Remember a few years back when everyone was freaking out over the artists that constructed thousands of fabric-covered "gates" in Central Park? Those artists were Christo & Jeanne-Claude, and this exhaustive 3DVD box set from Plexifilm documents the first 20 years of...
expand review the married couple's career (1974-1995), featuring even more impressive exploits, all seen through the keen lens of the Maysles Brothers (Gimme Shelter, Grey Gardens). The pair are "environmental artists" who take on massive scale art projects (almost always involving nature and fabric) which they finance themselves and leave standing for only a short time - you've really got to see these things to get the full impact of what these people do. Disc 1 starts with Christo's 1974 draping of a massive orange curtain between two mountains in Colorado ("Christo's Valley Curtain"), as well as their 1978 effort to build a 24 mile long / 18 foot high fence of white fabric across the hills of Northern California ("Running Fence"). Disc 2 features Christo & Jeanne-Claude's 1986 attempt to surround eleven islands in Biscayne Bay with 6.5 million square feet of bright pink fabric ("Islands") as well as "Christo In Paris," where, in 1990, they wrapped the Pont Neuf bridge over the Seine in Paris. Disc 3 features "Umbrellas" - you've just gotta see that one for yourself. Not only are the couple's stunts impressive, but these films are extremely well made and Plexifilm has put a great package together here with bonus interviews, audio commentaries, a full-color slipcase and (best of all) an 82-page booklet with amazing exclusive photos, essays and project histories. Recommended. -Larri Byrd
Videos are the best way to experience the Barnstormers. Applying time-lapse filming, their videos capture the raw energy that photos will always lack. I was lucky to dj one of their shows, and the live experience clearly outshined the end product (although...
expand review the end-painting was quite spectacular). Another crew happened to be painting with them, but their energy failed in comparison. That said, this film is the best thing that has happened to video art since that guy poured water on himself. Featuring a lineup of Kami, Mike Ming, Mike Houston, Maya Hayuk, David Ellis, Rostarr, Kenji Hirata, Jose Parla, and others, the crew applies their ego-less (they paint over each other freely), supremely creative painting to barns in Cameron, NC as well as controlled environment indoor shoots. Simply awesome. Recommended. -the mgmnt

expand review ain't lying. In addition to the phenomenal performances, the video captures the candid tour moments like city montages and insightful tour van blurbage. It really manages to transcend your typical DJ video, and gets to the gut of their mission. The same filming/editing team behind D-Style's Night At The Knitting Factory also produced this one, and the end product is extraordinary. It's less a video and more like a professional documentary with skilled editing and artistic filming. Bonus footage includes: studio sessions, explanation and performance of "Lally," and a Gunkhole (djs and live drummer) performance. 90 minutes plus. Recommended. This almost makes me want to pick up scratching again (but not quite). -the mgmnt
For the holiday season, Blind has finally decided to give the historic Video Days (possibly the most loved skate video of all time) a proper DVD release. It comes packaged here in this 2 DVD set, complete with its own case and...
expand review new artwork. The second DVD, the highly hyped What If video (Blind's first video release in the last ten years), is not too shabby either as it shows off Blind's impressive roster of current skaters such as Ronnie Creager, Kris Markovich, James Craig, Corey Sheppard, and others. Both DVDs feature new bonus features exclusive to this set, including promotional videos (circa Video Days) of a young Tim Gavin and Henry Sanchez, and footage from the Trilogy and 20 Shot Sequence videos. The What If DVD features bonus super parts from Ronnie Creager, Morgan Smith, and Jake Duncombe. Daewon and Haslan rip this miniramp with tricks that combine a hybrid of street and stunt skating unlike anything else out there. In fact, some of the tricks are so mindblowing, multiple rewinds were definitely in order. After a couple years, and numerous bootlegs, Shadow & Cut Chemist have finally issued some legitimate items to the public at large. This set includes both the Product Placement DVD and the original Product Placement audio CD. The DVD is all you...
expand review could hope for- extremely well made, quality filming techniques and cleverly put together. The 60 minute Product Placement routine is presented by splicing together the best moments of shows from at least 7 different cities (LA, SF, NYC, Tokyo, London, Manchester, Glasgow, etc), which makes for a much more interesting document than just a straight set in one city. They also pepper the performance with footage of off-stage action, record store hunting (hello Makoto and Weekend Records!), Keb Darge being a crazy motherfucker, Tokyo hotel room record trading, and more. I'm impressed. That would probably be enough, but they also include a second performance montage: Around The World In 14 DJs, which is basically footage of all the guys who opened up for them. Shortkut, Nu-Mark, Dante Carfagne, Z-Trip, Skatemaster Tate (!), Egon, Marvski, Keb Darge, etc all playing strictly 45s! True nerds can also watch the whole thing with commentary from Shadow & Cut (it's actually quite amusing); and don't forget that the package also includes the Product Placement audio cd. Quite a bargain. The DVD is Region 1 (NTSC) encoded. Bonus product placement: Cut Chemist sweating through one of our logo t-shirts in Glasgow! -the mgmnt

I thought I'd throw this DVD on and get some work done at the same time, but in about 5 minutes, I was glued to the couch. At the Lab, I've seen tons of graf dvds, but none has ever revealed the...
expand review full story about graf artists like this. I don't how Doug Pray (who also directed the turntablism documentary Scratch) convinced his subjects to do this. I mean it's full disclosure: Pray films them in the act bombing, in their homes, with their parents, and at their work. What makes it gripping though is the quality of the subjects. Like in Scratch, Pray goes straight for the large players in the game, all from different backgrounds. First you he Earsnot, the downtown writer, who happens to be black and ***** (I won't spoil it), then you got Claw, the female fashionista bomber; Enem, the North Philly writer with all the crazy hand-styles; Jase, who has a well documented obsession with rails; Saber, probably one of the most standout writers in the last decade; and Toomer, an og west coast latino writer. In addition, he follows around Joe Connolly aka "The Graffiti Guerilla," who takes buffing graf as serious (and beefs as hard) as the kids writing it (dude is a nut). In the end, Pray somehow weaves these diverse stories into one without putting a commercialized or overly counter-culture gloss on it (the ultimate downfall of Scratch). 90 minutes plus 40 minutes of bonus features. Soundtrack by Z-Trip. Recommended. -the mgmnt

If you ride a bike this shit needs no explanation. Seriously, Monster Track is some legendary alleycat shit. It's like how elephants all go to the same place to die or something, bike messengers (and non-messengers) know that sometime in the winter,...
expand review they must, for reasons unknown to outsiders, travel to NY and ride brakeless track bikes at neckbreak speed through hell, high water and murderous taxi cabs for nothing but glory. Sadly, in 2008, Monster Track outgrew itself and was cancelled. This video documents all aspects of the 2007 Monster Track extravaganza in all the filth and fury of its final year. Pop this shit in and watch as world infamous messenger Mike Dee takes you through the week of mayhem leading up to and through the main race. It's broken down into a couple of sections. First, of course, is the race footage pieced together with a bunch of handheld and helmet cams (including mad shots by Lucas Brunelle) featuring the classic Austin bridge skitch crash, some shredding through the streets, a crazy ass motherfucker on a pennyfarthing (Wikipedia that shit if you don't know rookie), and a whole bunch more. They also got a ton of interviews with riders hosted by Mike Dee and the always lovely Kym. Finally a whole segment by Mike Green and Chris Kim on Hal and Shino the 2007 world messenger track champion as they take on the snow, cabs and drunk antics of the NYC bike world. Scope this shit, it's the last hurrah of a legendary event that may never exist again. If you liked the Pedal and Mash DVDs, this shit is straight up your alley. Recommended. -Newjack
Fully impressive. Not only does it do justice to the freshness that is Frisco graff, but It's also uncovering the history of a mysterious culture that has never really been disected or exposed. "Piece By Piece" documents the story of San Francisco's...
expand review graf movement through the artists and people that made it happen. They accurately go over the last 20 years of graff in the city - from it's early roots in Latino cholo hand styles, to the early Muni bus tag wars (in contrast to NYC's subway wars), to the evolution of the SF style over the years through competition between crews, law enforcement, and other outside influences - all narrated by the writers that lived it and illustrated with beautiful footage and flicks from the time. The cast of writers that shaped the style are all in here and are legends in their own right - Twist, DUG, Cycle, KR (krink in the house), Grey, Revok, Giant, Deen, Dream, Saber, TMF crew, TWS crew, ICP crew, and many, many more. The soundtrack fits perfectly with plenty of introspective beats and hard Bay scratch business from none other than the Piklz (Q-bert + D-styles). One of the best grafitti movies I've seen. expand review that? Well for this DVD, Q's giving it all away - over 100 scratch techniques revealed with video demos and detailed explanation for each! It's as if David Blaine made a how-to video and gave away his biggest and most secret magic tricks. The DVD plays out like a video dictionary - literally - with scratches laid out alphabetically, and arranged in a book-like format with flip through buttons to quickly navigate through the pages. One side of the screen scrolls text on how to do the scratch technically, while the other side shows a video demo (which can be made full screen) on how it should look and sound. The scratches are demonstrated by the best of the best - everyone from Q (and his many aliases) to Tyra From Saigon, Flare, Rafik, Z-Trip and more. Altanta's DJ Shortee provides us with one of the most comprehensive instructional videos to date. This video includes sections on set-up and equipment; a very detailed beat matching lesson, scratching and juggling, and insider tips. The strength of this video lies...
expand review in the details. Before we even get started playing records, Shortee breaks down all the equipment for us: where to plug the chords on the mixer, the difference between phono and line and ground wire. Then she breaks down such things as the three parts that compose the headshell: needle, cartridge and headshell, orthodox setup and unorthodox set up and what's especially good for scratching. Everything is shot professionally and the camera catches the minutia with several different angles so you don't miss any details.
She then breaks down the turntable itself and goes over every button and switch (slipmats, too) and gives a detailed explanation of the tone arm base and all of its components. She always gives her personal recommendations as well as what are the more common set ups and why they differ. For this video she uses the Stanton Sk-2 mixer and of course Technics 1200MK2 turntables: the industry standard. She goes on to talk about the mixer and all of the components, master/cue, master level, cue pan, "all the hot mixers have this feature", the eq, highs, mids, lows and the gain, microphone knobs, faders and of course everyones favorite: the crossfader. After the equipment breakdown there's a few cuts of different professional DJ's discussing their techniques and styles. Shortee then takes us through the beginnings of blending two records together and even gets into some detail of time signature, notes, beat counting and exactly what to listen for when you're beat matching. She shows us how to slow down a record or speed it up, what your audience hears vs. what you're hearing, blending records using upfaders, crossfaders as well as the eq. Throughout the video we are encouraged to trust our instincts and our gut when it comes to everything from beat matching to picking your playlist. Before we get into straight scratching. we learn everything from marking the records, which beats and sounds are good for scratching, hand position and control, turntable height, stance etc. Then she breaks down many different styles of scratching like the stab, echo, transform, the chirp, the flare, the crab and how to combine various scratches. Again the camera catches everything and Shortee's got the skills. This video isn't just for novices but also for sophomore DJ's who'd like to add different techniques to their style. The section on beat juggling shows 2 of Shortees routines as well as the basics: back spinning, tap pausing and "the walk" in creating juggle patterns. The video ends with commentary on how to shop for records, where to go, what to look for (i.e. songs that you know or cover art) and how to organize you're records in your crate. Although the delivery is a bit dry, overall this is the most detailed instructional video we've ever seen and what Shortee lacks in pizazz she makes up for with talent and a great method of teaching you how to hone your skills. -the mgmnt

You need to get a jobby job!") and "Doggy Dog World." But wait – that's not all! (In best infomercial voice.) They also have Snoop performing on SNL, doing "Gin & Juice" live on an unspecified show, full videos for "Midnight Love" and "Head Doctor" as well as the bonus uncut video for Dre & Cube's "Natural Born Killaz." When you're done with that, sink your teeth into the real meat of this thing - the Bonus Features! Unlike other DVD's, the bonus section is actually my favorite part! In fact, the J.Dilla 2003 interview and Charizma & PB Wolf mini-documentary are probably worth the entire DVD. Catch Dilla spitting real talk on the industry and Jaylib, and Charizma in the studio with PB in '92!
