Remember a few years back when everyone was freaking out over the artists that constructed thousands of fabric-covered "gates" in Central Park? Those artists were Christo & Jeanne-Claude, and this exhaustive 3DVD box set from Plexifilm documents the first 20 years of...   expand review  the married couple's career (1974-1995), featuring even more impressive exploits, all seen through the keen lens of the Maysles Brothers (Gimme Shelter, Grey Gardens). The pair are "environmental artists" who take on massive scale art projects (almost always involving nature and fabric) which they finance themselves and leave standing for only a short time - you've really got to see these things to get the full impact of what these people do. Disc 1 starts with Christo's 1974 draping of a massive orange curtain between two mountains in Colorado ("Christo's Valley Curtain"), as well as their 1978 effort to build a 24 mile long / 18 foot high fence of white fabric across the hills of Northern California ("Running Fence"). Disc 2 features Christo & Jeanne-Claude's 1986 attempt to surround eleven islands in Biscayne Bay with 6.5 million square feet of bright pink fabric ("Islands") as well as "Christo In Paris," where, in 1990, they wrapped the Pont Neuf bridge over the Seine in Paris. Disc 3 features "Umbrellas" - you've just gotta see that one for yourself. Not only are the couple's stunts impressive, but these films are extremely well made and Plexifilm has put a great package together here with bonus interviews, audio commentaries, a full-color slipcase and (best of all) an 82-page booklet with amazing exclusive photos, essays and project histories. Famed 2001 documentary now released on DVD. This documentary helped fuel the mullet craze a few years back, but it has lasted the test of time because it championed the mullet rather than sensationalizing it. The filmmakers shot the documentary with a...   expand review  minimalist approach, letting the subjects speak freely about their mullets and their mullet stories; the straight forward images conveying much more than catchy graphics, voice-overs, or edits. Everyone knows Pharrell can't skate, but that doesn't mean dude doesn't have enough pull to go hire a team of skaters and send them touring around the world! East coast, West coast, Midwest, Japan, Spain - all ripping the hot street skate...   expand review  spots in fresh krispy BAPEsters. Honestly, I grew up skating looking up to Hawk & Jason Lee, so when I first saw this, I groaned. But after watching it, there's some serious ripping on here. Especially from that lil' gromit Jacob Walder. Keep an eye on that kid (reminds me of modern day Guy Mariano). Others skaters include Cato Williams, Jimmy Gorecki, Terry Kennedy and Kevin Booker. The entire DVD is filled to the brim with Pharrell and Neptunes beats, which I don't mind, but watch out for the occasional Pharrell soap box moment - yeeks! Special appearances by Nigo (BAPE), Chad Hugo, Teriyaki Boyz, Rob Dyrdek and more. Tons of tomfoolery involved. Approximately 75 minutes. -C'mish

For the holiday season, Blind has finally decided to give the historic Video Days (possibly the most loved skate video of all time) a proper DVD release. It comes packaged here in this 2 DVD set, complete with its own case and...   expand review  new artwork. The second DVD, the highly hyped What If video (Blind's first video release in the last ten years), is not too shabby either as it shows off Blind's impressive roster of current skaters such as Ronnie Creager, Kris Markovich, James Craig, Corey Sheppard, and others. Both DVDs feature new bonus features exclusive to this set, including promotional videos (circa Video Days) of a young Tim Gavin and Henry Sanchez, and footage from the Trilogy and 20 Shot Sequence videos. The What If DVD features bonus super parts from Ronnie Creager, Morgan Smith, and Jake Duncombe. "Vintage nostalgia throwback skate vid! Let's Go!" Although this was the fourth Bones Brigade video, to many of us skate kids living in the burbs in the late 80's, this was the only skate video! Of course there was Animal Chin...   expand review  & the Santa Cruz viedo series, but nothing could compete with the new age of Powell Peralta. Their filming techniques were hip, almost like real movies at the time(Gleaming The Cube, Police Academy Four) with the coolest in rock, punk, jazz, and alternative tracks gracing the skating as soundtrack. Upon the revisit, I can actually say this is cooler now, after a 20 year hiatus. The clothes, styles, lingo are priceless, and the segments really show how Powell Peralta became synonomous with professional skateboarding. See the OG Bones Brigade(Hawk, Mountain, Cabellero and Guerrero) gromits Ray Barbee, Sanderson, Chet Thomas, Gnarly Jim Thiebaud, ripping segments from Vallely, a very young Colin McKay and Bucky Lasek all as kids eager to shred. It seems Element is finally done riding the Bam hype machine and is back to straight business with this new video. Nyjah Huston hits...   expand review  leadoff, and I only have two words for this skate prodigy: "little freak!" His part would have been the finale if you went on pure difficulty. My other favorites include Tosh Townend who destroys everything he skates, Tony Tave who probably does the most stylish flips ever, the very original Brent Atchley, and the sunglass-sporting Darrell Stanton (why do black skaters always have the best style?). As for filming style, this is one of the best executed videos yet. The filming is super-professional, utilizing interesting POV and multiple angles. The title screens throughout the video are pure class (floating type!), and the soundtrack features very complimentary downtempo beats. No gimmicks here, just solid skating. I don't really know why we carry this shit, a skate video. I love hip hop and I love skateboarding, but they cannot exist on the same plane, it's just too gay. (Don't believe me check anything having to do with Chad...   expand review  Muska, the skateboarding minstrel show). One day I woke up and realized that I'd become so obsessed with this DJ crap that I'd turned my back on my youth, skateboarding (ed. note: get ready for the patented ROC rant). I'm so sick of djs, turntables, idm, disco, hip hop, etc, etc- everywhere I look it's fucking djs, and they almost all suck too. If I have to hear another conversation about digging or library records, I'm gonna go fucking ballistic and kill somebody. So with no desire to practice or go record shopping, I've got plenty of time to skate! Every day I watch the Girl video and then go skate. This is the best video to come out in a long time. It's got something for everybody. Brandon Biebel's got the first part, ripping to a Ghostface instrumental. The super wigga is followed by mega hesher Brian Anderson. Anderson's got hella style and drops hammers skating to Interpol. Marc (best style ever) Johnson sets off the Chocolate section with a bang (fucking Lazer flips!). The rest of the Choc gang catches wreck and NY's own Gino Iannucci puts down possibly the best part of the whole video, wrecking shit to Guns N' Roses. Canadian Rick McCrank rips to Le Tigre, and Boston upstart Jeremy Rogers brings that crazy I haven't graduated high school shit, murdering every gap in sight. Mike Carroll- classic shit. He still rips. And the last part: Eric Koston. Skating to Frank Black, Koston mans up and drops a bigger, better part than Menicmati, possibly his best ever. There's tons more skating, and some clever Spike Jonze skits. The editing is fucking Oscar caliber (check Scott Johnston's part Fame, Fame, Fame). Owen Wilson's cameo is the shit too. The only part that sucks is the Ty Evans homo-erotic techno driven montage, what's up with that guy and techno shit? So far this in the best video of 2003. The skinny on the film itself: "In the late summer of 2006, as the insurgency escalated and gripped every corner of the city, filmmakers Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi traveled to the Red Zone in Baghdad to meet and interview the only heavy metal band in Iraq, Acrassicauda. Heavy Metal In Baghdad is the story of that band and its members, following them from their beginnings under the dying days of Saddam's rule to the present day. The filmmakers have collected glimpses into the struggles of Acrassicauda as they try to stay together and stay alive.
