The AktiMate Maxi is an active 2-way system negating the need for a separate amplifier as it has its own 60 Watt per channel amplifier built in to one of the speakers. It includes a Reciva media module which brings the wonders of direct access to internet radio together with the ability to stream from any Windows or UPnP shared network on your computer. To access the network you either connect via the Ethernet RJ45 on the rear panel, or wirelessly using the AktiMate Maxi’s internal Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g. There is FM radio as well (with a string antenna supplied), and the Maxi has three auxiliary inputs (2 pairs of RCA phono connections and a mini-jack) plus audio outputs. The USB host socket on the Maxi allows replay of music files from memory sticks or MP3 players. The iPod dock situated on the top of the active speaker has the elegant cover flap recently introduced on the Minis. The enhanced functionality is easy to use thanks to the addition of an illuminated LCD screen on the front of the more powerful active speaker. The menu itself is clear and easy to navigate, either via the remote or the knob on the front panel.

The options are plentiful - Internet Radio, FM Radio, Media Player, Aux 1 (via RCA Phono 1), Aux 2 (RCA Phono 2), Line in (Mini-jack) ... there is even an alarm clock! In addition once registered with Reciva (free) you have access to the vast media library which you configure to your very own My Stuff folder for speed of access. Control is via the remote handset or from the control knob on the front panel of the active speaker. AktiMate Maxis are fully shielded, so placement alongside a monitor presents no problem although the size of these speakers suggest the are better suited to being placed on stands. A voltage selector switch permits a change of voltage should you wish to travel to a part of the world using different mains voltages.

The rear panel jack plug accommodates the connection to an MP3 or MP4 player or your computer via the 3.5 mm input. This is the most affordable way to get a pair of powered speakers (no amp or receiver required) AND a digital interface into your studio.


FEATURES
The M1Active 320 USB's are powered speakers (no amp or receiver required) with a USB 1.1 audio interface built in. They feature two 1/4" inputs, stereo RCA inputs, and 1/8" TRS mini-jack input which allow you to plug in your mixers output, turntables, keyboards, guitars, mics, or CD player into the M1Active and record and play directly into your computer at 16 bit/44.1-48kHz via USB. No special drivers required! The speakers also feature a helpful bass boost feature, switchable power supply, and magnetic shielding for placement near TV or computer monitors. Their lightweight and portable design which makes them very easy take along with you on the road.


OUR OPINION
If you are a dj or producer in the market for desktop monitors and an interface, you can't really beat the M1Active 320 USBs. The price is about as much as desktop monitors alone, but with the inclusion of a digital interface the value is incredible.

The smaller version (M1 Active 320) have been consistent sellers, and now with the 520's you have a louder, more powerful speaker/interface combo. Recommended.

The updated version of Alesis' classic Monitor 1 studio monitors, these are the unpowered models, featuring the same outstanding mix of performance and price point that has made the M1's a home & project studio mainstay for years.

They are capable of a very loud output (200 Watt peak) with almost any amp. The 45Hz bass response is less than its powered brother, but is still impressive, and is tailored for bass-heavy situations. Like the active model, the M1 boasts unparalleled accuracy and the flattest sound for this price range. On a side note, Alesis' design is always a visual compliment to any studio.

Audio Quality
The compact speakers achieve a larger than normal listening area due to the use of a curved waveguide enclosure that directs the soft-dome tweeter’s sound in a wider pattern for better imaging and staging. Unique to Pioneer's DJ speakers, the included control accessory allows users to simultaneously operate the volume, power and four switchable input channels of both speakers. The dial style control knob also engages the equalizer and muting of both speakers.

Inputs and Extras
The S-DJ05 speakers feature four types of inputs (XLR, TRS and two sets of RCA) that let users connect various devices simultaneously, such as a computer, DJ equipment, portable device, etc. The various inputs eliminate the need to change cable connections so the speakers can be utilized with a broad variety of sources.

The speakers also feature an environmentally-friendly Auto Standby feature that automatically detects input signals and switches the standby mode when input is not detected within 60 minutes. For additional functionality, bottom screw holes were implemented for use with commercially available stands.
