Auralux investigates the deep roots work of producer Winston "Niney" Holmes, collecting many rare sides and extended mixes here from the peak of his recording career, that fruitful mid-late 70s period. Niney was one of those 70s producers who knew how to balance the experimental dub techniques with the straightforward toughness of the music, often lacing his songs with weirdness but never straying too far from the dancehall. Some wicked tunes nestled in here, with almost all of them appearing in extended and/or dj versions. The highlight for me is two versions of Gregory Isaacs' "Rock On," both the original 12" version with female answer vocal from Christine, and a heavy horns mix which is followed by the "Murderer Observer Style" dub. The Cool Ruler indeed. Other "name" appearances include Horace Andy on "Them Never Tell I," three tracks from Dennis Brown (check "Jah Is Watching You"), and Leroy Smart's "Jah Is My Light." As you would expect from the Auralux guys, there's also some great stuff from unknowns like The Rock Tone Band ("Burn Me Out"), The Jewels ("Jah I"), Ranking Buckers, Mr Stone and others. 14 tracks.
