Authentic Wooden LP Picture Frame

These are actual antique wooden record frames. The wood has aged beautifully giving the frame a rich golden brown color. There is no glass on these frames, which in my opinion, is a superior way to display your favorite records. In addition, the frame features a slot opening on top, which allows you to switch out your records effortlessly. These are also super-easy to hang, just use a push-pin on the wall and the frame will naturally hang on it without any additional hardware. Simple, good-looking, affordable (cheaper than the metal ones), what more could you want? Recommended.

This is a true story: Back at Lab II, we had a undersized pit of an office. Uno day, we had a water leak in our ceiling. The crud-filled water soaked our vinyl gems. The water dried and left a thick film of grime that stuck to the vinyl like shepard's pie. We sprayed a little somethin' somethin' of Groovy Cleaner, and no joke this shit made the records sound better than before. Even some noticeable cracks had disappeared. Electric Ladyland never sounded so sweet. Now we swear to this stuff. This bottle paid for itself when it miracle cleaned a bunch of 45s we picked up at the flea market. This is the legit synthetic solution used for moving surfaces and mechanims (faders, switches etc.). This 100% concentration droplet solution is recommended for re-lubrication after a full cleaning (which can be done with the Caig 5% spray or a light alcohol solution). These droplets give a smoother slide than the popular gun oil droplets and creates a bonding layer of wear-reducing, heat-resistant lubricant. To put it simply put this shit on your faders after you clean it and your faders will be smoother than when you first opened it.

The SL 3 is the long awaited, upgraded version of the popular SL 1 Serato interface. This new version boasts much improved audio quality thanks to 24-bit audio processing, better dynamic range, USB 2.0 connectivity, and auxiliary inputs/outputs all in a light, compact unit.

FEATURES
Like the world standard SL 1, the SL 3 connects one or two standard vinyl or CD turntables to your computer and the mixer of your choice. Using regular turntables or CD players, you can scratch and mix files from your Mac or Windows computer's CD or hard drive with the control records or CDs.

OVERVIEW:
With the TTM-57, Rane has raised the bar for 2 channel mixers once again. This mixer is built on the platform of their TTM-56 (already the gold standard for 2 channel mixers), and features the Serato Live program built-in. The immediate effect is that you no longer need the Serato hub, but you can also control the Serato program directly from the mixer and they've included tons of new features as well.

FEATURES
Obviously, the main draw here is having an all-in-one digital/analog mixing system. The TTM-57 not only comes with the Serato software for your computer, but it also features the Serato interface built right into the mixer. So all you need to do is plug the TTM-57 directly into your computer without the hassle of an external hub + wires. The TTM-57 also features on board controls for the Serato program which basically allow you to control everything within the software from your mixer, so you'll barely need to touch the computer. In a new move, the TTM-57 has on board effects (filter and delay) with six possible insert points, assignable to pre- or post-channel faders for both programs. It also features recording capability (record your mix directly onto your laptop), and many more useful tweaks to the Serato / TTM-56 systems. Full features will be explored once this mixer is in stock.

OUR OPINION
This is an extremely impressive mixer, and another great step in the Rane line. The TTM-56 was already our favorite 2 channel mixer, and Serato the preferred digital dj'ing solution for most djs, so the combination of the two is nothing short of revolutionary. As with all Rane products, you can be ensured of the highest quality across the board- durability, parts, sound quality, user friendliness, customer service and everything else. Highly recommended.

The new top of the line from Technics raises the bar for durable, comfortable and quality sounding headphones. The RP-DH1200 has also been designed to match the look of their SL-DZ1200 cd turntable with a clean, polished design and Technics' signature strobe dots around the earpieces. In addition to the new look, they have made some major functional and structural improvements to their previous DJ headphones. These include larger 50mm drivers, a higher power input capacity (3500mW), and perhaps most importantly- a one-sided detachable cord, which eliminates a major source of headphone breakage. The joints between the earpieces and the headband, another area where dj headphones are commonly broken, have also been significantly reinforced; so these should be Technics most durable headphones yet. Everything about the construction is robust- thick padded headband, large cushioned earpieces, they weigh almost 5 pounds- providing both comfort and the ability to block outside noise. High recommendation for djing and studio use. Comes with a leather carrying pouch.

OVERVIEW
The importance of having a quality portable turntable is obvious for anyone who has ever seriously looked for or collected records. It's the key element for record buying trips (especially at flea markets and that record warehouse in the sky); plus it's the missing piece of equipment that frees your records to go wherever you want. Listen before you buy, and play them anywhere -what could be better? For years, collectors have been hoarding children's portables and hard to find Japanese models; now Vestax has finally made a high grade portable available to the general public.

OUR OPINION
The Handy Trax is a well thought-out machine, designed with input from collectors and djs. As a result, it is easy to use, surprisingly durable, and has a host of sensible features. For most, the top feature will be the powerful, full sounding stereo headphone output. It's plenty loud enough and sound quality will not have you second guessing what the record "really sounds like." Headphones get an A+. You can also plug the Handy Trax into your receiver or stereo system with its standard RCA outs, so it's possible to double as a home unit. Listening on the built-in speaker is definitely a last resort, but even that is good enough to fill up a small space like a bedroom. Other functions include a strong pitch control knob and effective tone control (just low/high, but it's enough to remove scratchy hiss). The Handy Trax also features a 3.5mm input which allows you to play another source through the turntable's speaker. It is powered either by an included, detachable power plug or six "D" batteries.

The Handy Trax gets the job done and it comes with just about every feature that djs and collectors have asked for. If you need to justify such a luxury purchase, just think of the number of bad records you won't buy with this thing in your possession. It'll pay for itself in no time and make your collection better while you're at it. And aside from the obvious, the possibilities are endless- this gives you bedside listening flexibility, stoopside action in the warm weather and trips to the park. For now, it's as close to an ipod as the record world is going to get.

If you are a dj or producer in the market for desktop monitors and an interface, you can't really beat the M1Active 320 USBs. The price is about as much as desktop monitors alone, but with the inclusion of a digital interface the value is incredible.

OVERVIEW
The Technics 1200 has been the industry standard for 25+ years. The 1200MK5 replaces the 1200M3D, making a couple improvements along the way: 1) the tonearm construction has been improved, which should lead to better skip resistance. 2) the brake adjustment is now more accessible. Simply remove the record and slipmat and it's possible to adjust the platter's breaking time with a screwdriver. Other than that, this is exactly the same as the M3D, which had these differences from the original MK2: 1) power switch is sunken to prevent accidental turn-off 2) includes a button which overrides the pitch control to zero (regular speed) 3) no "click" at zero on the pitch control 4) comes with a high quality Technics 2 piece slipmat 5) Dust cover does not include hinges.


FEATURES
This is the turntable that first established the type of high torque (motor strength), accurate pitch (speed control), quality tone arm (aids in skip resistance), and superior sound that is required by djs, and after 25+ years it is still the standard by which all other turntables are judged. Every other turntable that has come since has patterned their design off this legendary piece of equipment, and the reason is simple: the 1200 is about as close to perfection as you can get with a piece of machinery. It functions beautifully and the durability and construction are unmatched. The body and major components are made of steel. The bottom of the body is made of a dense rubber that eliminates distortion and feedback and adds extra weight for stability. Most of the basic parts are readily available and user replaceable.


OUR OPINION
Our #1 recommendation. There is simply no replacement for a Technics 1200 turntable. Regardless of model number, Technics still makes the best turntable available, and they are used in 99% of all venues. Resale value is also very high. Some newer turntables may have more features, but this is the superior overall product. When you use a 1200, you know you are using the best.

We've been trying to get this in to the shop for awhile now, but they're hard to come by (sold only in Japan). Luckily our Japanese connect came through with a batch! The Audio Technica AT-618 is a rare accessory for DJ's that demand top quality sound and performance from their records. This is the updated Groovy Cleaner Kit that now comes with 2 oz. of Groovy Cleaning Fluid, anti-static cloth, microfiber brush, and storage bag. This is a true story: Back at Lab II, we had a undersized pit of an office. Uno day, we had a water leak in our ceiling. The crud-filled water soaked our vinyl gems. The water dried and left a thick film of grime that stuck to the vinyl like shepard's pie. We sprayed a little somethin' somethin' of Groovy Cleaner, and no joke this shit made the records sound better than before. Even some noticeable cracks had disappeared. There is also an "FX release" function that offers a natural decay of the effect when changing effects and memory, and memory capabilities. All this in a battery powered unit that is an ideal choice for practice at home, in the studio, or performance in the club.

FEATURES
Just like it's big brother the KP3, the main feature of the Mini-KP is its
touch-sensitive control surface. Simply touch the surface and you activate the effect; drag your finger and it changes the parameters of your effect. Move it up and down to control one parameter, left and right for another, or even diagonal to control 2 parameters simultaneously. It's so easy to use that you really don't need to know what you're doing at all, and you will be able to master some cool sounds in about 10 seconds. Everything is done in realtime too, so you will here the effect instantaneously.

The Mini-KP features a total of 100 effects, many derived from the larger KP3, including filter, delay, and a looper. But especially effective for creative mixing is the "low/high-band pass filter" that lets you cut specific frequency ranges of sound (cut the bass out or the highs), the "decimator" that intentionally degrades the audio quality of the input to give unique impact to the sound, a much-requested "delay & reverb" combination effect (for that smooth echoed out mix effect), and the "looper & pitch shifter" that captures and repeats incoming audio, retuning it in real-time as the pad is manipulated. In addition, there are some synth sounds derived from the KP3 and many more effects that can dramatically add to your sound.

Another important feature is the built-in BPM engine. You can use the "TAP/BPM button" to detect the BPM and synchronize the Mini-KP to an audio input source, and then take advantage of the many BPM effects that are synchronized to your song or performance. There's also an "FX RELEASE" function that lets the effect sound decay gradually when you remove your finger from the pad or change effects. This makes it easy for smooth and natural sounding blending of the mini-KP's effects into your performance or mix.

Lastly is the "Hold" function that lets you fix the effect settings at a given moment, and indispensable memory keys that allow you to save your favorite settings. If you're touching the pad to apply an effect, you can use the "Hold" function to "freeze" the effect settings at any desired point. The Memory Key function lets you memorize the selected effect program, the Hold function's on/off status, and the effect depth. This lets you store your favorite effect settings for instant recall anytime.

OUR OPINION
Just like it's bigger brothers, the Mini-KP is an excellent effects unit for live DJ sets with its ease of use, hands-on control and countless effects options. With it's small size and battery operation, you can feel confident bringing it anywhere - from the home studio to the club. In addition, the Mini-KP is excellent for BPMing your records, and adding effects to your mixes. For music production, the Mini-KP offers a inexpensive way to further alter your sounds with quality Korg effects. The Mini-KP is a quality effects unit that is extremely flexibile and extremely portable.

Serato Scratch is a digital djing system that works in a very similar manner to Final Scratch. MDR-V6 Studio Headphones

This mid-priced headphone from Sony is something of a legend. Initially introduced in the early 80s, it became the standard among studio heads and educated consumers alike for its excellent sound reproduction and strong build. Look up some reviews on the internet and you'll find that people literally swear by them. According to the specs, these aren't much different than similar current models, but fans claim they have a certain chemistry that makes sound that much better. Turn V6's all the way up and you will still have clear (but not tinny) highs, solid mids and an undistorted bass. The construction is also notable, with sturdy metal fasteners and a handsome leather headband. The cord is single sided and coiled. The MDR-V6 come with a leather carrying pouch and a silver 1/4" adaptor.

OVERVIEW
The 1210 M5G is subtitled the "grand master" and takes over the top of the line position for Technics' line of turntables. The major improvement here, and the feature which is exclusive to the 1210M5G, is the pitch control. It is now completely digital, which means you should never have the problem of mismatched pitch ranges, and it also gives you the ability to choose between two separate pitch ranges: the standard +/-8 range and the larger +/-16 range. The color scheme, style and finish are also exclusive to the M5G and includes a blue stylus pop-up light, blue lights for both pitch ranges, a unique metallic black finish, and brushed steel hardware for everything down to the 45 adaptor.

Other than that, the M5G includes the same improvements that the MK5 made over the M3D: include 1) the tonearm construction has been improved, which should lead to better skip resistance 2) the brake adjustment is now more accessible. Simply remove the record and slipmat and it's possible to adjust the platter's breaking time with a screwdriver.

OUR OPINION
The Technics 1200 turntable is still our #1 recommendation, in any model number. This "grand master" edition has finally made some serious improvements to the basic 1200 scheme, with the digital pitch control a particularly useful step. Aside from that, the M5G is the most unique 1200 this side of the limited edition gold 1200s and retains all the strengths of previous models. The feel and durability are unmatched. It is the best turntable available, and one that is used in 99% of all venues. Some newer turntables may have more features, but this is the superior overall product, and is the preferred choice for all types of djing. The high torque (motor strength), accurate pitch (speed control), quality tone arm (aids in skip resistance), and superior sound are the standards by which all other turntables are judged. The body and major components are made of steel (whereas most other turntables are made of plastic). The bottom of the body is made of a dense rubber that eliminates distortion and feedback and adds extra weight for stability. Most of the basic parts are readily available and user replaceable. The resale value is also very high.

Though it isn't as loaded as the full version of Live or Live Suite, the limitations in Intro do not affect the sound or quality of the music you create in Intro. The limitations are very reasonable considering the price (i.e. you're limited to 64 audio tracks, 2 effect sends, 12 Ableton effects at once, etc.). For a full comparison chart click here. Even with the limitations, this is still an incredible value for the price and an excellent way to get into producing with Live. Recommended.

Alesis has redesigned their famous M1 series of monitors, and introduced the 520 and 620 versions, featuring the same outstanding mix of performance and price point that has made the M1s a home & project studio mainstay for years.

There is also a new "acoustic space" switch which allows you to tailor the sound to the size of your control room. OUR OPINION
If you are not shopping for an expensive professional mixer like those made by Mackie, we highly recommend the Multimix USB8 2.0. It's very rugged and portable, and offers some unbelievable features at this price range (USB audio interface and effects). The USB 2,0 connectivity is especially crucial because once you utilize the excellent, clean sound of this mixer, you can transfer it digitally to your computer while keeping sound quality intact at high speeds. This is a great mixer for portable or home usage.

This works well for cleaning all of your electrical connections and adapters. For DJ equipment maintenance, the deoxit pen works with all the important connections: rca's, fader wire connections, and especially (and the main reason we got this) for tonearm-headshell connections.

Not getting sound out of one channel? We don't guarnatee this will fix it, but in most cases of build-up it will. Licking the connections on your headshell/cartridge is a good quick fix, but it actually leads to more build-up. If you ever tried to clean the inside the tone-arm prongs with a toothpick, you know why this is a blessing. The tip works just like a chisel point marker and fits effectively into the tonearm socket for easy cleaning.

The top of the line record cleaner, the only thing better than this is using one of those $800 machines. The kit comes with 2 cleaning pads and a specially formulated spray cleaner. When used properly, the process cleans your records efficiently, removes static (you may also need to de-static your slipmats which can be done with de-static spray made for clothes) and improves the sound quality on any record. Gruv Glide even claims that with proper application, it will also improve tracking, which makes your records and your stylii last longer. OVERVIEW
Korg has shaken up the synthesizer market with this amazingly priced, multi-function production tool. The microKorg is both a multi-timbral virtual analog synthesizer and a 4 voice vocoder in one very affordable, portable package.

The synth portion can be used to design analog drums, deep bass, atmospheric keys, weird sound effects and everything in between. It is designed like an analog synthesizer for easy manipulation of the sound, and quick access to the controls.

The vocoder produces a vocal effect that has been used with great results by everyone from Stevie Wonder and Roger Troutman to Dr. Dre and Daft Punk. The same knobs control the vocoder, again giving you quick access and easy manipulation of the sound.

FEATURES
The Synthesizer: The microKorg comes with 128 preset sound sources that can be tweaked infinitely, by patching different effects into the mix. 2 oscillators, plus a noise generator produce the sound on the synth.

The Vocoder: The microKorg comes with a mic, but if you prefer, there are 2-1/4" inputs on the rear to plug in your own microphone or other sound source (drums, keys, etc.). The sound is then grouped with an oscillator, a noise generator and 8 channels of Vocoder to get the desired effect.

Effects: 6 types of arpeggiator are included to extend your sounds. Other effects include the standard filter cut-off and resonance controls, attack and release, and a tempo control as well as LFO's, modulation, delays, EQ and a lot more.

General: The back panel has MIDI in, out and thru, 2 lines of audio in, L/Mono, R and headphone outputs. The keyboard is made up of 37 mini-size keys, with an octave shift control.

OUR OPINION
I have heard and seen (in photos) that the microKorg is the Neptunes secret little weapon. The Vocoder section is extremely helpful in today's electronic based music mediums, especially if you're working with a bad singer. It is easy to use and even easier to manipulate a voice through. Try putting drums or a loop through it, and get something completely different. The Synthesizer section is a bit more complicated. It will take a good bit of reading and playing around to fully understand how your actions are affecting the sounds that are coming out. But the analog style controls let you tweak the sounds easily and hear an immediate difference.

Overall it may take a while to get the full grasp of how the microKorg works. However, once you have a basic understanding, it is an extremely powerful machine with infinite sound synthesis possibilities. On top of that throw in the vocoder, and this becomes one of the best values in the market.

If you're looking for an extremely portable USB-MIDI keyboard at an affordable price, look no further. You cannot get much smaller than the nanoKey, and despite its small size, it has features that can hang with much bulkier and higher priced models. The only negative would be if you are accustomed to full size weighted keys.

These are the G2 models and feature the things the Rokit's are famous for (front-firing bass port, soft-domed tweeter, glass aramid composite yellow cone) but with refined voicing and a new curved baffle that reduces diffraction and provides even better monitoring accuracy in small or large studios.

FEATURES
This is the Rokit 5 model and features a 5" glass aramiad composite woofer, an adjustable gain range of +6dB to -30dB, a recessed 1" neodymuim soft dome tweeter with wave guide, high frequency control to adjust for specific room accoustics, radically engineered curved surfaces for a wider "sweet spot," clean and accurate bass performance from front firing ports, and custom drivers in a bi-amplified that provides discrete low-distortion power for each driver. Both RCA and 1/4" (balanced/unbalanced) inputs are available in the rear of the units.

OUR OPINION
Rokit's are some the best selling monitors in the country, and for good reason. The combination of performance and price point make these a welcome addition to the studio. These 5 models are the smallest of the buch and would work well in any bedroom setup or small studio room. Recommended.

OUR OPINION
The MicroTrack is small, easy to use, and most importantly, it seamlessly integrates with your computer. Record your DJ set, save it as an MP3, and publish it on your website; or record a live vocal or sample, save it as a WAV, and use it in your production. And with the version II updates, M-Audio just made a good thing even better. Recommended.

Elektro Concorde Cartridge

OVERVIEW
Ortofon's Elektro cartridge is a well-rounded cartridge yet suitable to all types of DJing. The basic concept behind the Elektro is a combination of their Night Club and Scratch cartridges. The Night Club is Ortofon's best sounding cartridge and the Scratch has the best tracking ability for scratching. The Elektro combines the best features from both, with major improvements in the output (the Elektro is at 7.5mV) and construction. The Elektro also has a new level of durability, with a new rubber suspension designed to minimize the effects of rough handling (dropping the needle on the strobes, touching the stylus with your fingers, etc). Many of the DJs who work for us have switched to the Elektro, with the results backing up all of Ortofon's claims. With the introduction of the Ortofon's new Qbert cartridge, the Elektro's have slipped down in the heirarchy of Ortofon cartridges, but these are still an outstanding choice for DJs who require top sound quality and good skip resistance, and come in quite a deal cheaper than the Qberts.

CDJ-1000MK3 CD Turntable

OVERVIEW
The upgrade to Pioneer's industry leading cd turntable. Pioneer has always led the way when it comes to cd turntables, introducing the first cd player that could truly emulate vinyl control with the CDJ-1000 and keeping it up to date with many improvements over the years. This latest model builds on the successful platform by tweaking the features and improving the layout and functions.

FEATURES
There are a few major differences between the CDJ-1000MK3 and the older MK2 (which has now been discontinued). These include:
- mp3 support
- adjustable resistance on the jog wheel
- improved jog wheel display
- improved main display to accommodate WAVE data
- "resume play" function
- new hot loop function
- capable of using both SD and MMC memory cards

The most important improvement is the ability to play mp3's. While the CDJ-1000MK3 doesn't offer a USB connection or any other way to hook up to your computer, it is now capable of playing all mp3 files burned onto CDs. The jog wheel itself is now adjustable, letting you change the resistance all the way from the loose feel of a CDJ-800 up to the stiffer feel of a first generation CDJ-1000. Another major improvement is with the unit's display features. On the jog wheel, the cue and angle markers have been enlarged for easier use, and they have doubled the resolution of the main display area. This allows you to see all the track info, as well as accommodate WAVE data and easily search through folders on mp3 discs. The "resume play" function starts the disc at the exact time the cd is ejected, which is especially useful for mistakenly ejected cds. The hot loop function stores up to three loops per track, working the same way as the "hot cue" function. MMC memory card capability allows you to store up to 10 cue points on 10,000 cds with an MMC card.

Aside from the improvements mentioned above, the CDJ-1000MK3 remains relatively unchanged from the successful CDJ-1000MK2. It features all the details that you need to successfully dj with cds, including perfect scratch performance, an excellent cue point system, auto beat loop functions and more. OUR OPIONION
Pioneer has been the go-to cd turntable manufacturer since they first introduced the CDJ-1000 in 2002 and it has remained on top by constantly improving their gear and listening to the requests of their customers. Their players are extremely easy to use, function more or less perfectly, and have great display functions (extremely important when dj'ing on cd players). While they haven't made any drastic improvements with the CDJ-1000MK3, this remains the most reliable cd turntable on the market. The new features have optimized the 1000's performance, made it even more user friendly and prepared it for the switch from djs using actual cds to djs using mp3s compiled on cd. Pioneer CDJ's are the most widely used cd turntables from clubs to studios to bedrooms, and since the memory cards will be recognized by any CDJ-1000, you can just bring your discs and your memory card to any club and you will be ready to play. The CDJ-1000MK3 remains the top of the line when it comes to cd turntables.

DJM-400 Mixer

OVERVIEW
With the DJM-400, Pioneer has finally made a mid-range mixer that incorporates some of their famous on-board effects, in-demand features and the general style of the popular DJM-600 and 500 mixers. The DJM-400 is like a streamlined DJM-600 with two channels, but it also has quite a few unique features including Pioneer's new in-loop sampler, kills on the 3 band equalizer and a completely digital 24bit/96Khz mixing bus.

FEATURES
In terms of basic mixer functions, the DJM-400 is geared towards mix DJs and is set up in standard fashion. There are 2 phono/line RCA inputs, 2 CD RCA inputs with fader start connection, 2 master RCA outputs, and 2 ¼" mic inputs. The crossfader feels similar to the one used in the DJM-500 and DJM-600, but it has been improved for both scratching and durability. The crossfader curve is adjustable with a three position switch, and while it doesn't feature the razor sharp cut that scratch djs demand these days, you can definitely scratch with it and the curve is much sharper than the 600 or 500. In comparison to previous Pioneer mixers, the eq's have been pumped up considerably and now offer a full kill on all three bands (the trim also goes down to kill). The 2 mic channels each have separate level controls with a mic master eq (lo/hi) and an on/off/talkover switch (talkover is activated when you speak into the mic, then all other sound is taken down 20db). The headphone cueing offers all the necessary options for monitoring: both channels and the master output can either be heard on their own, or in any combination (ie: when both channel 1 and master are on, you hear channel 1 in the left headphone and the master in the right).

The digital 24bit/96Khz mixing bus is the platform that sets the DJM-400 apart from other mixers in this price range. Not only does it process the sound cleanly and provide an excellent signal for users of digital equipment like Serato and Final Scratch, it also gives the DJM-400 enough power to do all the "intelligent" things like count BPMs, auto synch effects on-beat, run the sampler and more. The effects are the classic set of Delay, Echo, Flanger, Filter, and Phaser plus a couple new ones- Robot and Roll. They are assignable to channel 1, channel 2, mic, or master and are controlled with a depth knob, beat variables (1/1, 2/1, 4/1, etc) and 2 pitch control buttons (+/-). The effects are automatically synched up with your music when you engage the BPM counter.

The sampler is something we haven't seen before. Pioneer calls it the "in-loop sampler" and it allows you to automatically loop up 4 beats of a song for on the fly remixes and mashups. In other words, you can set it to record on a drum break or whatever you want, the sampler cleanly grabs 4 beats (note: beats, not bars), then loops them up and stores them in the bank buttons. The time is not variable- it will grab 4 beats whether the song in question is 150bpm or 30bpm- but through messing with your sample points and using the tap-in bpm counter you can actually get pretty creative and do more with it than you'd think. You can also use it to record beatless samples, noises, and acapellas but the playback will still be looped. Playback functions the same way as the effects: you can assign your sample/loop to any channel (ch.1, ch. 2, mic, or main) and control the tempo through the pitch buttons and the volume through the depth knob. There are 5 different banks to store loops, with a total of up to 12 seconds sampling time.

OUR OPINION
There's no question that the Pioneer DJM-400 offers an awful lot in a relatively small and inexpensive package. The sound quality will be great across the board, even the loops are run through the 24bit/96Khz mixing bus so there is no loss of quality or noticeable downgrade from the source. The effects are always fun, and with the right touch they can make your set that much better. And the in-loop sampler is something we could see being a really useful tool for many DJs. It's unfortunate that Pioneer didn't take it a step further and include the great crossfader that was used in their DJM-707 and 909 mixers, but for anybody who isn't heavily into scratching, this mixer offers plenty room to maneuver and quite a lot to play with. It also comes at a price point that will get you into the big boy club mixer world without having to spend $1000 or more.

Stanton's 680 cartridge has actually been a favorite amongst club deejays and those demanding full, loud sound for many years. MPC1000 Sampling Production Studio

OVERVIEW
Now in black. The MPC 1000 is a fully re-designed MPC series. It maintains the key features that made the orignal series the industry standard, but also integrates new features to make it more portable and easier to integrate to computer-based studios.

FEATURES
The MPC 1000 features a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo sampler with 136 seconds of mono sampling time standard (expandable to 24m28sec). Sound wave patterns are displayed as wave forms, making it possible to edit samples both visually and aurally. Effects including pitch, LFOs, envelopes, time stretch and resample are available for use with all sounds. A new addition to the 1000 series includes two stereo effects and one master effect each of which are assignable to all sounds. These stereo effects include chorus, flanger, bit grunger, 4-band EQ (also available in master), compressor (also available in master), phase shifter, tremolo, flying pan and reverb. Another improvement over past MPC's is the inclusion of a high pass filter, and both the low and high pass filters on the 1000 are 2-pole per voice.

The sequencer section is where the MPC has really derived its great reputation. With a 100,000 note memory and a capacity of up to 99 sequences that can be recorded in either linear or pattern-style, the 1000 is an extremely powerful machine. It also features a step edit mode, a loop recording function and 16 level, full level, tap tempo, auto punch and undo sequence features, making it extremely fast and intuitive to work with.

The hardware on the MPC 1000 offers enough connections to satisfy the most demanding recording applications. 2 new hardware features on the 1000 make it more compatible with computer based studios than its predecessors. The first improvement is the Compact Flash port which takes cards that range from 32MB (included) to 2GB. The second is the inclusion of a USB port that supports storage on MAC and PC via the Mass Storage Class USB standard. Basically, M.S.C. is a file management system that allows you to drag and drop sound files from the MPC to your computer's hard drive and vice versa, via the USB port. These 2 features negate the need for those slow floppy and zip disks, a weakness of previous MPC models.

The back panel of the 1000 is equipped with stereo 1/4" INs and OUTs, four 1/4" individual OUTs, digital S/PDIF IN and OUT, two MIDI INs and OUTs, a headphone OUT and two footswitch INs. The dimensions of the unit are 13" by 8" and it weighs less than 8lbs. Its sample reading capabilities are compatible with the MPC 2000XL, MPC 4000, Z4, Z8 and the S5000/6000.

OUR OPINION
I can remember when the MPC 60 cost $3200 brand new out of the box. We've come a long way in these 15 years and as advancements in technologies are made, the consumer is the real winner in the end. The 1000 is a real deal production center, equipped with most of the features that made the MPC so legendary.

Some of the new features included with the MPC 1000 should be especially appealing to today's musician. The addition of a 2-pole high pass filter gives the user a new range of sound design possibilities previously unavailable to the MPC. On previous models, the internal effects were either limited or cost extra to buy the expansion boards. The different effects that come standard with the 1000 allow the user to more fully shape their sounds within the MPC, lessening the need for outboard gear or upgrades.

In our opinion, the greatest improvement with the 1000 is the inclusion of the Mass Storage Class USB standard and the Compact Flash port. For CPU users this will negate the need for floppy and Zip discs that can be slow and difficult to manage. The speed of being able to drag and drop sound files as well as the convenience of having all your samples at your finger tips, displayed on your computer screen, will save a lot of time and creative energy. The new methods of memory storage (Compact Flash card and USB) will ensure that the user's data doesn't get lost as formats change and that the MPC 1000 will be able to communicate with new equipment as it is released in the future.

Overall the most important element the 1000 retained from its MPC lineage is its ease of use. Its layout and sequencing section is intuitive, making it a fast learn. The trademark trigger pads and sequencing features make it a powerful, realistic drum programming tool. Portability is no longer an issue with the 1000's new compact size. Take it to djing gigs and trigger sound effects or homemade creations into the mix. For live bands the 1000 can add anything from more powerful drums to atmospheric sound scapes, all at the touch of sixteen buttons. By no means a lightweight, the 1000 will probably end up dominating the hardware based production market for years to come.

FEATURES
Having USB/MIDI connectivity, 49 high quality, semi-weighted, full size keys (with aftertouch) and 12 genuine MPC drum pads (48 pads total with 4 pad banks) all in one piece is the maind draw of the MPK49. The pads themselves not only look and feel just like those on an MPC, but they also feature the MPC's velocity and pressure sensitivity, Full Level and 12 Levels option, Note Repeat, Swing Parameters, and Arpeggio functions. Tap tempo and time-division buttons are also available for real time control of Note Repeat and Arpeggio clock speeds. In addition to the pads there are several other controls including 8 full-sized sliders (with 3 controller banks for each for 24 sliders total), 8 assignable backlit switches (with 3 controller banks each for 24 switches total), pitch bend and mod wheel, and input for expression pedals for a total of 76 assignable controls. A large, easy to read custom LCD display and MMC/MIDI start stop transport buttons are also available.

Also of note is the included Ableton Live Lite Akai Edition software (Mac or PC) which contains 28 custom Akai impulse presets with samples so you can start producing right out of the box.


OUR OPINION
With the genuine MPC pads and control features - the MPK49 is almost like purchasing an MPC and high-end USB controller keyboard in one (for a very reasonable price). In addition - it has ample assignable controls for even the most demanding producers and knob tweekers and is very well equipped to be rocked in the studio or live performance. All this, plus Ableton Live Lite Akai Edition included makes the MPK-49 a top notch choice for anyone looking for a USB/MIDI controller. Recommended.
