MANUFACTURER's REVIEW
The one-piece TMA-1 headband consists of a strong, durable and flexible nylon material, which provides full flexibility when wearing and positioning the headphones during DJing. The two different cushions can be changed easily with the click release function, so the headphones fit all situations â€" from a noisy club environment to just being on the road. The speaker is protected by the cushion plate with integrated filter and provides the richest sound that is available today along with the most durable driver technology. Finally, there is a 3mm cotton fiber filter for isolation and the headphone cup out of a resistant ABS material to protect the fragile parts. The 1.7 meter cable has a mini jack connection in both ends as well as a reinforced plug with a 1/8 adapter option. It has a 0.4 meter coil on the wire, which gives extra length and flexibility at the turntable.

The name TMA-1 (Tycho Magnetic Anomaly-1) is taken from Arthur C. Clarke's science fiction novel "2001: A Space Odyssey" and refers to a black Monolith, which is extremely long-lived and reliable â€" just as the TMA-1.

OUR OPINION
As Akai's answer the Korg's Nano series, the LPD8 holds up very well and actually has a few advantages. While both feature ulra-slim profiles and portability, the LPD8 combines pads AND knobs in one unit (although the knobs are rather short) whereas you would have to buy 2 Nanos (the PAD and KONTROL) to get these features with Korg. It is also slightly shorter than the nanoPAD and features a nice matte finish with rounded corners. Recommended.

OUR OPINION
The LPK25 is a vast improvement on KORG's portable mini-USB keyboard. Whereas the KORG had "key-like' computer keys, the LPK25 actually has real mini-keys that are velocity sensitive. A must for keyboard players and producers who want to work with software need to express with real feeling keys. The added features of arpeggiator and memory make this a steal for under $70. Recommended.

FEATURES
MPK25 combines a 25-key keyboard and 12 genuine MPC pads. The keyboard is semi-weighted and features aftertouch for expressive melodic control. The MPC pads are pressure and velocity-sensitive to capture every nuance of your creative concepts. With Technics prices at an all-time high, the Audio-Technica AT-LP120 USBs offers a secondary, more inexpensive option with features the 1200 does not have. Firstly, you will notice that the AT-LP120s looks very similar to the 1200. Audio-Technica has basically "borrowed" the 1200's popular layout and design. The major difference is that the AT-PL120s' body is mostly constructed of plastic (vs. the metal of the 1200); however the key parts remain metal (platter and tonearm). In addition, the AT-LP120 USBs retain some of the 1200s most popular features including a high-torque direct drive motor and 3-way adjustable tonearm assembly. Having the pre-amp and cartridge included also made setup much easier and the added USB connectivity makes digitizing vinyl a snap.

In addition, all the needed cords (stereo plug, USB input) are built into the speakers with their own coil system.

For its size, the Chill Pill offers loud and clear sound. I plugged in my iPhone and the sound filled a medium sized room. The manufacturer boasts that the quality of the sound is better than standard desktop computer speakers. The Chill Pill also expands to reveal mini-subwoofers for enhanced bass.

The Chill Pill is powered by a rechargeable battery. You can recharge them either by plugging them into your computer's USB port or the power adaptor (sold separately).

Record Cleaner + Cleaning Cloth

This is a true story: Back at Lab II, we had a undersized pit of an office. Uno day, we had a water leak in our ceiling. The crud-filled water soaked our vinyl gems. The water dried and left a thick film of grime that stuck to the vinyl like shepard's pie. We sprayed a little somethin' somethin' of Groovy Cleaner, and no joke this shit made the records sound better than before. Even some noticeable cracks had disappeared. Electric Ladyland never sounded so sweet. Now we swear to this stuff. This bottle paid for itself when it miracle cleaned a bunch of 45s we picked up at the flea market. This bottle will last you a while and it comes with a free lint-free, static-free cloth.

Music Hall's Cork record mat not only improves the sound of your favorite records, it also lowers record wear and improves stylus tracking. How does a slipmat do all this? Music Hall describes it best, "The secret is in the 12 isolation discs surrounding the outside of the mat and the single larger disc for the center label. The discs lift and support the record while floating it above and decoupling it from the platter. This lowers record vibration and reduces acoustic feedback. Stylus tracking is improved and record wear reduced. The mat eliminates the grunge and leaves behind a rich, clear, dynamic sound." In addition, the cork material sucks up unwanted vibrations and is naturally non-static and non-adhesive making it completely safe for all platter types and all records. Cork also grips the record better than the usual felt-type materials so there is less record slippage and fewer timing errors. This thin, lightweight mat is an excellent upgrade for all listening turntable setups (but NOT for DJing or backcueing). Recommended.

Plug Dicer in, slot it on your turntable/CDJ, and you can instantly set cue points and use them to trigger 'Hot Cues'. Or, flip Dicer into 'Auto-Loop' or 'Loop Roll' modes, to trigger loops, or 'roll' sections of the track to create climaxes, drops and glitchy breaks. Each 'mode' illuminates Dicer's pads a different colour, so you can instantly see what mode the pads in, even in dark clubs and venues.

The Numark PT 01 follows the basic principles that brought us the Vestax Handy Trax and improves upon those features in quite a few areas. Like the Vestax, this turntable has many features which older portables lack: play speeds of 33, 45 & 78 rpm, dual RCA outputs, hi/low tone control, pitch control, the ability to run on battery or included power plug, and now USB connectivity. The basics are down solid, and improvements are made in key "aesthetic" areas that make the PT 01 even more convenient. Most importantly, the PT 01 is a more utilitarian shape than the Handy Trax- not quite as sexy, but at 12" in its case, this will fit inside a record crate or bag quite easily. Another nice touch is the fact that the little platter has a slipmat on it. In addition, there are raised felt pads on the player's surface to keep 12" records from getting scratched. The other main improvement is the inclusion of both 3.5mm and 1/8" headphone inputs. A high quality portable and a great value especially with the ability to record to computer via USB (with included software for MAC and PC).

To obtain the best audio reproduction possible, the drivers in the HDJ-1000 headphones were tuned to deliver more impact in the lower bass frequencies of music. Its thick 38 micrometers diaphragm and 1.5 mm voice coil are more efficient in generating the critical midrange and mid-bass frequencies in music and produce a more linear response even at high volume levels.

The Empath Rotary mixer is the latest version of the popular Empath mixer family from Rane. The only difference is the rotary channel faders. All other features are identical.

Rane's answer to the multi-function dilemma. Their goal here was to create a club mixer flexible enough for any type of DJ, in any setting, without taking up a lot of space. After preliminary testing, Rane has achieved all those goals.

1) Keeping to the 10" format, Rane has made the most versatile mixer in this range. If you've used a conventional, wide format club mixer, then you will understand why this is such an advancement.

2) Works with any sound system, club and home, anywhere in the world. A universal, 100 to 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz internal power supply allows using the mixer anywhere in the world without adapters; XLR, TRS or RCA connections eliminates mismatching plugs; and there are even 2 headphone jacks to accommodate 1/8" and 1/4" plugs.

3) Sound. We stand by that Rane's have the best sound. And to ensure this quality Rane has included 2 key features:

Sound quality, Rane construction, multiple features, simplicity of use. This is definitely the easiest, most intuitive 3 channel mixer we've tested. Although we have not tried this in a club system situation, based on Rane's track record, we can conclude that it is top of the line.

Verdict: Minuses
No true weaknesses. Price is high, but reasonable for a full featured club mixer. Battle DJs might find the face to be to cluttered.

OUR OPINION
This is the first mixer we usually recommend to our customers. The main strength of the TTM 56s is the quality of the construction and components. It is very rare that our customers report problems with this mixer, and in the rare case they do, Rane is excellent with warranty service repairs. We've had a 56 at our New York store DJ booth for over 5 years and it still works perfectly (and it gets heavy daily use). Secondly, the functionality is excellent. Rane's non-contact fader is one, if not the best, on the market; and the accelerated slope EQs are powerful and great for mixing. Like the Technics 1200, the Rane TTM 56s is a trusted DJ staple and will last you for years. Highly recommended.

With the TTM-57, Rane has raised the bar for 2 channel mixers once again. The obvious effect is that you no longer need the Serato hub and all its extra wires, but more importantly, you can control the Serato program directly from the mixer with a new set of programmable controls. OUR OPINION
This is the updated MKII version. Main differences between MKI and MKII: small 1/8" and big 1/4" headphone socket, master volume boost when using an external power supply, new adjust knobs for the platter sensitivity, new optional Vestax digital crossfader, and new analog throughput for mic/aux input.

The VCI-300 is quickly becoming the dj standard for all-in-one, controller based DJing. The intuitive mixer-like layout, the touch sensitive JOG wheels, and the Serato Itch software, all combine to give the user an experience that is very similar to djing on a turntable-based Serato setup. We've seen many DJs use the VCI-300, and everything from the djs movements to the music manipulation is very similar. In addition, because of its size, weight (less than 9 lbs.), and all-in-one design (the interface is built-in), the VCI-300 is one of the most portable djing solutions available. Recommended.


MANUFACTURER's REVIEW
Vestax and Serato have joined forces. Sharing their technology and compiled feedback from Pro DJs and users from around the world, they have created a dedicated DJ USB MIDI / Audio system and software offering absolute control.

The VCI-300 is a dedicated USB MIDI controller for the included Serato DJ software. It also comes with a built in audio interface with standard 4in/4out and headphone connection, which means all you need for DJing is the VCI-300, a laptop and a set of headphones.

New features such as the [Emergency Thru Switch] offers an option of using the VCI-300 with the provided ITCH software or without the computer connected if you simply want to play music from your external CD or MP3 player. Another is the new weight reduced JOG wheel and the adjustable JOG wheel torque mechanism to avoid vibration from low frequency feedback. 

HIGH RESOLUTION CONTROL
The VCI-300 can control more than 90 parameters and functions of the included Serato software with high resolution MIDI signals sent via USB. The pulse resolution of the JOG wheel and pitch control fader is 4 times higher than the VCI-100 and provides precise control of each function. The pitch control fader also shares the same high quality fader parts of the input fader for advanced operability.

SUPERB AUDIO CHARACTERISTIC
The built-in audio interface carries a Audio Codec IC with superb audio characteristic, generated by a delta-sigma modulation 24 bit stereo D/A-A/D converter. Audio connection includes 1 stereo input, 1 MIC input and 2 stereo output (Master L/R, Monitor L/R).

LEVEL INDICATION
A 12 level LED L/R indicator is set in the center of the top panel to monitor sound levels.

FILE CONTROL
Audio files in the software library can be easily selected and controlled with the CRATES / FILES / BROWSE key and the cursor switch inherited from the VCM-100.

EMERGENCY THRU SWITCH
The Emergency Thru Switch located on the rear panel is a countermeasure where you can use the VCI-300 with the provided ITCH software or without the computer connected if you simply want to play music from your external CD or MP3 player. The ITCH software reads music from your iTunes library or the Serato library you use for Scratch LIVE, making it the perfect device for recreational or professional DJ's.

ADJUSTABLE JOG WHEEL TORQUE
The torque of each JOG wheel can be adjusted to prevent them from moving from low frequency feedback and altering the pitch when using the VCI-300 in such places like clubs.

FADER CURVE CONTROL
The fader curve of each fader can be adjusted to the preferred characteristics for long mixes, scratching and any other style.

OVERVIEW
The VMC-002XLu is the upgraded version of the popular (and now discontinued) VMC-002XL mixer. This new version gets a sleek black finish and adds a USB port for easy connectivity to your computer. It features a simple, durable 2 channel design, upgradable crossfader, and XLR outputs that get you professional level connectivity at a very inexpensive price.

FEATURES
The VMC-002XLu is your basic entry level, 2 channel mixer, beefed up in terms of sound quality and durability and now the addition of a USB port. The USB port is a great since you can bypass the need for an interface and record vinyl or mixes directly into your computer (recording software needed). It has 2 phono and 2 line inputs (channel 1 and channel 2), plus 1 microphone input with volume control. Each channel has trim adjustment and 3 band EQs that go from completely off (kill) to +6dB. The crossfader is an ALPS fader (upgradeable to the CF-PCV) with a curve control switch on the front panel for "soft" or "sharp" crossfading. It also has a master/cue mix knob so you can practice in the headphones. As mentioned before, one of the main attractions of this mixer is the option for professional XLR outputs, which allow you to send a higher quality signal to any piece of equipment. The VMC-002XL also offers a standard RCA out, which you could use for your "record" out.

OPINION
The VMC-002XL gives you excellent mid-level quality and features at a very economical price. It's an ideal choice for most non-club situations (home and small studio), and with it's three band EQs and XLR outs could even be used in a club if you were in a pinch. It's compact size won't take up too much space, and it has all the necessary features for most dj's (and digital DJs now with the addition of a USB port)0. Scratch DJs will like possibility of upgrading to a PCV crossfader and there really isn't much more you can ask for at this price range.
