Staple kills the entire pigeon motif with this one. Not only is the illustration on the front the most handsome pigeon ever, check the back detail for the realistic turd drop! By the late 70s, they were already dancing at groundbreaking clubs like The Sanctuary, Salvation I & II, the spectacle at Studio 54 and the legendary Loft parties. But what about the rest of America? I'm talking about Georgia, Illinois, Baltimore, Ohio, Detroit, etc. These were places that felt the outside musical pressure of NY's glossy disco and modern funk that hit the industry nationwide. Unwilling to compromise their own soul and vision, the result was a hybrid sound that fused a disco music with the good ol' traditions of funk, soul, r&b and jazz. This special CD compilation is dedicated to the unsung heroes of that era. You may have heard of Tony Cook & The Party People's dancefloor hit "On The Floor," now check out his earlier disco boogie funk on "Get To The Point(1)." Also check the soulful boogie sounds of Detroit's Destiny In Time Band's "You Bring Out The Best In Me(2)," the funky soul disco on Chicago's Lonnie Givens' "Heat Is On(3)," Greyship Davis' extremely funked out number "Get Up Get Down And Let Your Body Pop(4)," and the proto-house sounds of Fabulous Kings' "If You Like What We're Doing(5). " All the selections are still fresh for today's tastes, extremely rare to find in the field, and years ahead of their time. Honestly I would link all of these, but I'll leave some surprises for you. Two CDs beautifully packaged in a glossy three panel digipak, one mixed by Jerome Derradji and the second giving you all the UNMIXED versions. Also includes a booklet with a brief history and bios for all the artists. I'd like to personally thank BBE for making this comp and to the original artists that persevered the funk in the face of adversity. Recommended. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/cds/170/326/45410.html V/A - Funky Nassau: The Compass Point Story 1980-1986 CD http://www.turntablelab.com/cds/185/400/45409.html
The latest compilation from Strut takes you on a musical journey of the Compass Point Studios circa 1980-1986. If you've never heard of the studio, you've definitely grooved to their recordings or heard them on the radio. Grace Jones' "My Jamaican Guy(1)," Tom Tom Club's "Genius Of Love(2)," or Talking Heads' "Born Under Punches(3)?" They're all milestones in Compass Point's illustrious history. Based in the Nassau Islands of the Bahamas, the studio was run by Chris Blackwell, who had an exciting new vision for music. It was a hybrid of everything from reggae to funk, new wave to disco. The backbone of this movement was all in the studio band, for which Blackwell hand-picked the players. Pop musicians from Paris, musical talent from NY, and key Jamaican players such as the famous rhythm duo of Sly & Robbie were all enlisted into Blackwell's new dream team. In the relaxed atmosphere in the Bahamas, away from the hustle and noise of the city, the studio provided freedom for experimentation, which was essential to its success. Check the dubby disco house sounds on the Larry Levan Mix of Gwen Guthrie's "Padlock(4)," Sly & Robbie's dubby version of the Yarbrough & People's hit "Don't Stop The Music(5)," Ian Dury's new wave disco jam "Spasticus Autisticus(6)," Francois K's mix of Set The Tone's electro funk heater "Dance Sucka(7)" and the new wave reggae sounds of Chaz Jankel's "Whisper(8)." Pretty much every song on here is modern for today's dancefloors (Chas Jankel just had a release on Tirk with a Hercules & Love Affair remix) and deserves to be played out. Comes in a glossy three panel digipak complete with booklet and bio written David Katz, author of People Funny Boy: The Genus of Lee Scratch Perry. Recommended. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/cds/185/400/45409.html DJ Harvey - Close To The Edit, Pt.1 CD http://www.turntablelab.com/cds/170/399/16317.html
Harvey is at the point in his career where basically anything he puts out sells really well because in essence Harvey equals quality. This CD is no exception except for the fact, like other artists/DJs, he hasn't started slacking but has actually stepped his game up. And you know as far as postmodernism and this whole new and confused disco era goes this CD fits pretty well within its realm. I'm not going to sugar coat anything and throw out sub genre names or anything I'm just going to throw out the blanket "disco" label for all of the tracks on here. Blanket statements keep me warm. This is an unmixed CD of disco edits ready to be encoded and dropped right into Serato. Let's not front, you and I both know that it takes time to dig for good stuff that nobody else has, pay the price for whatever quality they come in, clean your records good enough for the encode, encode, and then edit them to your pleasing. I really can't stress hard enough how great releases like this are. In all seriousness, if you like congas and cowbells you'll like most all of these tracks. Check out Juicy Sushi (1) and Get Ready (2) (there is also a reprise mix on here for Get Ready that also bangs if used correctly). This is some pretty classy dance music. This isn't some get some college school kids to try and dance shit (use DFA and Justin Timberlake for a better result), this is more like drinking wine and grinding on an older woman type shit. I'm not sure if you're with me on this one or not. Girls my age are so retarded. They no nothing about music, art, or can even hold a decent conversation about nothing. Grinding on women in their mid thirties is like me new favorite thing to do. I'm not buying them drinks; they're buying me drinks. I don't really know how I got on to this subject but I say f**k it. I do what I want. Also check out Shine On (3), C is for Charlie (4), and Here and Now (5). All banging edits for the grown crowd. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/cds/170/399/16317.html Bill Withers / Anita Baker - K2 Edits, Vol.4 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/446/43479.html
Summertime house heat. Baltimore's DJ Karizma is responsible for this 4th volume of K2 edits which features the money remix(1) of Bill Withers "Lovely Day." Sure it's just a boompty-boomp 4x4 kit under the time-stretched original, but damn it works good! Break this out at the right moment and watch the magic happen. Flipside features another soulful house rework(2) of Anita Baker's "Mystery" that hits wit a similar effect. This one's a sleeper since the A-side wins for sure. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/446/43479.html Ron Hardy - Muzic Box Classics, Vol.2 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/279/44619.html
Let me say this right now, Ron Hardy is the motherfucking man. Screw your disco re-edits that take out the best parts and extend the instrumental breaks - these edits were made close to 20 years ago on a funkin' reel to reel and I'll play these out any day. In fact, I can't wait to play these edits out. It's one of the true joys of DJing. At the opportune moment, it could raise the club to levels of hysteria (I've seen this happen many times). This is volume two in this sacred series and features the hard jacking sounds of Sleazy D's "Trust Track(1)" and Steve "Silk" Hurley's "I Can't Turn Around(2)," which later became JM Silk's "I Can't Turn Around." Both are huge with massive percussion and bass. I would go further into the legendary history of this key figure of dance music, buuuut we only got a couple copies and if you really cared, you'd trust a book rather than this blurb. See the smiling face on the label? If you made an edit as banging as this, you'd be smiling like that too. Recommended. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/279/44619.html V/A - Lost Tracks From Detroit EP http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/443/43394.html
Love For Music is back with three tracks of Detroit house business for your ears. The Godson (aka Rick Wilhite of 3 Chairs) is first up with the best cut on here, "Can You Feel Me?(1)" It's a dark, moody and pulsing electronic affair with that unmistakable Detroit sound we all love. Spaced out vocals exclaiming "I can feel it" add to the overall eerie sound Wilhite produces here. Next up, Detroit newbie DJ Marquis delivers "Head Over Heels(2)," a strong vocal track with warm keys and soulful vocals. Last up, TJ Dumas, one of the creators of the infamous Detroit Beatdown crew (drool), produces a track that uses a very well known disco tune, but Dumas injects his Detroit sensibility into it, creating his own version of disco which I am eating up. Grab it. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/443/43394.html Mighty Dub Katz - Just Another Groove (Tocadisco & Ashley Beedle Remixes) 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/159/278/40745.html
I love it. These reissues / remixes of mid-nineties dance hits are the perfect foil for the minimal techno trend that's going on these days. "It's Just Another Groove" aka "I Think We Should Get Back Together" was a huge 1995 happy house hit from the Mighty Dub Katz (aka Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim). This is the kind of shit you play in between "The Bomb" and "Around The World" to make the crowd jizz on each other. That's right, jizz. Listening to the 2008 remastered version(1), it sounds as fresh as ever, can't wait to hear this shit in the club again. Awesome remix selections too. Ashley Beedle(2) turns in a re-edit style remix, adding some rousing tribal sections to the original. Tocadisco(3) does a brilliant recontextualization by chopping up the original's vocal and adding modern synth work. Recommended. Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/159/278/40745.html Phantom Slasher - Blow Me Slow (Idjut Boys) 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/159/278/40748.html
Limited to only 1000 copies! New killer disco re-edits by Phantom Slasher off Idjut Boy's Noid Label. Many of the Noid releases have been known to go for bank after they sell out and by the sound of this one, it seems it'll follow suit. A Side(1) is an edit of Hot R.S.'s "Slow Blow" and the B-Side(2) is an edit of Barrabas' "Woman." Both are extended deep funky disco that'll get the party feeling saucy. Super recommended. Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/159/278/40748.html Herve - Cheap Thrills (Count of Monte Cristal Remix) 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/444/41796.html
Woah, they actually cleared the "Thriller" sample? Guess that's what happens when Ministry of Sound is licensing your shit. This is the Data Records promo repress of Herve's massive single from last year, originally released on Dubsided but now sporting a spiffy new Count of Monte Cristal remix. (Yes, that's Herve remixing himself remixing Michael Jackson.) In true Dubsided style, "Cheap Thrills(1)" is 90% dirty, buzzing bassline and 10% ultra-catchy sample; when the two meet towards the end of the track and Herve starts freaking those synths, it's lights out. The Count's remix(2) takes it even further via gated, pulsing bass, yelping vocal snips and a Bmore tempo breakdown. Plays at 45. Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/160/444/41796.html Diesel & Jarvis - Malinga 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/147/244/41551.html
Believe it or not, this is the first Moton Records release we've carried. Moton is one of the most respected re-edits series, home to early Harvey works and countless trend-setting selections. The series dates back to the nineties with this new one being their 24th release. As usual, the details are pretty skimpy, but the first edit, "Malinga(1)", is credited to Diesel & Jarvis. Apparently the original is a rarity from the French afrobeat scene. B-side opener, "Mr. Wong(2)," is a magical delight, really. Really. Where did this come from? Did they make more music like this: loud slap bass, new wave synths, dub effects, additional percussion, lovely guitar chords, italo vocals, children choir vocals singing "Mr. Wong," laser sounds? No exaggeration. This is something special, it might be the hottest edit I've ever heard. Inevitably, after the heights of the "Wrong", the otherwise awesome "Black Women(3)" brings us back down to earth. Recommended. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/147/244/41551.html Fantasy / Brazilian Rhyme 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/147/422/44869.html
Two EWF staples back to back on the same 12". "Brazillian Rhyme(1)" needs no explanation - you all know this one. it appears here in a shortened interlude version (could've done with an extended version, but it's better than nothing). You also get "Fantasy(2)" in all its burning, soulful glory. This one is on some straight wedding crate status - real grown and lovely. Listen to this with your breezy on a yacht while sippin' on somethin' at sunset like a boss. Never seen this configuration of tracks on a 12" but at least the Columbia labels look pretty official. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/147/422/44869.html Barrabas - Woman / Wild Safari 12" http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/147/421/44870.html
Hardly do I come across records that go for G's. Hundreds sure, but over a thousand? Those are few and far between. This 12" right here is a repress of one of those "G" records. The original 70's red vinyl pressing currently goes for about 1200 Euros or 2 G's! Damn that's a lot for a piece of plastic. But record nerdery aside, "Woman(1)" is truly a NY classic and a breaker's anthem for sure. If you read the blurb from the more bootleg-looking copy on the site you'll also know that this was one of Little Louis Vega's favorite jams of ALL time. You know that cat has listened to A LOT of music so that's saying something. This repress features the original 12" configuration with "Wild Safari(2)" on the flip and official looking RCA/Vicor labels (much more believable than the purple label joint we also carry). Arrived Today http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/147/421/44870.html Young MC - Bust A Move Remixes (Diplo + Don Rimini) Digi-12 http://www.turntablelab.com/digital/405/1721/45563.html
Following the popular Bmore club versions of Masta Ace and Young MC classics from Lacrate & Samir, Delicious Vinyl has enlisted more top names to update the immortal "Bust A Move." Highly touted Parisian prodigy Don Rimini leads the charge with his aptly named "Ravekid" remixes - one's extended for maximum mixability, the other cuts to the point (and those nasty key stabs) a little quicker. Diplo's version makes good use of the "yoooou wannit... yoooou got it..." bit as the dino drops every manner of bare breakbeat underneath for a real gritty stripped down feel. Also includes the Diplo instrumental, plus a cool Chopped & Screwed remix of Young MC's "Slowest Rhyme" from LA's Bobby Birdman. Arrived Yesterday http://www.turntablelab.com/digital/405/1721/45563.html In Flagranti - Additional Alpha Blocker / Effective Placebo Affect Digi-12 http://www.turntablelab.com/digital/425/1745/45691.html
I always get psyched when I see In Flagranti's name on the Daily. Been a fan of them ever since their wave of retro-porn dirty disco singles last year and have been watching their style develop like a fine wine. From their Italo disco collab with Black Devil Disco to their dirty house team-up with Sex Schon, they're quickly becoming known as some of the most versatile dance producers out there. Every release is a pleasant surprise, because although they keep experimenting, it's always quality. I got "Additonal Alpha Blocker" a couple weeks ago and am still bumping it in the 'Pod. It starts like a long disco house intro, then busts into a mesmerizing synth hook over garage-house-like basslines to keep you dancing into the night. "Effective Placebo Affect" keeps the disco-house groove going, with a synth bassline that's ultimately Italo. If you're a fan you might be thrown off at first, asking "where's the attitude and the punky girl vocals?" Don't worry, the rawness is still there, you just might take a while realizing it. Recommended. This former House 2 House member (Strictly Rhythm act that produced "Hypnotize Me" and other hits) has updated his sound, nestling into that NYC soft spot of disco, house, and new wave. "Ever After Hours" is the immediate burner here. It starts off all old school Chicago house and techno, but eventually morphs into a dark disco track. Complex, yes. I am also really digging "Did I Hear Movement," a throwback new wave instrumental that conjures images of New Order jam sessions. Lastly, check "The Yes and No," a balearic meets no-wave type midtempo-ish track. This single is getting played by In Flagranti, Ilija Rudman, Dennis Kane, and a bunch of other underground disco heads. If you're into Metro Area, Baby Oliver, Baby Talk, the recent run of DFA 12"s or the like, you'll be all over "Gazed" with its driving disco-train drums, spaced-out, bubbling synths and pulsing bass. Can't go wrong with "Hush No Rush" either - tough beats, thick bass synths, and a bit of arpeggiation over the top make for a hot blend of disco-boogie, Italo and garage house vibes. Also features the "Broken Dealer Russian Hush Mix" of "Hush No Rush" that turns the Italo-Euro level up a few notches. "What Is House" is a true acid house track the way they used to be done. It's got sick 303 action, stark old school beats, and sinister vocals commanding you to move and dance with "her" (aka house music). As you already know, Heard is equally well-known for his lush vocal cuts. "Dreaming of Better Days" is one of those beautiful songs, a slow jam with stunning keys, jazzy horn work, and smooth male vocals. He's one of those legendary producers whose prolific career has reached out to so many genres of dance and electronic music. This is his 2004 release, and although my favorite stuff from him is in the late 80's with Fingers Inc. and Mr. Fingers, these are quite the exception. Check the smooth soulful balearic house sounds of the title track "When Summer Comes" the monstrous bass bouncing on "Acid Bounce" and "Transmission X." A lot harder than his usual stuff, but still signature Heard. The dub mix here features tons of Heard's beautiful, meandering synths, as well as dubbed-out vocal bits. Also includes the shortened version of the club mix. Arrived Last Week http://www.turntablelab.com/digital/425/1745/45682.html Strong Souls - Original Ground / Sensual Digi-12 http://www.turntablelab.com/digital/425/1745/45700.html
Going way back here to 1993, "Strong Souls" was originally released on Black Market International. It's a lost (and secret) Detroit house classic produced by Larry Heard that oozes with the early 90s sound, complete with those house keys we're all rediscovering. "Sensual Sound" is another one of my old school favorites. It's as sensual as house can be, with sexy female spoken word laid on top of Heard's deep bass and strange synths.
