At the Turntable Lab store, you have no idea how many people come in looking for what they think is "hot" based on the Daily Arrivals page: dozens (it's a small store). But there's also a small percentage of people coming in...   expand review  asking what I think is hot, which is usually very different. When these people come in, I'll pull a random disco 12, something with girly vocals like Broadcast, and whatever new Kitsune record we have. This is because after hearing the Midnight/Love/X comps, I have finally broken down and accepted that this French label is, in the words of Blu Jemz's girlfriend (when describing Roger Yamaha) a "tastemaker." Their history of showcasing quality dance-oriented songwriters has become their reputation, and this newest comp continues the tradition. The lead-off track (1) alone was enough to make me get this, but the album is chock full of top shelf sunglasses bump. If you're a fan of e*vax, Out Hud, or throttling German trannies to death on bullet trains, you will find something here. Tracks like Popular Computer's "Clone Age(2),and Italian X-Rays' "Strip Down(3)" give you three ways to get your Transporter 2 on, but there's also the minimal playground of Metronomy and the previously released remix of "Night On Fire(4)" by Carlos "My Herpes Just Cleared Up!" D. Another strong outing by Kitsune. 13 tracks total. -the Woodman

The young gunna DJ Sega out of Philly has had folks' jaws dropping for a minute with his left field Bmore club tracks and a string of self-released mixtapes; now he's getting major cosigns from no less than four labels (Mad Decent,...   expand review  Counterfeet, Ol' Head, Flamin' Hotz) and is about to open a lot more eyes with his tracks on the new Hollertronix EP. But before that, we get this - an official mix CD (nice packaging and all, #2 in the 51:51 Mix Series) featuring remixes from Sega and Tim Dolla, plus Jersey's DJ Tameil and Bmore godfathers Rod Lee and KW Griff. The name pretty much says it all - the "Rockstars" side of the mix features 16 tracks of pure gouda rock (Nirvana, Genesis, Papa Roach, Supertramp, Bon Jovi) in the Bmore stylee, while the "Clubheadz" section has 12 less guilty pleasures (T-Pain, Busta, R.Kelly, Beyonce, 50 Cent, MJ). Seeeegaaaaaa... 28 tracks total. Recommended. -Larri Byrd

Environ
format: 12"

lab price: $9.00

item #: dm-2445

Baby Oliver pretty much came out of nowhere, and their last release on Environ rocked the entire office, even me, the guy that typically doesn't like this kind of stuff. As is a growing trend with things lately, pitched down, weird vocals...   expand review  seem to be all the rage, and "Feelings 2(1)" does it up properly. The New Order-esque chorus fits in surprisingly well between the wacky verses, and those dirty drums really sell the track. "Shot Caller(2)," on the other hand, is a little more on the abstract tip. More DFA than Environ, this one is definitely a power track, but you definitely would have to use it sparingly. Don't drop this one in every set or you'll be pegged for a one-trick pony - that's just how different this track sounds. -minimal man

This might be the weirdest gang of remixers ever assembled on a single 12". 33Hz have invited all their friends along to remix "Paris, Texas," their new track featuring the transatlantic duo of Devin The Dude and TTC's Teki Latex. And remix...   expand review  it they did! In fact, Gentlemen Drivers lead off with a version that bears almost no resemblance to the original. Curtis Vodka's synthy, housed out remix(1) keeps more vocals in tact, but Architecture In Helsinki(2) own the A-side with their quirky and minimal (yet irresistibly melodic) style. Flip it over and - surprise! - In Flagranti(3) turns in the strongest remix of the bunch, tossing the original's vocoder'ed hook over a strutting new disco beat with a killer bassline. Also includes a grimey electro remix from Max Pask(4). Check the 7" for the original version and yet another remix. -Larri Byrd

Paris' fine Kitsune label delivers the best of their consistent yet eclectic output, with this CD version, beefed up 11 tracks on one disc. Dj Gregory's afro-house monster "Attend(1)" deserves top billing, one of last year's biggest house records that got play...   expand review  by djs across the stylistic board from soulful NYC-style heads to big-room Euro-types. Essential stuff. Everything is worth checking as well: Alan Braxe & Fred Falke's "Love Lost(2)," a wistful take on Braxe's earlier French filter house sound, Ernest Saint Laurent's "Perfect Love(3)," which is also on the pretty, synth-driven '80s tip, Shakedown's "Lovegames"(4)," Playgroup's "Hooked On U(5)" and Lacquer's "X."11 tracks in all, cool cover art. -Language

Zongamin is a lab favorite - we were all put onto him by another Lab favorite, former employee Roger Yamaha. Zongamin (and labelmate Justice) is rapidly rising in the electro-punk-rock world with every track he puts out. His label, the French Ed...   expand review  Bangers imprint, also executes the singles perfectly, delivering excellent selections and cool kid covers. "Bongo Song(1)" is immediately justifies all the hype with awesome percussion and death metal type bass work. Mr. Flash comes in with a super-twisted remix(2) infusing BDP and chopping up the percussion even further. Recommended. -the mgmnt

France is on fire! Between the Institubes, Arcade Mode, Ed Banger and, of course, Kitsune labels, FR easily has the strongest collective dance music section in the world. Kitsune's third comp in their Maison series does nothing to disprove that theory, full...   expand review  as always with brand new tracks and the best from their recent 12" releases. There are some really strong players emerging out of the Kitsune stable - folks like Simian Mobile Disco (who you undoubtedly know from Kanye West's favorite video) and Fox N Wolf really shine here with the NIN-gone-disco vibes on "I Believe(1)" and sickeningly sweet twee singalong on "Youth Alcoholic(2)," respectively. Suddenly high-profile remixer Boys Noize has a new original production here with the Daft Punk homage "Feel Good(3)," and Oh No! Oh My! are a really interesting hybrid of frantic beats, folky acoustic guitars and vaguely disillusioned-yet-passionate, Joy Division-ish vocals on "I Love You All The Time(4)." Kitsune strays from their nor
