Aries Microphone
OVERVIEW
The Aries is a professional condenser microphone designed specifically to capture live vocals with the highest quality. While condenser microphones offer much better responsiveness than dynamic mics, they are usually confined to the studio because their sonic sensitivity is accompanied by handling sensitivity. Now M-Audio's proprietary internal shock-mounting technology allows the Aries to deliver studio fidelity while minimizing handling noise and standing up to the rigors of the road and live performance. Use the Aries with confidence either during live performance or recording in the studio.
USES
- record vocals
- live performance
OUR OPINION
The Aries is a great mic option, because it does the job of two separate mics (performance and recording), and performs well in each category. The Aries is especially useful for vocalists (ie hip-hop emcess) that like to hold the mic while recording. M-Audio asks: why settle for the average sonic quality of a dynamic on stage when you can have the superior quality of a condenser?

Audio Buddy Mic Preamp
OVERVIEW
Preamps are a very necessary link in the recording chain. They amplify (increase the volume) of audio signals, which are often times too low for recording purposes, without causing distortion or sound degradation. The Audio Buddy is M-Audio's best selling preamp, and serves as an easy and inexpensive way to boost both mic and line signals in your home studio. Simplicity is the Audio Buddy's strength as it offers just the essential features while keeping the price very affordable.
USES
amplifying mic and line signals
increasing the level when recording vinyl to a computer
supplying microphones with phantom power
FEATURES
The Audio Buddy features two (2) independent preamp channels, each fitted with both a balanced XLR input and an unbalanced 1/4" instrument input. Each channel has individual gain controls. For outputs, the Audio Buddy includes two (2) 1/4" outputs, which can be either balanced or unbalanced. There are light indicators for phantom power, clip, and active signal. The overall design of the Audio Buddy is extremely compact and the unit runs off a 9V power supply that is included.
OUR OPINION
To many, mic pre-amps are one of the most mysterious pieces of the modern recording studio. Few products vary so widely in price ($50-$6000) yet offer such similar features. The Audio Buddy's price tag puts it in the low end of the preamp market, but its quality build and M-Audio's "less-is-more" design principle place it above preamps more than three times its cost. This is an excellent starter amp, or a compact portable piece. In addition, the Audio Buddy's signal boosting power can be used to increase any audio signal. Thanks to its stereo design, another great use for it would be increasing the signal of vinyl recordings when transferring them to a computer ( you would still need a phonograph preamp or mixer as the Audio Buddy can't take a turntable signal directly.)

Audiophile 192K Audio Card Interface
OVERVIEW
M-Audio soundcards are the industry standard for home studio computer setups. The Audiophile 192 is the upgraded version of our most popular soundcard, the M-Audio Audiophile 2496. The most noticeable difference is the upgrade to 192kHz sampling rate which in addition to a low signal to noise ratio, will give you the highest quality sound for music production, mastering and critical listening.
USES
audio recording & playback
MIDI recording & playback
MIDI input & output
vinyl to digital transfers
FEATURES
In addition to the 24-bit/192kHz audio, the main strength of the 192 is the array of input/output options. These include 1/4" balanced inputs and outputs, separate 1/4" monitor output, 16 channel MIDI I/O, and digital I/O. All of these options feature excellent signal-to-noise ratio for high quality recording and listening.
OUR OPINION
In this category and price-level, M-Audio has very few competitors. They offer the most features at an incredible price. The 24-bit/192kHz audio capabilities also ensures that the Audiophile 192 will grow with your studio.

OUR OPINION
With features comparable to other popular USB MIDI controllers such as Akai's MPK-49 (drum pads, sliders, knobs), the Axiom is a great value for under $300. This 61 key version might detract from its portability, but will appeal to producers that like the freedom of more keys to perform with and the semi-weighted action gives it a great realistic piano feel.

Updated version of M-Audio's Fast Track, their best selling USB interface. The redesigned model features the same simple "plug and play" USB connection for super easy 2-in/2-out recording as well as several improvements including a sleek new look and more powerful headphone outputs. Also includes Pro-Tools M-Powered software for professional studio recordings right out the box.
FEATURES
The Fast Track features 24-bit/48kHz professional sound quality with 2-ins and 2-outs, all with simple plug and play USB 2.0 connectivity. It features 1x XLR mic input with 48v of phantom power, and 1x 1/4" instrument input each with individual gain control conveniently located on the top of the unit. Standard stereo RCA outs and a simplified direct monitoring system to hear the inputs as they go directly through the interface solving any latency problems. Also includes the easy to use Pro-Tools M-Powered software for studio-standard recording, editing and mixing features, effects, and more. Powered via USB so no adaptor is required (making it handy for mobile use).
OUR OPINION
The Fast Track is a simple and affordable interface geared towards producers recording on single channels (i.e. vocalists, guitarists, instrumentalists, etc). Producers and DJs using stereo gear would probably want to look at the Fast Track Pro model which allows you to record a stereo signal from 1/4" or RCA at the same time. The inclusion of ProTools M-Powered makes this a great deal.

Firewire Solo Interface
OVERVIEW
The Firewire Solo is an affordable interface which in addition to standard 1/4" and digital inputs & outputs, also boasts separate microphone and guitar inputs. This flexibility allows you to perform standard interface functions (recording, sampling, inputting DJ setup to computer, outputting sound to speakers and headphones), as well as recording directly from mics and guitars. The Solo is an excellent choice for producers/songwriters who want Firewire performance and the added flexibility of several input options, all in one very portable package.
FEATURES
The Solo's Firewire offers zero-latency connection to your computer at the studio standard 24-bit/96kHz. In addition, the Solo is bus-powered through the Firewire, eliminating the need for a power cord.
Inputs: The mic input is an XLR port with phantom power, independent gain control and clip meter. The guitar input is a standard 1/4" input also with independent gain control and clip meter. The back of the Solo features a S/PDIF digital input/output and standard unbalanced 1/4" inputs.
Outputs: A headphone output with independent level control is also included on the front panel, which is essential for mobile producers who don't have access to monitors. Additional outputs include dual Firewire outs for daisy-chaining, balanced 1/4 line outputs, and S/PDIF digital output.
OUR OPINION
The Firewire Solo fills several needs. For those who will utilise the mic and/or guitar into their productions, the Firewire Solo is an excellent all-in-one solution. For those who want an affordable Firewire interface, the Firewire Solo is one of the best (and only) at this price-point. And finally, for those who want to use this as their primary portable interface, the metal construction, price and the ability to capture vocals makes this an excellent travel piece.

Keystation 61es MIDI Controller
OVERVIEW
The Keystation 61es is a full-sized, semi-weighted keyboard MIDI-controller intended for both program manipulation and true keyboard playing. The minimal design of the keyboard puts the emphasis on playing more than most MIDI-controllers on the market. Like all M-Audio products, the Keystation 61es was produced to high standards, yet maintains a low price point by including only the features you need.
USES
- The semi-weighted keys are excellent for piano simulation
- Controlling software, sound modules and samplers
FEATURES
As the name suggests, the Keystation 61es has 61 full-sized keys. What separates it from all other controllers is that the velocity sensitive keys are also semi-weighted. "Semi-weighted" means the keys have a response that is similar to the action on a real piano. This is an invaluable feature for those who actually want to learn to play the keyboard, in addition to controlling sound modules and software.
Controls include pitch bend and modulation wheels, a volume slider and octave +/- buttons. The Keystation features a USB port, and is also equipped with a separate MIDI out connection to control external devices (samplers, sound modules, etc.). The unit ships with a 6' USB cable and instruction manual. The Keystation 61es is plug-and-play compliant with both Mac OSX and Windows XP, which means there is no need for drivers or other complicated setup processes. Other options include the ability to power the unit with a 9VDC power adapter and the option of attaching a separate sustain foot pedal (both sold separately).
OUR OPINION
The main reason to consider this controller over others is the keys. If you learned on a traditional piano, and want to translate that into the electronic music, this model will ease the transition. Conversely, if you want to learn how to play piano, this will also do the job. Until recently, semi-weighted keys were only found on expensive ($600+) MIDI-controllers, and once again M-Audio leads the way in bringing the same technology for a fraction of the price. Another attractive feature of this keyboard is its simple layout and design, which lets you concentrate on playing music instead of noodling with sounds. If you are looking for something to control numerous soft-synths and samplers, this may not be the right choice, but for those who want a practice/performance MIDI-Controller, the 61es's features are all you'll need.

Luna Microphone
OVERVIEW
The Luna is a large diaphragm condenser mic that is perfectly suited for all-around, entry-level recording. Its large diaphragm capsule and circuit design make it ideal for recording vocals, guitar, piano and other high to mid-range audio sources. M-Audio has earned a great reputation for offering competitively priced products with pro features, and the Luna is no exception.
USES
- versatile, entry-level condenser microphone
- recording vocals, guitar, piano and other standard audio sources
FEATURES
The Luna has a fixed cardioid pattern, the standard for vocal microphone design. The audio signal is captured with a large (1.1" diameter) evaporated gold diaphragm and travels through all class-A discrete circuitry and hardware. M-Audio also included a transformer (an essential element of tube circuitry) in the Luna's signal path to give the mic a warmer, "vintage" sound. Operating the mic requires 48v of phantom power (standard for large diaphragm mics), which can be supplied by your preamp or mixing board. The mic's outer shell has a unique, flat, moon-like shape made of double mesh brass. Also included with the Luna are a shock mount and a hard case for storing the mic.
OUR OPINION
There are several competitively priced, Chinese made, large diaphragm microphones similar to the Luna on the market today (ie Studio Projects). M-Audio separates itself from the competition by incorporating advanced American design methods and parts into the Luna. The transformer-based design will give your recordings more character, while maintaining a subtle quality that is never too obtrusive. The Luna can handle all types of audio signals with great results, except extremely low frequencies like a kick drum or bass amp. If you have a beginner/intermediate studio and plan to spend less than $200, the Luna is an easy option. The price point, features, and M-Audio design make this a strong buy for overall value and performance.

For file management and computer connectivity, the Microtrack is heads above DAT machines (the popular choice for mobile recording). You can record both in WAV (up to 24-bit/96kHz) and MP3 formats (320kbps/48kHz). The Microtrack records onto CompactFlash and Microdrive cards (sold separately), and when plugged into your computer, the Microtrack appears as a hard drive for easy file management. The USB connection also charges the internal lithium battery (power plug also included).
The list of features continues with a large digital screen with an interface similar to the iPod (which can be dimmed for discreet use in dark rooms). There are both RCA and 1/8" outputs for monitoring. Connect the RCA outputs to an amp and use the Microtrack for playback, or plug in the included headphones and use it like an iPod. There are separate left and right level controls with peak indicators, and dedicated buttons for record, hold, play, etc. Extras included: earbuds, t-shaped stereo mini-mic, usb cable, usb power supply, protective carrying case and mic pouch as well as editing software.
OUR OPINION
The MicroTrack is small, easy to use, and most importantly, it seamlessly integrates with your computer. Record your DJ set, save it as an MP3, and publish it on your website; or record a live vocal or sample, save it as a WAV, and use it in your production. And with the version II updates, M-Audio just made a good thing even better. Recommended.

Solaris Microphone
OVERVIEW
The Solaris is a large diaphragm multi-pattern, condenser mic that is versatile enough for most every recording situation. M-Audio combined both vintage and modern elements into the Solaris' design to give it a unique sound. Its large diaphragm, brass capsule and circuit design make it ideal for recording vocals, guitar, piano and other high to mid-range audio sources. In addition, its three-polar patterns make it suitable for a wide range of unusual recording applications. M-Audio has earned a great reputation for offering competitively priced products with pro features and the Solaris is no exception.
USES
- versatile, entry-level, multi-pattern, condenser microphone
- recording vocals, guitar, piano and other standard audio sources from all directions
FEATURES
The Solaris has a three-pattern cardioid design, which makes it like three microphones in one. You can choose between omni (picks up sound equally from all directions), cardiod (only picks up sound from the front) and figure 8 (picks up sound mainly from the front and back). The audio signal is captured with a large (1.1" diameter) evaporated gold diaphragm and travels through all class-A discrete circuitry and hardware. M-Audio also included a transformer (an essential element of tube circuitry) in the Solaris's signal path to give the mic a warmer, "vintage" sound.
Also included on the Solaris is a 10dB switchable attenuation pad (for louder operation level) and a bass cut pad that cuts at 6dB per octave (eliminates hum, rumble and other unwanted low frequencies). Operating the Solaris requires 48v of phantom power (standard for large diaphragm mics), which can be supplied by your preamp or mixing board. The mic's outer shell has a unique, flat, moon-like shape made of double mesh brass. It comes with a shock mount and a hard case for storing the mic.
OUR OPINION
There are several competitively priced, Chinese made, large diaphragm microphones similar to the Solaris on the market today (ie Studio Projects). M-Audio separates itself from the competition by incorporating advanced American design methods and parts into the Solaris. The transformer-based design will give your recordings more character, while maintaining a subtle quality that is never too obtrusive.
There are three main differences between the Solaris and M-Audio's less expensive microphone model, the Luna. First and foremost is the inclusion of multi polar patterns. These allow the user more room for different micing techniques and experimentation. The omni-directional pattern is great for capturing an entire room, while the figure-8 pattern could be used to allow two vocalists to sing into one mic from both sides. Another difference between them is the Solaris' pad switch, which can help to amplify quiet sound sources. Lastly the bass cut can aid in eliminating annoying low-pitch rumbles and other unwanted noises.
Just like the Luna, the Solaris frequency response can handle all types of audio signals with great results, minus extremely low frequencies like a kick drum or bass amp. If you have a beginner/intermediate studio and plan to spend less than $300, the Luna is an easy option. The price point, features, and M-Audio design make this a strong buy for overall value and performance.

Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System
OVERVIEW
M-Audio's Torq Xponent is a complete digital DJing system featuring Torq DJ software and the Xponent controller / USB interface. Just add a computer and digital music files, and you have a full digital DJ setup with hands-on control, CD turntable / mixer simulation, and a plethora of extra features.
FEATURES
M-Audio's Torq DJing has quickly established itself as a viable option to Serato. It has a similar feature set to Serato, but also includes extras such as VST compatibility, easy performance recording, and multiple sample banks.
The Xponent controller is the first M-Audio controller specially designed for digital DJs. Before the Xponent, digital DJs were forced to use standard MIDI-controllers or DJ controllers by second rate manufacturers. The Xponent was designed with everyday DJs in mind with M-Audio quality, durable controls, and an emphasis on tactile feel. It is also maximized for Torq as all the controls are mapped instantly.
The Torq's wheel controls, knobs, buttons and faders simulate a (2) CD turntable and (1) deluxe mixer setup. You can use them to cue, mix, scratch, and effect digital files without ever using your computer keyboard or mouse. In addition with over 70 individual controls, the Xponent was also designed for sampling on the fly, looping, using effects, etc.

Transit USB Interface
OVERVIEW
Small enough to fit in your pocket, Transit brings hi-resolution 24-bit/96kHz recording and playback to any USB-compatible computer. In simple terms, this card upgrades your computer's soundcard to studio quality both for input and output. For further ease, the Transit is USB powered.
USES
- audio recording & playback
- vinyl to digital transfers
FEATURES
The Transit comes equipped with both stereo 1/8" analog IN and OUT, as well as an optical digital IN. With a couple adaptors, you can record most sources (we wouldn't recommend mic use) with studio quality 24-bit/96kHz sound. And for discerning ears, the Transit can boost up your computer's sound card, increasing output sound quality and loudness.
OUR OPINION
The simplicity of this product is the main strength of this model. Priced under $80, just think of it as a useful adaptor. Throw it in your studio bag, use it to record on the fly, convert audio, or listen to iTunes or DVD player with improved sound.

X-Session Pro USB MIDI DJ Mixer Controller
OVERVIEW
M-Audio has taken their most popular DJ product, the X-Session controller, and made it even more DJ friendly with this new Pro version. The main advancement here is that this controller is laid out like a standard DJ mixer and features DJ-friendly faders, knobs, and buttons. The X-Session Pro connects to your computer via USB, and allows you to control such applications as Ableton Live, Traktor, or any other software that supports MIDI Learn.
FEATURES
In conjunction with your program of choice, the X-Session's crossfader, up-faders, buttons, and knobs, can be set-up this controller to act like a standard mixer. This gives you the all important tactile control while DJing with programs such as Ableton and Traktor. In addition, the X-Session has so many controller options, you can easily assign your digital features (cue points, effects) to the other remaining controllers.
The X-Session is highly portable, weighing only 2 lbs and measuring considerably smaller than a traditional mixer.
