Altern 8
Brutal-8-E Digi-EP
breakbeat rave anthem circa 1992
"Brutal-8-E" was a huge rave anthem back in the early nineties. Although the original version is very recognizable, I love the Jungle Brutalism Mix with its tougher breakbeat and that ragga emcee... timeless! The Trance Mix is hilarious, you can almost see the path of glowstick while listening to this one. The Mega Mix is also pretty cool here.

Altern 8
E-Vapor 8 Digi-EP
vintage breakbeat rave sounds circa 92
Air horns, divapellas, rave synths, breakbeats... it's gotta be Altern-8! This is the first Altern-8 single I ever bought back in the day (1992) when rave and Taco Bell were the only things aimed at maladjusted teens like me. "E-Vapor-8" sounds much like DJ Iceey with its breakbeat and female vocals. The Disitnigr 8 mix gets heavier into the rave territory with an awesome stuttered breakbeat. "Infiltrate 808" is Daft Punk before there was such a thing. So cool.

Every Body (2 Bad Mice Remix) Digi-EP
early drum + bass slash rave circa 1993
Altern 8 made huge steps in their sound in the early nineties. In 1993, they went from creating that candy breakbeat rave stuff to the dark Moving Shadow-type tracks we have here (although you could also consider it jumping on someone else's train, and what happened to the cool covers?). "Everybody (Altern 8's Easy Chill Mix)" is a prime example that foreshadowed the drum and bass takeover. Check out the 2 Bad Mice Remix as well; the combination of these 2 artists back in the day was the equivalent of Timbo collaborating with the Neptunes (haha, not quite, but at least in record nerd terms).

Full On Mask Hysteria Digi-LP
1992 classic breakbeat rave album
Breakbeat rave at its finest. This 1992 cemented Altern 8's position as the more underground alternative to Prodigy. So many anthems here and a couple sleepers that I'm rediscovering. Sure, all the songs start off the same, but you got to imagine yourself there to really enjoy it. I wonder if this stuff will ever come back.

Altern 8
Hypnotic St-8 (Joey Beltram Remix) Digi-EP
cool Joey Beltram remix, mediocre rave stuff
"Hypnotic St-8" was far from Altern 8's finest hour (way too cluttered), but the saving grace here is the Joey Beltram Remix of "Infiltrate 808" which mixes classic house elements with Altern 8's rave-y synths. You could conceiveably play this mix without it sounding like 1992. Other than that, this is dollar bin material.

The Vertigo Digi-EP
breakbeat rave anthems circa 1991
Watch ya bassbins! This digital version collects both versions of the Vertigo single from 1991, which means you get the awesome b-side "Re-Indulge". It's a gorgeous Amen-break track that will induce instant e-face. Speaking of b-sides, "Real Time Status" is pretty fucking awesome as well. As for the title track "Infiltrate 202" is one of several rave anthems these guys pumped out. There's 3 mixes of the song on here, I like the Vertigo version (check the ambient sections) and vocoder Astrix version.

Don't Take It Digi-12
lost chicago house circa 88
Lost track circa 1988 from fallen Chicago legend Armando. Presented by the Let's Pet Puppies label, "Don't Take It" has been resurrected by Thomos and Johnny Fiasco. Thomos' edit is a slowly building minimal acid track showcasing the spoken vocals of an unnamed female vocalist. Fiasco fills out his sound with crisp vintage kits and a nice build-up.

Azzido Da Bass
Dooms Night: 2008 Remixes (Switch, Crookers, Laidback Luke, Radioslave) Digi-EP
new remixes of this electro-house classic
Azzido Da Bass' 1999 electro-house classic "Dooms Night" (quite groundbreaking in retrospect) gets reissued again, but this time, with remixes seemingly targeted to Lab heads. Switch leads it off with a very literal, clean and lean translation of the original. Judging by this mix, I figure Switch thought the og didn't need to much additional work, and I'd have to agree. Producer on the rise (watch this name), Laidback Luke, offers his bigroom sound on second mix, while the prolific Radio Slave tags in with the extended 11 minute mix. This digital version also includes a mix by the Crookers and an updated version by Azzido himself.

Azzido Da Bass
Dooms Night Digi-EP
1999 electro house classic, hard hitting
Electro house classic from 1999. "Dooms Night" is like the audio manifestation of Battlestar Galactica's Cylons (I know, nerdy reference). Tracks like these paved the way for the current hard hitting electro scene (and even dubstep to some extent with its sub-bass). The formula is really simple: find an easily identifiable sound, pound that one sound, and bring the drums in and out with build-ups. Man, I forgot how freaking hard the original Club Mix is. The Jam X remix is rave warehouse all the way, while the Stanton Warriors remix is breakbeaty and features a ragga emcee.

Brio
Ingratitudes Digi-12
latin-nuyorican dance
Pal Joey, under the Brio guise, dropped this latin track back in 2004. The original version sounds like it was recorded in a budget South American studio with a couple vocalists and a drum machine... pretty authentic. For the remix, he takes it to NYC, and turns it into a slick deep houser. Love the juxtaposition.

Classic deep house from the prolific Pal Joey
Pal Joey boxing out the competition once again on these smooth deep house productions under his Contrasts moniker(dudes got a thousand of them). Originally released in 2003, these are still going strong with that classic sound only Pal Joey can touch. Check the breezy summer vibes on his single "I Sing" with Melanie White on vocals. Instrumental mix also included for those that like to do the live extended remix. Also peep the uplifting soul groove on "Glee." Can you say rooftop jam?

Super-fun, bouncy house from Pal Joey circa 1990. "I Can Feel It" definitely has those feel-good vibes that you can mix into your 90s house set in between Black Box and Robin S. Not sure if we're ready for the ragga-house revivial a la "Jump And Prance" though.

Earth People
Dance Digi-12
classic nyc house
"Dance" was the first house record I owned, given to me by an older Chicago DJ , and I can't think of a better introduction to house music. Especially since I was strictly playing hip-hop back then and the B-Side was Soho's "Hot Music," which was and still is THE b-boy house record. Both are New York house classics, although "Dance" is the more overlooked, less obvious of the two. "Dance" is built on samples rather than drum machines and synths, with very little filters or effects- it's got that gritty, raw feel that dancers flip for. And the 4-bar drums-only intro on the club mix is made for doubling and cutting - check Derrick May's Mayday Mix CD for more on that. This was originally on the Kool Groove Label in 1989; Earth People and Soho are both Pal Joey aliases. The "Bonus Beats" is a much more stripped down approach - same banging drums, just less loops on top.

Earth People
Earth People (Pal Joey) Digi-EP
classic nyc house from 1990
There's a fine line between classic and dated. House maestro Pal Joey released this tune, a funky cross-pollination of Garage classics from Toney Lee ("Reach Up") and Dexter Wansel ("Life On Mars"), in 1990, and where you were then may influence which way you hear this cut now. This digital reissue on Joey's Cabaret label contains two mixes straight from the hard-to-find original Underworld release: the straightforward "Martian Mix" and the thundering "808 Mix," an addictive and cavernous kick drum giving this one a distinct Tenaglia / '90s New York house vibe. Also includes "Raw Mix" from equally hard to find Champion pressing.

Jody Finch
Jack Your Big Booty Digi-12
classic Chicago house
Everyone knows Farley, Adonis, Larry Heard, etc. but what about Jody "Fingers" Finch? Dude is one of the many widely unknown Chicago house producers that was jacking it up back in the mid to late 80's, and thanks to the Let's Pet Puppies label, we can enjoy some of his rare house treats. "Jack Your Big Booty" is big, stripped down jacking to the maximum with sleazy vocal samples on top. The track is reminiscent of "Work That Motherfucker" by Steve Poindexter or even "Percolator" with the raw percussion driven bounce, but it's the previously unreleased "Whistle Worm" that really got me open. Uplifting strings plus deep, deep bass, all atop a thick bed of snare, congas, and percussion. Beautifully vintage, but can definitely hang with many of today's productions. Flipside also features an extended remix of "Jack Your Big Booty" (BHQ No Acid Vocal version) by house legend Derrick Carter! Recommended.

90s nyc dance + house, includes "The Bottle" rmx
Kenny Dope's Dopewax is a legendary underground label to say the least. Since 1990, it has released somewhere in the range of 100 singles, everything from original productions to white label style releases. This comp collects 15 of those highlights from the label's early years, representing diverse genres such as house, electro, and latin dance. If you're looking for that nineties nyc dance sound, look no further. Highlights include Dope's classic remix of "The Bottle," the hard thumping "Jam The Mace," the "Mexican" remix "Chicanos II," the drum track "Bassline II" and my personal favorite "Petey Wheatstraw Returns."

Marcus Mixx
T.A.P. / Psychousic Digi-12
classic 80s Chicago house
Second recent release from Lets Pet Puppies label, who have again dug in Marcus Mixx's archives. This time they've uncovered some vintage Chicago circa 1987. "Tits Ass And Pussy" is an obvious precursor to the whole Ghettotech genre, and it's all up in your grill. "Ass N Titties" seems tame in comparison as Marcus gets ridiculously loose on the mic (picture a metal singer told to do some impromptu X-rated shouts over a techno beat after polishing off a bottle of Makers). Definitely, one of the most genuinely don't give a funk tracks you'll encounter. "Psychousic" is a more utilitarian track in comparison, it makes a great addition to your classic house or electro sets.

Unexpected treat here with this 1988 nugget of vintage chicago house. This obscure release features two mixes by the man, the legend, Ron Hardy. "Without Makeup" is simply stunning. It reminds me of Aphex Twin's playful, nostalgia-driven tracks. Love the drum programming... the whole thing comes on like electronic rain. B-side features "The Spell," this one is a bit darker, but equally sublime. Recommended.

Moby
Go Remixes Digi-EP
breakthrough 1991 dance classic
Moby may have drank the commercial kool-aid, but his later success was built upon his groundbreaking early nineties work. "Go" was the apex of those years, achieving undisputable anthem status. For a song born in the rave years, "Go" has surprisingly held up quite well. It wouldn't sound out of place mixed in with "Plastic Dreams," or better, "Stella." This set features the radio edit (the one you'll recognize immediately), the extended original version, and 4 versions reworked by Moby himself (the Rainforest mix is my favorite). Recommended for its classic status.

MYPD
You're Not Alone Digi-EP
big room remake and remixes of Olive's worldwide hit
No, this is not a remake of MJ's "You Are Not Alone" (though how awesome would that be?), it's an updated remake of OLIVE's worldwide 90's hit. This track was so so huge when it came out that everybody from Oakenfold, Roni Size, Nightmares on Wax, and X-Press 2 remixed it. Fast forward over a decade later and now the track is getting covered by MYPD and Lyz with a slew of new remixes. Pretty much any version you pick will induce big room reactions just from the nature of the track (EVERYONE will recognize the vocals). Go for the Micha Moor Remix or the the Mondo Remix if you wanna bang 'em out with dirty new electro synth style or the Daniel Winter Remix if you wanna get 'em doing the Nordic Track Trance hop or the Tecktonik. Lots of PLUR to go around on this one.

Loop-D-Loop #15 Digi-12
dance tracks with Detroit and jazz influence
Number 15 (circa 1997) in Pal Joey's long-running Loop-D-Loop series (there's somewhere around 20 volumes). The ever-versatile Pal Joey drops a jazzy, soulful house set with hints of the Detroit sound. "Runnin In Circles" sounds like a Larry Heard track, while the simplicity and quirkiness of "My Girl" reminds of Theo Parrish. "The Flight" is the jazzed out with the live sax of Tom Smith, and is Joey's own style all the way.

Ron Trent
Altered States Digi-EP
Classic Chicago house
One of house music's most influential tracks, first released in 1990 on Chicago's Warehouse Records, gets re-issued on the resurrected Prescription Records label out of Chicago. "Altered States" is an early 90s techno / house classic, with unforgettable strings, heavy bass, and some super sick drum programming. Of course, "Altered States" has been remixed and reissued on countless labels over the years, but Ron Trent re-releases it in its original format, complete with the original b-sides. On the flip, "Afterlife" continues the feel of "Altered States" while "Making Love" is yet another beautiful deep house/techno groove. Recommended.

Ron Trent
Cinematic Travels Digi-EP
melodic Chicago house from one of the genre's OGs
Ron Trent with another gem on his Prescription Classics imprint out of Chicago. These tracks were originally released in 2007 on Trent's album for Japan's Village Again label. "From Above" is a lush, beautiful, deep piece of electronic music, with nice conga work and loads of gorgeous, layered melodies as we have come to expect from Trent over the years. The album version of "From Above" is more like a long interlude, with the percussion and melodies going off without the kick. Last up, "World Travels" is another stunner, a lot slower, with more of that signature Ron Trent sound. These are perfect early morning tracks, classic house music that should be a part of every head's collection.

SL2, aka Slipmatt & Lime, were early cult-heroes in the early nineties Rave-Breakbeat scene with their groundbreaking 1991 crossover hit "DJ's Take Control." They brought a happy-ragga sound that still comes across to this day. 1992's "On A Ragga Tip" was their biggest hit (hitting #2 on UK Pop Charts!). It even warranted this remix single back in 1997. This includes the original mix, as well as several remixes, one by Slipmatt himself. I'd stick the original for nostalgia factor, but the Goodfello remix also has an updated electro feel that you might be able to pull off.

1994 house anthem + cool downtempo beats
Mid-nineties rave-era records like this will always have a soft spot in my collection. This was a big record on the 6 x 6 label and featured the anthem "Bells of NY" (the House 2 House Mix is the popular one here). However, what really fascinated me about these type of records were the downtempo mixes that would nicely hidden on the inner tracks. Check the bassed-out Summer Breaks Mix and the Phatbackes Jeep Mix, both top notch cut and paste tracks. B-side "I Feel High" is pretty cool in retrospect with its feelgood deep-house vibes. all-time classic house track, crossover
Maybe this signals the digital floodgates in terms of classic NYC house music. Soho's "Hot Music" is a house track that's made the rare crossover to the hip-hop crowds. You'll even find this acceptable in the middle of a soul classic set. DJs have been using this to transition to and from house (or vice-versa) for years. There's not much more to say about this soulful, jazzed-out all-timer. This digital EP includes several other Soho tracks including the 2003 revisited versions "More Hot Music" and "Subway Series," plus the downtempo track "Keep It Together" which references the Raphael Saadiq's "Get Involved." The Bucketheads
The Bomb (Kenny Dope) Digi-EP
classic house track. period.
"The Bomb" is as classic as classic gets- just one of those very few guaranteed records. Play it at weddings, play it for kindergarten parties, fuck it, play it in the middle of a jiggy hip hop set. People love this track and always will. It's fun, makes booties shake, and always causes people to try and beatbox the horn solo. Ok, Kenny Dope (Masters at Work) did rip off Chicago's "Street Player" pretty much in its entirety, but who cares? He added that "pumping" house beat that Language hates ("a re-edit is always better than a remix" -whatever Herman Munster) and made it build up for eight minutes before dropping the horn break and then the vocal. I need to say this again: people go nuts over this record. Play it loud, and watch the people eat it up. Recommended.

The Prodigy
Experience: Expanded Digi-LP
seminal 1992 rave-breakbeat album, anthems galore
Seminal 1992 rave album. I'm not gonna lie, this was my shit back then and it still kinda is (even though some of it sounds like cheer-routine music from Bring It On). I love this breakbeaty, sped-up sample stuff (it's possible that without albums like this, I would have never started the Lab). While contemporaries like The Bassbin Twins and DJ Icee were strictly lo-fi, The Prodigy performed on a grand level of precision layers and melodies (and wacked-out back-up dancers). Producer Liam Howlett was definitely way ahead of the pack back then... the Mozart of rave music. Too much ANTHEMS. If you need a reminder check these: "Out Of Space Everybody In The Place, Your Love, Charly, Jerichoâ and "Wind It Up.â Plus this "expanded" version collects 11 additional remixes and rarities not on the original release. techno-rave-breakbeat anthem circa 92
If I were to pick one track to take from the early nineties rave scene "Out Of Space" would probably be it. Ideas like "I'll take your brain to another dimension" just had so much more weight back then? What about pairing Max Romeo's with breakbeats and rave piano, genius or madness? Whatever the case, this song still puts a smile on my face and doesn't make me want to vomit. In fact, Diplo played it at our WMC party, and it sounded pretty damn good on the loud system. Henrik Schwarz, Ame & Dixon Present: Grandfather Paradox Digi-LP
early minimal and experimental electronic music
Henrik Schwarz, Ame and Dixon (all techno legends, in their own right) really went conceptual when compiling this compilation on the origins of minimal techno. Some of the tracks here, like Robert Hood's "Minus," Pyrolator's "November Muulheim," or Raymond Scott's "Bassline Generator," represent the first, pioneering days of the genre in the 1990s. Others go back even further and serve as examples of early minimal music that predates the existence of techno itself. Definitely a musical field trip for fans of electronic music. Also features tracks from Cymande (yep, that Cymande), Young Marble Giants, Kenneth Bager and others.

This is Acid! Everyone knows the Trax label is as important to Acid House as the TB-303. The legendary Chicago label fueled the underground dance scene of the mid-to-late-80's with release after release - many of which naturally turned into sought-after classics and have become hard to come by these days on original 12" format. Thankfully Trax has compiled some of the most jackin' acid tracks of the era onto proper digital format, all in loud and crispy sound quality (much better than the original Trax vinyl pressings, some of which were pretty bad!). Check the sounds of Phuture's 12 minute epic "Acid Trax" and the hard hitting "Slam," Adonis' funky acid groove on "Two The Max," Van Christie's stompin' "That Shit's Wild," Farley Jackmaster Funk's "The Acid Life," Mike "The Hitman" Wilson's "Bango Acid," and Maurice's infamous jam "This is Acid." Essential for fans of the original acid sound.

Trax Records: Rarities & B-Sides Digi-LP
Chicago house and acid
This compilation digs deeper into the vast Trax catalog and shines light on many lesser-known Chicago house tracks that bang. Everyone know's Adonis' "Rockin Down The House," but do you remember the Basement Jaxx remix? Or how about the filtered house sounds of Bustafunk, reminiscent of some early Daft? This comp even features the early ghettotech sound of Mike Dunn's "Magic Feet," obscure jackin' acid like Screamin Rachel's "My Main Man," and the classic "In The City" by Liz Torres.

Wild Boys
Do Your Thing (Pal Joey) Digi-12
early 90's cut & paste house
Another lost house nugget from Cabaret's back catalog unearthed. The Wild Boys is an alias for the legendary Pal Joey and on Do Your Thing he flexes some left field cut & paste styles - part funky, part jackin', part deep. 3 mixes for your pleasure.
