OUR OPINION
For under $100, Intro gives you everything you need to create and perform your tracks. Though it isn't as loaded as the full version of Live or Live Suite, the limitations in Intro do not affect the sound or quality of the music you create in Intro. The limitations are very reasonable considering the price (i.e. you're limited to 64 audio tracks, 2 effect sends, 12 Ableton effects at once, etc.). For a full comparison chart click here. Even with the limitations, this is still an incredible value for the price and an excellent way to get into producing with Live. Recommended.

OUR OPINION
As Akai's answer the Korg's Nano series, the LPD8 holds up very well and actually has a few advantages. While both feature ulra-slim profiles and portability, the LPD8 combines pads AND knobs in one unit (although the knobs are rather short) whereas you would have to buy 2 Nanos (the PAD and KONTROL) to get these features with Korg. It is also slightly shorter than the nanoPAD and features a nice matte finish with rounded corners. Recommended.

A must for keyboard players and producers who want to work with software need to express with real feeling keys. The added features of arpeggiator and memory make this a steal for under $70. Recommended.

Move it up and down to control one parameter, left and right for another, or even diagonal to control 2 parameters simultaneously. It's so easy to use that you really don't need to know what you're doing at all, and you will be able to master some cool sounds in about 10 seconds. Everything is done in realtime too, so you will here the effect instantaneously.

The Mini-KP features a total of 100 effects, many derived from the larger KP3, including filter, delay, and a looper. But especially effective for creative mixing is the "low/high-band pass filter" that lets you cut specific frequency ranges of sound (cut the bass out or the highs), the "decimator" that intentionally degrades the audio quality of the input to give unique impact to the sound, a much-requested "delay & reverb" combination effect (for that smooth echoed out mix effect), and the "looper & pitch shifter" that captures and repeats incoming audio, retuning it in real-time as the pad is manipulated. In addition, there are some synth sounds derived from the KP3 and many more effects that can dramatically add to your sound.

Another important feature is the built-in BPM engine. You can use the "TAP/BPM button" to detect the BPM and synchronize the Mini-KP to an audio input source, and then take advantage of the many BPM effects that are synchronized to your song or performance. There's also an "FX RELEASE" function that lets the effect sound decay gradually when you remove your finger from the pad or change effects. This makes it easy for smooth and natural sounding blending of the mini-KP's effects into your performance or mix.

Lastly is the "Hold" function that lets you fix the effect settings at a given moment, and indispensable memory keys that allow you to save your favorite settings. If you're touching the pad to apply an effect, you can use the "Hold" function to "freeze" the effect settings at any desired point. The Memory Key function lets you memorize the selected effect program, the Hold function's on/off status, and the effect depth. This lets you store your favorite effect settings for instant recall anytime.

OUR OPINION
Just like it's bigger brothers, the Mini-KP is an excellent effects unit for live DJ sets with its ease of use, hands-on control and countless effects options. With it's small size and battery operation, you can feel confident bringing it anywhere - from the home studio to the club. In addition, the Mini-KP is excellent for BPMing your records, and adding effects to your mixes. For music production, the Mini-KP offers a inexpensive way to further alter your sounds with quality Korg effects. The Mini-KP is a quality effects unit that is extremely flexibile and extremely portable.

The new MAGMA SWITCHBOX .V2 Digital-DJ makes it easier than ever to transition between two DJ's, without having to unplug the decks and mixer to connect a new soundcard. It provides a hastle-free changeover in the DJ-Booth, enabling two DJ interfaces (any model) to be connected simultaneously to a mixer (even a two channel battle mixer).

The MAGMA SWITCHBOX .V2 features a three-way selector switch to assign the signal from the decks to either interface to switch between two digital DJ setups, or send it directly to the mixer (THRU).

In addition to switching between two soundcards, the MAGMA SWITCHBOX .V2 features connections for two turntables and two CD players. A Mode switch enables either system to be controlled via CD or vinyl.

Forget the days of unplugging one deck at a time when you finish your set, and reaching behind the mixer to fish for your cables. You can now patch into the system without getting in the way of the previous DJ finishing his set. When you are ready to play your first record, just select a deck from the MAGMA SWITCHBOX .V2 and you are good to go. When you are done with your set, you can unplug at anytime without interrupting the next DJ.

Thus, the MAGMA SWITCHBOX .V2 enables the so-called "Ping-Pong or Tag Team Style" at which 2 or more DJs are alternating after each song. OUR OPINION
Since its introduction in 2007, Traktor Scratch has rapidly gained a large user base in the DJ community, especially amongst electronic music DJs. Now in its second phase, Traktor is now considered a DJ standard, on the same recognition level as Serato.

Traktor users like the software's many features including four deck control, the many effects and filters, and the overall quality of the system. Traktor has also focused on the live remixing aspect of DJing, integrating powerful loop sample and play features. In addition, with popular external add-ons like the Kontrol X1, Kontrol S4, and the Maschine, Traktor's capabilities keep expanding. Lab Recommended.

Plug Dicer in, slot it on your turntable/CDJ, and you can instantly set cue points and use them to trigger 'Hot Cues'. Or, flip Dicer into 'Auto-Loop' or 'Loop Roll' modes, to trigger loops, or 'roll' sections of the track to create climaxes, drops and glitchy breaks. Each 'mode' illuminates Dicer's pads a different colour, so you can instantly see what mode the pads in, even in dark clubs and venues.

It is also considerably smaller than popular units like the APC40 making it easier to transport to gigs. Recommended.

PRECISION CONTROL
V7 sends control information over USB at more than ten times the standard MIDI rate. This innovative communication technique yields extremely high-precision, low-latency control. Five hot-cue-assign buttons on each deck digitally mark your cues on the track. These marker points are recallable in ITCH, and you can even load Scratch LIVE cue points in ITCH. SERATO ITCH SOFTWARE
V7 comes with Serato ITCH. For one-to-one communication, each knob, button, and control on V7 corresponds exactly to that function in the software. Serato ITCH is already familiar if you use Scratch LIVE. ITCH builds on Scratch LIVE and adds some key, new features. ITCH makes timecode a thing of the past, so you won't need to worry about needles skipping or vinyl wearing out. The LStand works as a stand-alone component as well as an extension for a dj coffin or table. Remove the two bottom supports and replace them with the included clamps, and the LStand will attach onto any surface up to 2 1/8" thick. The clamps can angled in 2 different directions, allowing you to attach it both to a flat table or the vertical side of a DJ coffin. When not in use, the LStand conveniently folds flat into the box that it comes in.

There are several differences with the LStand and the HiRise stands. First, as mentioned, the HiRise can be used in several different situations, while the HiRise only works as a stand-alone component. Secondly, the LStand is much heavier than the HiRise (5.5 vs 1.5 lbs in the box). Depending on your situation, this can work for or against you. The extra weight will provide a sturdier surface, but at the expense of 4 traveling pounds. In addition, boxes to both models serve as the carrying case. The HiRise case is made of a sturdy lightweight plastic. The LStand comes in a cardboard case which will not stand up to frequent travel. Lastly, the LStand comes in at a more inexpensive price.
