TITLE: Bad Boys 12"
ARTIST: Bad Boys feat. K Love
LABEL: Starlight 1985

Utilizing the Inspector Gadget theme and predating "The Show" by a few months at least, this was something of a major hit (at least in NY anyway). There was even a video which aired on NY Hot Tracks, complete with some random white guy in a cheap trench coat doing what one might presume to be the "Go Go Gadget" dance. Also memorable for the novelty of having a chick doing the human beatbox. She was horrible.

TITLE: Spelletjes (??!)
ARTIST: Sesam Straat
LABEL: Weton Wesgram BV

My good friend Gennessee coped this for me at a street fair in Amsterdam. On the surface it's a cheesy Sesame Street album from the Netherlands. It does have however, one of the illest breaks I've heard in a long, long time. In fact, it's so raw I threw it on my Breaks For Days cd (plug 1) Check track 35.

TITLE: Themes From Hit TV Shows
ARTIST: Power Records
LABEL: Peter Pan

Ironically, I stumbled across this the day cops arrested Barretta himself. Double irony: "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time!" More often than not, the versions on these assembly line cover comps were better than the originals. "Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow", while sans Sammy, has a tough drum break. Also check "Six Million Dollar Man" and "Police Woman."

TITLE: Mosquito 12"
ARTIST: West Street Mob
LABEL: Sugarhill 1984

Interesting interpretation of Hobo Scratch. I played this out last year and folks started having kaniption fits the moment that bassline dropped. Vicious Lee cuts the same sound as he did on "Beat Street Breakdown", which I just recently discovered by accident was the very top of "Apache" by Sugar Hill Gang.

TITLE: 5 Fingers of Death
ARTIST: Yours Truly
LABEL: All Access

Sorry people. I just had to do it (plug 2). This damn record has come through many a time when that rent was due.

TITLE: They Call Me Puma 12"
ARTIST: Seeborn and Puma
LABEL: Select 1987

I still love cutting this back and forth. Especially the intro from "My Mother the Car", which brilliantly segues into a fly ass Headhunters sample. The rhymes are a whole other matter. Why there was an acappella on here I'll never know. It only serves to highlight just how horrible this Puma fellow was. No joke, he raps like he's got a lifetime worth of spit in his cheeks.

TITLE: Hanging on a String
ARTIST: Loose Ends
LABEL: Virgin 1985

This was before R&B meant "Rap and Bullshit." Pete Rock knew what time it was. What's up with Pete producing a whole new Loose Ends album???

TITLE: Paula & Carole in the Magic Garden
ARTIST: Paula & Carole
LABEL: CAP 1978

Strictly on some nostalgic shit here. I found a gang of these in the basement of my local record spot. Those who grew up in NY during the 70's/early 80's know the time. This and the New Zoo Revue were the Barneys of our generation. By the 4th grade, there was a rumor going around that one of the broads had posed for Penthouse. "See ya" is probably the all time best tune to end a set with.

TITLE: Keep Dreaming
ARTIST: Kid Nice
LABEL: BYC 1983

Kid Nice was a local legend here in upstate NY during the early 80's and this was one of only two singles that he did. He was an ill ass DJ AND emcee. Unfortunately, just as KISS was starting to give his record some run, one of his boys jacked some equipment from Tommy Mattola's studio and Kid Nice was hence blacklisted from the industry...or so the story goes. I guess it should be of no surprise that while hardly anyone outside the lower Hudson Valley remembers who Kid Nice was, his 2 singles consistently command $50.+ from European EBayers. Go Figure.

TITLE: Bustin Loose 12"
ARTIST: The Alliance
LABEL: First Priority Music 1988

One of my all time favorite late 80's hip hop tunes. I could cut this for days!! "I'm super nice top notch and there ain't no question!" Good Lord. Whatever happened to these people?? The other two joints on here were just as cold. I think "Do it Do it" ended up on the Ego Trip comp a couple years back. "Oreo Cookie" was off of "You Are the One" by AM/FM.
