Frenchie Lizzy Mercier Descloux was one of the cult figures of NY's early 80s no wave scene. This is EP is an excellent Lizzy primer for the uninitiated. It features two of her biggest tracks, the slamtastic "Fire(1)" with its perfect marriage ... expand review of rock drums and new wave synths (not to mention the perfectly accented vocals); and her truly memorable cover of "Mission Impossible(2)." Flip features part two(3) of "Mission," and "Funky Stuff(4)." Not the easiest songs to come by on vinyl, great to have it on a loud 12". Recommended. -the mgmnt
Sexual Harrassment I Need A Freak LP
freaky electro and synth pop album
- file under:
- new wave + no wave + electro / funk soul disco - albums / rock + new wave + 80/90s / and more
audio picks
Everyone knows these guys for "I Need A Freak," but Sexual Harrassment are more than just one-hit wonders if you dig deeper into the full length (and lucky for you, here it is repressed). These guys took electro and synth pop to ... expand review new levels of sleaze with their freaky as hell synth work and even freakier vocals. You already know the electro classic "I Need A Freak(1)," but the album also features the similarly sleazed out "K-I-S-S-I-N-G(2)" and its instrumental "We Didn't Say It." Then there's tracks like "If I Gave You A Party(3)" which sounds like the blue-print for that lo-fi post-disco style DFA popularized so many years later. Super upbeat party jam with uber lo-fi drums and synths, plus catchy as hell lyrics to boot. "You Are My Sexual Connection(4)" follows a similar kind of punk funk formula with squiggly Prince synths and slap happy bass. Love it! Also includes the pumping disco workout "Exercise Your Ass Off(5)" (pun intended). Super crispy repress with original looking HEAT labels and fancy matte cover. -snackmaster

Another deep italo cut repressed! This time its Hypnotic Samba's self-titled cut back with "Stop - Watch". These early electronic disco sounds were originally released back in the fertile year of 1984, when analog synthesizers and drum machines ruled the scene, and ... expand review still hit hard to this day. Tons of trippy arpeggios and cosmic lead synths float above a chugging disco beat take you higher and higher. And If you can't get with the semi-cheesey vocals on "Hypnotic Samba," "Stop - Watch" is a pumping instrumental affair. Slick repress with clean looking ZYX labels.

Hot Toddy's standout track from the recent Cosmic Balearic Beats Vol. 2 gets the proper 12" treatment on Eskimo. Hot Toddy is actually Chris Todd of Crazy P and his slow burning disco heater "I Need Love(1)" melts speakers and minds ... expand review with its grinding pace and deep, mesmerizing bass, and piano/guitar laced climax. As a special treat, this 12" also features a Morgan Geist re-dub(2) that takes the mood deeper by getting rid of the vocals and adding some sick, dubbed-out synth action. Fans of cosmic slow disco, Aeroplane, Mark E, etc. must check. Recommended. -snackmaster

Pick! The first 12" from Electric Minds' forth coming Tribute To Arthur Russell was a sleeper hit here at the Lab selling out quietly every time it was restocked, and you can bet this one will do the same (maybe not so ... expand review quietly). This sampler comes STACKED with top notch remixes and cover versions from the scene's brightest producers. First up is the always on-point Faze Action taking on "In The Light Of The Miracle" with Yam Who and Mary Moore on vocals. This remix(1) is so good it even got our FedEx guy asking who it was when it was playing on th speakers! Deep funky bass topped off with Arthur-esque keys true to the original, an irresistible horn lick and cool vocals create a vibe you just don't want to end. Up next, the homie Pocketknife (of Tamourine Dream/Flagrant Fowl fame) rocks an excellent version of "Get Around To It(2)" with dope live cello by Heather McIntosh and vocals by Joe Worricker that are jaw-droppingly similar Arthur's! This version even gets a rework(3) by editor supreme and recent Lab fave Mark E that turns down the bpms and gets really deep and dark. The Andy Spence (of New Young Pony Club) version(4) of "Arm Around You" rounds of another choice 12" from Electric Minds. Can't wait for the full length! Recommended. -snackmaster

Led Zeppelin gone italo? Yes, it's for real. Massimo Barsotti D.J.' cover version of "Whole Lotta Love(1)" was originally released on Fuzz Dance back in 1983 (home to Alexander Robotnicks's Problemes D'Amour) and has been a sought-after electronic disco jam for heads ... expand review ever since. This crispy new repress features the same format as the original 12" with the cosmically dubbed-out "Another Version(2)" on the flip. Both feature the recognizable melody of the original, but mostly done with mean synths and tough electronic drums. Loud import

UK's 2020 Soundsystem is a live electronic act consisting of two Brits and two Argentinians rocking drums, keys, and a DJ on loops and beats. This 12" features a couple tracks they have been killing with at their live shows including a ... expand review wicked cover of the Giorgio Moroder classic "The Chase(1)" that sounds so identitical to the original I thought it was some kind of re-edit at first. All the arpeggios are their and they hit the synth sounds spot on. The flip features a cover of Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle's "You Love(2)." This time the live drums give it away, but again the synth is right on. The vocalist doesn't hold a torch to Principle, but you can think of it as more of a new disco style homage. Limited pressing. -snackmaster

That's right, two more lost Ron Hardy edits pressed up on mysterious translucent vinyl. No info at all on these things (plain black labels on both sides), but really all you have to know is that these are the work of the ... expand review edit master Ron Hardy and that they're super duper limited. One side features a never before heard mix of Jamie Principle's freaky Trax classic "Baby Wants To Ride(1)," while the other features an edit of Mach's "On and On(2)," a staple in the early house scene with that infectious "Toot, Toot! Beep, Beep!" sample from Donna Summer. Get it! -snackmaster

Second in Jeff Mills' drummer tribute series. Mills pays homage to 6 classic drummers here: Mukul Dongre(1) (top indian drummer), Pete Escovedo(2) (father to Sheila E!), Talvin Singh(3), Yamato(4) (traditional Japanese drummers), Tony Allen(5), and Blas Coyazo(6). Don't expect traditional drumming sounds ... expand review here, Mills interprets each style using old school drum machines and little else. The whole thing plays like a Chicago house mixing tool. -the mgmnt
