The most under-appreciated rap group of all time gets the best-of mixdown treatment from the Rub's big homie! Eleven kills it on this one, spanning the Mash Out Posse's whole career, front to back, early years to Def Jam... and mercifully...   expand review  stopping just short of their current affiliation with Mr. Jackson. Curiously, it's co-released with Spitkicker; and I say curiously because when I think "Spitkicker," I think kufis, and when I think "M.O.P.," I think of shit being broken. Anyway, if you consider yourself an M.O.P. fan, you're gonna want this. Over 75 minutes of M.O.P.! So much yelling! 32 tracks in all. -Chris Lemon-Red

Tuff Gong
format: 12"

lab price: $7.50
available: yes
item #: rr-1819

quick audio picks:  1 2
Massive herbalist anthem with the singalong chorus you know and love ("I want to get hiiiiigh, so high...") on a loud 12-inch. Never seen this cool Jamaican Tuff Gong pressing, dig the muy autentico faded label, very nice, and miracle of...   expand review  miracles it sounds great too. The flipside, though it's labeled as the version, is actually some other inconsequential song. -monk

Money Studies
format: EP

lab price: $8.00
available: yes
item #: lp-2845

quick audio picks:  1 2 3 4 5
Debut release from the new Money Studies series for the working dj, Money Lotion. The idea is to give you guys the best quality remixes and mashups (stuff that will actually kill in the clubs), drawn from the wide pool of inventive...   expand review  djs that Money Studies rubs shoulders with. This first record comes from the infamous Roctakon, the original Lab reviewer who shat on everything, the blog pirate, and one of the best all around club djs we know. Seriously this guy is the guru to a whole generation of Lab employees, he holds residency at a bunch of the top clubs in NYC (those "it" celebrity places that change every six months), he's got super wide music knowledge and dude can dj his ass off. Who else do you want handing you club tested beauties like this? The Roc goes mostly B-more with this one (it's ok people, he's from Maryland), injecting 80s joints with Sing Sing et al, the combination of which is a lightning bolt headed straight for the pelvises of those girls over there by the bar. "Sunglasses At Night"? Hell yes(1)." The "I Don't Want To Lose Your Love" joint(2) is ridiculous too, then you get 2 versions(3,4) of the Cars "Just What I Needed" plus Stevie Knicks and "One Winged Dove" or whatever it's called. -the mgmnt

Greensleeves
format: LP

lab price: $13.50
available: yes
item #: rr-308

quick audio picks:  1 2 3 4
If there's one really crucial Scientist on Greensleeves other than "Rids The World," this is it. "Wins The World Cup"features Scientist at his loosest, in full command of super effects, vocals, layering and just adding bone crushers onto every riddim. Listen to...   expand review  the sample for the dub of "Jacqueline(1)." Roughness! Girl you want discipline. I'm also loving the dub of Johnny Osbourne's "Over 31(2)," Scientist perfect with the vocal cuts, dropping the rhythm in and out like only he can. On the smoother side, the dub of Hugh Mundell's "Red Gold and Green(3)" has always been a favorite and his treatment on Johnny Osbourne's "In Your Eyes(4)" is miles above the semi-annoying vocal version, floating off into space just the way it should be. As usual, production is by Junjo, riddims by the Radics, engineered at Tubby's. Dubs come from Wayne Jarrett (Chip In), Johnny Osbourne (Never Stop Fighting), Hugh Mundell (Mundell). Now available on official Greensleeves repress almost identical to the originals- high quality vinyl pressing and sleeve printing, for the first time in years. 10 tracks total. -the mgmnt

Soul Cal
format: 12"

lab price: $6.00
available: yes
item #: fr-1480

quick audio picks:  1 2
How can you not like this? Great late 70s soul disco reissue on Egon & Peanut Butter Wolf's Soul Cal label. If you aren't into this soul disco shit yet then you better get on it, cuz you're seriously missing out. This...   expand review  record has apparently been highly sought after among collectors and has gone for more than $500! Ellis & Cephas definitely have the Bee Gee-esque vocals, but if that puts you off, don't worry - the funk makes up for it. "I'm Gonna Miss You Girl(1)" is the dancey track here, while "Heaven(2)" is a little moodier with a melodic bassline and some light synth in the background. -rikki
