Heavy Manners
format: CD

lab price: $9.00
available: yes
item #: cd-2705

Uh oh, Heavy Manners in the place! We don't get many culture or dancehall mixes anymore, but with the HM brand involved, plus Sizzla hosting, plus Tribe of Kings' Dash Eye holding it down on the mix, you know we had to...   expand review  get our hands on this one. Fire 'Pon Dem is pure weapons grade, with Dash spinning all the biggest tunes on the most choice riddims: Kingston Town, Tear Drops, Funny Man, Gang War, Bad Dog, Air Waves, Gully Beans, etc. Skip at Heavy Manners also got Sizzla to record dubs of "Praise Ye Jah" and "Smoke The Herbs" down in JA, plus The Rub's DJ Eleven and our own Lab homies Snack & C'mish contributed exclusivo remixes. Includes songs from Movado, Alborosie, Collie Buddz, Busy Signal, Mr. Vegas, Sean Paul, Kiprich, Buju, Beenie, Tony Matterhorn, T.O.K., Ms. Thing, Cham, and of course plenty of Sizzla. Basically, this is heat. Over 40 tracks total. -Chris Lemon-Red

Import-only vinyl version of the debut album from these London youngsters. (Like for real youngsters - they're all 19.) I was skeptical when I heard that their first single, "Navigate, Navigate(1)," was originally made for a runway show, but this record has...   expand review  some legs. Songs like "Numerology(2)" and "En Papier(3)" are catchy and fun as hell with obtuse lyrics and vocals that demand your attention - definitely feeling some influence from fellow Londoners like Wire and The Fall. Also check: the driving paranoia of "Elvis(4)" and dirty drone and drums on "Infinitytinifni(5)." Comes in a fancy foil embossed sleeve. 16 tracks total. -Chris Lemon-Red

Dance Mania
format: EP

lab price: $8.50
available: yes
item #: lp-3608

quick audio picks:  1 2 3 4
The king of Chicago ghetto dance music, brings another round of fast pumping beats for dat ass. Have you seen kids dance to this? It's amazing. Like firecrackers in da pants. "Wouldn't You Like To Be A Hoe(1)" is in perfect timing...   expand review  with the whole Gov Spitzer Ho thang happening. In fact they should splice in video of him to this, "I'm a Ho, he's a hoe, she's a hoe, wouldn't you like to be a hoe too?" Brilliant. "Aceler 8(2)" and "Groove Mode(3)" on the B-side kill it on some raw ghetto beats. The bouncey synth lines are enough to make you wanna backflip. "Dik2small(4)" calls out all the dudes are their wang-size. Not my favorite track. In fact, somewhat should retort with a "Yo Pussy Hella Stank" track, but that kind of meddling could go on forever. Not the fullest tracks, but great mixing tools. -C'mish

Honest Jon's

Not so much a remix as a reinvention of Tony Allen's "Losun," "Sankofa(1)" is just another addition to the ever-expanding lore of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. How does everything these guys make wind up feeling meaningful and life-affirming? Anchored by solid percussion with...   expand review  more mesmerizing solos than I can count, chalk this up as another hit for the brothers. On the flip, former Sun Ra collaborator Salah Ragab and his Afro-Egyptian Ensemble put a jazzy big band spin on Allen's "Ole(2)" and "One Tree(3)." Plays at 45. -Larri Byrd
