Midnight Juggernauts
This New Technology (Emperor Machine Remix) Digi-EP
cosmic dance rock
Melbourne's Midnight Juggernauts have been pumping out catchy-as-hell cosmic dance rock since 2004, "This New Technology" is yet another entry into their canon of songs that make you shake your ass and pump your fist at the same time. The B-side features the tropical, laid-back "Fantastic Valleys" and a pumped up italo-sounding remix from the UK's Emperor Machine. Recommended.

Pylon
Chomp More
reissued version of classic new wave LP
DFA made legions of New Wave fans happy back in 2007 when they reissued Pylon's seminal Gyrate, and now they've done it again, this time with the group's sophomore album, Chomp. The reissued edition features four new bonus tracks, including alternate versions of "Yo-Yo," "Gyrate," "Crazy" and the previously unreleased track "Four Minutes." That makes it 16 tracks all together, tons of listening material for all the new wave heads out there.

Lazer Sword
Gucci Sweatshirt Digi-EP
beat heavy electronica, hype dance remixes
Apparently the original version of "Gucci Sweatshirt" was recorded back in 2007 and was causin' a buzz on the blogs for a minute and is now FINALLY getting a proper vinyl release on Innovative Leisure. Lazer Sword is two dudes from SF that bang out some really tough electro-bass-dub-acid-electronica beats to smash your head too (and dance to if you're so inclined). Michu in customer service thinks the track is inspired from $5 bootleg Gucci sweatshirts which have infiltrated every liquor store in the Bay. I don't think it's a bad assumption (shoot I'd buy one for $5!). Anyway, the track slaps super hard in it's original form, but the '09 Electro Remix is something you can really get a good dancefloor going with. The Neon Black Acid Remix is even more pumping and would totally work in an electro house set or even with more techy acid stuff. The 12" rounds out with more heavily freaked beat business on "Jet Black(4)." Super duty tough!

Mom & Dad
The Whole Sh-Bang Digi-EP
electro house with minimal and house remixes
Hot new electro from Mom & Dad and DJs Are Not Rockstars (Alexander Technique's label). "The Whole Sh-Bang" is a pounding electro track that revolves around a titular vocal sample. Harvard Bass gets drafted for remix duty, and turns in a seriously thumping minimal take, my favorite on the EP. Finally, Tom Stephan puts a big, housey vibe down, featuring a bassline that's sure to be a crowd pleaser.

indie dance and electro house, all-star remixes
France's most fashionable electro house label is back with its second batch of high profile remixes from the past year or so. In case you were sleeping when these tracks were first released, Kitsune's got your back with a gang of floor filling bangers from the likes of La Roux, A-Trak, Phoenix, In Flagranti, Beni, etc as remixed by Holy Ghost, Lifelike, Tepr, Chateau Marmont, CSS, Classixx and much more. Talk about an all-star line-up! A great way to re-up that french electro crate in one shot. 15 tracks total.

The Toxic Avenger
Toxic Is Dead (Drop The Lime Remix) Digi-EP
frantic electro-house, heavy remixes
Lead single off Toxic Avenger's upcoming full length. "Toxic Is Dead" is a full dose of banging electro-house to give the dancefloor convulsions. The original mix is already wild and crazy as-is, with all manner of screeching distorted synth action, but then you also get bass monsters like T&B's Drop The Lime and South Central on the remix to really take it to the limit. Also includes a remix from IHEARTCOMIX label head Franki Chan and the Cyberpunkers, but the DTL remix wins.

Shit Robot
Simple Things (Work It Out) Digi-EP
throwback chicago style house, big pianos
It's been a minute since we've heard from Marcus Lambkin (aka Shit Robot), but dude is back and coming real raw on DFA. "Simple Things" takes influence from old school Chicago house with it's matter- of-fact spoken word/singing vocals (reminiscent of Master C & J's classic "In The City"), jackin' drums, bass, and that HUGE piano chord break down halfway in. Listen to the lyrics - this is working man's house right here! This digital version also collects all the remixes from BOTH domestic and import "Simple Things" 12" so you get the Todd Terje which does a beautiful job fattening up the bass, cropping out the lyrics, and giving the track a warm overhaul that makes it sound much less "warehouse-y" and more feel good as well as the Serge Santiago mix that goes for a dark and mysterious feel till those big room pianos come in to take it over the top.

Black Meteoric Star
Dreamcatcher / Dawn Digi-12
cosmic house, hypnotic synth grooves
Third and final Digi-12 to come off Gavin Russom's BMS project. For the uninitiated, Black Meteoric Star is Gavin Russom composing and freaking a minimal analog synth set up (no more than 6 equipment pieces) all the way live in single takes. Two of my favorite cuts off the full length are featured here. The cooled out synth groove of "Dawn" is a nice contrast to the epic, fast paced jams that comprise most of the BMS sound, while "Dreamcatcher" goes deep into hypnotic layers of synths for super cosmic vibes.

Altair Nouveau
Space Fortress Digi-12
spacey new disco with funk and 80s soundtrack influences
Debut 12" from SF's Altair Nouveau (aka Brandon Mitchell) on DFA. Like many releases these days, "Space Fortress" has a big nostalgic feel for the sounds of 80's analog synthesizers and drum machines. Not that this is a bad thing, especially since Brandon melds this sound with his love of old soundtracks creating a listening experience that can work on the dancefloor as well as in your headphones on the solo. The soundtrack influence surely comes through on "Showdown" with its tingly synths that sounds like the theme to a space flick, but its "Sorcerer" that really got me open with its funked out boogie bass and jazzy synth soloing over tough drums.

Juiceboxxx and Dre Skull
Hype (Sinden, Udachi) Digi-EP
energetic hip-house and electro
The final installment in Juiceboxxx & Dre Skull's trilogy of singles (the first two were Sweat and Center Stage). Just like their previous work, this oen features some wild, fast paced raps from Mr. Boxxx backed by great production from the always reliable Dre Skull. "Hype" is an uptempo breakbeat track that lurks beneath lyrics about getting... well, hype. Huge remixes here too, with Sinden turning it into a straight up hip-house track and Udachi putting his signature belching bass sounds into the mix. Dre Skull also gets an extra crack at it, making it into a "hands in the air" techno moment.

Drlkt Freddie
Blood - EP
bouncy electro-house
NYC duo Drlkt Freddie are back with another EP of bouncy electro-house. "Blood" is built out of call and response chants and what sound like samples from Super Mario Bros, really has a hyperactive energy to it. Chewy Chocolate Cookies come in on the remix with some epic sounding strings before punching you in the face with some huge bass sounds, while Foulworks bridges the gap between the two styles, chopping the Mario samples up over his own brand of electro mayhem.

london club music, 4 heaters!
Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 (of Mad Decent fame) have come together to drop a record that will give you a combined sense of dynamic London music scene. The duo uses elements of dupstep, house and everything in between, forming aggressive, bastard butt movers. These tracks have been getting heavy support by DJs like Drop The Lime, Starkey, Feadz, Shir Khan, and others. 4 heaters!

Crookers
What Up Y'all (Seiji, DJ Gant-Man, Kid Cudi) Digi-EP
electro with huge remixes
After blowing-the-fuck-up with their remix of Kid Cudi's "Day 'N Nite," Crookers and Fool's Gold are back at it with a full length EP from the Italian duo. "What's Up Y'all," yet another electro jackhammer that features up and comer Izza Kizza on the hook. There's been lots of hype floating around for this one, I wouldn't be surprised if it blows up with all the kids in neon. "Knobbers" features their signature electro/bmore sound combo, and also gets a remix from Fool's Gold alum DJ Gant-Man. UK brokenbeat star Seiji contributes two remixes here, in both booty-bass and acid flavors, their collabo with Kid Cudi, "Embrace The Martian." The original version of that track, which is also included, was originally featured on Kid Cudi's A Kid Named Cudi mixtape. Six tracks total, recommended.

indie electro, hype Japanese remixes
Those hip NY kids in that funky ice cream truck are back to make you dance till dawn, literally! "Dance Till Dawn" happens to be the title of their latest track and coincidently the track gets remixed by the creme de la creme of the Japanese scene hence the title of the EP Hearts Japan.
The original version bangs hard on the dancefloor, but check the funked out AMWE remix, the heavy 80kidz remix or the super ravey Dex Pistols version. Also includes their previous dancefloor friendly singles "CYOA" and "Switchblade," as well as the melodic ballads "Digital Suicide" and "????".

Lauren Flax
You've Changed (feat. Sia) Remixes Digi-LP
vocal house remixed
New remix EP for Lauren Flax's debut single "You've Changed." War Games leads things off with a broken beat cut, featuring some squelchy bass lines and a wailing trumpet, and Kill The Rocket follows that up by rearranging the vocals into a trippy language that definitely isn't English. Christopher Just and Tombstone stick closer to the feel of the original, slowing things down and adding some nice synth arpeggios, and then Dean Coleman finishes things off with a huge house reworking.

Floating Points
Vacuum Boogie Digi-EP
house disco techno hybrid tracks
After delivering one of the year's freshest beat releases (Love Me Like This 12"), Floating Points continues his tangent into housier territories. "Vacuum Boogie" is a wonderful piece of cosmic boogie slash house, wait for that bassline to come in for the payoff. The techno accents give this track a real Detroit vibe. B-side gets deeper into the techno sounds with "Truly" and "Argonaute II," sounding like a younger brother to Ghostly artist Osborne. Check out the electronic organ play on "Truly," that's inspirational. Well crafted stuff.

LCD Soundsystem
45:33 The Remixes (Prins Thomas, Theo Parrish, Pilooski) Digi-EP
all-star remixes for LCD's epic album-length track
Back in 2005, LCD Soundsystem created an astounding piece entitled 45:33 (as in 45 minutes and 33 seconds long) originally commissioned by Nike and intended to be a jogging soundtrack. It was quite a track, one that mutated and morphed into several movements and one that frontman James Murphy is known to be very proud of. Fast forward to 2009 and 45:33 gets revisited by the dance scene's brightest stars for some stunning remixes. LCD Soundsystem has rounded up a seriously impressive international line-up of producers for the occassion including Detroit legend Theo Parrish, NYC go-to guys Runaway and Prince Language, Norwegian new disco maestro Prins Thomas, UK's Trus'me and Padded Cell, and France's Pilooski. Various flavors of dance and disco music are represented here and you can bet they are all quality. 8 tracks total. Recommended.

Stevie Kotey
The Buttocks Digi-12
new deep disco and 80's boogie sounds
Kotey is killing it on this. He's definitely letting his love for the boogie shine on "So Cheeky." The track builds up for days with just the synths and drums, in traditional 80's 12" fashion, to let the funky bassline drop in like a monster. "I Get Deeper" keeps it just as funky but deeper with a low vocal intro and spontaneous layering. I heard this was supposedly a one-taker and I believe it too with the freeform-ness of the composition. If you like Mudd, Blackjoy, or Emperor Machine, should definitely peep.

Malente
I Like It (Riva Starr, Mikix The Cat) Digi-EP
house and electro versions of an infamous KC & The Sunshine Band track
New electro heat from our homies over at Fools Gold! "I Like It" is built on a sample of KC & The Sunshine Band's infamous wedding tune (well, I guess most of their stuff is default wedding fodder at this point). Malente's version drops the intro sample just long enough for the crowd to recognize it before launching into a blistering electro interpolation. Riva Starr brings things closer to disco house territory, chopping the original sample into staccato stabs, while Mikix The Cat summons some massive basslines for a fidgety electro version. Fantastic production all around, recommended.

Q&A
Tumbling Cubes Digi-12
dark, dubby disco sounds
Q&A are one of the newest DFA acts (disco fans may know them by their former name, Expanding Head Band), and they make a good showing here on their debut 12". "Tumbling Cubes" is a dark, minimal disco cut with a squelchy synth bass line and some seriously dubby sounds. The b-side features "Trap Door," which ups the energy level a bit with some delayed guitars, live bass, and most importantly, some cowbell. Fans of Free Blood or In Flagranti should definitely dig this stuff.

WZRDZ
WZRDZ Are Awshum Digi-EP
dubstep and electro
Diverse new EP from the Brooklyn/Bay Area duo WZRDS. "Conjuror" is a thunderous dubstep track that goes from 0 to 60 in about two seconds, and "Mompa" keeps the energy level up with its electro/dubstep hybrid sounds. Things slow down a little on "Sharona," with an 808 break beat and some distorted synths, but then "Jungleishous" cranks things right back up with its fast pace, glitchy vocal samples and distorted appegiations. This stuff will definitely drive the raver kids wild if you drop it around 3am.

The Milwaukee-bred, Chicago house lovin' MC-slash-producer goes all the way on "100MPH," a fist pumpin' piano house anthem with super positive, feel good raps. Big lovin' piano chords and emotive guitars set the groove while the vocals keep it movin'. Rumor has it he even ventured out to Chicago to have his vocals recorded by house legends Joe Smooth and Craig Loftis! AC Slater pumps it up even more on his remix with crazy wobble bass offsetting the piano chords for HYPE results. Also includes a driving electro remix by Ocelot and an interesting Free Blood remix.

Delphic
This Momentary Digi-EP
uptempo synth pop with indie dance remixes
Nice dancey single from three-piece synth-pop outfit Delphic and Kitsune. "This Momentary" starts off as a bare bones pop track, and slowly builds into a dance number, with the heavy kick arriving late to the party (about a minute and a half in). The Parallels remix sticks to that structure, but reworks the instrumentation and adds more layers to the chorus. Golden Bug slows things down a bit, and makes it into a more traditional 4x4 indie dance burner, while Le Matos brings back classic Kitsune distorted bass sound and adds some big hand claps on top of glitchy drums and synths. Solid work all around.

James Curd
The Wills & The Wonts (Treasure Fingers Remix) Digi-EP
funky disco pop, Treasure Fingers remix
I first heard of James Curd from his recent DFA release. Apparently the Chicagoan has been making noise for some time before that with soundtrack contributions to shows like CSI and Grey's Anatomy and video games like GTA4. Who knew? Well here he is on another funky expedition with The Wills & The Wont's. Similar to his DFA single, this EP's got a disco pop appeal that the masses can easily get down to. The title track features a stronky bass line and cool disco rap lyrics to get that ass shakin'. "Back Off Move Away" is a bit more electro, but still very catchy, while "Don't Wanna Be Free" features some ridiculously funky scatting action. Fool's Gold representer Treasure Fingers outshines the originals though with his hype remix of "Back Off Move Away" which will start the dance party anywhere it is dropped. It's like Robert Palmer...(simply irresistible).

Sweat.X
I'm That Alley (Mike Slott Remix) Digi-EP
electro synth-pop from South Africa
Sweat.X is South Africa's Spoek Mathambo on vocals and Markus Wormstorm on production. This is their second EP (the first being 2007's EbonyIvoryTrain, and they continue to push the boundaries of electro with tracks like "I'm That Alley" that feature Spoek rockin' a Prince-style falsetto over a thick beat, dripping with syrupy synths. On "The Knife," they go for more of a dirty ghetto-tech style complete with pitched-down vocals and dirty female raps. Mike Slott turns in a nice abstract beat remix of "I'm That Alley." You might recognize him from his recent remix for Flying Lotus and the Blu Jemz Beat Machine. Includes instrumentals for the original versions.

Mudd
Doug's Video Shop Digi-EP
smooth and deep disco house grooves
Killer material from Mudd of Smith & Mudd fame. Though he might be best known for his dreamy, balearic soundscapes, Mudd turns out the deep disco house style on "Doug's Video Shop." Go ahead and click the sound sample. It starts off with beautiful balearic business, but when that BIG bassline kicks in, you can't help but groove! Dubbed out guitars, cool keys, and a wicked synth solo seal the deal. "Ossian's Cave" takes it to even deeper realms with airy pads and a chugging little bassline under flanged out highs. Also check out the unreleased mix that gives it a more acoustic feel. Recommended.

Yacht
Psychic City Digi-EP
indie dance with disco-centric remixes
Jona Bechtolt and Claire Evans are YACHT and they're here to make you dance you cares away in that sort of ironic, indie kinda way. This EP features a few stand-out tracks from the See Mystery Lights full length, and a fistful of extra dancey remixes to make you shake your thing. The original version of "Psychic City" was a hip summer anthem as-is (water drop snare in full effect!), but the Classixx boys give it a slo-mo disco make-over complete with semi-sleazy low slung bass and glitzy disco accoutrements. Check Joe Goddard's mix which strips it down to the bare bones and rebuilds it up in a dreamy cosmic kinda way. For the funkier side of things, it's Rory Phillips that takes it there. Entrancing arpeggios set the pace for funked out bass and breakbeats. Also includes the big, ballsy electro disco of Hedford Vachal's remix of "Waste Of Time" with its big swanky guitars and squiggl synths and "B Side Suicide" with the craziest lyrics to a dance track this reviewer has ever heard ("Blow your brains out do the Kurt Cobain").

Eli Escobar
Glass House (XXXChange Remix) Digi-12
debut solo 12" release, XXXChange on the remix
NYC's Eli Escobar has been making noise for years now, from his hip-hop productions on Fondle 'Em to his edits on Money Lotion and remixes for everybody from MIA to Britney Spears. You'd think he'd have a solo 12" by now, but believe it or not this release on Stretch Armstrong's Plant label is it! Eli goes in strong on "Glass House" letting a tough house rhythm slowly build with layers of synth lines that reach a climax with epic strings and pads after the breakdown. The homie XXXChange goes for the "Yoga Mom In A Blender Mix" on the flip that strips down Eli's lush production for a rawer warehouse feel. Check that screeching synth line after the break that'll turn the floor loose. Also includes the "Good Times" (not on the vinyl). Pump it up!
