Bastard Language Tour (D-Styles, Ricci Rucker) DVD
This is like the Endless Summer of scratch videos. It follows D-Styles, Ricci Rucker, Mike Boogie, Toadstyle, and Excess as they "embark on a journey along the US West Coast showcasing a new style of music performed entirely with turntables." And they ain't lying. In addition to the phenomenal performances, the video captures the candid tour moments like city montages and insightful tour van blurbage. It really manages to transcend your typical DJ video, and gets to the gut of their mission. The same filming/editing team behind D-Style's Night At The Knitting Factory also produced this one, and the end product is extraordinary. It's less a video and more like a professional documentary with skilled editing and artistic filming. Bonus footage includes: studio sessions, explanation and performance of "Lally," and a Gunkhole (djs and live drummer) performance. 90 minutes plus. Recommended. This almost makes me want to pick up scratching again (but not quite).

DJ Dusk's Root Down Soundclash (Madlib vs. Cut Chemist) DVD
Years in the making, Mochilla unleashes this most excellent document of Cali's legendary "Root Down Soundclash" nights curated by the late great DJ Dusk. Round 1 in January 2001 featured an incredible showdown between the most prolific stoner Madlib and the one and only Cut Chemist; April 2002 saw People Under The Stairs' Thes One squaring off against Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am (pre-mega-mega-stardom); and in December 2003, 'Lib's brother and fellow Stones Thrower Oh No and Emanon's Exile. Mochilla shot each clash on two cameras and presents both views simultaneously, side-by-side for a unique viewing experience. Check the YouTube clip for a taste, then go ahead and add to cart. Includes a trailer for Mochilla's Brasilintime documentary. 2 hours, 3 minutes running time. Recommended.

DJ Flare: Magnifrying Glass DVD
It's good to see that some things never change. Flare is still pumping out those hard electro funk beats that dj's love to use for masochistic 45min skratch sessions trying to reach skratch nirvana like q-bert, and d-styles. This time he's released a dvd so that you don't have to zone out on your mixwell poster but on images of hot girls, psychedelic imagery, and sped up roadtrip footage. pop this in your player, and don't think..... "feeeeeeeel."

Gunkhole: Live In Bologna DVD
I remember seeing Gunkhole perform back in '04 in the Bay and being blown away by their psychedelic, free jazz scratch fusion styles. The innovative dream team of D-Styles, Ricci Rucker, Mike Boo on the cut plus drums provided by Giovani Taylor is just too ill - this is progressive scratch music at its best, and to top it off - it's all improvised! The footage on this DVD is actually from their live set in Bologna, Italy in 2005 in which they recruited the help of Alesandro Meroli on stand up bass and Nicola Negrini on baritone sax and flute to really flesh-out the sound. If you just heard the sounds with the screen off, you might think it was some experimental prog record from the 70's - lots of super dubbed out synths and keys, jazzy freeform breaks, and plenty of psychedelic sound manipulation. But the visuals truly take the experience over the top with tons of random tripped-out clips mixed over their live 60+ minute jam footage. I would suggest being in an altered state while watching. Also includes bonus scratch session footage from shows In France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and UK. Recommended.

QBert: Live In Australia & Asia DVD
Qbert is a little older now, settling into his skin like a jazz master. This is the first Turntable TV since he's gone into hiding in Hawaii, and he's emerged as a more skilled musician. Gone are the "areyouberrytight" jokes as QBert seems to have taken his role as diplomat of scratch even more seriously. And it shows in this video, as Qbert amazes stadiums full of people with that trademark intensity and unbelievable new skills. This documentary follows Q as he introduces his higher level of scratching to cities in Australia and Asia. It reminds of when I was first getting so hyped about this shit, watching those kids go crazy at the shows. Q totes only his QFO (turntable with a mixer built-in), giving this a real guy on a mission feeling. Approximately one hour.

Turntable TV Deluxe DVD
It's been years since the last Turntable TV, but Q-bert, Yogafrog, and Skratchy Seal are still up to their wacky scratch antics. In the latest installment of the TTV saga, witness DJ Q-bert visit the UK for DMC 2005 and chill with DJ Yeah (youngest scratch DJ), the secret origin of Skratchy Seal, Beat Boxing + Floor Squeaking with Trihedral, funky-ass tutting from Bionic Man and Pharcyde, the making of the QFO, and of course... LOTS of freestyle scratch sessions with Q and his homies from around the globe (like Misaya + Kouji of Japan, Vajra, Rafik, and Tyra). Features tons of extras too - most notably a bunch of old school TTV clips from the Thud Rumble vaults.
