One of the silver linings of MJ's recent passing is that everybody really got into some of the man's more obscure tracks. Sure, "Billie Jean" was the most played song last week, but for the whole of that weird weekend you ... expand review could turn on the radio and hear any selection of the man's more obscure album cuts and joints from back in the day. With some supremely eerie timing, Slow To Speak has compiled two of those lesser known MJ tracks here on this 12". Side A features "The Lady In My Life(1)," originally released on Thriller, while the flip features The Jacksons' "I Am Love(2)," taken from Dancing Machine. Bob Sinclar makes music for the people. He's not afraid of being slightly cheesy and he pulls out every trick in the book. On this Brazilian-inspired dance track, "Meu Carnaval(1)," Sinclar inserts multiple crowd moving techniques: Batucada percussion, Dubsided-lite zip sounds and ... expand review horns, a guitar breakdown, crowd noise, and Seu Jorge type vocals (actually it's Rolando Faria). Joshua knows how to build house tracks right. "Juice(1)" is stormer from the onset, but Joshua manipulates it so the energy only increases. That sinister bassline is the main weapon, but you'll also get the crowd with the sporadic "What The Fuck ... expand review Is Juice" samples from Dave Chappelle. If you can't get enough of that bassline, go for the DJ Tool version(2) that goes straight into the meat of the track. No filler here either, as b-side "Shiz(3)" is a great techno-ish house track with a bit of jazz. Again, notice the professional build-up, it sneaks up on you. -the mgmnt

Latest in Yellow's Africanism series. In this issue, Bob Sinclair revisits the house classic "Voices" by KC Flight. If you don't know about the original, it's time to brush up on your house history. Arguably the genre-defining tribal house track, "Voices" also ... expand review features one of the most recognizable choruses in house history. But most of all, it's the movement of the track (the journey effect) that really warrants the abused "classic" title. A rather ominous task to remake it, but using original KC Flightt raps and a taught adherence to the original structure, Sinclair has done an admirable job. Much like when Kenny Dope approaches a classic, Sinclair uses restorer-like approach, utilizing modern studio techniques to recreate the instrumentation (giving it more of a polished sound) without overdoing it. For those who never liked the KC Flight rap, you also get the handy dub version on the flip. -the mgmnt
