item #: hp-663

AKG has made their name with over 60 years of experience with studio microphones, headphones and wireless systems. With a super reliable sound and attention to comfort, they've developed a cult following with studio guys and anybody serious about sound. Although their...   expand review  studio headphones can also be used by djs, the K181's are their first headphones specifically designed for dj use. They've spent a lot of time developing these and the results give you pretty much everything you could ask for in a professional set of DJ headphones. To begin with, the sound maintains AKG's reputation with a very high output that maintains clarity even under the highest power conditions. These were designed to be used in any sound environment and have a power rating of 3500mW (much higher than most dj headphones). That great sound is kept in your ears with a comfortable closed-back design that also helps eliminate external noise pollution. For active dj'ing, the K181's offer a bunch of features that dj's will find useful. The ear pieces feature a unique swivel action, nearly able to turn 360 degrees, which makes single ear monitoring easy and more comfortable. The cord is one sided and detachable (with mini xlr attachment), so it won't get in the way and can't get yanked out while moving around (this is one of the top ways dj headphones break). They also have 2 switches on the ear piece: one for bass boost, and one for changing between mono and stereo sound for easy one ear mixing. In terms of construction, these feel very strong + durable. The extra flexible design means that you can't break them as easily and the ear pieces are that thick & plush leather that won't rip off. And finally, the outer ear pieces are made with a rubberized finish for easy gripping and adjustment. These are great dj headphones. The sound quality is excellent, they fit snugly on your head to block out exterior noise, they feel very durable and they have a bunch of cool features that'll make your life easier. Highly recommended. -the mgmnt

The little brother of AKG's professional level K181 DJ headphones, the K81DJs share many of the K181's features at a much more affordable price. The sound quality on the K81's is outstanding for the price. They naturally have a loud output, and when...   expand review  tested in-store the bass and treble remained clear even with mixer volumes turned all the way up. The design of the K81s remind me of Sennheiser's SP1 headphones (which is a very good thing). As opposed to most bulky dj headphones, these are streamlined in all ways, with smaller yet very powerful earpieces, slim cord and no nonsense construction. I personally prefer the smaller size earphones because they are lighter on your head and generally create a better "suction" between your ears and the earphones. The ear pieces feature unique swivel action that allows them to turn nearly 360 degrees, which makes single ear monitoring easy and more comfortable. They are also covered with a rubberized finish for easy gripping and adjustment. The K81's are definitely a top choice for this price range. -the mgmnt

Allen & Heath's name is synonymous with premium mixers, but with the XD-53 they have applied their sound know-how to headphones. The XD-53's feature professional performance specifications and rugged reliability with a style that will complement any DJ setup (especially the Xone...   expand review  mixers). Check the details: 53mm drivers with high powered neodymium magnet design, rotating ear pieces for easy one-ear monitoring, coiled cale with one sided exit, and a folding design that fits in included carry pouch. In addition, the XD-53's incorporate a circumaural design which provides excellent isolation from ambient noise (great for DJ's working in loud environments) and are also great for home studio monitoring. Basically, if you are serious about sound quality and DJ functionality, these are for you. Recommended. -the mgmnt

OVERVIEW Audio-Technica enters the noise-canceling market with the smartly designed and strategically-priced ATH-ANC7. Compared to the similar Bose models, the ATH-ANC7 is considerably more inexpensive (Bose start at $299.00), features more noise reduction, and works in passive mode when the batteries run...   expand review  out (Bose models simply shut off). Audio-Technica's great headphone design is also reflected here, with a sleek and durable design, excellent sound quality, a deluxe carrying case, and all the necessary adaptors. FEATURES The ATH-ANC7 effectively reduces background noise up to 85% (up to 20 dB). One battery will provide approximately 40 hours of noise-cancellation; and once the battery runs out of power, the ATH-ANC7 will still perform in passive mode. The ATH-ANC7 maintains high quality sound with closed-back style, 40 mm drivers with neodymium magnet systems for deeper bass, extended treble and higher fidelity. When not in use, the ATH-ANC7 folds flat and includes a deluxe traveling case and 3 adaptors (right angle extension, headphone jack, and airplane jack). -mgmnt

As a company, Audio Technica built their reputation on superior microphone construction, but their headphone line also has quite a bit to offer. These are their top of the line headphones. They have been specifically designed for studio use, but will work...   expand review  just as well for the working dj. Construction As with everything we've seen from Audio Technica, the ATH-D40's feature a well-thought out construction that satisfies the need for both durability and comfort. The earphones are the swivel-type, with a single exit cord. The cord itself is uncoiled and features a protective metal sheath to limit the possibility of breaking. As for the comfort, the earpieces will cover your whole ear with a snug (but not too tight) fit and the top band features thick foam cushioning. Sound The ATH-D40's are specifically designed to have an enhanced bass response for the lower frequencies, which makes them quite useful for club-oriented music. They feature 40mm drivers which are louder than you may expect. Sony V700s are listed at 50mm, but these are right there. These headphones block out most outside noise with their cupping ear piece design, which also helps to provide a more defined sound. Our Opinion These are a viable option to other headphones in the same price range like the Technics DJ-1200 and Sony V700. From testing, the sound is very comparable to those headphones and could be even better in some respects. Big plus in the feel department. User replaceable parts are also a big plus. They aren't as flashy as some of the above-mentioned headphones, but not everybody needs flash. -the mgmnt

These are Audio Technica's entry level headphones, and it appears that entry level for them is miles above anybody else's definition. To begin with, the construction is as solid as you would expect from a much more expensive set, and unlike similarly...   expand review  priced models, these feel like you could actually take them out to gigs without fear of breaking them. The phones are connected to the headset via two sturdy metal rods rather than the usual plastic, and connected with actual metal screws. In terms of comfort, these have a high rating. The earpieces fit snug and easy and the headband is thick and heavily padded. The sound is again way above what you'd expect at this price range. These feature 40mm drivers which deliver a loud signal with very reasonable sound quality. The bottom line is the MTH-20 are the only headphones under $50 that you could consistently use in a club situation. Single coiled cable. 1/4" adaptor included. -the mgmnt

With the 3000 series headphones, Stanton has retained all the features which make their 2000 headphone a solid purchase, and improved upon it with a new design and several new features. Most obvious will be the new look and feel, which has...   expand review  been completely updated (and based closely on Sony's V700 model). The 3000 also features a blue led light on each ear piece that blinks in time with the beat (this can be switched off quite easily if desired). More importantly, the 3000 gives you the option to alternate between full sound, low pass filter (takes out treble), and high pass filter (takes out bass), which may make mixing on a loud system a bit easier. The basic specs remain more or less the same as the 2000s: large 50mm drivers, the single cord design which can be detached from the headphones, and the durable 1/4" connection plug that comes standard rather than as an attachment. The importance of the detachable cable can't be stressed enough, as this connection is often the area in which most headphones have problems.
