Disco D was a couple years ahead of his curve with his Booty Bar label in 2002. Tommy Boy recognized it and parlayed it to a record deal, but sadly, all we got was this 12" and a mix CD (which is...   expand review  a damn good Detroit mix). If you're looking for Disco D production in his prime, I prefer the Booty Bar Anthem EP, but this features one of the key tracks from that release, "Keys To The Whip(1)." Disco D was definitely onto something here with a style later popularized by acts like Spank Rock. Also includes "Detroit Zoo(2)" and "Peon(3)." -the mgmnt

Here it is on official promo wax. You already know that this song is the shit. You know the video is the shit (can never go wrong with a keytars, talkbox, and badass breezys). Pretty much, Snoop is the shit. Mr. D-O-DOUBLE-G...   expand review  nails it in from every angle and in every conceivable way with "Sexual Eruption(1)." From the epic synth intro, the hype-yet-smooth 120BPM beat, to the auto-tune singing style - no one can resist this one. A heavy contender for song of the year for me. Contains instrumental, and the clean "Sensual Seduction." Add to cart now or be sorry later. Recommended. -snackmaster

After we listened to about half of this new Ratatat album here in the office, The Commish leaned over to me and said: "Man, I keep waiting for a whiny indie rock male vocalist to come in! This is great!" Indeed, the...   expand review  duo's new shit is a pleasant listening experience from front to back – clean, synthy and instrumental, sounding alternately like the soundtrack to the lost level of Castlevania and… uhh, one of those video game song cover bands on Kill Rock Stars. I know you've probably seen these dudes (all bearded and indie rock) and read reviews about how they're so "infectious" and "dancey," but honestly this is just some nice ass headphone music with a steady beat and a mellow temperament. Even the single, "Wildcat(1)" (which makes me think of Eli Cash), isn't super-hype – but it's more than suitable for a little downtempo mixtape/set where you wanna add a little excitement. Tracks like "Swisha(2)" prove Ratatat's worth by swapping out any notion of danceability for a gorgeous, lush spaghetti western update. "Lex(3)" and "Tropicana(4)" show a bit of bombast for the usually restrained pair. Maybe I'm not explaining this well, or making it sound a bit boring… but it's not. For really real. A solid indie LP in a time when solid indie LPs are increasingly hard to come by. 10 tracks; 42 minutes. -Chris Lemon-Red

New mix cd from resident lab reviewer and blog herder Nick Catchdubs. If you checked out his last one (Whats Really?), this continues the pace with clever mixes and blends (don't call them mashups), and undercurrent selections of dancehall, southern-leaning hip hop,...   expand review  a little rock, and other ‘dubsian fun things which defy categorization. Hardly any vocals here are on their original beats, but Oh Snap never sounds forced or eye-rollingly “cheeky.” He's just in there. From his site: “Honestly, I was going to try and make a really straightforward, well-mixed new hip-hop CD with this one- but I couldn't stop from pressing "record" and going all over the place. My shit happens to be weird club music, danceable joints that are a little offbeat for whatever reason. I like remixing and recontextualizing stuff. But it's funny how being diverse can get you pigeonholed as...being diverse.” You got a problem with that? -the mgmnt

Wale's been flying under the radar these last few years, making Go-Go sampling tracks down in DC and getting lots of love from local radio and DJs. But it seems like he won't stay underground long, having just signed with Mark Ronson's...   expand review  Allido label and now releasing this buzz-building mixtape with Fool's Gold co-founder Nick Catchdubs. Before Wale left to be part of Ronson's big international tour, he and Catch cooked this up, a nice 20-track collection of new and exclusive joints "to give people a dope introduction to a dude with a bright future." Check it out as Wale freestyles over Gorillaz' "Kids With Guns," Justice's "D.A.N.C.E.," Lily Ronson's "Smile" y mas. Plus tons of original production, skits and typically skilled mixing from Mr. Catchdini (who recommends checking the live band rework of Q-Tip & Dilla's "Let's Ride" here). Over an hour of music, plus I'm feeling that shoelace logo. Recommended. -Chris Lemon-Red
