TITLE: La Planete Sauvage
ARTIST:
Lane Goraguer
LABEL:
EMI France 1973

" This is a record I didn't know anything about nad I picked it up for cheap. It looked like something cool. Almost the whole record is variations of the same theme, but its just real drugged out, crazy space stuff. Something Portishead might use. It really doesn't sound like too much other stuff. It's very electronic and funky. Supposedly it was a fairly popular movie, but the soundtrack is real tough to find in New York. "

TITLE: Cannonball Adderley Quintet & Orchestra
ARTIST:
Cannonball Adderley Quintet feat. David Axelrod and Lalo Schiffrin
LABEL:
Capitol late 60's/early 70's

" It's an incredible record and not that hard to find, definitely worth picking up if you see it. Very long songs with lots of funky jazz pieces on here. A great line-up of people with David Axelrod doing the production and Schiffren conducting a few of the songs with an orchestra. The Beatnuts used something on here for some interlude somewhere."

TITLE: Mass for Today- An Electronic Ballet
ARTIST: Pierre Henry
LABEL: Limelight ???

" This one took a long time to find. A crazy record that is the score for a French ballet. His earlier things were mostly pure electronic, which I am not that into. But on this record he worked with the French rock musician Michel Colomber and the sound is more like psychedelic rock and funk things, but very original. It has a lot of interesting pieces, including the famous rare groover "Teen Tonic". There are some similarities to the album "Moog Indigo" (Gangstarr's "Just to get a Rep" sample source), but I think this album, as a whole is much stronger.
"

TITLE: The Deadly Affair Soundtrack
ARTIST: Quincy Jones
LABEL: Venue 1968

" I'm not that into Bossa Nova that much, but this is real smooth and nice. Quincy Jones has done a lot of excellent soundtracks, but this one is one of my favorites of his. It's very mellow and pretty. Astrud Gilberto does vocals on some of the tracks. Royal Flush got a sample off of here somewhere.
"

TITLE: Bruce Lee Enter the Dragon
ARTIST: Lalo Schifrin
LABEL: Warner Brothers 1973 (Japanese Pressing)

For those who don't know, the US version of this classic movie is a super rare funky classic. Just check out the intro of the movie and you'll get a sense of it. This is the even rarer Japanese pressing. We've never even seen this before.

" It has a bunch of dialogue and a couple of tracks that aren't on the domestic release, even the original. It's Enter The Dragon! What can I say. The dialogue is great and cool music too.
"

TITLE: Movements
ARTIST: Johnny Harris
LABEL:
Warner Brothers 1970

" Weird soul stuff. He does a great cover of the song "Light My Fire" on here and I'm a big fan of that song. Most of the record is really good, but there really isn't anything else that matches that song. Most of his other stuff is British-only release and the other records I have heard by him don't really match this one. I think mostly he played on other people's records and got involved in the production aspects of recording. "

TITLE: Histoire De Melody Nelson
ARTIST: Serge Gainsbourg
LABEL:
Phillips (France) late 60's

" I got this off a friend of mine. Very funky and really French. The first track on the album, "Melody," Beatnuts used that on the song "Superbad," I think. Beastie Boys also sample Serge a lot on their new album. The whole album is really mellow and funky with a sort of stoned groove. Great for listening to and just mellowing out. All of his stuff is good and pretty hard to find, but for me this is one of my favorites.
"

TITLE: Word! Jazz
ARTIST: The Fred Katz Group featuring Ken Nordine
LABEL:
Dot Records 1957

" This is kind of standard jazz, but with some really spaced out late-50's spoken word on top of it. It's really bizarre. He's got this super announcer voice and does some strange things. It looks pretty goofy, but it's some real psychotic stuff to listen to. Weird jazz with sound effects and then Ken Nordine telling real stories over it.
