OVERVIEW Korg's KM-202 merges a top quality 2-channel with numerous EQ options and crossfader adjustment with their renowned KAOSS Pad interface to create a powerful mixing tool for the creative DJ. The possibilty of adding high-end effects directly from the unit creates the...   expand review  opportunity for dynamic mixes and unique musical experiences. FEATURES The KM-202 is a 2-channel, 24-bit digital mixer that delivers huge headroom and pristine audio quality. The most unique feature of the KM-202 is the onboard Kaoss Pad which features one hundred effects (including many tap tempo BPM effects) accessible with a swipe of your finger to add unlimited creativity to your DJ sets. It is easily accesible and placed in the center of the mixer with a KAOSS button on each channel for quick, independent control of effects and FX Release function which allows reverb and delay tails to smoothly decay through preset and effect changes. DJs will also appreciate the programmable crossfader which allows you to adjust the response and curve to suit your style, and the six independent types of EQ (from powerful high-pass filters, to unique "Hyped" and "Isolator" EQ curves; plus every channel has a dedicated three-band EQ [Hi/Mid/Low] that responds in different ways according to the EQ curve) that deliver great flexibility to shape your mix and sounds. OUR OPINION With the huge success of the KAOSS Pads, it's no surprise Korg made the next logical step and created a high-end mixer with the KAOSS technology built in. They nailed everything creative DJs might want (especially advanced crossfader and EQ options) with a decent price tag. -snackmaster

REBATE OFFER: Purchase the R3 between 1/1/08 and 6/30/08 and get $200 back from Korg. Download form here. OVERVIEW Korg's R3 is a full featured synthesizer that delivers powerful analog synthesis and advanced sound creation from a compact digital keyboard paired with a...   expand review  high quality vocoder (mic included). The R3 uses the same MMT (multiple modeling technology) sound generator as its big brother the Korg RADIAS giving it thick, bold and crisp analog sounds that will definitely satisfy both beginners and experienced professionals. Its versatile synthesis modeling, ample effects and editing capabilities make it suitable for all types of music from r&b, funk, hip-hop, techno, and house, plus its MIDI I/O and USB connectivity allows it to fully integrate with and grow with your studio. FEATURES The R3's top feature is the solid analog synthesis from Korg's MMT (multiple modeling technology) engine. Usually used in much more expensive full size keyboards, this technology delivers full, rich analog sound (via 2 oscillators, 3 envelope generators, 2 LFO filters, + amp and noise generators per voice with 8 voice polyphony) all within the R3's very compact 37 key frame. Unlike many synths this size, the R3 features full size, velocity sensitive keys which makes it much easier to work with (a big complaint about the microKorg is the minikeys) and 2 timbre/8 voice performance power. In addition to MMT synthesis, the R3 also boasts several features to further shape and tweak your sound. 2 filters with selectable routing are available: Filter 1 is a multi-mode resonant design that lets you continuously vary between various low-pass, high-pass and band reject characteristics. Filter 2 has a switchable, multi-mode resonant design that also includes comb filtering, which can be made to feed back in order to boost multiple series of overtones, giving you amazing potential for generating unique tonal changes. There are also 6 virtual patches available on the R3 that simulate the patch cord functions of older synthesizers (MS and PS series Korgs), a modulation sequencer that can apply time-varying changes to a specific parameter, a 2 band EQ for each timbre with 2 insert effects, and a flexible, editable arpeggiator with 6 different arpeggio patterns built in. There are a total of 128 preset programs (16 banks x 8 programs) all of which are fully editable and feature a diverse range of sounds from highly complex synths using cross modulation, formant motion and arpeggios, to thick, warm sounds you would expect from analog modeling. The R3 also has 2 external audio input jacks that allow you to process and transform the sound from external audio sources. Create new sounds by playing other instruments and loops through the R3 and using the external audio source as a filter or oscillator. Also included is a high quality vocoder with 16 channels, adjustable level and pan for each channel, formant shift, formant motion and formant hold functions, MIDI I/O features, USB connectivity and Korg's R3 Editor software to edit and save your programs with your Mac or PC. OUR OPINION If you are familiar with the best selling Korg microKorg, think of this as a step up... a BIG step up. The powerful MMT synthesis alone is worth the price of admission, but add to that the full size keys(!), a serious vocoder, MIDI and USB functions and compact portable size and you've got a great addition to your studio set up that won't break the bank. A great synth that is loaded with features you can really get deep with. Recommended. -snackmaster

OVERVIEW Mackie's 1642-VLZ Pro is a semi-compact, fully featured analog mixer, designed for advanced home/project studios and multi-media post-production. The main function of this mixer is combining multiple audio signals (drums, bass, keys, sampler, etc) to mix into one output (monitors, headphones, master...   expand review  recorder, etc.). For example, it could be used for recording an entire band, giving each sound an individual channel or it could be used if you have a lot of gear like a sampler, drum machine, microphone, synth, etc and want to hear them all at the same time. In addition it allows you to adjust levels, eq (3 band), and add effects to the individual channels of audio. After you are satisfied with the mix, you can output that signal into a computer or cd burner. The 1642 is especially useful for those using a multi-track recorder, the four-buss system can be used to direct single audio signals to individual multi-track channels, without having to plug cables in and out or use a patch bay. In terms of quality, the 1642 offers the same ultra-low noise level that has made Mackie the industry leader in semi-pro mixers, while its semi-compact design and strong steel chassis make it ideal for live situations where separate audio signals need to be mixed. USES: - Mixing multiple (maximum of 16) audio signals - Microphone pre amplification - Adding EQ to audio signals - Multi-track recording with four-buss system FEATURES The main advantage of the 1642 over smaller models is its four buss system. Each channel is equipped with control buttons, when engaged they direct the channel's sound to a individual buss' input. The user connects each of the four buss' outputs directly to an individual input on their multi-track. With this set-up, the push of a button can send a sound directly to a channel of the multi-track with out any need for rewiring. The 10 XDR™ (Extended Dynamic Range) pre-amps with the available phantom power included on the 1642 will allow the user to record an entire band with both pro and semi-pro mics. Engineered to give professional, clean results with plenty of headroom, these mic pre-amps will greatly improve your microphone based recordings. The EQ section of the 1642 is strategically designed to give the user parametric control on all mono channels and a set 4-band EQ on the stereo channels. The four mono AUX sends and stereo AUX returns as well as eight inserts make using out board effects (like reverb, echo, compression, etc, which are not included) a simple matter of plug and play. The advanced matrix style monitor control section, gives the user plenty of options for setting up the proper monitoring environment, for both musicians and the engineer. With sixteen channels the 1642 is a the right mixer for those who want to breakout the parts of their song and mix each section individually. OUR OPINION Mackie has a tried and true reputation for making solid products at reasonable prices. As stated earlier, the main benefit of the 1642 over smaller Mackie models is its four-buss system. In creative hands, the busses' uses can go way beyond the scenario described earlier (e.g. sub-grouping compression). The 1642 has other advantages over smaller models, the four-band EQ gives the user much more control over their sounds. On the channels with parametric EQ the user is not only able to control the volume of the cut/boost curve, but also the frequency that is cut and boosted, a very useful tool for shaping sounds. Having 10 XDR™ mic pre-amps will enormously benefit those who want to record live bands. This way five pre-amps can be used to boost the drum set's gain levels, while the remaining five can be used for guitar, bass, vocals or whatever configuration you dream up. As with all Mackie boards the 1642 incorporates the ultra-low noise circuitry that has made them the market leader in compact mixers. While the 1642 isn't as compact as the 1202 it is still small enough to fit in a rack mount and its strong construction and steel chassis make it a great companion for touring.

OVERVIEW Novation's XioSynth combines a high quality USB audio interface with MIDI and high-end stand-alone synthesizer capabilities. The combination of these features in a highly affordable keyboard makes it a unique all-in-one production tool as well as an amazing bargain. In addition,...   expand review  XioSynth's compact design and USB compatibilty or battery powered function makes it an excellent choice for producers on the move. FEATURES Synthesizer The XioSynth features a mono-timbral Novation synth engine with 8-voice polyphony. In addition to 3 oscillators (17 waveforms each), 1 Filter (varying types), 2 LFOs (32 waveforms each), an arpeggiator and multi-effects board, this subtractive synth also boasts some brand new facilities such as the X-Gator patch programmer. The X-Gator can be made to gate each patch to create unique 16-32 step rhythmic patterns for every onboard sound, all automatically synchronised to MIDI clock from a sequencer; just press and hold one key to groove along to a track with style. The XioSynth also comes with 200 onboard patches which you can tweak and distort using the optional filter distortion to create an even greater range of sounds; from clean and sparkly to grimey and gritty. In addition, 60 of the patches were created by acclaimed artists and producers such as Roots Manuva, Skeewiff, Shimon and James Zabiela. Interface The XioSynth's included USB powered interface features 2 Audio Ins / 2 Outs for high quality recording and playback as well as 1 MIDI out and 1USB MIDI in/out. An onboard interface like this is rare to find on a keyboard and allows you to record from the inputs, as well as simultaneously stream the onboard synth audio directly to the sequencer via the USB cable. MIDI Controller In addition to synthesizing and audio interfacing, the keyboard is also a comprehensive MIDI keyboard with 49 semi-weighted keys, a control surface with 11 knobs and buttons (doubled to 22 by a Group A/B switch), plus a freely assignable Touchpad and joystick. All of these controls are pre-programmed in 16 onboard Templates, so that the XioSynth can instantly control many software applications straight out the box. Add to this many more Templates online, a free Template Editor software application and hybrid modes for simultaneous synthesizing and MIDI controlling, and you have an extremely versatile package for producing or performing. Additional features include rubberized pitch and mod wheels, backlit LCD display, sustain pedal input, USB, 9V DC, or 6x AA battery powered, and MAC or PC compatiblity. -snackmaster

OVERVIEW It's an established fact that CD technology is at a point where creating players that simulate vinyl djing is not a problem. We now have at least 4 different brands making CD players that can duplicate the vinyl experience with scary precision,...   expand review  so what sets them apart is their extra features and functionality. With the CDX, Numark has expanded your options with yet another unique entry into the CD turntable market. While other CD turntables have only mimicked the construction of a standard vinyl turntable, the CDX actually looks and feels exactly like one. The design of the CDX is based closely on that of Numark's popular TTX-1 turntable and features a real 12" record as the controlling surface. It's as close as you can get to using a standard turntable while playing a cd. FEATURES The construction of the CDX is truly its main attraction. The basic layout is very similar to their TTX turntable, about the same size, with the dual start/stop buttons on either side of the platter so you can position the turntable in standard or "battle" direction. The platter is the same height as a normal turntable and is run by a very high torque (5.0kg) direct drive motor, with adjustable controls for start and stop times. Slipmat included. You can also swap out the standard Numark 12" with any record of your choice. The pitch control has an impressive range of ±6, 12, 25 and 100%, accompanied by the necessary key lock (master tempo) feature that allows vocals to stay in key even when the tempo is dramatically increased. The CDX also features a fairly broad choice of internal effects (echo, kill, sonar, filter, etc) which you can control with a dedicated wheel, multiple play modes for different scratching effects, looping functions, and an internal memory capable of storing up to a very high 3000 cue points. OUR OPINION All roads of opinion on the Numark CDX have to come back to its design and feel. If you are looking for a CD player that functions like a vinyl turntable- and even looks & feels just like a vinyl turntable- this is your best option. The performance is more than satisfactory, with enough cd-player type functions to keep most of us interested. There may not be as many advanced functions on the CDX as other players in this market range, but Numark has nailed the ones that are most commonly used. -the mgmnt

OVERVIEW Modeled after Numark's successful CDX tabletop cd player, the HDX marks a new field of music players and controllers. The major difference between this machine and other digital media players is that it features its own on-board hard drive in addition to...   expand review  a CD drive. This hard drive and the on-board interface allow for features that are simply unavailable on any other media players at the moment. One of the big ones is the ability to record tracks or your dj set through the analog input- even while the HDX is engaged in playback. FEATURES The HDX's on-board hard drive is fairly substantial at 80GB, and upgradeable with any standard 2.5" hard drive. This not only allows you to store a large amount of files directly on your player, but also works with an on-board interface that opens up a wealth of options. To begin with, the hard drive can read / play MP3, WMA, WVA, Ogg Vorbis, and FLAC formats. You can rip songs from CDs directly in the unit or drag + drop from your computer via USB connection. The interface is particularly useful. It not only provides easy search and filing functions (playlists), but also comes equipped with Gracenote for automatically gathering track information such as artist, title, album, genre and even BPM. The HDX also includes support for connecting a keyboard (useful for both entering track information and searching), and they even go so far as to include a one for you. Another great advantage to having an on-board hard drive is the fact that you can record your dj sets or anything else through the analogue (RCA) input, even while you have the HDX engaged in playback. In terms of actual functionality, Numark has already established that they can make a great vinyl-simulating digital player with the CDX. The HDX features much of the same design, with a real 12" record for the platter (user replaceable) that acts in exactly the same way as a standard vinyl turntable. The platter features a maxed out 4.7kg-cm torque, which not only makes it feel like a real turntable, but also makes your mixing and scratching that much tighter. The pitch control can be adjusted up to +/- 100% with key control so that it still sounds ok. You also get important digital controls like smart looping, cue markers, onboard effects, and an auto beatcounter that synchs up effects, loops and MIDI devices. OUR OPINION The HDX offers yet another option for playing and transporting your sound, and a very good one at that. If you aren't going to go the traditional vinyl plus Serato route (which seems to be the standard these days), this could be your best option. It is a great self contained machine that will suit some people extremely well, and it's probably the most efficient, user-friendly digital player on the market. -the mgmnt

OVERVIEW The TT-500 is a stream-lined, non-digital version of Numark's top of the line TTX turntable. It comes with all the basic features which have made the TTX such a respected turntable: extra powerful motor, quality metal construction, and a variety of user...   expand review  options such as interchangeable straight and s-shaped tonearms. FEATURES The same motor is used in the TT-500 as the TTX, which gives it the ultra-high torque rating of 5.0 kgf/cm (stronger than the Technics 1200). This means your start & stop times are extremely fast, and the platter will have no problem regaining speed while you are scratching or backcue-ing. The platter also features a grooved design which also reduces drag and friction. Start-up and brake time are adjustable with small wheels next to the start/stop buttons. The TT-500 can play at 33, 45 or 78 rpm, and features a selectable pitch control range of 8, 10, 20 or 50%. Both straight and S-shaped tonearms are included with the TT-500. The tonearms attach to the turntable with a design similar to a headshell connection, allowing for easy switching (s-shaped tonearms are ideal for sound quality, mixing, and general djing while straight tonearms are "unskippable" and best for heavy scratching). Likewise, it features dual start/stop buttons so that you can comfortably position your turntable in either hip hop style (sideways) or mix style. The tonearm also is completely adjustable, with height adjustment, arm pick-up lever, and anti-skate. And finally, the construction is top notch, with a steel top, rubberized bottom, aluminum platter and aluminum die-cast tonearm assembly. OUR OPINION This is another impressive Numark turntable which offers outstanding features for its price range. If you don't require the digital features of the TTX, the TT-500 is your best option, coming in a full hundred dollars below the TTX's price and offering the same high quality construction and performance. There's simply nothing else in the "under $300" range that comes close. -mgmnt

Because Reason 3.0 comes prepared for a majority of the controllers on the market, all you have to do is hook up your hardware and fire up Reason - no tedious configuration required. Reason 3.0 comes with complete Remote mappings for each of the supported controllers. OUR OPINION Reason is a very powerful program. The options for effecting your music are endless. If you like this potential, Reason is an excellent choice. You can start and end a track all within Reason with endless variations. For others, the many features may be too daunting and sometimes confusing. For those in the middle, Propellerheads offers a very comprehensive website and informative forums on their website. In our experience, electronic and dance producers tend to favor Reason, while hip-hop producers tend to go for less complex programs. -the mgmnt

OVERVIEW The SP-606 is a strong contender in the mid-level range of samplers and drum machine style workstations. Those who want more features than the SP-303, but are not ready to invest the money and time into an Akai MPC-2000, will find...   expand review  that the SP-606 is a solid choice. The SP-606 has all the features you need for making beats and phrase sampling; plus some high-end features you wouldn't expect in this price range. The SP-606's compact size makes it road/gig worthy as well, which compares favorably to the Akai MPC 1000 for a couple hundred dollars less. USES - make tracks at home or on the road - edit tracks on your PC with included software - sampler and MIDI Sequencer - video controller FEATURES Firstly, the SP-606 comes bundled with Cakewalk's P606 software (PC only), which allows you to completely edit and manipulate the samples in your 606 from your computer, via its USB connection. This is a very important feature not found on other samplers, and increases the power of this unit immensely. It gives you the best of both worlds: the ease and simplicity of working on hardware and the precision of working on a computer. The layout of the SP-606 is similar to rest of the Boss/Roland SP series, whose design is based on the success of the Akai's MPC series. It features sixteen (16) velocity sensitive pads and an 18,000 note capacity 4-track sequencer, as well as 3 knobs for real time control of the 40 built-in effects. These on-board effects include basic types like filters, reverb, compression, low boost and tape echo, as well as esoteric effects you will only find on Roland products like a feedback ripper, space-d, and a voice transformer. The 606 also features a mastering effect to have your music sounding as loud and crispy as possible after your song is all mixed down. The graphic LCD screen allows you to edit the start and stop time of your samples fast and easily with waveforms, as well as giving you step-by-step control of your sequences. Some of the features of the SP-606 can only be found on Roland products and thus gives the machine a unique character. The 606's D-Beam allows you to control your sounds and samples with hand movements similar to the way a Theremin works. Also included on the SP-606 is Roland's new V-Link, which when used with Edirol's DV-7PR or P-1 (sold separately) allows you to trigger and control live or pre-recorded video clips. The bpm synch feature makes time stretching samples to match the rest of the song an automatic operation. The 606 comes with a CompactFlash slot for storing your samples and adding memory to the already built in 5-11 minutes (depending on quality) of sample memory. Samples can be recorded through the stereo analog and digital inputs or you can choose to import or record AIFF. & Wav. files with its USB port. Other connections include stereo analog & digital (coaxial) INs & OUTs, MIDI IN & OUT, an optional footswitch control and a headphone jack. OUR OPINION Roland's SP-606 is a smart choice for those who want a full featured sampler but are not ready to invest a lot of money into one machine. The feel and look is very hands on and intuitive, much like Akai's MPC series. What separates the 606 from other samplers in this price range is the included software, the D-Beam & V-Link features as well as the forty built-in effects. The 606's only weakness when compared to the MPC 1000 is that the sequencer consists of only 4-tracks (compared to the MPC 1000's 99). However this is really more of a difference in taste than anything else, as multiple patterns can still be recorded with the 606, and the its sequencer is a little less complicated and faster to operate than the MPC 1000's. On the positive side PC users will find the P606 software extremely useful when it comes time for doing some complicated cutting and chopping of samples. The SP-606 is an easy to use machine. It is laid out so that you can jump in and start making beats right out of the box, but its features are sophisticated enough that you could spend hours using it and still only scratch the surface of what it is capable of. -the mgmnt

OVERVIEW These are the same as Shure's E2c earbuds, with the addition of being cellphone compatible. The i2c's are actually designed with a cord that splits into dual adaptors so that you can have your phone and ipod / mp3 player connected at...   expand review  the same time. They include a VoicePort in-line microphone, so all you have to do is switch the function over to "phone" when it rings and you are good to talk. Very convenient. Shure's E-series of earphones were originally designed for professional musicians for recording and performance. They were developed with emphasis on both accuracy and sound isolation, 2 factors which are very rare for in-ear earphones. The earpieces on these actually work like earplugs- completely blocking out external noise, and channeling the music directly into your ear. So the e-series not only produces a full range sound that competes with the quality of standard headphones, it also acts as an isolator for noisy situations- weather that's on the train, the street, dj'ing or on stage. FEATURES Shure designed the E2s to be comfortable for real performance situations, and keeping that in mind, they have outfitted their whole earphone line with a "personal fit kit." This includes three pairs (small, medium, large) each of disposable foam sleeves, standard clear flex sleeves, and soft black flex sleeves. This snug fit helps your ears stay comfortable and contributes to the ultra high isolation factor, meaning you won't be able to hear any outside noise. The sound quality is also boosted since the E2s allow almost no outside interference. The E2s work great with all types of media players, and are particularly useful for ipods and other portable devices. For djing purposes, the E2s are the first bud style headphones that can be used in club situations. The loudness and isolation allow for easy one ear mixing, even in the loudest of conditions. If you want to use these for your iPod, CD Player, or computer headphones that works too, but be careful on the street because you really can't hear anything else. OUR OPINION When comparing the E2s with standard enclosed ear headphones, the only weakness is in the bass tones. Enclosed ear headphones offer a wider and deeper bass range, while the E2s have a greater emphasis on mids and highs (but have better lows than any similar bud-style models). These are certainly a viable option to standard studio monitors and dj headphones, and their price competes with anything at the mid-level headphone range. -the mgmnt

The Tascam TT-M1 allows you to manipulate specific CD players (Vestax's CDX-05 and Tascam's CD line only at this point) using a traditional turntable set-up. The TT-M1 hooks up to your vinyl turntable (it firmly clamps onto the edge), and sends a...   expand review  special signal to your CD player, allowing you to control the track on the CD with traditional turntable movements such as back-cueing and scratching. The TTM-1 works with a roller wheel that can rest on either a record or just the slipmat, and it reacts to your movements with an incredible degree of accuracy. By itself, Vestax's CDX-05 CD turntable is not up to the scratching standards of Pioneer and others, but with the addition of the TT-M1, you get the performance and the hands on experience of the traditional turntable. This is an excellent choice for those who are a little weary of computer based programs like Final Scratch. This setup requires no computer and no special records. If you have the necessary components (cd player and turntable setup), this is a much easier setup. As for the accuracy, the TT-M1 is remarkably precise, as we have witnessed demos with people like Mixmaster Mike going crazy on one of these things without skips or lag.

B-STOCK SPECIAL: This turntable is in brand new, unopened condition. It is simply in a damaged box, so you save. This is an excellent deal. OVERVIEW The Technics 1200 has been the industry standard for 25+ years. The 1200MK5 replaces the 1200M3D, making a...   expand review  couple improvements along the way: 1) the tonearm construction has been improved, which should lead to better skip resistance. 2) the brake adjustment is now more accessible. Simply remove the record and slipmat and it's possible to adjust the platter's breaking time with a screwdriver. Other than that, this is exactly the same as the M3D, which had these differences from the original MK2: 1) power switch is sunken to prevent accidental turn-off 2) includes a button which overrides the pitch control to zero (regular speed) 3) no "click" at zero on the pitch control 4) comes with a high quality Technics 2 piece slipmat 5) Dust cover does not include hinges. FEATURES This is the turntable that first established the type of high torque (motor strength), accurate pitch (speed control), quality tone arm (aids in skip resistance), and superior sound that is required by djs, and after 25+ years it is still the standard by which all other turntables are judged. Every other turntable that has come since has patterned their design off this legendary piece of equipment, and
