the patented lab review lab informed suggestions
After noticing the recent Lab foray into Dubstep, a couple of our UK customers tipped us to this album, which apparently is being heralded as the biggest dubstep album of the year. And not only is it the biggest album, it's getting raves as one of those groundbreaking, never heard before-type works. "Distant Lights" is a promising opener; it invokes that feeling of the calm before the storm. "Space Ape" is a shot of the strange with these inescapable, dark witch doctor vocals. That serves as a vocal introduction to the rest of the album, which is comprised of these sparse instrumental tracks like "Southern Comfort" and "Gutted." I took a real shining to "Broken Home," which features vocal snippets that sound like Sizzla. Interspersed between the instrumentals you'll find these ambient, atmospheric tracks, which gives this album the appearance of a completed work. I can see what the hype is about, but at the same time I would have liked more vocals. It's part goth, part movie soundtrack, part dark video game. 13 tracks in all.
