MANUFACTURER's REVIEW
The one-piece TMA-1 headband consists of a strong, durable and flexible nylon material, which provides full flexibility when wearing and positioning the headphones during DJing. The two different cushions can be changed easily with the click release function, so the headphones fit all situations - from a noisy club environment to just being on the road. The speaker is protected by the cushion plate with integrated filter and provides the richest sound that is available today along with the most durable driver technology. Finally, there is a 3mm cotton fiber filter for isolation and the headphone cup out of a resistant ABS material to protect the fragile parts. The 1.7 meter cable has a mini jack connection in both ends as well as a reinforced plug with a 1/8 adapter option (and 3 button microphone). It has a 0.4 meter coil on the wire, which gives extra length and flexibility at the turntable.

The name TMA-1 (Tycho Magnetic Anomaly-1) is taken from Arthur C. Clarke's science fiction novel "2001: A Space Odyssey" and refers to a black Monolith, which is extremely long-lived and reliable â€" just as the TMA-1.

M35X Cartridge

Shure's mixing cartridge, specifically designed for house & techno DJs. The M35X builds upon the M35S foundation with improvements in both output and skip resistance. The output has been raised to 6.0mV and Shure lists these as their "most accurate" dj cartridge. According to Shure, it even rivals the Ortofon line in terms of its reproduction for bass, mids and treble. Although not designed specifically for scratching, the 35X also maintains very good skip resistance and record wear ratings. They are meant for dance djs, but will be good for anyone demanding exceptional sound without paying big bucks.

OVERVIEW
Shure's top of the line scratch cartridge (and our recommendation for the best scratch cartridge available), pre-mounted on a Technics headshell. The M447 is the most reliable and skip-resistant cartridge on the market. When set up properly and broken in, it will stick to the groove better than anything else we've encountered. The proof is in the users, and just about every big name is the scratch dj world swears by the M447. That list includes Q Bert, Mixmaster Mike, the X-Ecutioners, ATrak, the Beatjunkies, etc. In addition to the M447's legendary scratch capabilities, it also boasts an very low tracking force, which translates into minimum record wear. The sound output from the M447 tends to be very strong on the bass end, which is good for hip hop djs. At an extremely loud 9.5mV output, this is also one of the loudest cartridges on the market.

VOLTAGE NOTICE
This is the multi-voltage version of Technics 1200M5G, which features a switch for changing between 110V and 220V.


OVERVIEW
The 1210 M5G is subtitled the "grand master" and takes over the top of the line position for Technics' line of turntables. The major improvement here, and the feature which is exclusive to the 1210M5G, is the pitch control. It is now completely digital, which means you should never have the problem of mismatched pitch ranges, and it also gives you the ability to choose between two separate pitch ranges: the standard +/-8 range and the larger +/-16 range. The color scheme, style and finish are also exclusive to the M5G and includes a blue stylus pop-up light, blue lights for both pitch ranges, a unique metallic black finish, and brushed steel hardware for everything down to the 45 adaptor.

Other than that, the M5G includes the same improvements that the MK5 made over the M3D: include 1) the tonearm construction has been improved, which should lead to better skip resistance 2) the brake adjustment is now more accessible. Simply remove the record and slipmat and it's possible to adjust the platter's breaking time with a screwdriver.


OUR OPINION
The Technics 1200 turntable is still our #1 recommendation, in any model number. This "grand master" edition has finally made some serious improvements to the basic 1200 scheme, with the digital pitch control a particularly useful step. Aside from that, the M5G is the most unique 1200 this side of the limited edition gold 1200s and retains all the strengths of previous models. The feel and durability are unmatched. It is the best turntable available, and one that is used in 99% of all venues. Some newer turntables may have more features, but this is the superior overall product, and is the preferred choice for all types of djing. The high torque (motor strength), accurate pitch (speed control), quality tone arm (aids in skip resistance), and superior sound are the standards by which all other turntables are judged. The body and major components are made of steel (whereas most other turntables are made of plastic). The bottom of the body is made of a dense rubber that eliminates distortion and feedback and adds extra weight for stability. Most of the basic parts are readily available and user replaceable. The resale value is also very high.

Since its introduction in 2007, Traktor Scratch has rapidly gained a large user base in the DJ community, especially amongst electronic music DJs. Now in its second phase, Traktor is now considered a DJ standard, on the same recognition level as Serato.

Traktor users like the software's many features including four deck control, the many effects and filters, and the overall quality of the system. With the TTM-57, Rane has raised the bar for 2 channel mixers once again. This mixer is built on the platform of the TTM-56 (already the gold standard for 2 channel mixers), and features the Serato Live interface built-in. The obvious effect is that you no longer need the Serato hub and all its extra wires, but more importantly, you can control the Serato program directly from the mixer with a new set of programmable controls. These controls open up new avenues for live mixing, letting you access songs, loops, and cue points faster and in the rhythm of mix (reducing the need for the laptop keyboard). For under $100, Intro gives you everything you need to create and perform your tracks. Though it isn't as loaded as the full version of Live or Live Suite, the limitations in Intro do not affect the sound or quality of the music you create in Intro. The limitations are very reasonable considering the price (i.e. you're limited to 64 audio tracks, 2 effect sends, 12 Ableton effects at once, etc.). For a full comparison chart click here. This is the updated Groovy Cleaner Kit that now comes with 2 oz. of Groovy Cleaning Fluid, anti-static cloth, microfiber brush, and storage bag. This is a true story: Back at Lab II, we had a undersized pit of an office. Uno day, we had a water leak in our ceiling. The crud-filled water soaked our vinyl gems. HOW IT WORKS
Serato Scratch Live (SSL) works with your traditional dj setup (turntables or cd turntables plus a mixer). Using specially coded vinyl records / CDs, a custom interface box, and the SSL software, you can manipulate music files on your computer, just as if they were recorded onto the vinyl / cd. That means you can mix and scratch your digital files just like you would a record. OUR OPINION
This is the first mixer we usually recommend to our customers. The main strength of the TTM 56s is the quality of the construction and components. It is very rare that our customers report problems with this mixer, and in the rare case they do, Rane is excellent with warranty service repairs. We've had a 56 at our New York store DJ booth for over 5 years and it still works perfectly (and it gets heavy daily use). Secondly, the functionality is excellent. Rane's non-contact fader is one, if not the best, on the market; and the accelerated slope EQs are powerful and great for mixing. OVERVIEW
The Technics 1200MK2 has been the industry standard for 25+ years. For all intents and purposes, this is the exact same turntable as the contemporary MK5 series, just without some of the new features, and the Technics 1200 remains the preferred choice for all types of djing.

FEATURES
This is the turntable that first established the type of high torque (motor strength), accurate pitch (speed control), quality tone arm (aids in skip resistance), and superior sound that is required by djs; and after 25+ years it is still the standard by which all other turntables are judged. Every other turntable that has come since has patterned their design off this legendary piece of equipment, and the reason is simple: the 1200MK2 is about as close to perfection as you can get with a piece of machinery. It functions beautifully and the durability and construction are unmatched. The body and major components are made of steel. The bottom of the body is made of a dense rubber that eliminates distortion and feedback and adds extra weight for stability. Most of the basic parts are readily available and user replaceable.

The differences between the MK2 and the newer MK5 versions are fairly minor and mostly aesthetic. They are as follows: the MK2 still has the "click" at zero on the pitch control, the MK2 does not have a protective sleeve around the on/off knob, and no slipmat is included. Other than that, they are identical.

OUR OPINION
Our #1 recommendation. There is simply no replacement for a Technics 1200 turntable, and it's almost cooler to have this original MK2 model, without the unnecessary "new features" of the newer M3D and MK5 models. Regardless of model number, Technics still makes the best turntable available, and they are used in 99% of all venues. Resale value is also very high. Some newer turntables may have more features, but this is the superior overall product. When you use a 1200, you know you are using the best.

FEATURES
The VMC-002XLu is your basic entry level, 2 channel mixer, beefed up in terms of sound quality and durability and now the addition of a USB port. The USB port is a great since you can bypass the need for an interface and record vinyl or mixes directly into your computer (recording software needed). It has 2 phono and 2 line inputs (channel 1 and channel 2), plus 1 microphone input with volume control. Each channel has trim adjustment and 3 band EQs that go from completely off (kill) to +6dB. The crossfader is an ALPS fader (upgradeable to the CF-PCV) with a curve control switch on the front panel for "soft" or "sharp" crossfading. It also has a master/cue mix knob so you can practice in the headphones. As mentioned before, one of the main attractions of this mixer is the option for professional XLR outputs, which allow you to send a higher quality signal to any piece of equipment. The VMC-002XL also offers a standard RCA out, which you could use for your "record" out.

OPINION
The VMC-002XL gives you excellent mid-level quality and features at a very economical price. It's an ideal choice for most non-club situations (home and small studio), and with it's three band EQs and XLR outs could even be used in a club if you were in a pinch. It's compact size won't take up too much space, and it has all the necessary features for most dj's (and digital DJs now with the addition of a USB port)0. Scratch DJs will like possibility of upgrading to a PCV crossfader and there really isn't much more you can ask for at this price range.

The one-piece TMA-1 headband consists of a strong, durable and flexible nylon material, which provides full flexibility when wearing and positioning the headphones during DJing. FEATURES
The first thing that must be highlighted is the design of this mixer. Alesis has always been known for their eye pleasing design, but here they've surpassed expectations by delivering rugged construction and an extremely compact, portable size now in sleek black.

With the USB connection, comes two big bonus features. The Multimix USB8 doubles as both a input mixer and an audio interface, that's one less piece of hardware to buy. Record audio into this unit, directly into your computer. In addition Alesis has included an excellent production program in Cubase LE to get you started.

In addition to the 8 channels and USB connectivity, the MultiMix features (4) high-gain mic inputs with phantom power. There are balanced 1/4" inputs, 1/4" outputs, 1/4" monitor output, and headphone out.

There are 100 28-bit easily accessible effects including reverbs, delays, chorus, flanging, and pitch. Each channel features a 3-band EQ. Steinberg Cubase LE (the limited version of Cubase) is also included.

OUR OPINION
If you are not shopping for an expensive professional mixer like those made by Mackie, we highly recommend the Multimix USB8 2.0. It's very rugged and portable, and offers some unbelievable features at this price range (USB audio interface and effects). The USB 2,0 connectivity is especially crucial because once you utilize the excellent, clean sound of this mixer, you can transfer it digitally to your computer while keeping sound quality intact at high speeds. This is a great mixer for portable or home usage.

This works well for cleaning all of your electrical connections and adapters. For DJ equipment maintenance, the deoxit pen works with all the important connections: rca's, fader wire connections, and especially (and the main reason we got this) for tonearm-headshell connections.

Not getting sound out of one channel? We don't guarnatee this will fix it, but in most cases of build-up it will. Licking the connections on your headshell/cartridge is a good quick fix, but it actually leads to more build-up. If you ever tried to clean the inside the tone-arm prongs with a toothpick, you know why this is a blessing. The tip works just like a chisel point marker and fits effectively into the tonearm socket for easy cleaning.

Record Cleaner + Cleaning Cloth

This is a true story: Back at Lab II, we had a undersized pit of an office. Uno day, we had a water leak in our ceiling. The crud-filled water soaked our vinyl gems. The water dried and left a thick film of grime that stuck to the vinyl like shepard's pie. We sprayed a little somethin' somethin' of Groovy Cleaner, and no joke this shit made the records sound better than before. Even some noticeable cracks had disappeared. Electric Ladyland never sounded so sweet. Now we swear to this stuff. This bottle paid for itself when it miracle cleaned a bunch of 45s we picked up at the flea market. OVERVIEW
Korg has shaken up the synthesizer market with this amazingly priced, multi-function production tool. The microKorg is both a multi-timbral virtual analog synthesizer and a 4 voice vocoder in one very affordable, portable package.

The synth portion can be used to design analog drums, deep bass, atmospheric keys, weird sound effects and everything in between. It is designed like an analog synthesizer for easy manipulation of the sound, and quick access to the controls.

The vocoder produces a vocal effect that has been used with great results by everyone from Stevie Wonder and Roger Troutman to Dr. Dre and Daft Punk. The same knobs control the vocoder, again giving you quick access and easy manipulation of the sound.

FEATURES
The Synthesizer: The microKorg comes with 128 preset sound sources that can be tweaked infinitely, by patching different effects into the mix. 2 oscillators, plus a noise generator produce the sound on the synth.

The Vocoder: The microKorg comes with a mic, but if you prefer, there are 2-1/4" inputs on the rear to plug in your own microphone or other sound source (drums, keys, etc.). The sound is then grouped with an oscillator, a noise generator and 8 channels of Vocoder to get the desired effect.

Effects: 6 types of arpeggiator are included to extend your sounds. Other effects include the standard filter cut-off and resonance controls, attack and release, and a tempo control as well as LFO's, modulation, delays, EQ and a lot more.

General: The back panel has MIDI in, out and thru, 2 lines of audio in, L/Mono, R and headphone outputs. The keyboard is made up of 37 mini-size keys, with an octave shift control.

OUR OPINION
I have heard and seen (in photos) that the microKorg is the Neptunes secret little weapon. The Vocoder section is extremely helpful in today's electronic based music mediums, especially if you're working with a bad singer. It is easy to use and even easier to manipulate a voice through. Try putting drums or a loop through it, and get something completely different. The Synthesizer section is a bit more complicated. It will take a good bit of reading and playing around to fully understand how your actions are affecting the sounds that are coming out. But the analog style controls let you tweak the sounds easily and hear an immediate difference.

Overall it may take a while to get the full grasp of how the microKorg works. However, once you have a basic understanding, it is an extremely powerful machine with infinite sound synthesis possibilities. On top of that throw in the vocoder, and this becomes one of the best values in the market.

Mini-KP Kaoss Pad

The Mini-KP takes the best features of the popular Kaoss Pad and places them in an extremely portable pocket-sized body. 100 effects are available at your fingertips (realtime) including filter, delay, and looper as well as numerous BPM effects that utilize the "TAP/BPM" button to synchronize to your song's tempo. There is also an "FX release" function that offers a natural decay of the effect when changing effects and memory, and memory capabilities. All this in a battery powered unit that is an ideal choice for practice at home, in the studio, or performance in the club.

FEATURES
Just like it's big brother the KP3, the main feature of the Mini-KP is its
touch-sensitive control surface. Simply touch the surface and you activate the effect; drag your finger and it changes the parameters of your effect. Move it up and down to control one parameter, left and right for another, or even diagonal to control 2 parameters simultaneously. It's so easy to use that you really don't need to know what you're doing at all, and you will be able to master some cool sounds in about 10 seconds. Everything is done in realtime too, so you will here the effect instantaneously.

The Mini-KP features a total of 100 effects, many derived from the larger KP3, including filter, delay, and a looper. But especially effective for creative mixing is the "low/high-band pass filter" that lets you cut specific frequency ranges of sound (cut the bass out or the highs), the "decimator" that intentionally degrades the audio quality of the input to give unique impact to the sound, a much-requested "delay & reverb" combination effect (for that smooth echoed out mix effect), and the "looper & pitch shifter" that captures and repeats incoming audio, retuning it in real-time as the pad is manipulated. In addition, there are some synth sounds derived from the KP3 and many more effects that can dramatically add to your sound.

Another important feature is the built-in BPM engine. You can use the "TAP/BPM button" to detect the BPM and synchronize the Mini-KP to an audio input source, and then take advantage of the many BPM effects that are synchronized to your song or performance. There's also an "FX RELEASE" function that lets the effect sound decay gradually when you remove your finger from the pad or change effects. This makes it easy for smooth and natural sounding blending of the mini-KP's effects into your performance or mix.

Lastly is the "Hold" function that lets you fix the effect settings at a given moment, and indispensable memory keys that allow you to save your favorite settings. If you're touching the pad to apply an effect, you can use the "Hold" function to "freeze" the effect settings at any desired point. The Memory Key function lets you memorize the selected effect program, the Hold function's on/off status, and the effect depth. This lets you store your favorite effect settings for instant recall anytime.

OUR OPINION
Just like it's bigger brothers, the Mini-KP is an excellent effects unit for live DJ sets with its ease of use, hands-on control and countless effects options. With it's small size and battery operation, you can feel confident bringing it anywhere - from the home studio to the club. In addition, the Mini-KP is excellent for BPMing your records, and adding effects to your mixes. For music production, the Mini-KP offers a inexpensive way to further alter your sounds with quality Korg effects. The Mini-KP is a quality effects unit that is extremely flexibile and extremely portable.

OUR OPINION
Rokit's are some the best selling monitors in the country, and for good reason. The combination of performance and price point make these a welcome addition to the studio. These 5 models are the smallest of the buch and would work well in any bedroom setup or small studio room. Recommended.

Numark's M1USB is the redesigned model that has replaced the popular DM950USB. This compact, two-channel mixer with USB audio I/O is perfect for DJ's on a budget who need to mix different sources, integrate computer audio, and record sets straight to computer.

FEATURES
The M1USB mixer features two phono (RCA), two line (RCA), and one mic (1/4") input and master (RCA) and headphone (1/4" stereo) outputs. Two channels are available for mixing, each with rotary 2 band EQ and gain.
