MINIAK Virtual Analog Synthesizer with Vocoder
powerful synth with vocoder, sequencer & apreggiator
OVERVIEW
The MINIAK is a powerful performance and production synthesizer with phrase and step sequencing, a built-in drum machine/rhythm sequencer, an arpeggiator, a 40-band vocoder, stereo effects, and a virtual analog synth engine developed in partnership with the world-class Alesis synth team. Amazingly compact and portable, this synth shines on stage as well as in the production studio delivering 24-bit audio resolution and MIDI I/O.
FEATURES
The MINIAK puts up to 8 multi-timbral voices at your fingertips, each with three oscillators. You can create interesting and unique sounds and take advantage of the more-than-600 preset sounds and store up to 1,000 programs in the MINIAK. The synth also has two multi-mode filters, three envelope generators, two LFOs, stereo effects, and a 40-band vocoder. On top of all of this sound-melding power, the MINIAK has a comprehensive sequencer with step and dynamic real time phrase sequencing, a drum machine/rhythm sequencer, and an arpeggiator to aid in creating the landscapes and textures you're after.
Rounding out this complete instrument are high-resolution, 24-bit balanced 1/4" inputs and outputs. The MINIAK has a 37-key semi-weighted keyboard with velocity sensitivity for all-in-one performance. It can also be used as a sound source for MPCs, computer software, and keyboards via MIDI.
SEQUENCING
The MINIAK has extensive sequencing and arpeggiation performance capabilities. Arpeggios and sequences both respond to a key-press by playing a series of notes over a programmed rhythmic pattern. An arpeggio loops over whatever notes you are holding down on the keyboard. If you hold down a chord, the MINIAK will generate a melody by playing each note of your chord individually. A sequence has a melody line built in so you can hold down a single key and the MINIAK will play back that melody relative to that key. Pressing another key will transpose the sequence.
The MINIAK has MPC-style step sequencing and recorder-style dynamic real time phrase sequencing. There's also a drum machine/rhythm sequencer for the built-in drum sounds.
EFFECTS
The MINIAK has a full complement of stereo effects including Chorus, Feedback, Theta Flanger (Phaser + Flanger), Thru Zero Flanger, Super Phaser, Notch Frequency, String Phaser, 40-Band Vocoder, Analysis Gain, Sibilance Boost, Band Shift, Synthesis Input, Analysis Signal In, Analysis Mix, six types of Delay, and three types of Reverbs.
OUR OPINION
The MINIAK appears to be Akai's direct answer to Korg's popular MicroKorg. Both feature virtual analog synth modeling, vocoder and arpeggiator, but the MINIAK takes it one step further with on-board MPC style phrase sequencing and drum machine rhythm sequencer. Add to this a powerful shaping capabilities, a bounty of presets, effects, and 24-bit audio resolution and you have an incredibly versatile synth for under $500. Recommended.

Premium Mini Theremin
Imported straight from Japan (and hard to find anywhere else), this is Gakken's Premium Portable Theremin! For the ultimate in spaced out, spooky synthesizer noises, nothing beats a theremin. You've heard this thing used in movies all the time (especially during the eerie scenes) the theme to Star Trek, The Day The Earth Stood Still, and countless ambient and New Age records. This unique instrument require no-contact from the player and uses 2 antennas to sense your hands position which control the frequency oscillators and volume. It can produce some real alien sounding effects, or can mimic a violin pretty well (with some practice). This particular model features volume trim, master volume, pitch trim, an external output to connect to an amp, its own speaker and is battery operated so you can make music and perform anywhere. Too cool.

How cool is this?! The SX-150 is a fully functional analog synth that you put together yourself (no soldering required) and produces freaky synth action controlled via stylus pen. Um...dope! Control the LFO rate, the pitch, attack, decay, cutoff, all with a built-in speaker, a line out, and even an external source in. A no brainer, especially with the rise in popularity (and price) of vintage synths these days. Runs off 4 AA batteries. Recommended.
*The synth also comes with Gakken's Otona no Kagaku Magazine, an issue fully dedicated to the history of analog synthesizers (125 full color pages, all in Japanese).

Korg
KP3 Kaoss Pad
With its ease of use and versatile set of features, Korg's Kaoss Pad has become a standard DJ tool and the effects unit of choice for live situations. It's fun to use, very responsive, and comes with Korg's reputation for quality. The KP3 overhauls the entire platform, featuring expanded effects (now 128), a new control pad lit by 64 individual LEDs, more sample capability, computer connectivity and more.
FEATURES
The main feature of the Kaoss Pad is its touch-sensitive control surface. Simply touch the surface and you activate the effect; drag your finger and it changes the parameters of your effect. Move it up and down to control one parameter, left and right for another, or even diagonal to control 2 parameters simultaneously. It's so easy to use that you really don't need to know what you're doing at all, and you will be able to master some cool sounds in about 10 seconds. When you do decide to jump into the next level of Kaoss Pad features, there's a ton of to play with in here.
The Kaoss Pad features a whopping 128 effects. Of course there are the essentials like filters, delays, reverb, and flanging, but they've also developed a bunch of new algorithms to give you fresh, untapped sounds from effects like grain shifter, decimator, a vintage analog style filter with a tone-bending drive circuit, and expanded EQs that are controlled directly from the pad. Korg has also included 15 synth sounds, drum rhythms, ethereal ambient sounds, vocoder programs and more. All of which are controllable from the X/Y pad. As for memory, the KP3 can not only store your most popular effects in the program buttons, but it has a hold button for saving the "sweet spot" on certain effects. The Pad Motion program can even memorize and repeat a fluid or complex gesture played on the pad.
The Kaoss Pad features a built-in BPM engine. You can use the Auto BPM function to detect the speed of any input source, adjust the BPM manually, tap in the tempo yourself, or even sync the KP3 to incoming MIDI Clock messages. Eight new BPM patterns can be triggered from the touch pad, allowing rhythm and bass synth patterns to be played, perfectly synchronized to the BPM.
The KP3 now has 4 sampling banks which allow you to play & save both looped and one shot samples. Plug into the KP3's line or mic input and sample up to 16 beats of sound through the 24 bit processor. Run the samples through the effects, just trigger it, or you can process a sound through the effects and then sample it. Use the touch pad to apply time-stretch, reverse-playback, pitch shift, or scratch effects to the samples for unlimited creative possibilities. You can also store these samples on an SD card or transfer to computer with the USB connection.
The KP3 is also a MIDI controller, sending out three controller numbers from the touchpad, and additional messages from the slider. The Sample Bank buttons send and receive note messages. Program Change commands and clock information can also be sent or received. The inclusion of MIDI IN and OUT allows even the most daring and complex KP3 moves to be recorded and played back by an external sequencer or software sequencing program.
A single USB connection allows the KP3 to share sample data with a computer. An editor / librarian program is included so you can build libraries of samples, and edit them using your computer. The software also allows WAV and AIFF files to be loaded into the KP3, and includes pitch correction for samples not created at 48 kHz. This graphic software is valuable not only for editing samples, but also for creating, editing and saving programs and global data. The stereo inputs and outputs can be set so the KP3 can run in-line to an amplification system, or hooked to the effect loop jacks of an audio mixer.
OUR OPINION
The Kaoss Pad was already the best effects unit on the market and a favorite among many working DJs, now the KP3 has come through and just made everything better. It is an excellent effects unit for live DJ sets with its ease of use, hands-on control and countless effects options. Use the sampler to sample your favorite phrases and noises to drop within your sets. At your home studio, the Kaoss pad is excellent for BPMing your records, and adding effects to your mixes. For music production, the Kaoss Pad offers a inexpensive way to further alter your sounds with quality Korg effects. Quite a lot of flexibility with this unit.

Korg
MicroKorg Synthesizer + Vocoder
OVERVIEW
Korg has shaken up the synthesizer market with this amazingly priced, multi-function production tool. The microKorg is both a multi-timbral virtual analog synthesizer and a 4 voice vocoder in one very affordable, portable package.
The synth portion can be used to design analog drums, deep bass, atmospheric keys, weird sound effects and everything in between. It is designed like an analog synthesizer for easy manipulation of the sound, and quick access to the controls.
The vocoder produces a vocal effect that has been used with great results by everyone from Stevie Wonder and Roger Troutman to Dr. Dre and Daft Punk. The same knobs control the vocoder, again giving you quick access and easy manipulation of the sound.
FEATURES
The Synthesizer: The microKorg comes with 128 preset sound sources that can be tweaked infinitely, by patching different effects into the mix. 2 oscillators, plus a noise generator produce the sound on the synth.
The Vocoder: The microKorg comes with a mic, but if you prefer, there are 2-1/4" inputs on the rear to plug in your own microphone or other sound source (drums, keys, etc.). The sound is then grouped with an oscillator, a noise generator and 8 channels of Vocoder to get the desired effect.
Effects: 6 types of arpeggiator are included to extend your sounds. Other effects include the standard filter cut-off and resonance controls, attack and release, and a tempo control as well as LFO's, modulation, delays, EQ and a lot more.
General: The back panel has MIDI in, out and thru, 2 lines of audio in, L/Mono, R and headphone outputs. The keyboard is made up of 37 mini-size keys, with an octave shift control.
OUR OPINION
I have heard and seen (in photos) that the microKorg is the Neptunes secret little weapon. The Vocoder section is extremely helpful in today's electronic based music mediums, especially if you're working with a bad singer. It is easy to use and even easier to manipulate a voice through. Try putting drums or a loop through it, and get something completely different. The Synthesizer section is a bit more complicated. It will take a good bit of reading and playing around to fully understand how your actions are affecting the sounds that are coming out. But the analog style controls let you tweak the sounds easily and hear an immediate difference.
Overall it may take a while to get the full grasp of how the microKorg works. However, once you have a basic understanding, it is an extremely powerful machine with infinite sound synthesis possibilities. On top of that throw in the vocoder, and this becomes one of the best values in the market.

MicroKorg XL Synthesizer + Vocoder
OVERVIEW
The original microkorg was a breakthrough for musicians and synth lovers alike when it came out 5 years ago, enabling everyone to experience a great synthesizer and enjoy Korg's renowned sound at an affordable price. It has remained a constant best-seller and is still very popular. Now Korg has packed even more advanced features as well as a cutting edge sound engine with powerful effects and a beefed up vocoder into the microkorg XL, a great step up from the old microkorg without breaking the bank.
FEATURES
SYNTH
The microkorg XL boasts Korg's powerful RADIAS/R3 derived MMT Multi Modeling Technology for a robust range of sounds and advanced analog re-creations. There are 128 quality presets available right out of the box, which are easily accessed via the two large dials on the front of the unit. The first selects the musical genre, while the second defines the instrument category. For the diehard synthesists and sound designers, you can use the three performance edit knobs for fast, effective editing in performance. Two multi-mode filters, a drive/waveshaping circuit for distinctively distorted sounds, and EG and LFO for creating time-varying tonal change, provide plenty of parameters for serious synthesis. Virtual Patching simulates the patching capability of Korg's classic MS series, and the arpeggiator can run six types of patterns, all adding up to a high degree of creative freedom. There's also an external audio input jack, so you can process external audio material from a sampler or other source device. In the full-edit mode you have unlimited access to all of the microKORG XL's synthesis parameters.
EFFECTS
The two master effect processors were perfected on our KAOSS series. These up-to-the-minute effects go far beyond traditional delay and chorus, delivering a total of 17 powerful algorithms, including ring modulation and a grain shifter. In addition, delay effects can be synchronized to MIDI clock for expanded possibilities in a live performance and other "beat-sensitive" situations.
VOCODER
Using a microphone, the microKORG XL's amazing vocoder allows you to add vocal characteristics to any sound, creating everything from "talk-box" filtering, pseudo choirs, talking instruments and vintage Sci-Fi robots. You can also use another instrument - such as a drum machine - to add rhythmic dexterity to your synth tracks. Our unique Formant Hold allows you to freeze the vocal input for continuous vocoder effects. In addition to simulating the classic vocoder sounds of the past, the microKORG XL also allows you to shift the filter frequencies (Formant Shift function) and adjust the level and pan of each of the sixteen bands, greatly altering the tonal character. This allows you to easily create fascinating textures and sounds that go far beyond traditional vocoding. A gooseneck microphone is included, so you can immediately start using these superb vocoder functions.
OUR OPINION
If you've love the microkorg, but want to step up your synth game, the microkorg XL is the next logical step. You get bigger, bolder, more expressive sounds and effects (especially with the advanced MMT technology)to take your production to the next level. The high quality mic (included) makes for more impressive vocoder action and the effects are stunning. Think of it as the best features from the R3 combined with the ease of use of the microkorg. The beauty of this machine is for the amount of features and endless capabilities, it is still very affordable and can be appreciated by beginners and advanced sound designers alike. Recommended.

There are four main knobs and a 4-way joystick, all of which are assignable and work with just about every software program (64 external templates are provided for easy use with the most popular software synths and production programs). USB connection (cable included) allows you to connect directly to the computer. They also include Editor software for reworking the microX's sounds from your computer- use as a standalone program or as a plug-in with your existing software.
OUR OPINION
The microX continues Korg's tradition of top of the line keyboards, and improves on their more recent entry's into affordable synths and controllers. The fact that you have a synthesizer and controller in one piece is a great thing in itself, but Korg always takes things a step further and has really provided an impressive, useful tool with the microX. Great look with the hard plastic carrying case as well.

Mini-KP Kaoss Pad
The Mini-KP takes the best features of the popular Kaoss Pad and places them in an extremely portable pocket-sized body. 100 effects are available at your fingertips (realtime) including filter, delay, and looper as well as numerous BPM effects that utilize the "TAP/BPM" button to synchronize to your song's tempo. There is also an "FX release" function that offers a natural decay of the effect when changing effects and memory, and memory capabilities. All this in a battery powered unit that is an ideal choice for practice at home, in the studio, or performance in the club.
FEATURES
Just like it's big brother the KP3, the main feature of the Mini-KP is its
touch-sensitive control surface. Everything is done in realtime too, so you will here the effect instantaneously.
The Mini-KP features a total of 100 effects, many derived from the larger KP3, including filter, delay, and a looper. But especially effective for creative mixing is the "low/high-band pass filter" that lets you cut specific frequency ranges of sound (cut the bass out or the highs), the "decimator" that intentionally degrades the audio quality of the input to give unique impact to the sound, a much-requested "delay & reverb" combination effect (for that smooth echoed out mix effect), and the "looper & pitch shifter" that captures and repeats incoming audio, retuning it in real-time as the pad is manipulated. In addition, there are some synth sounds derived from the KP3 and many more effects that can dramatically add to your sound.
Another important feature is the built-in BPM engine. You can use the "TAP/BPM button" to detect the BPM and synchronize the Mini-KP to an audio input source, and then take advantage of the many BPM effects that are synchronized to your song or performance. There's also an "FX RELEASE" function that lets the effect sound decay gradually when you remove your finger from the pad or change effects. This makes it easy for smooth and natural sounding blending of the mini-KP's effects into your performance or mix.
Lastly is the "Hold" function that lets you fix the effect settings at a given moment, and indispensable memory keys that allow you to save your favorite settings. If you're touching the pad to apply an effect, you can use the "Hold" function to "freeze" the effect settings at any desired point. The Memory Key function lets you memorize the selected effect program, the Hold function's on/off status, and the effect depth. This lets you store your favorite effect settings for instant recall anytime.
OUR OPINION
Just like it's bigger brothers, the Mini-KP is an excellent effects unit for live DJ sets with its ease of use, hands-on control and countless effects options. With it's small size and battery operation, you can feel confident bringing it anywhere - from the home studio to the club. In addition, the Mini-KP is excellent for BPMing your records, and adding effects to your mixes. For music production, the Mini-KP offers a inexpensive way to further alter your sounds with quality Korg effects. The Mini-KP is a quality effects unit that is extremely flexibile and extremely portable.

Korg
R3 Synthesizer + Vocoder
OVERVIEW
Korg's R3 is a full featured synthesizer that delivers powerful analog synthesis and advanced sound creation from a compact digital keyboard paired with a high quality vocoder (mic included). The R3 uses the same MMT (multiple modeling technology) sound generator as its big brother the Korg RADIAS giving it thick, bold and crisp analog sounds that will definitely satisfy both beginners and experienced professionals. Its versatile synthesis modeling, ample effects and editing capabilities make it suitable for all types of music from r&b, funk, hip-hop, techno, and house, plus its MIDI I/O and USB connectivity allows it to fully integrate with and grow with your studio.
FEATURES
The R3's top feature is the solid analog synthesis from Korg's MMT (multiple modeling technology) engine. Usually used in much more expensive full size keyboards, this technology delivers full, rich analog sound (via 2 oscillators, 3 envelope generators, 2 LFO filters, + amp and noise generators per voice with 8 voice polyphony) all within the R3's very compact 37 key frame. Unlike many synths this size, the R3 features full size, velocity sensitive keys which makes it much easier to work with (a big complaint about the microKorg is the minikeys) and 2 timbre/8 voice performance power.
In addition to MMT synthesis, the R3 also boasts several features to further shape and tweak your sound. 2 filters with selectable routing are available: Filter 1 is a multi-mode resonant design that lets you continuously vary between various low-pass, high-pass and band reject characteristics. Filter 2 has a switchable, multi-mode resonant design that also includes comb filtering, which can be made to feed back in order to boost multiple series of overtones, giving you amazing potential for generating unique tonal changes. There are also 6 virtual patches available on the R3 that simulate the patch cord functions of older synthesizers (MS and PS series Korgs), a modulation sequencer that can apply time-varying changes to a specific parameter, a 2 band EQ for each timbre with 2 insert effects, and a flexible, editable arpeggiator with 6 different arpeggio patterns built in.
There are a total of 128 preset programs (16 banks x 8 programs) all of which are fully editable and feature a diverse range of sounds from highly complex synths using cross modulation, formant motion and arpeggios, to thick, warm sounds you would expect from analog modeling. The R3 also has 2 external audio input jacks that allow you to process and transform the sound from external audio sources. Create new sounds by playing other instruments and loops through the R3 and using the external audio source as a filter or oscillator.
Also included is a high quality vocoder with 16 channels, adjustable level and pan for each channel, formant shift, formant motion and formant hold functions, MIDI I/O features, USB connectivity and Korg's R3 Editor software to edit and save your programs with your Mac or PC.
OUR OPINION
If you are familiar with the best selling Korg microKorg, think of this as a step up... a BIG step up. The powerful MMT synthesis alone is worth the price of admission, but add to that the full size keys(!), a serious vocoder, MIDI and USB functions and compact portable size and you've got a great addition to your studio set up that won't break the bank. A great synth that is loaded with features you can really get deep with. Recommended.

X50 Synthesizer Keyboard
OVERVIEW
The X50 synthesizer is the latest entry into Korg's smaller keyboard line, built on the same platform as Korg's (much more expensive)Triton series. It employs the acclaimed HI synthesis system for generating all its internal sounds and comes loaded with the over 1000 sounds and programs, flexible effects options, arpeggiators and more.
FEATURES
Korg made its name on being the industry standard for synthesizers, and the X50 lives up to that legacy with a wide range of sounds. It features a huge, impressive battery of built in sounds, with many options for controlling them. It comes pre-loaded with over 1000 built in sounds and programs, some of them Korg "classics" and some created specifically for the microX, with a special emphasis on dance sounds and ethnic timbres. In "combination mode" you are able to combine up to 8 different programs – with 384 combinations already pre-loaded. There are also 89 different effects to choose from, with real time modulation and tempo control available for most of them. A powerful dual polyphonic arpeggiators provide even more possibilities, with 250 pre-loaded patterns ranging from realistic phrases to distinctive flourishes. Korg makes it easy to use this wide array of sounds with great navigation, and quick ways of finding + previewing sounds. For controlling your sound, you also have 4 assignable knobs, 2 switches and "pitch bend" & "mod" wheels. For outputs USB port for directly connecting to your computer and using with software. They also include Editor software for reworking the microX's sounds from your computer- use as a standalone program or as a plug-in with your existing software.
OUR OPINION
With Korg's advanced sound generators, effects and keyboard technology all functioning together, the X50 makes a great choice for a stand alone or studio synthesizer. While the X50 features 61 full sized, velocity-sensitive keys, it's still small & light weight enough to make it portable and an easy choice for both live & studio use

Moog
FreqBox MF-107
OVERVIEW
The Moog MF-107 "Freqbox" is very different from any of the previous Moogerfooger effects boxes (or other effects boxes in general). Rather than simply processing the original input sound, the input signal actually modulates an internal oscillator. This creates totally rich, unique and unusual sounds from any type of signal - guitars, synths, drum machines, vocals, etc.
FEATURES
The "Freqbox" contains a VCO with continuously variable waveshape that can be modulated in the following ways:
- the VCO can be hard synced by the input signal
- the VCO can be frequency modulated (FM) by the input signal
- the VCO frequency can be modulated by an envelope follower which tracks the dynamics of the input signal
- the amplitude of the VCO also tracks the dynamics of the input signal
Hard sync is a classic analog synthesis technique where the start of an oscillator cycle can be reset by another. FM is a technique used to get really rich sounds (from gong or bell-like tones to sizzly sweeps) from simple waveforms. The FreqBox works with any instrument to line-level input. In addition to the panel controls there are control inputs for use with expression pedals or control voltages and control outputs for interconnecting moogerfoogers like you would a modular synth.

Moog
Little Phatty - Stage Edition
OVERVIEW
The Moog name is almost synonymous with word analog synth. The thick, rich sound made from their synths is legendary (used by everybody from Stevie Wonder to Daft Punk), but was never truly affordable to most musicians. Enter the Little Phatty. This synth's sound engine was actually designed by Bob Moog before his passing and combines true analog sound with an accessible price (finally!), plus mulitple interfacing capabilities (including MIDI) to fully integrate the Moog sound into your productions and live performance.
FEATURES
The Little Phatty is a 37-key, true analog synthesizer keyboard with +/- 2 octave traspose and 100 user-editable presets. But don't let the word "little" in it's name fool you. This thing creates a HUGE and brilliant sound via it's 100% analog signal path and true analog synthesis engine designed by Bob Moog himself. The true analog sound is shaped and tweaked via 2 ultra-stable voltage controlled oscillators and one voltage controlled filter with Real Analog Control (RAC), a proprietary technology that allows you to directly interface with the analog circuitry via the knobs on the control panel without any digital processing (which means NO LATENCY whatsoever). The overload control feature adds even more control over the sound for post and pre filter distortion.
In addition, the Little Phatty also features MIDI in/out jacks for full MIDI interfacing capabilites, 3 external CV inputs, external audio input and a universal power supply which accept any line voltage from 90-250V AC, 50-60Hz so you can perform any where in the world.
OPINION
The Little Phatty finally brings Moog's true analog sound home at a reasonable price. The sound it creates is just magnificent and it's clean and simple panel design and look is impeccable. Add MIDI interfacing capabilities and you've got a synth that can you can perform with and can fully integrate and grow with your studio. Highest Recommendation.

MF-104Z Analog Delay
flexible true analog delay
OVERVIEW
The 104Z from Moog Music offers one full second of analog delay time making it the longest standalone analog delay module on the market. Add the unmistakable sound, quality, and flexibility Moog products are known for and you have one of the best analog delays money can buy.
FEATURES
Drive and Output Levels: allow you to set-up the 104Z to match the type of signal you want to delay from low level signals (vocals, guitar) to strong signals (studio console output, drum machine). The 104Z is designed to work with them all.
Delay time: from slightly less than 50 msec to slightly more than 1000 msec.
Mix: Pot Control from completely Dry to completely Wet or anything in between.
Feedback Control: mixes a portion of the delayed signal with the signal from your instrument. Feedback control can generate a single echo, sustaining echoes, or echoes that build up in chaotic ways.
Switchable Internal Loop / External Loop: selects the feedback path. In the Internal Loop position the feedback path goes directly from the output of the delay back to the input. In the External Loop position the feedback path goes through the Loop Out Jack and the Loop In Jack. This gives you an opportunity to insert signal processing in the feedback path, thereby enabling processing of the echoes as they are generated. Very cool with another Moogerfooger (unbelievable with the MuRF).
Loop Gain: controls the signal level which is applied to the Loop In jack when the âExternal Loopâ is on.
Here is a listing of the jack inputs and outputs on the back of this effect:
Inputs:
Audio In
Feedback Amount, Delay Time, and Wet/Dry Mix each of these can be controlled from a Moog Expression Pedal thru individual jacks on the back of the Z.
Outputs:
Mix Out and Delay Out â" the Output Level on the front panel adjusts the levels of the direct and delayed signals that appear at the Mix Out and Delay Out.
Loop In and Loop Out as previously mentioned.
OUR OPINION
If you are in the market for true analog delay, it doesn't get much better than the 104Z. Unless you are going for expensive (and potentially faulty) vintage equipment, the quality and flexibilty of this Moogerfooger is unparalleled. A great way to add that Moog warmth to your productions. Recommended.

MuRF MF-105
OVERVIEW
Moog's legendary Moogerfooger series puts powerful analog effects in the reach of those who may not be able to afford a complete synthesizer. The MuRF offers a sophisticated filtering effect designed to work with guitars, keyboards, samples or any other audio signal you pass through it.
USES
- filter + add effects to any source
FEATURES
The unit comes with eight (8) bands of filter control (8 different frequencies that you can "filter" out of the original sound). Also included is an animation section that allows you to control rate, mix and pattern controls. You can also set a tempo to the pattern you design by tapping on an optional (not included) footswitch.
OUR OPINION
The filter section of the original Moog synths are what the company built their name from, and none of that reputation has been sacrificed for the design of the MuRF. The Moogerfooger series is a great introduction to the world of analog effects. The MuRF is easy to use; yet offers unique, high quality effects that your studio won't outgrow. And lastly if you feel your home studio is just a screen and keyboard, these give your studio the ultimate retro-hands on feel.

OVERVIEW
The ReMOTE SL COMPACT keyboards are the latest USB MIDI controllers from Novation. These controllers are available in both 25 and 49 key versions and are loaded with super-useful features in a very compact and portable frame. In addition to huge LCD screens, semi-weighted keys with aftertouch, a vast array of controls, and large programmable trigger pads, the SL COMPACT controllers also feature Novation's exclusive Automap Universal technology which takes the pain and hassle out of assigning controls for all your programs and plug-ins.
FEATURES
The ReMOTE SL COMPACT features everything you will need in a USB MIDI Controller and then some. It comes equipped with huge 144 character LCD screens (with the essential data laid out logically right before the userâ™s eyes), semi-weighted keys with aftertouch, a vast array of controls (8 rotary, 8 buttons, transport controls), 8 large programmable trigger pads, and assignable pitch and mod wheels. Pioneer
EFX-1000 Effects Module + Interface
OVERVIEW
The EFX-1000 is Pioneer's top of the line effects unit that was designed for both dj use and studio use. The main upgrade here is the high-fidelity, 24-bit/96kHz sound quality achieved by this model (vs. 20 bit/96khz of the EFX-500). Couple that with the digital input/output, MIDI input/output, and accurate input/output meter; and you can integrate the EFX-1000 into any studio setup (whereas most dj effects are geared for strictly dj situations).
USES
- add effects while djing
- add effects in the studio with 20-bit/96kHz sound
- digital I/O
- MIDI I/O
FEATURES
The EFX-1000 retains most of the features that made the EFX-500 one of our favorite effects units. The illuminated controls and knobs are well-placed, and the jog wheel is very useful when adding character to your effects (jog dial actions can also be stored in memory). The EFX-1000 allows you to either effect freely, on-beat (which you can further control to 1/8 to 8/1), or to any rhythm you tap in (a new function). The tap function also serves as a BPM counter.
Effects-wise, the EFX-1000 is the top of the line in the quality of different effects and ways to control them. Effects include: delay, echo, pitch echo, trans, flanger, filter, phaser, jet, wah, phase shifter, ring, and zip; plus voice humanizer and vocoder mic effects. You can isolate a frequency (high, mid, low) to effect; and control wet/dry (intensity of effect), depth, and character, all with separate control knobs.
OUR OPINION
The Pioneer EFX-1000 is the high-end for dj effects units. The only omission is a lack of a sampler, but in its place, the EFX-1000 gives you the most control over your effects. The on-beat BPM mode and new rhythm tap mode are especially useful. And when you are not djing, plug this into your studio setup and get useful digital effects with ultimate hands-on control, digital interface, and MIDI interface, without losing any sound quality. Also expect Pioneer's high quality and durable construction.

Pioneer
EFX-500 Effects Unit
OVERVIEW
Pioneer's EFX-500 has long dominated the DJ effects marker. It is a very solidly built, rugged piece that works well both at live performances and in the studio.
FEATURES
The controls are split 3 different sections on the face of the unit. The first is a high powered isolator. Think of it as super-equalizer. It can completely cut out an EQ channel, better than 90% of the mixers out there. The other 2 parts deal with the effects. One part controls beat effects: delay, echo, pan, flanger, and trans. The other controls the sounds: jet, zip, wah, ring, and fuzz. The true power of this model is how well you can control these effects. The beat effects section (timing effects) includes a beat counter, tap button, bpm controls, and channel selection (allows you to effect high, mid, and lo in any combination). The sound effects are controlled by a spinning jog dial which like the Kaos pad controls the intensity and frequency of the effects. In addition, there are memory capabilities for the jog dial. Take it one step further, and you can use all 3 parts simultaneously or in any combination. For example, isolate a channel, chop the beat in halves, and add a wah effect to it.
Additional features include and auto-bpm counter, a headphone monitor and active read-out (levels, bpms etc) displays. Heavy duty construction quality and Pioneer quality sound.
OUR OPINION
Compared with the Kaoss pad, the EFX-500 feels like a real piece of studio equipment. It is well designed and very solid, and it performs incredibly. For this reason, the EFX is better suited for both DJ and studio usage.

Roland
Juno G 61-Key Synthesizer Keyboard
OVERVIEW
Roland has resurrected their classic Juno line of keyboard workstations and come back with the completely up to date Juno G. The Juno series first gained popularity for it's flexibility, ease of use, and affordability, and for the Juno G, Roland has kept those same facets in mind (plus the cool Juno design scheme) while bringing the whole operation up to speed. This is a fully integrated workstation with multi track recording and sequencing capabilities (16 tracks of MIDI and 4 Audio-In tracks), a wide range sound engine, easy to use interface and controls, and simple methods of connecting with your computer.
FEATURES
With it's 16 track MIDI sequencer, you can basically build an entire track on a Juno G, recording and layering everything with the on-board sequencer: make a drum beat with the wide range of included drum sounds, loop it, add keys, plug in a bass or microphone to record vocals, etc. The setup is very easy to use, walking you through the recording process with features like auto-record (it starts as soon as you start), beat count-ins, a large display screen for the interface, simplified control buttons, and more. In terms of modifying your sound, there is an arpeggiator, chord memory, and 6 built in effects with knob controls: Rate, Pitch, Filter, Amp, Cutoff, and Resonance. All can be applied live or after recording.
The Juno G comes with over 1000 sounds built in (drums, horns, keys, etc), running on the same sound engine and processor as Roland's acclaimed "Fantom-X" series. You can also expand the sound banks with Roland's optional SRX series of sound boards. It comes equipped with 4MB of RAM, which can be expanded to 516MB with standard computer RAM, giving you up to 2 hours of mono or 1 hour of stereo recording time. While it's great that you could construct a track start to finish on the Juno G alone, most people will want to connect to their computer for sequencing and finalization and the Juno G gives you both USB and a PC card slot (SmartMedia, Compact Flash, etc). There is also a MIDI in/out connection, ¼" headphone jack, two ¼" output jacks, two ¼" input jacks and 2 pedal connections. The system comes with Cakewalk Sonar LE software, so you have everything you need to get started.
OUR OPINION
The Juno was one of the coolest synth workstations of the 80s and Roland has done an excellent job in updating this machine for the present day. Most importantly, they have kept the affordability in mind, giving you the same processor and sound engine as the much more expensive Fantom X series (those start at $2000). They've also done a nice job making the Juno G an "all in one" unit without cluttering up the work surface with a million controls and options. This is a powerful, flexible machine that gives you a wealth of options for recording and controlling your sound.

Roland
SH-201 Synthesizer
OVERVIEW
Roland's SH-201 delivers big analog-style sound with a user-friendly front panel great for musicians new to synthesizers and fun for seasoned pros. The keyboard is loaded with the classic Roland sound and features high quality effects (that can be applied to external sources), arpeggiator, D-Beam capabilities and USB connectivity.
FEATURES
The SH-201 features two beefy analog-modeling oscillators onboard, complete with Rolandâ™s famous Supersaw waveform and resonant filter, high-quality delay and reverb effects for adding depth and dimension to the sound, an overdrive control for adding a ripsaw edge, and an arpeggiator for instant rhythmic motion. The SH-201â™s front panel puts every control directly under the playerâ™s fingertips in a logically positioned signal path from left to right. Super easy to understand and friendly to use even for the most novice musician. No hidden menus, no nonsense. Just play and move the knobs and sliders, it doesn't get simpler than that.
In addition, external audio sources can be plugged into the SH-201â™s external input (CD/MP3-player, sampler, etc.) and the sound can be twisted with the front-panel knobs and sliders. Wave your hands over the SH-201â™s invisible D Beam for dramatic modulation without even touching the unit! All this plus USB connectivity so you can tweak and save your patches on your Mac or PC.
