the lab review
The king of graffiti movies, Style Wars is a straight documentary on the artists and movement that was taking place in New York City, circa 1982. Because it was done at the exact right moment, Style Wars features incredible shots of running trains, interviews with some of the most revered writers and the genuine feeling of what hip hop was really all about- but its much more than nostalgia. It hits the goal that any good documentary hopes to achieve: absolute reality and a truth which is more interesting and amazing than any fiction. They obviously sympathize with the artists, but the directors do an excellent job presenting the whole picture of what was happening. Other than artists and bombers like Seen, Cap, Mare, PJ, Zephyr, Revolt and the amazing Case, they also take time for the Rock Steady Crew and a bit of b-boy history, Mayor Koch, two heads from the MTA, parents, subway riders, early graffiti art gallery patrons and more. Watching it today and the whole film sparkles dead right, the perfect time-capsule for an era of change, energy and creation that will never happen again. A must have.
