It's pretty common knowledge that Fela Kuti created afro-beat. His influence on not only that genre, but untold others is undeniable. This collection of Fela covers (approved by his estate) and Fela-inspired songs has been lovingly compiled by Egon and ...   expand review  released by Now Again, who really know how to do it up when it comes to compilations. Some background on the Equatics... They hail from Hampton Virginia, they were high school champions of Pepsi's "New Sounds of 1972" challenge, they are one of the illest high school soul bands you never heard of! And thanks to the guys at ...   expand review  Now-Again these incredible sounds can be enjoyed by the ears many rather than the elite few. Doin' It!!!! is the lost soul/funk masterpiece from this obscure high school band. Now there was a time not too long ago when all sorts of rare high school funk albums were being reissued. This album sets itself apart from the rest by the sheer soulfulness in the music, going much deeper than their peers. You gotta hear it to believe it and you'll be scratching your head sayin' "this is a highschool band?!" Have a taste with "Walk On By(1)," "Merry Go Round(2)," "Ain't No Sunshine(3)," "What They Doin?(4)" and "Where Is Love(5)." 9 tracks total, recommended. -snackmaster

Golf Channel is killing it right now. You already know about their top notch 12" releases, but this mix cd is up there as one of the better disco/dance mixes I've heard in awhile (and I hear a lot of them). NY ...   expand review  DJ/musician Justin Vandervolgen is behind the decks here (and the edits) and totally makes you feel like you're at the best underground party the NY scene has to offer. The mix kicks things off with some mind melting disco funk, then seamlessly flows into deep disco soul grooves, killer house grooves, raw italo, proto-house, and back again to the disco for just under an hour of mix heat. There's a tracklist, but no original artists are mentioned since as the title suggests, these are not your average, easy to find grooves (try to find 'em!). Only the choicest cuts make the mix here, and you'll love every second of it. Big Recommendation. -snackmaster

Oof! This is heavy, heavy stuff. The Whitefield Brothers coming with it on some world-psych-funk ish on Earthology, the follow-up to 2002's In The Raw. Given the long span between the releases, let me just say, the wait is totally worth it. ...   expand review  The extensive amount of global funk research the brothers put into this work is evident on every track - from the use of exotic instruments, to the use of Arabic rhythmical structures, African pentatonic scales and Oriental modes. Topping it all off, they collaborate with a wide range of contemporaries including Edan, Mr. Lif, Bajka, Percee P and MED to musicians from Antibalas, El Michels Affair, Quantic and the Dap-Kings. This music is like a funky, psychedelic trip around the world, don't miss it. Recommended. -snackmaster

Excellent debut release from Los Angeles-based balearic band Pacific Horizons. Deep cosmic grooves are on the menu for this 12" complete with epic guitar solos, dubbed-out synths, subtle psychedelics and a steady swaying balearic tempo (not too fast, not too slow). Both ...   expand review  sides, "The Amulet(1)" and "Universal Horizons(2)," are equally impressive. Fans of Cosmic Baleaeric Beats, Milky Disco, Lo Recordings, DJ Harvey, Todd Terje, and chilling on the beach need to check this. With just four releases (this is #4), Golf Channel Recordings has established itself as one of those cult NY labels that all the record nerds and disco snobs obsess over, and with good reason. Their releases dig deeper than most and seem ...   expand review  to always elevate the bar for cosmic/balearic/disco edits. Two more unusual suspects go under for re-edit surgery this time around, the first being Elias Rahbani's stupid rare '78 disco burner "Liza...Liza" extended and fixed here as "Liza (Sexican Version In C.5#)(1)." On the flip it's Dr. Hook's psychedelic rock sleaze fest "Penicillin Penny" that gets reworked as simply "Penny(2)." As with all the GC releases, don't expect this to sit on the shelf for very long. -snackmaster

Nearly every track from Quantic's Tradition In Transition could warrant a single. "Un Canto A Mi Tierra(1)" is especially deserving because of the unusual, infectious vocals of Nidia Gongora.
