the patented lab review lab informed suggestions
Volume 1 starts off heavier than lead with "Invaders," Scientist deconstructing the elements of Al Cambell's "Unfaithful Child" into a beautiful mess of voices, percussion hits and cymbal washes. Al Cambell tracks make a few other appearances in this set too, most notably on the double time stunner "Dark Side"- gotta wait until about the half way point for the vocals to come and tie the whole thing up. Scientist's timing is just ridiculous on that one. Also check the king kong bass and Freddie McKay vocals on "Beaming," and the further bass exploration "Time Passage." This is what it's all about folks. The second volume continues with the good shit, starting with "Earth," a version of the Viceroy's "I'm Trying On" that sounds more Jammy than Scientist to me... wicked cut in any case. Linval Thompson shows up on "Denial," Anthony Johnson's Africa gets dubbed for "Base" and "Contact" is probably my favorite cut on here. Strictly bass and occasional drum hits for the first minute, then vocals, then.... drums. Crashing Scientist drums. These recordings come from some of the last true dub sessions at King Tubby's, when the wits and intelligence of the engineers were laid out right before your eyes. No computer business here. Recommended.
