They've come a long way and with their wave of new releases of Hercules & Love Affair and Syclops, it's safe to say that trust is secured. This one's for the fans. fit: slim, American Aparrel body fabric: 100% cotton Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/clothing/279/783/50388.html Theo Parrish - Parallel Dimensions CD http://www.turntablelab.com//175/403/1752.html
Originally released in a limited CD-only pressing of 1,000 copies back in 2000, Parallel Dimensions seemed doomed to be a much talked-about but seldom-heard underground classic. Thankfully the folks at Ubiquity have collaborated with Parrish on this very welcome reissue (and first ever vinyl pressing) of an album that is one of the masterpieces of house music and beyond. At the risk of sounding pretentious, terms like "post-house" spring to mind when trying to describe the brilliance contained herein. The first comparison I thought of while listening was Thelonious Monk - specifically the way Monk's dense compositions give the sense of a musician thinking in real time. Parrish is constantly introducing and tinkering with the loops, sounds and themes here, using his sampler to not only emphasize repetition, but also difference, continually heightening the listener's perception of what they are hearing. While this is complex music, it's most definitely not oblique. Parrish's sonic palate is firmly rooted in both the abstract, electronic aesthetic of early Chicago house as well its more "organic" antecedents in disco, plus there's also a healthy dose of jazz thrown into the mix, making for an altogether inviting sound for the uninitiated listener. From the initial hard-bop-horn-stab sample of the stunning opener "So Now What(1)," to the sublime "Anansie's Dance(2)" which begins with a clustered group of whispering voices that somehow take form as chugging beat (suggesting a less-clinical Herbert), not a single sound on this album seems obtrusive or forced. Listening to tracks like the shimmering "Space Ghosts(3)" and the haunting, vocal-driven soul of "Summertime Is Here(4)," (which recalls a minimalist take on Miles Davis' Quiet Nights LP), one simply has a sense of awe and wonder at the very existence of this supremely unique music. This is not necessarily music for the dancefloor, but when it's this beautiful, frankly, who cares. Highest recommendation. Nine tracks in all. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com//175/403/1752.html Michael Jackson - I Am Love / The Lady In My Life 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73614.html
One of the silver linings of MJ's recent passing is that everybody really got into some of the man's more obscure tracks. Sure, "Billie Jean" was the most played song last week, but for the whole of that weird weekend you could turn on the radio and hear any selection of the man's more obscure album cuts and joints from back in the day. With some supremely eerie timing, Slow To Speak has compiled two of those lesser known MJ tracks here on this 12". Side A features "The Lady In My Life(1)," originally released on Thriller, while the flip features The Jacksons' "I Am Love(2)," taken from Dancing Machine. Just like every other Slow To Speak release, this one is very limited and the cover is silk screened and very snazzy looking. Recommended. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73614.html Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit / Come As You Are 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73615.html
Two big tracks that you already know and love, provided you weren't born in this millennium. "Smells Like Teen Spirit(1)" and "Come As You Are" were both monsters from Nevermind, but Slow To Speak always likes to throw a curve ball, so on this 12" they've also added the MTV Unplugged version of "Lake Of Fire(3)" as the meat in this grunge sandwich. The silk screened sleeve is just a cherry on top. Limited edition, plays at 45. Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73615.html Bob Sinclar - I Feel For You (Axwell) 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73392.html
Get out the tanning oil and break open the red bullz. This 2007 remix from Axwell re-cemented mainstream anthem status for Bob Sinclar's "I Feel For You." Huge song got huger. Dub version(2) on the flip. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73392.html Bob Sinclar - Meu Carnaval 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/158/276/29339.html
Bob Sinclar makes music for the people. He's not afraid of being slightly cheesy and he pulls out every trick in the book. On this Brazilian-inspired dance track, "Meu Carnaval(1)," Sinclar inserts multiple crowd moving techniques: Batucada percussion, Dubsided-lite zip sounds and horns, a guitar breakdown, crowd noise, and Seu Jorge type vocals (actually it's Rolando Faria). Flip features an effective Dub Version(2) that replaces the vocals with anthemic horns. Easy pickings. Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/158/276/29339.html Bob Sinclar - World, Hold On (feat. Steve Edwards) 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73390.html
Arguably the biggest dance hit of 06-07, "World Hold On(1)" still has that anthemic quality... perfect for summer BBQs, boat parties, and sunsets. Everyone knows this song. Includes club mix and extended club mix. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73390.html Trademarq - Broken Wagon Remixes (Derrick Carter, Marko Militano) 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/72984.html
"Broken Wagon" with its line of "if its broken u can fix it but you've got to have good credit" was a prophecy of the current credit crunch (the song was created before the crash). Here, the Trademarq duo updates the idea with the all-star remix single with reworks by Derrick Carter(1), the group's own Marko Militano(2), Bon Johnson(3), and The Bald & The Beautiful(4). Derrick and Marko's mixes are especially good. Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/72984.html Joshua Iz - Juice 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/72980.html
Joshua knows how to build house tracks right. "Juice(1)" is stormer from the onset, but Joshua manipulates it so the energy only increases. That sinister bassline is the main weapon, but you'll also get the crowd with the sporadic "What The Fuck Is Juice" samples from Dave Chappelle. If you can't get enough of that bassline, go for the DJ Tool version(2) that goes straight into the meat of the track. No filler here either, as b-side "Shiz(3)" is a great techno-ish house track with a bit of jazz. Again, notice the professional build-up, it sneaks up on you. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/72980.html Africanism - Takemussa (Soha, DJ Gregory, Julien Jabre) 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73389.html
2002 release from the massive Africanism crew (something like 20 of the biggest dance producers). "Takemussa(1)" was produced by Soha aka the duo of DJ Gregory and Julien Jabre. It features a huge afro-house sound marked by that hypnotic eastern sounding synthesizer section. People get primordial and sweaty to this. Includes a synthesizer-less dub mix(2), and a spooky as hell Reprise(3), which sounds like an outtro for a indy nuclear holocaust flick. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73389.html Africanism - Voices (KC Flightt) 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/440/9473.html
Latest in Yellow's Africanism series. In this issue, Bob Sinclair revisits the house classic "Voices" by KC Flight. If you don't know about the original, it's time to brush up on your house history. Arguably the genre-defining tribal house track, "Voices" also features one of the most recognizable choruses in house history. But most of all, it's the movement of the track (the journey effect) that really warrants the abused "classic" title. A rather ominous task to remake it, but using original KC Flightt raps and a taught adherence to the original structure, Sinclair has done an admirable job. Much like when Kenny Dope approaches a classic, Sinclair uses restorer-like approach, utilizing modern studio techniques to recreate the instrumentation (giving it more of a polished sound) without overdoing it. For those who never liked the KC Flight rap, you also get the handy dub version on the flip. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/440/9473.html Bob Marley & The Wailers - Rebel Music (Bill Laswell Remix) 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73613.html
Slow To Speak continue to re-educate our burnt ears with three tracks from the Bob Marley catalog. Here's what they have to say: "The music of Bob Marley & has suffered some of the worst fans in musical history, truly! I can think of no better example of good music that has been wholly distorted, contextually decimated & stripped of any original ingenuity & intelligence than Marley’s catalog." Wow. On the a-side you get a Bill Laswell dub version of "Rebel Music(1)," while on the flip there's the original versions of "Them Belly Full(2)" (such wicked instrumentation) and the Bob standard "Natural Mystic(3)." Recommended. The Chicago native was responsible for bringing us the classic tracks "Land Of Confusion" and "100% Disin' U," but also produced a plethora of lesser known joints, many of which ge shine on this compilation. Check the rawness on "Don't Stop," "Turn My Shit Up," "Ecstasy," "Pleasure Dome," "Simple Minded" and "Morse Code." This is some hard hittin', dirty warehouse shit for sure. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73619.html Joey Beltram - Trax Classix Digi-LP http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73670.html
Not for the faint of heart! Beltram goes hard when it comes to the acid techno stuff, and this collection takes it to the limit on some four on the floor, 303 + 909, lose your shit steez. Many of these tracks are from the early 90's when the hardcore techno scene was just emerging and Beltram dropped the Dance Generator LP on Trax. If you like your acid hard, this is for you. Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73670.html Various Artists - Phuture And Other Classics From DJ Pierre Digi-LP http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73760.html
As an integral part of the early Chicago acid house scene, DJ Pierre released numerous classics and anthems under his own name and several aliases. Under the Phuture moniker Pierre released "Your Only Friend" one of the genre's all-time classics. With the ominous voice saying "This is cocaine speaking..." the track sets of on a dark, jacking trek to the depths of underground life. Under the name Phortune, Pierre jacks it up on "Can You Feel The Bass?" and even gets uplifting with "String Free" a huge piano-driven acid track, while Pierre Pfantasy Club gives us deep vocal house tracks like "Dream Girl." An excellent collection of classics from a visionary and versatile producer. I know there've been a lot of Chicago house comps on the site recently (that throw the term "classic" around loosely), but if you're new to the genre or just want the real big classics, check this release out. Every track on here is an anthem and any house head will know the words (if any) to them. Not gonna go into detail about each track, just know these are pretty much essential in your old school classic house crates. Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73721.html Alexander Technique - Rock U (Princess Superstar) Digi-12 http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73817.html
Princess Superstar returns to drop verses on the latest hype jawn from Alexander Technique. "Rock U" combines a bmore-ish bounce with a little wobble bass, some rave stabs, and of course Princess Superstar's Missy-esque raps to turn the party out. More than a couple remixes here change up the style, but Chewy Chocolate Cookies disco house version, Drikt Freddie's hyped up version and Mom & Dad's minimal version are the ones you wanna hear. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73817.html Dre Skull - I Want You (Bobmo, AC Slater) Digi-EP http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73796.html
Dre Skull is on fire right now. Fresh off the heels of his collab with Sizzla(!), Mr. Skull throws a curve ball atcha with the uber-catchy synth pop grooves of "I Want You." Hires put it best saying it sounds like a lost Ciara demo what with the smooth female vocals and weird electronic beat, but it also kind of reminds of jams like "My Boo" and "Time After Time" crossed with the Human League. That baby robot voice might sound creepy at first, but trust me it grows on you (or will at least get stuck in your head!). Brooklyn's AC Slater and French young buck Bobmo gives it the hype treatment to make the kids lose their shit on the dancefloor, but I'm with Dre's remix of himself that gives the track a sort of slight jack feel. Awesome cover art by Taadaki Mori seals the deal. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/daily/632/2282/73796.html
