Deetron & Nick Chacona
Papas A La Huancaina 12"
deep and funky house styles
The Stilove4music label does it again with 3 untitled cuts of jamming house music from NY's Nick Chacona and Deetron out of Switzerland. Great vibe on all these cuts (1,2,3) that ride that fine line between funky and deep styles with mesmerizing synth lines, groovy bass, and solid drums. Very useful stuff that can go equally well in your house set or disco set. Don't miss it!

DJ Sneak
Da Pimpdoggy 12"
Classic house remixes from 1995. Personally, I love this era of house music, where producers like Sneak, Armand Van Helden and Kenny Dope were pumping out house versions of their favorite funk, hip-hop, and disco tracks. "All Over(1)" reworks the Loose Joints classic "It's All Over My Face," while "Che-Chez Fame(2)" is a cheeky take on Dr. Buzzard's "Cherchez La Femme." Those are definitely fun spins, but "Because Your Love Ain't True(3)" is probably the most robust track on here, it's bass-y and super-energetic. Three for three. Also includes and alternate mix of "Che-Chez."

Kink
Psyche Funk EP
Detroit house from Bulgaria, pick
Bulgarian Kink has quietly been dropping some incredible records; he's definitely on the road to becoming a cult producer. "Psyche Funk(1)" shows off his talent with a truly original sound, pairing undulating synths with crisp Chicago house drum kit. Check all the permutations that he gets out of the two parts, so sick. B-side shows the inspiration he draws from the Detroit masters with the Moody-esque "Tropic(2)" and "Trevoga(3)." Makes you just want to hear more of his stuff, recommended.

Idjut Boys
Droid Five / Six 12"
deep and dubbed out minimal tracks
Number three from the Idjut Boys' Droid imprint which focuses more on the dubby electronic side of things. Serious late night (or early morning) excursion material here, with a pair of hypnotic trips through the world of raw drum machines and synths put through the ringer of echo effects. Both "Five(1)" and "Six(2)" go to the depths and are a perfect complement to throw in the mix with your raw proto-house, italo dub set. Limited one-time press.

Art Of Tones
Call The Shots (Motor City Drum Ensemble Remix) 12"
cooled out vocal house, pick
"You're my sugar, my cocaine, my weed." Tres cool. Art Of Tones enlists the vocals of Jaw for this future house number. "Call The Shots(1)" is so cooled-out... I would have taken just the dub version(2), but the vocals take it to that next level. Pushing it to the "pick" level, there's a b-side remix by producer du jour Motor City Drum Ensemble(3). Recommended.

Michael Jackson
I Love MJ Edits (P.Y.T., Get On The Floor, Forever Came Today) 12"
top notch MJ edits, pick
I know there's been a flood of MJ edits and remixes lately, but seriously these ones are really worth checking out. London's Kay Sputnik goes the tasteful route with his MJ edits, keeping the originals intact and using simple but effective cuts and dub outs to extend the grooves in all the right places for better mix-ability and dancefloor impact. Check the extended pleasure on his edit of "PYT(1)," "Dance WIth Me(2)," and two sublime versions of "Forever(3,4)." Quality stuff thats been getting tons of play from DJs like Theo, etc. Recommended.

Pink Skull
Endless Bummer LP
cosmic disco punk with spaced out ambient touches, limited
Debut release from RVNG's new originals series. Rather than focusing on edits and the like, this new limited series will focus on completely original material from contemporary acts. Electro rockers Pink Skull kick the series off with their sophomore full length Endless Bummer. It's a lot less 'electro-y' than what you've experienced with Pink Skull's previous releases, with an impressive sound that is much more live than anything. Think cosmic punk funk meets ambient soundscapes crafted on real synths, drums, bass, guitars, and human voices with minimal use of computer machines. Check the new sounds on vocals tracks like "Peter Cushing(1)" and "Oh Monorail(2)," Krautrock style guitar freakouts on "Fast Forward to Bolivia(3)," deep and cavernous disco dance tracks like "Endless Bummer(4)" and "Chicken Dream Inside Egg(5)," plus spaced out cosmic treats like "Ritualistic Bug Use(6)," and ambient jams like "Wheet (7)" and "Fired So Fired(8)." Crazy packaging that comes in one of 3 flo-colored jackets each with a unique "bummer" printed on the front (i.e. smelly retainer, blue balls, obama 2012, etc.) Limited press of 1000. Recommended.

Toxic Avenger
Toxic Is Dead (Drop The Lime, Franki Chan, Cyberpunkers) 12"
frantic electro-house, heavy remixes
Lead single off Toxic Avenger's upcoming full length. "Toxic Is Dead(1)" is a full dose of banging electro-house to give the dancefloor convulsions. The original mix is already wild and crazy as-is, with all manner of screeching distorted synth action, but then you also get bass monsters like T&B's Drop The Lime(2) and South Central(3) on the remix to really take it to the limit. Also includes a remix from IHEARTCOMIX label head Franki Chan(4) and the Cyberpunkers(5), but the DTL remix wins. Packaged in a neat die cut sleeve, and pressed on hot red vinyl. Not only that, but the 12" also comes with a coupon that's redeemable for a free download of the record from the IHEARTCOMIX website.

Arthur Russell
A Tribute To Arthur Russell (Faze Action, Pocketknife, Mark E) 12"
top notch remixes of Arthur Russell classics
Pick! The first 12" from Electric Minds' forth coming Tribute To Arthur Russell was a sleeper hit here at the Lab selling out quietly every time it was restocked, and you can bet this one will do the same (maybe not so quietly). This sampler comes STACKED with top notch remixes and cover versions from the scene's brightest producers. First up is the always on-point Faze Action taking on "In The Light Of The Miracle" with Yam Who and Mary Moore on vocals. This remix(1) is so good it even got our FedEx guy asking who it was when it was playing on th speakers! Deep funky bass topped off with Arthur-esque keys true to the original, an irresistible horn lick and cool vocals create a vibe you just don't want to end. Up next, the homie Pocketknife (of Tamourine Dream/Flagrant Fowl fame) rocks an excellent version of "Get Around To It(2)" with dope live cello by Heather McIntosh and vocals by Joe Worricker that are jaw-droppingly similar Arthur's! This version even gets a rework(3) by editor supreme and recent Lab fave Mark E that turns down the bpms and gets really deep and dark. The Andy Spence (of New Young Pony Club) version(4) of "Arm Around You" rounds of another choice 12" from Electric Minds. Can't wait for the full length! Recommended.

Jeff Mills
The Drummer Pt.2 12"
chicago house drum homage to classic drummers
Second in Jeff Mills' drummer tribute series. Mills pays homage to 6 classic drummers here: Mukul Dongre(1) (top indian drummer), Pete Escovedo(2) (father to Sheila E!), Talvin Singh(3), Yamato(4) (traditional Japanese drummers), Tony Allen(5), and Blas Coyazo(6). Don't expect traditional drumming sounds here, Mills interprets each style using old school drum machines and little else. The whole thing plays like a Chicago house mixing tool.

Ron Hardy
Ron Wants To Ride / Home Phone (Jamie Principle, Loftis) 12"
rare disco and house edits from the master
That's right, two more lost Ron Hardy edits pressed up on mysterious translucent vinyl. No info at all on these things (plain black labels on both sides), but really all you have to know is that these are the work of the edit master Ron Hardy and that they're super duper limited. One side features a never before heard mix of Jamie Principle's freaky Trax classic "Baby Wants To Ride(1)," while the other features an edit of Mach's "On and On(2)," a staple in the early house scene with that infectious "Toot, Toot! Beep, Beep!" sample from Donna Summer. Get it!

2020 Soundsystem
The Chase / Your Love (Giorgio Moroder, Frankie Knuckles) 12"
live covers of classic dance tracks
UK's 2020 Soundsystem is a live electronic act consisting of two Brits and two Argentinians rocking drums, keys, and a DJ on loops and beats. This 12" features a couple tracks they have been killing with at their live shows including a wicked cover of the Giorgio Moroder classic "The Chase(1)" that sounds so identitical to the original I thought it was some kind of re-edit at first. All the arpeggios are their and they hit the synth sounds spot on. The flip features a cover of Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle's "You Love(2)." This time the live drums give it away, but again the synth is right on. The vocalist doesn't hold a torch to Principle, but you can think of it as more of a new disco style homage. Limited pressing.

Dizzee Rascal
Holiday (Laidback Luke Remix) 12"
grime meets big room house
Single sided remix 12" for Rascal's "Holiday," which was absolutely massive across the pond this summer. Laidback Luke take's the original's cheesy dance sensibilities and turns the energy up to 11 with some big room house synths and wild electro flourishes. Definitely a killer track for DJs that play larger rooms. Plays at 45.

Audiotech
Phase Two / Techno City 95 12"
90s Detroit electro from Juan Atkins
Audio Tech is a collaboration between Detroit techno godfather Juan Atkins and Robert Cook. On this 12" (originally released in '95), the duo rock raw Detroit electro styles reminiscent of Juan's seminal Model 500 work on "Phase Two(1)." Still equally tough and futuristic even after over a decade. Flipside features a smooth and dubby rework Juan's classic Cybotron track "Techno City(1)." Nice quality repress with clean looking Metroplex labels.

Cabin Fever
Cabin Fever Trax, Vol.8 (Red Vinyl) 12"
spooky deep house
Cabin Fever numero ocho comes from Boola & Negru. The duo get eerie on Radio Slave's limited run label rocking a two unnamed joints that go to the depths of deep dark side. Pounding beats get attacked by spooky, haunting sounds (like door creeks and wind blowing) on the A- side, while the B-side puts you in a trance with a relentless 1 bar keyloop that goes on and on and on and... till eerie bells and vocals come in to put a spell on you. Bright red vinyl, dumb limited.

Ron Trent & Chez Damier
The Choice 12"
90's Chicago deep house collab
Lovin' these 90's deep house represses. Here we have a meeting of the two veteran Chicago dance music producers on wax: Ron Trent and Chez Damier as Chez-N Trent! The two put their heads together and give us "The Choice" in four different flavors. First up is the Chi-Town style "Windy City Club(1)" version that rocks it deep with the vocals and pianos. Up next is a raw, stripped down dub mix(2) that goes HARD with pounding kicks and synth bass, but the winner is the B-side mixes. The Full Dosage(3) and Witch Doctor Mix(4) do it up nicely with a nice balance of sick funky synths and deeper elements.

Chez Damier
I Never Knew Love 12"
90's deep house from Chicago
Another 90's house gem by Chez Damier (KMS #48 to be exact) repressed! Once you get passed the essential classics like Nightcrawlers, Hardrive, etc. the world of 90's house can be hard to navigate through, but you can bet that Chez will come through with quality joints that hit it right. "I Never Knew Love" is uplifting 90's vocal house at its best. Great vibe through and through with those signature 90's synths and piano chords. The "Made In Detroit Mix(1)" goes hard with said piano chords and hits a little harder than the MK Club Mix(2), while the "Change Up Mix(3)" goes deeper than the rest. Also includes the hypnotic "Help Myself(4)" that can work as an awesome mix tool.

Chez Damier
Can U Feel It 12"
90's deep house from Chicago
Nice repress of this 90's Chicago house jam from your boy Chez Damier. "Can U Feel It(1)" (not to be confused with Fingers Inc's classic) pumps it up with with driving organ stabs and diva vocals, but it's the "MK Dub(2)" that hits the spot for me. With more of a minimal approach, the track rides a small humming loop of the vocals with some seriously deep synth sweeps till the strings and keys hit to take it to the top. Don't sleep on "2 1/2 Step(3)" either (the sleeper pick off this 12"), with it's beautiful chords backed up by deep bubbling bass synths. Very soulful electronic music. It's no surprise either that Detroit legend Derrick May had a hand in these productions. Recommended.

Big Strick
7 Days 12"
deep Detroit house from Omar S' cousin
Debut 12" for Big Strick on Omar S' FHXE label. Like his cousin Omar, Big Strick manages to keeps things deep and gangster at the same time with 5 tracks of authentic Detroit flavor. Check the opener "Boss Nigga!(1)" that uses just the bare minimum of elements to keep you entranced. Things get interesting on "Buckle Up!(2)" on which Strick utilizes a hypnotizing synth loop over a pumping 4x4 pattern, while "A Walk Down Linwood(3)" samples political speeches, documentaries, and movies to create a militant collage of black america. The EP closes out with "Whatup Doe(4)" another very Omar S- ish instrumental track. Also includes an instrumental version of "A Walk Down Linwood" entitled "Black Talk(5)".

The Revenge
Forever In Their Debt (Red Rack'Em Remix) 12"
vintage-sounding Chicago house and Detroit style dance
The Revenge, aka Graeme Clark of 6th Borough Project, drops one for the vintage Chicago house heads. Utilizing a Larry Heard-esque synth kit and some purposely imperfect vocal snippets, "Forever In Their Debt(1)" sounds like a new edit of a lost Chicago 12", rather than something built from scratch. On the b-side, Red Rack'Em(2) stuffs the original in the trunk and drives it to Detroit with a sound that will make Moody and Theo fans smile. Two strong tracks, recommended.

The 3 Chairs; Marcellus Pittman drops another release on his sporadic Unirhythm imprint. This record has that added air of mystery to it with a plain green label, handstamped with a unique edition number (only 500 copies pressed). The A-Side is "TOM Remix(1)," a dynamic DJ tool that will keep the heads bouncing in the club. Saint Etienne
Only Love Can Break Your Heart Remixes (Richard X, Air France) 12"
new remixes of downtempo classic
Saint Etienne's 1990 "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" crossed over from synth-pop hit to downtempo classic with a string of excellent remixes by producers like Masters At Work and Andrew Weatherall. This 2009 remix single attempts to re-create the magic with two similarly aimed reworks. Richard X(1) re-fits the original vocals with balearic-downtempo beat to great success, but really, it's really hard to F up with such cooled out vocals. On the flip, Air France (Swedish buzz producers who recently appeared on Acephale) take it back to 1990 with their mix of "Spring(2)," sounding like Nellee Hooper in his prime. Also includes Richard X's instrumental mix and his bonus remix(3) of "Girl VII." For fans of the original, recommended.

beathead and dance sounds combined
Sygaire, whom we first encountered on Raw Fusion and Melting Pot Music, pops up on the Room With A View imprint with his future breakbeat style. His sound is truly unique as it mixes beathead and dance aesthetics to a perfect balance. Check "Mono:Poly(1)" with its uptempo breaks and head nod-inducing bass burps. "The Time Is Now(2)" is equally intriguing, as Sygaire mixes underground soul jazz of the 70s with minimal house. The Bravery
Slow Poison (Drop The Lime Remix) 10"
indie dance remixed
The Bravery had a hit a few years ago with "An Honest Mistake," and here they're preparing to take the world again with their new wave/power pop sound. "Slow Poison(1)" is a a pretty generic indie dance track, but catchy enough that it could see some mainstream success if it gets enough push. The real reason you're here, though, is to see what Drop The Lime's take on power pop(2) sounds like. DTL puts forward what is by far the most commercial, straight-laced track I've ever heard from him. That's not a bad thing though, cause I'm not sure I want to hear what happens when the Bravery singer's emo-warble gets combined with Drop The Lime's signature bassy-wobble. The icing on this one is the steel drum parts, which add a nice lightness to the track and make it an easy addition to any indie dance night's playlist. Pressed on a nifty looking transparent-orange 10", plays at 33.

The Remix Suite (The Neptunes, Salaam Remi, Steve Aoki) 2LP
Compilation of new remixes comissioned by Universal Motown
Since his passing, there've been many MJ remix compilations passing through these hallowed internets, but this is the first one that compiles new remixes that were commissioned in tribute to the musical icon. The talent here was culled by Universal-Motown from many different ends of the spectrum (hip hop, house, electro, reggae, etc). Peep futuristic hip hop remixes from The Neptunes(1), Polow Da Don(2), Benny Blanco(3), Akon(4), and my favorite of the bunch, Dallas Austin(5). For the house heads, they got Frankie Knuckles(6), David Morales, and Steve Aoki(7). Finally, check out Salaam Remi's excellent reggae rendition of "ABC(8)." 12 tracks total, spread across 2LPs and packaged in a nice gatefold sleeve that includes notes from the producers involved.

future dance with vocals
Scored some clear vinyl promo copies of this remix single on Rebirth. Motor City Drum Ensemble is quickly becoming one of my favorite producers and he shows why with this expertly executed remix(1). Check the depth. People need to get up on this guy. Another rising name, Mark E (author of that R+B Drunkie record, a Lab favorite) delivers a challenging half-time remix(2) which becomes clear in the final third (ie. the payoff). The Force (Ame Remix) 10"
breaky Ame remix, cool packaging
Ame's remix of "The Force(1)" is unexpected. It sounds like a cut you'd find on a late nineties downtempo record. It's a bit breaky and its got that dark club vibe (thinking DJ Shadow-era UNKLE). Whatever the case, it sounds fresh, and the great 10" packaging only adds to the appeal. B-side features the Alternative Version(2), a beat-less soundscape style track.

Juiceboxxx & Dre Skull
Hype (Sinden Remix) 12"
energetic hip-house and electro
he final installment in Juiceboxxx & Dre Skull's trilogy of singles (the first two were Sweat and Center Stage). Just like their previous work, this oen features some wild, fast paced raps from Mr. Boxxx backed by great production from the always reliable Dre Skull. "Hype(1)" is an uptempo breakbeat track that lurks beneath lyrics about getting... well, hype. Huge remixes here too, with Sinden turning it into a straight up hip-house track(2) and Dre Skull taking an extra crack at it(3), making it into a "hands in the air" techno moment. Also features the "hype-apella" for all you remixers out there. Packaged in a nice looking pic sleeve, plays at 33.

Cole Medina
Scott K. & Cole Medina vs. James Brown - I'm Satisfied (White Vinyl) 12"
dj remixes and tools of James Brown tracks, pick
Cole Medina moves records. His records consistently appeal to the edit snobs, house heads, and money gig club djs. Here he teams up with Scott K for a great set of James Brown remixes and DJ tools. The housey extended mix(1) of "I'm Satisfied" is already a big hit amongst djs in the know (see the attached video of Jesse Saunders killing the crowd with it). Next checkout the two supremely useful JB DJ tools, "Clap Your Conga(2)" and "Stomp Your Cowbell(3)." These will get your creative juices flowing. Lastly, for all the hardcore JB fans, the duo has thrown in an original public service announcement from the Godfather telling his children to stay off drugs. Finally, it's pressed up on white vinyl with only 500 copies pressed. Highly recommended.

Trevor Loveys
Organ Grinder Remixes (Herve, High Rankin, GreenMoney) 12"
remixes for fidget tech house anthem, samples "Organ Donor"
The original version of Trevor Lovey's "Organ Grinder(1)" was an anthem for fidget heads back in '07 (possibly Dubsided's biggest track?) with its sampling of DJ Shadow's infamous "Organ Donor". Fast forward two years later and the gets a fresh 12" pressing for those that missed it, complete with 3 new remixes that bang. The Count aka Herve goes in for the kill on his "Big B Morgan Remix(2)" freaking and twisting wonky synths and using b-more style build up tactics to blow the roof off the mutha. London's DJ Greenmoney gives us the "Lighter Remix(3)" that builds on a Kwaito rhythm (remember Mujava's "Township Funk"?) with womping bass and screeching synths that ultimately get that ass movin'. Plus with the "Organ Donor" sample over the top, it's a sureshot! Also features the requisite dubstep remix(4) by High Rankin' for good measure. Recommended.

Claude VonStroke
The Greasy Beat (feat. Bootsy Collins) 12"
bass heavy dance track
Claude VonStroke nailed the title on this one. This is indeed "greasy" with a low and lean sound, some slimy beats, and Bootsy playing mic shotta. I can't help but think of fried chicken when I hear this... a three piece dinner would be nice. Two mixes, one bass-y(1), one more techy(2). Recommended.

And If
Beyond Senses (Pezzner Remix) 12"
stringed piece gets minimal and cosmic remixes
Another Jamal pick from the Manhattan Store. Dude digs deep into DJ lists for these. This one is on Italy's respected Rebirth imprint. The Original Reprise(1) of "Beyond Senses" is just the setup here. This orchestral - electronic track is a gorgeous song nonetheless, totally cinematic. This is so wide open for remixing, even Jason Campbell could hit it in the endzone. Seattle's Pezzner(2) comes in with side-spanning drama, part minimal, part shuffling house. A two minute sound clip does this no justice as it really gets heavy at minute 6 of 9. On the flip, Harri and The Revenge(3) drive the original into the cosmic realm with dusted drums, a nice use of the strings, and chilly vacuus feel.

Kaos
Panopeeps (Shit Robot Remix) 12"
If the name sounds familiar to Labheads, Kaos has recently released singles on Kitsune and Rong. "Panopeeps(1)" is new to me, but apparently, it carries a bit of a reputation. It's become a staple at clubs that play this type of electro, and to get all anecdotal, even Carl Craig came up to the DJ booth at Berlin's Panorama Bar and name dropped the track. One drop of the needle and you'll see what the fuss is about. This is production magic... poof upside your head! So musical, smooth, and brilliantly executed, it reminds me of a Daniel Wang track in terms of musicianship. It even has that rare vintage feel, even though it was recorded in 2003. On the flip, you get a pretty damn hot remix(2) by DFA's Shit Robot, and the cool comic cover seals the deal. There's been a lot of "R" dropping lately (I must say justly so), but I'm gonna have to drop it again. Recommended.

Dustin Zahn
Stranger (Len Faki Remix) 12"
hard, high powered techno
Sweet Jesus! I haven't heard techno breaks this hard since the 90's when i was sportin' JNCO pants and twirlin' glowsticks in some shady warehouse trippin' my balls off. Wow. This is totally taking it there. Len Faki is going HARD on his remixes of Dustin Zahn's "Stranger (To Stability)." No joke. The X-Break Mix(1) rocks tough with a relentless breakbeat and huge sub bass that just rolls for days. Mean synth stabs jab your ears consistently keeping you going till the quick breakdown, then its back to more crazy bass rolling. The Podium mix(2) is pretty similar but swaps out the breaks for a pounding 4 on the floor kick drum. You could fully rock a stadium with this. Bang it loud!

cosmic synth excursions from Professor Genius & Speculator
PG&S is a collaboration from Professor Genius (Italians Do It Better, Bim Marx) and Speculator (Galaxy Toobin', Grackle) on the newly formed Greek label, Echovolt Records. If you know anything about these two guys, you know they love synths! Their debut EP Motorik is like a journey through vast cosmic synthscapes, where you can totally get lost in the waves of intricate sequences, modulations and arpeggios. Listen to the epic "Jive(1)," or the adventurous double- time drive of the title track(2) for a taste. The EP also includes solo tracks from each artist including Speculators cosmic italo tune "Lucky(3)" and Professor Genius' upbeat "Heaven Sent(4)." Linkwood Family
Barely Eagle 10"
quality deep disco, boogie and jazz vibes
Another superb 10" from UK's Firecracker Recordings (#4 if your counting). When it comes to the deeper side of new disco, these cats got it on lock, release after release. Check the title track "Barely Eagle(1)" from Linkwood and House Of Traps featuring serious drums with filtered disco loops and dubbed out effects, perfect for your late night disco flights. "Who La La(2)" on the flip gets mean with the edit. A tough boogie groove chopped and spliced by Linkwood that'll work the floor up while Fude Fingas' "Situation Diminished (3)" will bring 'em back down with its tasteful jazzy mood. Limited press, these will go quick. Recommended.

MJ Remixes Vol.4 (MAW, Quentin Harris, Mousse T) 2LP
90s house remixes of MJ
And the remixes just keep coming! No seriously, it's getting kind of ridiculous, but it's MJ so you can't hate. This is the 4th sneaky compilation of MJ remixes, now focusing on the 90s house side of things. Masters at Work kick things of with a real funky house version of "Don't Stop(1)," while Quentin Harris takes it deeper on his version of "Smooth Criminal(2)." The most pumping version of "Say Say Say(3)" I've ever heard comes next and is uncredited (simlpy titled the 2005 white label mix), while Tommy D keeps it smooth and groovy for his remix of "Wanna Be Startin(4)." There's cool mix of "Smooth Criminal(5)" by Brothers In Rhythm, but the real jam is Mousse T's remix of "Ghosts(6)." Yup "Ghosts," from that MJ x Stephen King TV Special in the 90s. If you don't remember "Ghosts" look it up on youtube right now and be prepared to be blown away. Play that one on Halloween for extra props. 8 tracks total.

Leron Carson
Red Lightbulb Theory 87-88 2x12"
raw, lo-fi house from Chicago
If you like you're Chicago house raw and dirty, the latest Sound Signature release is just for you! Leron Carson was something of an underground house prodigy creating primitve house tracks at the tender age of 15 with nothing but a drum machine and a couple synths - no sequencing and just a lot of tape overdubs. The tracks contained on this double 12" were all created circa '87 - '88 and where pretty much lost in a basement till Sound Signature label head Theo Parrish came across them and decided to release it some 22 years later. Check the deep and dark jack on "China 2(1)" and "Mechanism(2)," the awesome warehouse grooves on "Red Lightbulb(3)" and "Dedicated(4)," plus the evil jacking beats on "The Unknown(5)." Intense! AOS aka Omar-S gave the tapes some touching up in the studio and voila! Here you have a rare slice of Chicago house music at its rawest essence. 5 tracks over 2 12"s. Recommended.

Cubic Zirconia
Fuck Work (Nacho Lovers, Dam-Funk) 12"
NYC band's housey debut single featuring some big remixes
Cubic Zirconia is a live dance band composed of Tiombe Lockhart, Nick Hook, Todd Weinstock and David Strudivant. "Fuck Work(1)," their first single, is as good an example of vox populi as I've ever heard. Sure, they might not be going out on any limbs, but who can't agree with that title? The other thing CZ has going for them is an impressive Rolodex, and they definitely flexed it here. Dam Funk contributes his signature vintage boogie sound(2), Fool's Gold's Nacho Lovers put a vintage house sound on the track(3), and Andy George(4) and Dekker & Johan(5) all contribute dance remixes as well. Five tracks totalackaged in a nice looking pic sleeve. Recommended.

Josh Patrick
Jessie's Girl (Rick Springfield) 12"
dj friendly remix of 80s hit
Josh Patrick is serving up some high quality, extra sharp cheddar on this here plate. Yes, cheddar as in that tasty orange cheese from upstate, as well as cheddar as in money. Yes! Rick Springfield's grade school favorite "Jesse's Girl(1)," freshly enhanced by the latest in digital technology, is now available for easy and efficient delivery to liquored-up dancefloors everywhere. Check the highly mixable intro and outro, the brilliant guitar solo edits, the ingenious synth flourishes. This isn't so much a re-mix as an easy-to-play edit: everyone will recognize the song within three bars and you'll have drunk girls on the table within a measure. Drop this track and you may hate yourself for a minute, but your crowd will love you forever. On the flip, however, there's ample opportunity to redeem your tainted soul with a highly respectable and electro-fied playout of the Flirt's not-quite-so-famous "Dangerous(2)."

Josh Patrick
Space Age Love Song (Flock of Seagulls) 12"
dj friendly remix of 80s hit
Josh Patrick is one at the best at creating unpretentious DJ versions of 80s classics. How can you explain this awesome dub remix of "Space Age Love Song(1)"? A great mixable drum starts it, then a slow filter job reveals the original to everyone's surprise. Josh Patrick gets heavy into the versioning, looping and adding his own more modern synth lines. After a big breakdown part, we finally get a piece of the vocals and it's a sweet, hands in the air moment. B-side features a remix of FC Kahuna's "Nothing is Wrong" (an early 2000 electro-rock track).

pumping funky house grooves
A true master of pumpin' high energy house music, DJ Sneak is never one to let the crowd down. Dance heads know his releases are fire and his recent Back In The Box house compilations have been consistent best sellers. Enter this mysterious 12" featuring supposedly lost DAT tapes of undiscovered Sneak gems. No idea why these were never released before because the raw energy in these tracks in incredible. They definitely must have been sitting around somewhere for some time too because there is a definite grittiness to the tracks that is certainly old school. Check the funky sample and jack styles with tracks like "Ahh Baby(1)," "Feeling Freaky(2)," "La Sneak Le Spankers (3)," and "Yeah Come On(4)." Make the crowd loose control with this! Recommended.

Night Crawlers / Frankie Knuckles
Push The Feeling On / Tears 12"
re-pressed house classics
Ahhh, a nicely pressed "unofficial" vinyl 12" of "Push the Feeling On(1)" by Nightcrawlers. It's days like this when I love the Lab. We got this as a promo from one of our Trew New York boot connects a few weeks ago and I immediately jumped out of my seat and went over to the turntable when I heard the mixable drum intro. I had made a digital edit of this with a mixable intro, but to have it on vinyl is a sweet treat. And the drums are really clean on this version. I was playing my edit out with Monk a few months back and he came over to the DJ booth drunk but still lucid, and professed his love for the tune even though he "hated this song when it first got big, but now it's a classic!" I don't know if it's just my getting older, but I feel that way about more and more songs lately. And interestingly, when this song originally came out in the early 90s it was an underground hit before being re-released two years later with cheesy vocals which shot it straight up the charts and into the hate column of purists like Monk. My advice with this one is to mix it with "Show Me Love" because sometimes predictability is good. For example when I hear someone rocking Mtume in the club and they don't follow it up with "Juicy" it makes me want to grab a mic and start a belligerent DJ Premier style tirade abouts how most DJs are phonies and have no fundamental understanding of music. The a-side (but a Tkat b-side) is the Frankie Knuckles produced early house classic "Tears(2)" with vocals by Robert Owens of Fingers, Inc. and production help from future Def Mix associate Satoshi Tomiie. When I put this on today the entire Shipset became insecure about their sexuality which means this song will kill in a club where there are women and gay men (a good club).

rare 80s house classics
Collection of rare house classics. A-side features the Ron Hardy mix(1) of The It's "Donnie" from 1986. B-side leads with an obscure Trax release from Santos, and their Frankie Knuckles remix tucked away on the B2 of the "Work The Box" single (also from 1986). The side closes with the original version(3) of Virgo's "Do You Know Who You Are(3)," apparently the rarest of the set (also my pick of the three). High quality pressing, recommended.

You Are Not Alone (Frankie Knuckles Remix, Mr.K Edit) 12"
deep house remix of MJ, classic house on the flip
So basically this is a deep house version of "You Are Not Alone(1)," but really it's more like a meeting of the masters on wax. First off, it's MJ (who can deny MJ?), remixed by house legend Frankie Knuckles, THEN edited by edit maestro numero uno Danny Krivit (aka Mr. K). And if you wanna get real picky, the track was written by R. 'Kels' Kelly! So yeah, cop it and play loudly in your next MJ or house set and watch the floor get deep. Marshall Jefferson
Move Your Body (The House Music Anthem) 12"
Not for nothing did "Move Your Body(1)" gain the subtitle of "The House Music Anthem" - its classic refrain of "gotta have house... music/ all night long" is one of the most memorable in all of dance music, familiar not just to househeads but club-goers of every stripe. From the thundering piano vamps of the intro (used to great effect in the film 24 Hour Party People when they are entering the Hacienda club) to the keyboard stabs that drive the bulk of the song, "Move Your Body" is one of the most perfect encapsulations of the early Chicago house sound. Raw drum machines and gospel-influenced piano & vocals at their finest. If you're a house DJ, you have no excuse for not owning this; and if you're a civilian, come on in and join the party. Flip side doesn't let up either with Jamie Principle's electro-sexy speak "Baby Wants To Ride(2)" which sounds as relevant as ever.

KC Flightt
Voices 12"
"Voices(1)" is one of the ultimate house classics, brought to us by KC Flight who also responsible for the NY anthem "Let's Get Jazzy." "Voices" can be considered the original tribal house track- it's built upon primitive drumming and Indian chanting that would make anyone's hairs stand straight up. The track intensifies when the oh so famous chorus (originally sung by Sting) comes in. By this time the beat is mesmerizing you with the "dom, dom, dom, dom," all up in your face and KC doesn't stop until all you can think, sing, and breath is "Voices...Inside my head...Echoes...Things that you said." On the flip is "Cabana(2)," a track that reminds us of when house was just house - simple and to the point. With a scatty vocal dub that stabs in and out of the track with a little piano riff, you just keep getting pulled deeper and deeper into this one.

Love To The World / The Bomb (Kenny Dope) 12"
It's an odd pair of tunes to share a single piece of wax, but it made me and Alison happy. Alison's been trying to find you guys a good pressing of the mid-school Kenny Dope house essential "The Bomb(1)" while I've been looking for the epic Mr. K edit of LTD's "Love To the World(2)" since Plant Life dropped their last single. The Plant Life tune is based around the pinnacle breakdown guitar riff in the LTD soul disco anthem, a section that our dean of editors naturally extends with expertise. "The Bomb," aka "These Sounds Fall Into My Mind," is just an insane rhino trouncing all music around it and squeezing your cheeks back like in those air force test films. Fffwwwah!!

Daniel Wang
The Best of Balihu Records 1993-2008 Pt.1 2LP
incredible comp from respected disco house label, pick
The Balihu label was way ahead of its time. Wang started the well respected disco-house label back in 1993 with the now classic "Look Ma No Drum Machine" EP, and has kept the quality of the music consistent for well over a decade and a half! An impressive feat to say the least, but the releases really speaks for themselves - tributing to the disco music of the past while adding just the right amount of modern touches to make it work on the dancefloor. This compilation collects the best tracks released during the label's 15+ year existence. All the Wang classics, plus many slept-on sides are on here including "Like Some Dream(1)," "Warped(2)," "East Village Hustle(3)," "The Twirl(4)," "In The Street(5)" (that borrows a sweet synth line from a very famous gangsta rap song!), " and the epic "Let's Go To Mars(6)." Hats off to the guys at Rush Hour for making this amazing compilation happen. 11 tracks total spread over 2LPs with highly detailed liner notes about the creation or inspiration of each track. Highly Recommended.

Thriller Allstars Remixes (Dirty Funker, Red Kult) 12"
Allstars electro house remix of one of MJ's biggest sureshots!
Groove Exclusive! 3 pumped up remixes of MJ's powerjam "Thriller" from The ALLSTARS(Dirty Funker, James Doman, Paul Emmanuel & Ben Churchill). This will mosey it's way into any electro house set like butter. Although, Dirty Funker's wobbley rave techno version (2) and Red Kult's mix(3) twitchy electro version will get all the Halloween freaks going, the original(1) is kinda the bomb. It treats the track in a Fred Faulke meets Treasure Fingers way, extending the break and beefing it way up with house drums, the "Close your eyes" loop and synthy stabs. Perfect timing for Halloween.
