OVERVIEW
Vestax has brought back this classic line of affordable club / installation dj mixers, with this being your entry level piece. The DSM-410 is a four channel mixer with all the basic functions that you need in the club- quite a bit more effective than your standard $199 mixer. Like all the mixers in the DSM series, this isn't recommended if your priority is scratching, but it's a fine mixer for anybody looking to step up their selector game.
FEATURES
The DSM-410's main draw is its club functionality. Not only do you have the option of 7 line inputs, 3 phono inputs and 2 mic inputs, you also get semi-professional features like XLR outs in addition to standard RCA, and a booth output with level control and 2 band EQ. These things are all essential for club use. The mic inputs include XLR on the mixer face (mic 1) and ¼" on the back (mic 2), with 3 band EQ for mic 1, level controls for both and a talkover switch.
The EQs on this mixer are also quite impressive. You have 3 bands for each channel (knob controlled), with a range of -30dB / +15dB for hi, mid and low. The LED meter can be switched to show both channels of the master, or one channel master + the active program channel (useful for mixing). The crossfader is pretty much like your standard mid-90s fader, there's no curve adjustment and the feeling is a bit rough, but they are Vestax VMC faders, which have a fairly quick cut in time and should last longer than your standard entry level stuff. Bottom line is that you can cut with this mixer- and it will sound good- but strictly the basics, and if you're really concerned about scratching, you're looking at the wrong mixer.
OUR OPINION
This mixer is perfect for people who are mainly concerned with mixing records and having an effective mixer to use in the club. The XLR outs means your sound will be bumping, the 2 mic ins give you crowd control, and the booth output lets you monitor the sound. It's all basic stuff, but these features are not usually included on $199 mixers. The EQs are also really effective, and with the number of input options here, most people should be all set.
