthy section on Howell's paintings. And just when you think it should end, you've only gone halfway through the book. The book gets deeper into Andy's drawings, early urban skating in nyc, starting new companies, and much more. This book is much more than a design book, it's more like an well illustrated manual on the DIY life. And if that's not enough, the book comes with 2 accompanying DVDs. Hardcover, over 300 pages.

Bones Brigade: The Search For Animal Chin - Special Edition 2DVD

classic vintage skate video

Back in the wee history of skate vid making, this was the undisputed champ, a suburban pre-teen legend which only the luckiest got a chance to see. I didn't even skate, but I was itching to see this Animal Chin thing. Upon fifteen year inspection, the matching neon outfits, ridiculous screenplay and acting scenes are straight up Powell misfires, but you can't hold back the original Bones Brigade of Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Steve Cab, Tommy Guerrero and Mike McGill- not to mention the excitement of the mega ramp with hidden sections. An essential piece of skate history... This deluxe double disc DVD includes the original version, commentary version, 44 minute documentary, outtakes, deleted scenes, and video tunes.

Ed Templeton
Deformer Book

Third book from skater-artist Ed Templeton. Personally, I am a fan of Ed's work. It's gripping, engaging, sexual, pubic, teenage, dark, and always entertaining on several levels (from cheap shock to artsy deeper meaning). Deformer is a collection of photographs, drawings, and collages that loosely serves as an auto-biography. Beginning with Ed's personal adolescent pictures and scrapbook moments (his embarrassing report card is awesome), the book slowly builds into a inferno of sex, youth, and death. Yeah, sounds like an overstatement, but really, the book has an epic song quality to it. You're bombarded with images (and nudity) in unrestricted layouts... part thrash metal, part jazz. Hardcover, 166 pages, 12" x 9.5". Recommended.

H-Street: Shackle Me Not DVD

Vintage skate masterpiece now on DVD, here's our original VHS review circa 2000: "We've been on a search for older skate videos, but they're just not around. Heard that Real makes a run then burns the masters. Fortunately H-Street, who have always been on the marketing tip, kept their masters and today bring you the H-Street Special Edition series. These are direct copies from the master so it's probably better than the one you taped off your friend back in the day. We'll this is the first H-Street video (circa 88) and probably the most influential skate video of its time. It knocked the Powell kids out the box and made way for start-ups armed with video cameras and fish-eyes. I must have watched it over 100 times: all the stupid sayings, those bugged-out no complies, and those punk songs you can't get out of head. Let me refresh your memory: Matt Hensley makes his worldwide debut in this one with his historic sidewalk scene and fakie airs on the launch ramp. Supersonic Skatecamp: "h-h-hell concave. Once you go to hell, you can't come back." Mini-Ramp madness. Stalefish over the ladder. Danzig look-a-like Art Godoy. One-footed ollies. "Page-Mill forever." Danny Way's teenage debut and much more. If you have never seen this video before, this review makes no sense. This video ain't for everyone, but if it is for you, our job is done." Recommended.

Acid Drop Book

Everyone wishes they had more photos from their youth. Professional photographer Kenneth Cappello unearthed these photos from a shoebox his mom stashed away for over 20 years. What he found were his lost photographs of the 1980s Houston suburban skate "scene." This isn't early pictures of Tony Hawk or Christian Hosoi, it's local rippers acid dropping off station wagons, ho-ho plants in the schoolyard, indy-airs off home-made launch ramps, street ollies, drive-way bonelesses and more. Foreword by Beautiful Losers curator Aaron Rose. This is a Aperture edition in conjunction with Tiny Vices, edition of 100 copies. Softcover, 7.25" x 9", 96 pages.

Nike: Nothing But The Truth DVD

The much-hyped, first-ever Nike skate film (it's shot movie style). As expected, no expense was spared whether in the marquee skate team or the expert filming & editing. They even got Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo to do the soundtrack. As previously mentioned, this is a film rather than a "video", so you'll notice more depth and more incredible camera shots than your usual skate dvd. Features an excellent mix of new and older skaters including Brian Anderson, Reese Forbes, Chet Childress, Gino Iannucci, Todd Jordan, Lance Mountain, and many others. 70 minutes.

Plan B: Virtual Reality DVD

What's the best skate video of all time? Shackle Me Not and Hokus Pokus for elevating the artform of vhs recorders and fish eye lenses (and Matt Hensley)? Video Days lowriding with Gonz and Guy listening to Jackson 5? Mouse with Spike Jonze production and a new way a running things? My money is on Virtual Reality. In relative terms of knocking shit out the box, Virtual Reality made videos released the same year look like videos from 3 years past. Even after a couple years, it was still the most up to date video. Starting from the split screen intro, Virtual brought a new wider scope to skating. Danny Way, Colin McKay, Mike Carroll, Sean Sheffey, Rick Howard, and Rodney Mullen in the cut. Recommended.
