TITLE: Things We Like
ARTIST:
Jack Bruce
LABEL: ATCO 1968

This is my hip hop heavy hitter and I found it real cheap. Every body from Black Sheep to Smif & Wesson to your mom got a groove off of this. I bought it as a hip hop album, but actually dig some of the tracks. The sax player might look corny on the back cover, but he puts your high school band teacher to shame in the soul department. The cover is a real winner. Feeding animals is always a plus.

TITLE: World Galaxy
ARTIST: Alice Coltrane with Strings
LABEL: Impulse 1971

Alice is on some heavy shit right here. Tracks like "Galaxy in Turiya," and "Galaxy in Satchidanada" make you feel like your being attacked by a bunch of 15 foot cello's. Not dope, but after a couple of listens I started do dig it. Most of her LP's are like this or on some Biblicalocity, but this one has a super funky cover of big John's "A Love Supreme" with swami mami rami rapping over top.

TITLE: Good Morning Rain
ARTIST: Bonnie Dobson
LABEL: RCA 1970

Real slick horns, basslines, and drums that sound like a hippy Portishead. I have had a crush on Bonnie since I had this album and "Milk and Honey" is THE JAM. Bonnie brings the rain hardcore to the brain. Volusia and Orange county heads know about this one. Peace to aerolex and brethatMostfear.

TITLE: Mannekind
ARTIST: Shelly Manne
LABEL: Mainstream 1972

I bought this LP because I liked Shelly's shirt and he was obviously a drummer. I found out later that he was a bebop superstar drummer and this was like his midlife crisis album. Getting away from the conventional jazz sound he comes clean (<) with the use of rayguns, sheets of tin, and other toys to represent to the fullest. The melodies are super nice. I know Primo and Mumbles have this album.

TITLE: Tago-Mago
ARTIST: Can
LABEL:
UA 1971

The first German hip hop group. These guys are out of control. Some real emotionally driven songs with hella beats. Crazy Japanese lead singer adds to the excitement. This is one of my headphone jams when everyone else on the subway is listening to Ruff Ryders. It might be hard for a thugged out beat junky to start listening to rock, but this is a good place to start.

TITLE: Hurdy Gurdy Man
ARTIST: Donovan
LABEL: Epic 1968

Donovan is getting the Mickie Most out of them drums. "Get Thy Bearings" was my theme song for about two years. Biz rocked the horns well. The rest of the album is some english folky madness that I dig somewhat, But damn, "get thy bearings" is very fresh. Not rare, but me no care.

TITLE: S/T
ARTIST: Silver Apples
LABEL: Kapp 1969

Crazy White Dudes with just drums and osclators. Beats everywhere. This record is dope. It kind of sounds like Neil Young produced by Dj Shadow or something. Very dope. Extra bonus, got a poster of the group with the record. It has a quotation about how they make such fresh music with such trashy instruments. Word.

TITLE: S/T
ARTIST: Weather Report
LABEL: Columbia 1971

This is a record that is everywhere like the LP Carly Simon's nipples. I bought it when I just an infant digger because all the guys on the back turn into plastic man and extended off of the jacket, plus Miroslav Vitous has a pretty tough afro. I bought all of their albums I could find and haven't been disapointed (except that late 70's 8:30 type stuff that I don't touch). They have been sampled by Organized Konfusion, ATCQ, Freestyle Fellowship, Diamond D, The Pharycyde, etc. Some of it is spacey some of it is funky, but all of it is dope.

TITLE: Hot Rats
ARTIST: Frank Zappa
LABEL: Bizzare 1970

This is a very very dope jazz ish album by a wierdo Frank Zappa. I think this his first solo album. and I didn't expect at all what it sounded like. Groovey shit. I got this for about 3 bucks. It's the only Zappa album I own where he doesn't tell storys about talking to dogs or something. It has time signatures I don't even want to try and figure out. Another Zappa record with beats is "Apostrophy." The cover is real nice pshychodelic madness.

TITLE: The Cactus Album
ARTIST: 3rd Bass
LABEL: Def Jam 1989

You get the gasface .... 8>*. Guest appearance by Zev Luv X Someone should put together a video of all the good Yo MTV raps episodes from the 89-93. I want to see the "Similak Child" video. Was there a video for "Peachfuzz"?. Damn.. T.R.O.Y.M.T.V.R.

TITLE: Age Ain't Nothing but a Number
ARTIST: Chi-Ali
LABEL: Relativity

People have a memory loss. They forgot how fun hip hop used to be. I like Chi Ali's outfit.
