Premiere compilation from the ZZK label, highlighting some of the best "cumbia digital" coming out of Argentina right now. When Diplo played at these guys' club (Zizek) in Buenos Aires last year, he flipped over the stuff they gave him and blew it up on the Mad Decent podcast the next week. Now everyone's warming to these off-kilter sounds and there's even an American label (our Cali homies Bersa Discos) dedicated to spreading the word. Here we get 17 tracks from across the spectrum of this young genre - and by "young," I mean that this is basically the first collection of its kind, and old crusties in Argentina still look down their noses at "neo-cumbia" the same way baile funk was so reviled in Brazil. IT'S FOR THE KIDS! Here are some tunes to check - most start out slow, but let 'em play through and they heat up nicely: El Hijo De La Cumbia's "La Mara Tomasa(1)," El Remelon's "Pikatxu(2)" as well as their remix of Dead Menems' "Taliban del Amor(3)," El Trip Selector's "Coombia Del Piano Triste(4)," Bersa Discos label head Oro11's "El Cangrejo(5)," Marcel Fabian's "Sed de Mal(6)" and Axel K Soundsystem with "Bajonazo(7)." 17 tracks; 71 minutes. Recommended.
