  the patented lab review
Monk (and partner E's E) has been on some secret laboratory shit with this release. Even though we see this guy every week, we didn't hear about this release until a couple days ago. I'm surprised dude could hold it in, cause this shit is, for the lack of the better word, QUALITY. He told me this release would especially appeal to me, sensing my fondness for mid-nineties downtempo records. We'll this is the new 07 version of that style, built on impeccable loops and finessed to death in the studio. Of course you gotta start with a tasty little "Intro," the audio equivalent to a amuse bouche. "Pepita Stew" kicks it up a step and crushes any midtempo funk coming out of DC (challenge!). Next up, more interlude goodness with "C's Thing followed by another midtempo track "Over Easy's." With the a-side, it seems they got the 12" requisites out of the way, allowing them to really get free on b-side. "Greenswood Groove" is a mad disco-latin-beat concoction. Sounds like something Citizen Kane would drop a couple hundo on at our neighbors A1, and then play on our system. The interlude "Secret Stash" is the most tripped out thing on here, mixing old jazz loops with outer space noises. And lastly, I think they've saved the best for last with the dubbed out, vapor beats of "Aristocratic Bad Boy." C'mon, you're talking about Monk here. Recommended.
