the patented lab review lab informed suggestions
I had no idea what I was in for when I first picked this album up. From the opening tune, Big Joe's "In The Ghetto," I was immediately sold on the Blood and Fire label with its distinctive design (bit many times since), informative and lengthy liner notes and simply top notch roots music in the heaviest tradition. All production here is courtesy of Bunny "Striker" Lee, voiced and mixed at King Tubbys during the height of his powers. Tubby is most acclaimed nowadays for his solo dub excursions, but I think that these deejay tracks (where he is just as inventive on the boards) are where it's really at... the combination of things like Jah Stitch voicing "Set Up Yourself Dreadlocks" over a perfect Tubbys dub is just fucking gold bricks (thanks to Cornell on the original lyrics). What about Alimantado and Stitch messing around over a storming Ali Baba version for "The Barber Feel It"? Jah Stitch has a grip of big tunes on here, including the killer "Greedy Girl" simply one of the toughest riddims I've ever heard. Prince Jazzbo's "Good Memories" flips the sound with the sweetest Johnny Clarke melody over that always cool double drum sound. 16 tracks total, highly recommended.
