the patented lab review lab informed suggestions
Originally, I got turned on to this LA-based label from an on-some-next-shit EP they had out last year (Absensce of Color Vol.1/2). What I dug was the fact that their intricate sample-based production avoided being too intellectual or sacrificing groove for concept. This four song EP is much along the same lines, with contributions from Exile, GB, MainFrame and Platonic. The previous EP's uptempo cut "Future's Oldest Story" has been revisited by top London beat breaker Daz-I-Kue of Bugz in the Attic, the new version benefiting from a nasty snare pattern that is thoughtfully added as a "Bonus Beat" after the 122 BPM instrumental runs through. Never fear, mutant downtempo is still in effect, in the form of the lovely "Lullaby," in which Exile throws slivers of a sweet vocal over some drums that snuck out of Jay Dee's dog pen. GB's dastardly Miles chop-up "Someday" is annoying but I like it, while his Bugz-y "80's Ladeez" is good and too short.
