expand review exception to this rule, with a spec list that outperforms all other audio/MIDI interfaces in the under $500 category. The one draw back to the Gina 3G is that it requires installation of an included PCI card for operation. While the installation process itself is easy, this means users of laptops, iMacs and other computers without a PCI slot cannot use the Gina. However for those with a PCI slot, consider this a rock solid hub for your home studio.
USES
Sound recording & playback
High Quality A/D (Analog-Digital) & D/A (Digital-Analog) conversion
Multi-track recording, sequencing, editing and mixing (when combined with software)
8 output, "breakout" analog mixing
Digital transfers
LP to CD transfers
FEATURES
The Gina 3G is fully equipped for all 24bit/96kHz digital audio and MIDI recording scenarios. Analog connections include two (2) universal 1/4/XLR inputs each fitted with its own low-noise, phantom powered studio grade preamp and six (6) balanced 1/4" outputs. Digital connections include ADAT (light pipe) in and out (which will allow you to simultaneously record eight (8) tracks at once when used with other light pipe equipped devices) as well as both optical and coaxial S/PDIF stereo connections. Also included are MIDI in and out, and a headphone jack with individual level control. Echo's advantage over other hardware devices is most apparent in the high quality of its A/D (analog/digital) and D/A converters, which out perform all other interface converters in the same class on both paper and to the ear.
Almost all-major recording/sequencing software (Cubase, Logic, LIVE, Reason, etc) is supported with the Gina 3G, with the exception of Protools (which requires Digidesign hardware). It also comes with a free copy of Mackie's Tracktion recording/sequencing software, which is laid out simply like a sophisticated version of Apple's Garage Band. Echo's own console software is included for mixing and monitoring your work and the Gina 3G can also support surround sound playback.
OUR OPINION
If you are looking for the best possible sound quality for your recording but are not willing to pay the extra $1000 for a separate converter unit, then the Gina 3G should be your choice. Analog to digital conversion is the most crucial stage in digital recording. The higher the quality of the converters you use, the better the dynamic range and less errors your recordings will have. While most budget interfaces have converters that will do the job well, none can match the quality of Echo products. Unfortunately Echo are yet to enter the USB/FireWire market, which means the Gina 3G can only be used with tower Mac's and PC's equipped with PCI card slots. Because of this, laptop and iMac users cannot use the Gina 3G. -the mgmnt

expand review is the 61 key version, excellent for small home studios or full size studios. It features full sized keys and a selection of four velocity curves to adjust to the individual's playing style (including a fixed level – great for keyboard novices).
FEATURES
Additional features include pitch blend and modulation wheels, and a joystick which can control X/Y or work as a mouse to control on-screen setup. Two assignable switches can be set to either momentary or toggle operation, and both On and Off values can be set. These switches can be set as Program Change up and down buttons. A pair of knobs can be assigned independently to any controller, and both transmit the full range of values. The K49 also features an assignable slider. And if you need hands-free control, the K-Series also includes an assignable foot switch input on the back panel.
Since May 2007, until further notice, the K61 and K61P controllers are coming bundled with the following cutting edge software products: Live Lite 6 Korg Edition, SampleTank 2 Korg Edition which comes with over 150 MB of custom sounds, UVI Korg Edition with 700 MB of drum kits and sounds, Reason Adapted 3.0 for Korg, and the MDE-X which contains a full version of the Korg Legacy Collection's multi-effect plug-in software(For units purchased after May 2007, check the Korg website to download a redemption form).
The K61 also comes with free editor software so you can create and save custom controller assignments – or scenes – in an easy, visual manner. In addition, the K-Series comes with with a free M1 Le software synthesizer. The M1 was introduced back in 1988 and went on to become the best selling synthesizer of all time. This software version perfectly reproduces the original M1 while taking advantage of the power and benefits of your computer interface.
OUR OPINION
The K-Series is an excellent choice for those who like their controllers straight-forward, clean, and simple. These controllers are great for beginners and advanced musicians alike, offering excellent feel at this price range. The inclusion of the editor program and the M1 Le software makes this an excellent all-around purchase.

In addition, it now comes with the Creative Kontrol Pak 2 software bundle which includes Live Lite 4 Korg Edition, Sample Tank 2 Korg Edition, UVI Korg Edition, Reason Adapted 3.0 for Korg, and MDE-X.
USES:
- Controlling virtual instruments & programs
- Controlling MIDI compatible devices
- USB/MIDI Interface
- Drum programming
FEATURES
The obvious spotlight feature on the Kontrol49 are the keys. For those who are serious about keyboard play, the Kontrol49 offers the best combination of full-featured controller and realistic keyboard play. In addition, with the eight velocity curves, it is easier to achieve the sound you want from your soft synths programs (quick stabs or longer sustain). The Kontrol series is also the first controller series in this price range to feature drum pad controllers. We at the Lab have always advocated using drum pads for programming drums, and the Kontrol49 gives you that option and more.
The additional (8) assignable sliders, (8) rotary knobs, and new vector joystick give you full control of today's complex programs and a wide range of MIDI-instruments. A useful innovation here includes the backlit LCD screens for each slider-knob combo with customizable tags and color coding. This eliminates the need for messy tape with assignments written on it, and allows you to change settings faster. In addition to presets for most popular programs, you also get Korg's Editor/Librarian software which allows you to create and store custom configurations on your computer. For Reason 3.0 users, the Kontrol49 comes Native Mode ready.
OUR OPINION
The little-brother MicroKontrol is one of the first controllers we recommend to customers. When you want to step up your studio from an intermediate/portable studio, we would recommend the Kontrol49. It simply has all the features you could want in a controller, and all of them are quite useful. The realistic keyboard play and drum pads are two of the standout features here, and it's all brought together by Korg's reputation for usability and quality.

Korg makes it easy to use this wide array of sounds with great navigation, and quick ways of finding + previewing sounds.
As a controller, the microX features everything you need to synch up with your computer. There are four main knobs and a 4-way joystick, all of which are assignable and work with just about every software program (64 external templates are provided for easy use with the most popular software synths and production programs). USB connection (cable included) allows you to connect directly to the computer. They also include Editor software for reworking the microX's sounds from your computer- use as a standalone program or as a plug-in with your existing software.
OUR OPINION
The microX continues Korg's tradition of top of the line keyboards, and improves on their more recent entry's into affordable synths and controllers. The fact that you have a synthesizer and controller in one piece is a great thing in itself, but Korg always takes things a step further and has really provided an impressive, useful tool with the microX. Great look with the hard plastic carrying case as well.

expand review big brother the Korg RADIAS giving it thick, bold and crisp analog sounds that will definitely satisfy both beginners and experienced professionals. Its versatile synthesis modeling, ample effects and editing capabilities make it suitable for all types of music from r&b, funk, hip-hop, techno, and house, plus its MIDI I/O and USB connectivity allows it to fully integrate with and grow with your studio.
FEATURES
The R3's top feature is the solid analog synthesis from Korg's MMT (multiple modeling technology) engine. Usually used in much more expensive full size keyboards, this technology delivers full, rich analog sound (via 2 oscillators, 3 envelope generators, 2 LFO filters, + amp and noise generators per voice with 8 voice polyphony) all within the R3's very compact 37 key frame. Unlike many synths this size, the R3 features full size, velocity sensitive keys which makes it much easier to work with (a big complaint about the microKorg is the minikeys) and 2 timbre/8 voice performance power.
In addition to MMT synthesis, the R3 also boasts several features to further shape and tweak your sound. 2 filters with selectable routing are available: Filter 1 is a multi-mode resonant design that lets you continuously vary between various low-pass, high-pass and band reject characteristics. Filter 2 has a switchable, multi-mode resonant design that also includes comb filtering, which can be made to feed back in order to boost multiple series of overtones, giving you amazing potential for generating unique tonal changes. There are also 6 virtual patches available on the R3 that simulate the patch cord functions of older synthesizers (MS and PS series Korgs), a modulation sequencer that can apply time-varying changes to a specific parameter, a 2 band EQ for each timbre with 2 insert effects, and a flexible, editable arpeggiator with 6 different arpeggio patterns built in.
There are a total of 128 preset programs (16 banks x 8 programs) all of which are fully editable and feature a diverse range of sounds from highly complex synths using cross modulation, formant motion and arpeggios, to thick, warm sounds you would expect from analog modeling. The R3 also has 2 external audio input jacks that allow you to process and transform the sound from external audio sources. Create new sounds by playing other instruments and loops through the R3 and using the external audio source as a filter or oscillator.
Also included is a high quality vocoder with 16 channels, adjustable level and pan for each channel, formant shift, formant motion and formant hold functions, MIDI I/O features, USB connectivity and Korg's R3 Editor software to edit and save your programs with your Mac or PC.
OUR OPINION
If you are familiar with the best selling Korg microKorg, think of this as a step up... a BIG step up. The powerful MMT synthesis alone is worth the price of admission, but add to that the full size keys(!), a serious vocoder, MIDI and USB functions and compact portable size and you've got a great addition to your studio set up that won't break the bank. A great synth that is loaded with features you can really get deep with. Recommended. -snackmaster

Mackie's 1642-VLZ Pro is a semi-compact, fully featured analog mixer, designed for advanced home/project studios and multi-media post-production. The main function of this mixer is combining multiple audio signals (drums, bass, keys, sampler, etc) to mix into one output (monitors, headphones, master...
expand review recorder, etc.). For example, it could be used for recording an entire band, giving each sound an individual channel or it could be used if you have a lot of gear like a sampler, drum machine, microphone, synth, etc and want to hear them all at the same time. In addition it allows you to adjust levels, eq (3 band), and add effects to the individual channels of audio. After you are satisfied with the mix, you can output that signal into a computer or cd burner. The 1642 is especially useful for those using a multi-track recorder, the four-buss system can be used to direct single audio signals to individual multi-track channels, without having to plug cables in and out or use a patch bay. In terms of quality, the 1642 offers the same ultra-low noise level that has made Mackie the industry leader in semi-pro mixers, while its semi-compact design and strong steel chassis make it ideal for live situations where separate audio signals need to be mixed.
USES:
- Mixing multiple (maximum of 16) audio signals
- Microphone pre amplification
- Adding EQ to audio signals
- Multi-track recording with four-buss system
FEATURES
The main advantage of the 1642 over smaller models is its four buss system. Each channel is equipped with control buttons, when engaged they direct the channel's sound to a individual buss' input. The user connects each of the four buss' outputs directly to an individual input on their multi-track. With this set-up, the push of a button can send a sound directly to a channel of the multi-track with out any need for rewiring.
The 10 XDR™ (Extended Dynamic Range) pre-amps with the available phantom power included on the 1642 will allow the user to record an entire band with both pro and semi-pro mics. Engineered to give professional, clean results with plenty of headroom, these mic pre-amps will greatly improve your microphone based recordings.
The EQ section of the 1642 is strategically designed to give the user parametric control on all mono channels and a set 4-band EQ on the stereo channels. The four mono AUX sends and stereo AUX returns as well as eight inserts make using out board effects (like reverb, echo, compression, etc, which are not included) a simple matter of plug and play. The advanced matrix style monitor control section, gives the user plenty of options for setting up the proper monitoring environment, for both musicians and the engineer. With sixteen channels the 1642 is a the right mixer for those who want to breakout the parts of their song and mix each section individually.
OUR OPINION
Mackie has a tried and true reputation for making solid products at reasonable prices. As stated earlier, the main benefit of the 1642 over smaller Mackie models is its four-buss system. In creative hands, the busses' uses can go way beyond the scenario described earlier (e.g. sub-grouping compression).
The 1642 has other advantages over smaller models, the four-band EQ gives the user much more control over their sounds. On the channels with parametric EQ the user is not only able to control the volume of the cut/boost curve, but also the frequency that is cut and boosted, a very useful tool for shaping sounds.
Having 10 XDR™ mic pre-amps will enormously benefit those who want to record live bands. This way five pre-amps can be used to boost the drum set's gain levels, while the remaining five can be used for guitar, bass, vocals or whatever configuration you dream up.
As with all Mackie boards the 1642 incorporates the ultra-low noise circuitry that has made them the market leader in compact mixers. While the 1642 isn't as compact as the 1202 it is still small enough to fit in a rack mount and its strong construction and steel chassis make it a great companion for touring.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES
For file management and computer connectivity, the Microtrack is heads above DAT machines (the popular choice for mobile recording). You can record both in WAV (up to 24-bit/96kHz) and MP3 formats (320kbps/48kHz). The Microtrack records onto CompactFlash and Microdrive cards (sold separately), and when plugged into your computer, the Microtrack appears as a hard drive for easy file management. The USB connection also charges the internal lithium battery (power plug also included).
The list of features continues with a large digital screen with an interface similar to the iPod (which can be dimmed for discreet use in dark rooms). There are both RCA and 1/8" outputs for monitoring. Connect the RCA outputs to an amp and use the Microtrack for playback, or plug in the included headphones and use it like an iPod. There are separate left and right level controls with peak indicators, and dedicated buttons for record, hold, play, etc. Extras included: earbuds, t-shaped stereo mini-mic, usb cable, usb power supply, protective carrying case and mic pouch as well as editing software.
OUR OPINION
The MicroTrack is small, easy to use, and most importantly, it seamlessly integrates with your computer. Record your DJ set, save it as an MP3, and publish it on your website; or record a live vocal or sample, save it as a WAV, and use it in your production. And with the version II updates, M-Audio just made a good thing even better. Recommended. -the mgmnt
