This 12" features a couple tracks they have been killing with at their live shows including a wicked cover of the Giorgio Moroder classic "The Chase(1)" that sounds so identitical to the original I thought it was some kind of re-edit at first. All the arpeggios are their and they hit the synth sounds spot on. The flip features a cover of Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle's "You Love(2)." This time the live drums give it away, but again the synth is right on. The vocalist doesn't hold a torch to Principle, but you can think of it as more of a new disco style homage. Limited pressing. These edits were first premiered on Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space radio show last year (thus the title of the EP) and have finally found their way onto vinyl thanks to the dudes at Rong. The sound is kind of out there, with the main track going for a a lo-fi drum machine, synth, sample chop style ("Yanks Abroad(1)") reminiscent of Malcolm McLaren, the other going for more or a traditional disco style ("Love To Shake It Baby(2)"), and lastly an italo/proto-house style ("Click-Naif(3)"). Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/159/1055/75078.html 6th Borough Project - Miss World EP http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/233/591/81182.html
After killing it with their past couple releases on Jiscomusic and Instruments of Rapture, the 6th Borough Project is at it again with more top notch deep disco house cuts on Delusions of Grandeur. "How Can I Show You(1)" kicks things of on some tasty instrumental slow mo disco for sexy late night groovin'. The sampled loop keeps it smooth and steady so you can hypnotize with the vibe. The Soultourist Mix(2) of "Miss World" on the flip turns the heat up with a driving filtered beat that stays funky with warm synth stabs and deep, bubbling bass to keep the bodies moving all night strong. Also includes to OOFT! Remix(3) of "Miss World" that takes a more dubbed-out minimal electronic approach to the track that hits extra hard on the low end. Fans of Trusme, Linkwood, Mark E, etc. should def check this. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/233/591/81182.html Adam Port - Boogie Bass 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/279/72125.html
Pick. I have never heard of Adam Port (this is his debut release), but I had a special feeling about this record before I even heard the audio sample. My gut was correct as this is the Fresh Sound. On "Boogie Bass(1)," it sounds as if Port went into an underground Parisian jazz club, recorded some samples, came home, rolled a big doob, and then used those samples to create a minimal dance track. Using a Mingus-esque bassline as the foundation, Port slowly reveals the rest of the composition. From there he plays with the different layers, taking them in and out, creating a great hypnotic effect. B-side features the more twisted Boogie Rewind version(2). Recommended. The duo get eerie on Radio Slave's limited run label rocking a two unnamed joints that go to the depths of deep dark side. Pounding beats get attacked by spooky, haunting sounds (like door creeks and wind blowing) on the A- side, while the B-side puts you in a trance with a relentless 1 bar keyloop that goes on and on and on and... till eerie bells and vocals come in to put a spell on you. Bright red vinyl, dumb limited. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/440/81067.html Daniel Wang - The Best of Balihu Records 1993-2008 Pt.1 2LP http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/159/278/79052.html
The Balihu label was way ahead of its time. Wang started the well respected disco-house label back in 1993 with the now classic "Look Ma No Drum Machine" EP, and has kept the quality of the music consistent for well over a decade and a half! An impressive feat to say the least, but the releases really speaks for themselves - tributing to the disco music of the past while adding just the right amount of modern touches to make it work on the dancefloor. This compilation collects the best tracks released during the label's 15+ year existence. All the Wang classics, plus many slept-on sides are on here including "Like Some Dream(1)," "Warped(2)," "East Village Hustle(3)," "The Twirl(4)," "In The Street(5)" (that borrows a sweet synth line from a very famous gangsta rap song!), " and the epic "Let's Go To Mars(6)." Hats off to the guys at Rush Hour for making this amazing compilation happen. 11 tracks total spread over 2LPs with highly detailed liner notes about the creation or inspiration of each track. Highly Recommended. Alison's been trying to find you guys a good pressing of the mid-school Kenny Dope house essential "The Bomb(1)" while I've been looking for the epic Mr. K edit of LTD's "Love To the World(2)" since Plant Life dropped their last single. The Plant Life tune is based around the pinnacle breakdown guitar riff in the LTD soul disco anthem, a section that our dean of editors naturally extends with expertise. "The Bomb," aka "These Sounds Fall Into My Mind," is just an insane rhino trouncing all music around it and squeezing your cheeks back like in those air force test films. Fffwwwah!! Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/147/244/8516.html Mark E - Get Yourself Together / You 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/159/278/82131.html
The debut release on Mark E's own Merc imprint. Seemingly the producer du jour, Mark E drops two keepers for your new disco sets. "Get Yourself Together(1)" harks back to early Environ records with a crisp drum machine beat, Larry Heard-style bass synths, and those 70s era space sound effects. "You(2)" has much more of a disco edit sound with purposely heavy looping and a super-interesting, semi-abrupt shift a little more than half into it. Unusual quality as usual, recommended. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/159/278/82131.html Moxie - We Just Do Not Know 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/147/423/76883.html
Strange one from the vaults of the Moxie back catalog. This is number 11 from the Norwegian label originally released in 2007 and is certainly one of their darker volumes. The A-side is taken by "Can The Future Be Remembered?(1)," a spaced-out creeper with all sorts of wonky synth weirdness that'll appeal to dark side disco freaks. Sounds like a dosed-up version of the Bladerunner soundtrack or something from Liquid Sky. If you liked that, check the edit of Amin- Peck's italo-disco oddity that gets an edit on the B-side called "Me On Girl(2)" and ex-Tangerine Dreamer Peter Braumann's "The Third Site" that gets spliced up into "11 Miles from Bloxham(3)." Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/147/423/76883.html M.S.K. - Lunar (Das Glow) 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/733/1265/44417.html
Smash on, my fellow electro heads! This new one from Institubes artist MSK features their new single "Lunar," along with the "Side Story," a dark warehouse electro noise grinder that's sure to have fans breaking their bodies. "Lunar(1)" is a square bass, vocal chop, monster of a track. The first half is all build up, but then in the middle, that's where the vocal chops come in hypnotizing you with a wave of tones until the beat drops. The "Lunar Edit" is the short attention version bringing the vocal build up closer to the front for a quicker climax. The intro to "Side Story(2)" is more along what I like. A funky electro house slap bass loop, until it reaches pandemonium with heavy square bass hits and intricate layering. If you think that's crazy, check the Das Glow Remix(3) for the heaviness. Those faint of heart, take caution. This is noise electro turned up to 10. I know Minimal Man will hate this, but fans of Boys Noise, ZZT and Puzique will love it. Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/733/1265/44417.html Newworldaquarium - The Force (Ame Remix) 10" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/233/591/81057.html
Ame's remix of "The Force(1)" is unexpected. It sounds like a cut you'd find on a late nineties downtempo record. It's a bit breaky and its got that dark club vibe (thinking DJ Shadow-era UNKLE). Whatever the case, it sounds fresh, and the great 10" packaging only adds to the appeal. B-side features the Alternative Version(2), a beat-less soundscape style track. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/233/591/81057.html PG&S - Motorik (Professor Genius, Speculator) EP http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/1839/80110.html
PG&S is a collaboration from Professor Genius (Italians Do It Better, Bim Marx) and Speculator (Galaxy Toobin', Grackle) on the newly formed Greek label, Echovolt Records. If you know anything about these two guys, you know they love synths! Their debut EP Motorik is like a journey through vast cosmic synthscapes, where you can totally get lost in the waves of intricate sequences, modulations and arpeggios. Listen to the epic "Jive(1)," or the adventurous double- time drive of the title track(2) for a taste. The EP also includes solo tracks from each artist including Speculators cosmic italo tune "Lucky(3)" and Professor Genius' upbeat "Heaven Sent(4)." One for all the synth heads and space cadets out there. Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/1839/80110.html Soft Rocks - Leave Your Earth Behind 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/233/591/81066.html
UK's Soft Rocks have been churning out all sorts of balearic disco goodies for awhile now (including top notch edits), but their latest release on Redux is a little bit different. Though still rooted in the cosmic balearic side of things "Leave Your Earth Behind(1)" has a funky electronic flair to it thanks to wicked bass and snappy drums that chug along. The airy synths and live guitar work keep it out- there enough for all the space cadets and beardo freaks while the Roots Unit remix(2) on the flip pumps it up with old school Chicago style drums for a unique "jackin' balearic" sound. Roots Units' "Good Bye Earth Mix(3)" gives the 12" a nice and mellow landing on some super chill-out slo-motion disco. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/233/591/81066.html Sygaire - Mono:Poly EP http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/149/249/81071.html
Sygaire, whom we first encountered on Raw Fusion and Melting Pot Music, pops up on the Room With A View imprint with his future breakbeat style. His sound is truly unique as it mixes beathead and dance aesthetics to a perfect balance. Check "Mono:Poly(1)" with its uptempo breaks and head nod-inducing bass burps. "The Time Is Now(2)" is equally intriguing, as Sygaire mixes underground soul jazz of the 70s with minimal house. B-side features a minimal house / future disco remix of "Mono" by Marlow, which is pretty spectacular in itself. Recommended. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/149/249/81071.html
