Often hailed as the best electronic album of 2003, this rare piece of genre-straddling art is a testament that techno did not die - and that house music got boring enough to revamp itself. Looking back now it's quite apparent that Matthew Dear had a profound effect on the dance music community and this album was one of the turning points. With a sound that successfully blends home listening atmospherics, house rhythms, minimal dancefloor thump and dark moods, Leave Luck To Heaven has garnered as much attention from punk rock kids and bedroom rockers as it did from the established techno community. Often compared to Richie Hawtin and Ricardo Vilalobos, Dear championed a crossover between house, minimal aesthetics, new school click and the DIY ethics that fuel the Spectral label. With tracks like "It's Over Now," Dear takes a cue from indie rock with emo vocals that drift between sarcasm and introspection, and ultimately take the back seat to a thumping beat. On "Just Us Now" and "Fex" he experiments with different rhythmic styles, furthering the fusion effect while maintaining a fresh perspective on the arrangement. Tracks like "Reason and Responsibility" show off Dear's drum programming and ear for the sinister. With pop sensibility and a herky jerky beat that promises to leave nobody leaning against the wall, the highlight of the album is definitely "Dog Days." It's become a club anthem played by DJs of all persuasions and is known to raise screams from the first few chords of the very recognizable melody. One play of this catchy vocal hook and hip shaking shuffle turned many skeptical friends into believers. Matthew Dear has created a dark and funky sound that grows on you with each listen. If you missed this album the first time around, pay close attention now and hear dance music evolving.
