Tremor
Viajante Digi-LP
downtempo meets south american folk music
Tremor combines rhythms and sound across genre borders, fitting component parts of varying tradition together in eloquent symmetry. The artist breaks sound barriers across South America and presents his digital folklore tracks to a new, global audience. On his last record, "Viajante," Tremor executes folklore melody through a digital context. Layers of rhythm are fortified with modern synth loops and paired with timeless Andean flute, strings and drum samples for evocative hybrids. Glitch, IDM, and electronica reinvent classic rhythms for today's listener.

Ikonika
Smuck Digi-12
synthy mutant dubstep
Cool hybrid dubstep sounds from Ikonika on the esteemed Planet Mu label. As one of the few female representers in the genre, Ikonika brings an emotive feminine touch to "Smuck," a track that unabashedly mixes dubstep, electronica, garage and funky styles with plenty of bleps, bloops, and various other synth noodlings going on over the top. On "We Could Be Ikons," Ikonika remixes Skweee (that Scandinavian brand of funky synth based electronica) producer Eero Johannes for some catchy, steppin' grooves.

FaltyDL
To London Digi-12
uk garage meets new school beats
After several release on Planet Mu, FaltyDL has moved over to Ramp Recordings, bringing his brand of mutant beats to this super-hot label. "To London" is like a hybrid of UK garage and new school beats, it's got a great movement about it. "Metacognist" is a great piece of head music. Falty twists up samples into an undulating wave, and gotta love those crisp drums. Lastly, "Tom@Ramp" is an abstract 80s electro track. Recommended.

Clouds
Timekeeper / Timekeeper (Ras G Remix) Digi-12
IDM and digi-dub
Clouds, who have previously appeared on Jahtari, pop up on UK label Ramp Recordings. "Timekeeper" is an unexpected treat, mixing IDM and dub styles (leaning more on the IDM side). Very intricate stuff. On the flip, Ras G of Poobah Records, provides the remix which enhances both the beats and the ragga quotient. Been really feeling anything Ras touches these days.

Ras G & The Afrikan Space Program
Destination There Digi-EP
downtempo, digi-dub, pick
The UK's Ramp Recordings continues to poach the top beatmakers, this time tapping Ras G of Cali's Poobah label. Ras has been at the forefront of the abstract beats scene by consistently delivering artistic, heady beat singles. On the A-side, Ras sets up the atmosphere with "The Wind Speaks," a soundscape-style track. "1derful Begins" wakes you up from the dream with sharp digi-dubs to your dome. I love the wreckless abandon style of the samples. After another digi-dub piece "Time Will Heal," Ras settles into his sweet spot of jazzy downtempo with "Lisa Bonet" and "Spacewayz." Another satisfying release, recommended.

Party Digi-12
excellent non-traditional beats
After several release on Planet Mu, FaltyDL has moved over to Ramp Recordings, bringing his brand of mutant beats to this super-hot label. "Party" uses a familiar Falty theme, weaving soul vocals into a beatscape. "Alphafun" is a dark as night beat that conjures up nightmares and muggings.

Subatomic Sound System
Blackboard Jungle Vol. 1 Respect the Foundation Digi-Ep
heavy versions of Lee Perry's "Blackboard Jungle"
Inspired by the Lee Perry's dub classic Blackboard Jungle Dub, Vienna's Dubblestandart is in works with Perry himself for a new collaboration album. In the meantime, they're dropping limited edition singles of Lee Perry versions (the first "Iron Devil" is already out of print). This, the second in the series, features four completely remade versions of "Blackboard Jungle." To take on this heavyweight task, Dubblestart has enlisted the help of NYC's Subatomic Sound System (Bastard Jazz) and vocalist Jahdan (of "Sound Bwoy Buriell" fame).

Zomby
Liquid Dancehall Digi-12
video game inspired dubstep beats
Big tunes! Zomby's gettin' wild with the video game sounds on his latest release on UK's Ramp Records. "Strange Fruit" sounds like the illest level of some NES shooter you never got to play. Either that or some master level Tetris shit. So sick. "Liquid Dancehall" gets equally rude with that nasty minimal bass rumble coupled with a proper ragga sample drop and spaced out 8-bit bleeps and bloops to take the dancefloor back to the future.

Zomby
The Lie (LV Remix) Digi-EP
wicked dubstep with jungle influences
Big tunes from Zomby repressed! After hearing these tracks, it is pretty clear as to how Zomby catapulted into the top ranks of the dubstep/ravestep scene. The wicked rhythm off "The Lie" just creeps in your soul, while the bass takes you deep and the keys tickle your skin. Check the nastiness on "Dripping Like Water" that rolls heavy with tons of junglist-inspired elements, though not at all jungle in a sense of the tempo. Also includes the tough LV remix of "The Lie". Recommended.

Zomby
One Foot Ahead Of The Other Digi-LP
bleepy dubstep with rave and garage influences
Highly anticipated and much hyped release from UK's Zomby on Ramp Recordings. Zomby made a huge impact in the bass scene with his rave- influenced brand of bleep-heavy dubstep on Hyperdub, and One Foot Ahead Of The Other is the perfect follow-up. The tracks take elements from grime, dubstep, rave, bassline nd glitch and put them together in a super-accessible way so the dancefloor will just eat it up. Check the swift garage shuffle of "Expert Tuition" and "Firefly Finale," the heavy slo-mo burn of "Godzilla," the sinister slump of "Helter Skelter," "Polka Dots" and the killer title track(6). Already getting major play from key players like Kode 9, Ikonika, and the Rinse FM show. Recommended.

RAM 15x15 Vol 2 Digi-LP
drum and bass label comp
Round 2! To celebrate 15 years of amazing drum n bass music, Ram Records has put together this sweet label compilation comprised of 15 tracks (one for each year) spanning from 1992 to the present. As an old DnB head myself, this is like the ultimate throwback. But if you weren't into the scene at the time (or maybe you recently discovered the power of bass through dubstep or electro), this is a great way to catch up on some history. The comp features many celebrated anthems from the DnB scene, from early classics are featured like Origin Unknown's "The Touch Remix," Andy C's "Cool Down," and Shimon's "Nightflight," to more modern heaters like Ram Trilogy's frantic "Chase Scene," Origin Unknown's "Sound In Motion," plus hardstep bangers like Moving Fusion's "Turbulence" and Sub Focus' "Juno."

Sabo & Zeb
Sol Selectas #8 Digi-EP
dubby beats, latin dance, dancehall
Sabo with the eighth entry in his super-popular and also reliable Sol Selectas series. This volume is an unofficial continuation of Sabo and Zeb's recent Global Warmbeats album. It features three unreleased tracks by the duo plus a remix by Om's J-Boogie. "Pomba Giro" sounds like a summer anthem to me, while "Over The Ocean" is a must for collectors of dubby, reggae beats. Recommended.

Kite In The Air
Kite In the Air Digi-EP
fast paced electro-pop
The debut EP from San Fransico's Kite In The Air is a nice blend of indie-pop and uptempo dance. Songs like "The Plan," "Builder" and "Take It Or Leave It" are all built on uptempo, sparse electronic beats and feature vocals that you normally hear in indie pop tracks. The end result turns out like an updated version of The Postal service, without all the overwrought metaphors. Check out the excellent ballad "Filed Away" at the end for a nice ethereal finale. Five tracks total.

5: Five Years of Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9, Joker, Zomby) Digi-LP

MASSIVE release from London's Hyperdub label. Hyperdub has been at the forefront of the dubstep movement, pushing things forward with progressive releases from the scene's brightest producers (including Burial, Kode9, Joker, Flying Lotus, Cooly G, Martyn and Zomby) for the past five years. This hefty label comp brings the best that Hyperdub has to offer including many notorious classics, anthems, and a few slept-on gems. This thing is serious! Speech Debelle
Spinnin' Digi-EP
UK hip-hop from mercury prize winner
If you want to hear what the hype is about, this a good place to start. Winner of 2009's Mercury prize for best new artist, Speech Debelle drops a catchy blend of hip-hop and uk grime. "Spinnin" immediately draws you in with a feelgood quality, no doubt borrowing the blueprint from Trick Daddy's "I'm A Thug." Also includes three dance remixes which show Debelle's harder edge.

Noah D
Killing Time (feat. Einstein) Digi-12
dancehall vocals over dubstep and drum and bass beats
Noah D is back with another slice of dubstep, and this time he's brought dancehall deejay Einstein to lend his voice to the tracks. The original mix of "Killing Time" while Einstein sings about, to put it mildly, his frustrations in regards to his finances and career, and what he plans to do about it. Also featured is the D&B mix, where Noah gives it up for all the ragga junglists out there. Boh!

WZRDZ
WZRDZ Are Awshum Digi-EP
dubstep and electro
Diverse new EP from the Brooklyn/Bay Area duo WZRDS. "Conjuror" is a thunderous dubstep track that goes from 0 to 60 in about two seconds, and "Mompa" keeps the energy level up with its electro/dubstep hybrid sounds. Things slow down a little on "Sharona," with an 808 break beat and some distorted synths, but then "Jungleishous" cranks things right back up with its fast pace, glitchy vocal samples and distorted appegiations. This stuff will definitely drive the raver kids wild if you drop it around 3am.

Mary Anne Hobbs - Wild Angels (Rustie, Starky, Nosaj Thing) Digi-LP
excellent comp of new school beats
What Gilles Peterson was to the emerging jazz and soul oriented dance scene, Mary Anne Hobbs is to the new school beats scene. Host of the BBC's Experimental Show, Hobbs has become one of the top curators of Dilla-inspired beats, dubstep, and all the offshoots. This highly anticipated Planet Mu compilation, (her third for the label) expectedly reads like a Lab downtempo bestsellers chart with Hudson Mohawke, Mike Slott, Nosaj Thing, Rustie, Mono/Poly, Starkey, Floating Points, etc. But equally important, there's a more producers we've never touched before. It's like Christmas in here. 19 tracks in all, recommended.

Lead single from Bassnectar's upcoming album. The Bay Area producer comes HARD with some serious dubstep bass that lives up to the name "Cozza Frenzy." Also includes the "Mega Bass Remix" which adds some sick laser synth shit to the original, and Z-Trip's Hellrazor Remix.
