One of the silver linings of MJ's recent passing is that everybody really got into some of the man's more obscure tracks. Sure, "Billie Jean" was the most played song last week, but for the whole of that weird weekend you ...   expand review  could turn on the radio and hear any selection of the man's more obscure album cuts and joints from back in the day. With some supremely eerie timing, Slow To Speak has compiled two of those lesser known MJ tracks here on this 12". Side A features "The Lady In My Life(1)," originally released on Thriller, while the flip features The Jacksons' "I Am Love(2)," taken from Dancing Machine. Just like every other Slow To Speak release, this one is very limited and the cover is silk screened and very snazzy looking. Recommended. -Hires

Bob Sinclar makes music for the people. He's not afraid of being slightly cheesy and he pulls out every trick in the book. Joshua knows how to build house tracks right. "Juice(1)" is stormer from the onset, but Joshua manipulates it so the energy only increases. That sinister bassline is the main weapon, but you'll also get the crowd with the sporadic "What The Fuck ...   expand review  Is Juice" samples from Dave Chappelle. If you can't get enough of that bassline, go for the DJ Tool version(2) that goes straight into the meat of the track. No filler here either, as b-side "Shiz(3)" is a great techno-ish house track with a bit of jazz. Again, notice the professional build-up, it sneaks up on you. -the mgmnt

2002 release from the massive Africanism crew (something like 20 of the biggest dance producers). "Takemussa(1)" was produced by Soha aka the duo of DJ Gregory and Julien Jabre. Latest in Yellow's Africanism series. In this issue, Bob Sinclair revisits the house classic "Voices" by KC Flight. If you don't know about the original, it's time to brush up on your house history. Arguably the genre-defining tribal house track, "Voices" also ...   expand review  features one of the most recognizable choruses in house history. But most of all, it's the movement of the track (the journey effect) that really warrants the abused "classic" title. A rather ominous task to remake it, but using original KC Flightt raps and a taught adherence to the original structure, Sinclair has done an admirable job. Much like when Kenny Dope approaches a classic, Sinclair uses restorer-like approach, utilizing modern studio techniques to recreate the instrumentation (giving it more of a polished sound) without overdoing it. For those who never liked the KC Flight rap, you also get the handy dub version on the flip. -the mgmnt

Slow To Speak continue to re-educate our burnt ears with three tracks from the Bob Marley catalog. Here's what they have to say: "The music of Bob Marley & has suffered some of the worst fans in musical history, truly! I ...   expand review  can think of no better example of good music that has been wholly distorted, contextually decimated & stripped of any original ingenuity & intelligence than Marley’s catalog." Wow. On the a-side you get a Bill Laswell dub version of "Rebel Music(1)," while on the flip there's the original versions of "Them Belly Full(2)" (such wicked instrumentation) and the Bob standard "Natural Mystic(3)." As an integral part of the early Chicago acid house scene, DJ Pierre released numerous classics and anthems under his own name and several aliases. Dre Skull is on fire right now. Fresh off the heels of his collab with Sizzla(!), Mr. Skull throws a curve ball atcha with the uber-catchy synth pop grooves of "I Want You." Hires put it best saying it sounds like a ...   expand review  lost Ciara demo what with the smooth female vocals and weird electronic beat, but it also kind of reminds of jams like "My Boo" and "Time After Time" crossed with the Human League. That baby robot voice might sound creepy at first, but trust me it grows on you (or will at least get stuck in your head!). Brooklyn's AC Slater and French young buck Bobmo gives it the hype treatment to make the kids lose their shit on the dancefloor, but I'm with Dre's remix of himself that gives the track a sort of slight jack feel. Awesome cover art by Taadaki Mori seals the deal. -snackmaster
