Beat Boys
S/T (Brazilian-Argentine Psyche) CD

Originally from Argentina, the Beat Boys rose to prominence in Sao Paolo in the 1960s after being discovered by Caetano Veloso and Gilbert Gil in a night club. While they spent their career in the epicenter of the Tropicalia movement, the Beat Boys are an obscure footnote today. After only moderate commercial success, their mentors Veloso and Gil were detained (quite unlawfully), and the band failed to survive without their friends and connections to Sao Paolo's music scene. This CD raises from the depths the entire recorded output of the Beat Boys, their 1968 self-titled LP as well as a single, "Torta De Morangos(1)." American classic rock influences are very pronounced on songs like "O Meu Tamborim(2)" and "Wake Me, Shake Me(3)." The most curious cut here is probably their adaptation(4) of J.S. Bach's "Aria" from Overture No. 3 in D Major (you know this one, even if you think you don't). Includes detailed liner notes that tell the history of the band and the parts of the Tropicalia movement. 13 tracks total, 38 minutes.

New official double-vinyl press of arguably the best Jurassic 5 release. There's been several versions with different tracklistings floating around. However, this is the "full" version featuring 13 tracks including J5 favorites like "Lesson 6(1), Concrete Schoolyard(2), Jayou(3), Quality Control(4)," and "Improvise(5)." Pretty much essential for hip-hop heads.

Can We Rap 12"

This EP from Now Again collects all the known work (a total of 4 tracks) recorded by deep funk enigmas Carleen and the Groovers. Led by Carleen on drums (who gets plenty of solo work) and her brother Clary on trumpet, they produced just two 7"s, but mighty fine 7s they are. The group is typically JB-influenced (especially on the vocals), but the tracks have some real unique sounds and so many breakdowns you just can't refuse. Includes "Can We Rap(1), Right On(2), The Thing(3)" and "Hot Pants(4)."

Fool's Gold debut from the Bay Area rapper/producer

Highly anticipated Fool's Gold debut from Bay Area rapper/producer Trackademicks. Trackademicks has been making waves for years via mixtapes, remixes and original productions so it's about damn time he got some official shine. "Enjoy What You Do" is an uptempo Bay Area slapper, that sounds like a hip-house track dipped in hyphy sauce. Flosstradamus step up to the remix plate, injecting some rave juice into the original by adding big synth stabs and stuttered vocals. Trackademicks' label mate Sammy Bananas brings a little disco into the picture with an old funk break and some seriously big basslines. The single also features "Topsidin," a more subdued hip-hop track, built on a moderate tempo from layered ethereal synths. Also included is the clean version for "Enjoy What You Do" and instrumentals for both tracks. Recommended.
