Classic and much overlooked deep house album from 1989 by Merwyn Sanders and Eric Lewis aka Virgo (not to be confused with Marshall Jefferson and Adonis' Virgo) gets its first official repress from Rush Hour. This album is considered as one of ... expand review the best of its kind by house heads and it's easy to hear why. Think the best elements of Trax legends like Larry Heard, Marshall Jefferson, and Armando rolled into one free flowing album. Deep pianos and strings, jackin beats and bass - this is beautiful house music. Really isn't a dull moment on the whole thing. Remastered for extra bump with new artwork too. Recommended. -snackmaster

The After Dark CDR was originally only available on Glass Candy's '07 west coast tour (only 100 pressed!). Due to popular demand (and the fact that this shit is REALLY REALLY good), the guys over at Italian's Do It Better repressed the ... expand review joint and now you too can have a piece of this modern disco hotness. This isn't a mixtape either (though it kinda looks like one) - it actually contains full unreleased tracks and demo versions from soon-to-be-huge new disco/new italo artists Glass Candy, Mirage, Chromatics, Farah, and Professor Genius. Just check some of these sounds: The sweet and soulful disco grooves of Glass Candy with "Rolling Down The Hills(1)," their take on the Kraftwerk classic "Computer Love(2)," and Belle Epoque's "Miss Broadway(3)," the bittersweet italo vibes of the Chromatics with "Hands In The Dark(4)" and "In The City(5)," and Mirage's spaced-out italo vocoder action on "Lady Operator(6)" and "Lake Of Dreams(7)," and the avant slow motion disco sickness that is Farah's "Dancing Girls(8)." 14 tracks total, no throw aways. Do not miss this if you are a fan of the disco-italo sound (you'll regret it - trust me). Recommended. -snackmaster

Quirky, minimal tracks from STL aka Stephan Laubner. Analog, lo-fi house is the name of the game here - take a listen to "Vintage Hunter(1)" to hear what I'm talking about. Also check out the trial-like rhythms and R2D2 synths ... expand review on "Wasabi Flavoured(2)," or the the downtempo sketch "Too Slow(3)." "In My Dreams(4)" is a stuttering house track that kind of stumbles along, but the dub remix by Intruder(5) smooths things back out (slowing it down at the same time). The record also includes three locked groove drum loops on the b-side as a little bonus. Five tracks total. -Hires

Awesome little EP that comes to us via Kompakt and Matias Aguayo and Gary Pimiento's Comeme label. The label was designed to showcase South American artists, and the music that's played at their Bumbumbox parties. The sound at these parties ... expand review is pretty lo-tech, usually consisting of ghetto blasters that are strung together in the street. The sounds on the record reflect that; the songs here aren't built to be subtle. Check out the weird vocals on the cumbia/house hybrid from Aguayo himself, "Veneno," then listen to the even-weirder vocals on "Caminando(2)," contributed by Rebollado and Raquel Wolff. Also check out the awesome italo vibes on "Ritmo Especial(3)" by Mexico's Daniel Maloso, and the laidback house grooves on "Jagos(4)" by Christian S. It's an awesome little window into the scene south of the equator, definitely different from what's going on in el norte. Recommended. -Hires

Round 2 for Rush Hour's classic Detroit house represses. This time it's Rick Wilhite's Soul Edge EP, which was his debut release on Moodymann's KDJ label back in 1996. Big Detroit house vibe throughout with killer mixes from fellow Detroit masters Theo ... expand review Parrish(1) on "Get On Up!!" and Moodymann(2) on "What Do You See?". Also includes Rick's Groove mix of "What Do You See(3)" as well as a bonus unreleased mix(4) that was never on the original 12". This is a no-brainer for house music fans. Don't miss it! Excellent example of late 70's disco from Nigeria and with the popularity of disco and those Nigerian Soundway compilations these days, this reissue couldn't have come out at a better time. Orlando Julius is a legend in Nigeria and a pioneer of ... expand review the afro soul scene (who worked with other legends like Hugh Masekela and even co-produced and wrote Lamont Dozier's "Going Back To My Roots"). On "Disco Hi-Life(1)" he combines the vibes of Hi-Life with funky disco sensibilities for an irresistible jam for the dancefloor. Check those sweet horns, keys, and bass that'll get people feeling good. This repress comes with the original '79 version as well as Percussion Edit(2) and bonus beat, which is just the stripped down drums. Recommended. -snackmaster

Leave it to UK's Honest Jon's label to reissue a definitive collection of productions from legendary London sound system Unity Sound. In the 80's, Unity was one of the greatest dancehall sound systems, revolutionizing the dancehall with fresh digital dubs from Jamaica ... expand review including King Jammy's anthem Under Mi Sleng Teng. Inspired by Sleng Teng, Unity produced their own casio-tone, 8-bit versions that can be found here on this brilliant compilation. It's easy to see where current digi-dub labels (Jahtari, Hyperdub, etc) are getting their inspiration from with all this tough vintage stuff! Thankfully they've included both vocal mixes and versions for all the riddims included. 21 tracks total. Recommended. -snackmaster
