BLK JKS Lakeside 10"
format: 10" lab price: $9.00 available: yes item #: lp-3501	quick audio picks: 1 2 I'm not saying this to be a dick, but seriously: buy this single now or weep next year. BLK JKS are a four piece band from South Africa whose dark-yet-bouncy melodies, layered harmonies, impressive guitar work and rhythm section already have them... expand review being courted by some labels which I'm not at liberty to name (but you've definitely heard of). If I'm sounding like a hype machine right now, just listen to "Lakeside(1)" and tell me I'm wrong. Diplo met these guys in an airport last year and came back telling me how awesome they were based on this track alone. I can't say I disagree. B-side features an early track, the downtempo/rap hybrid "One Must Die(2)." I'd keep going, but I think the music sells itself on this one. One time pressing of 500 copies, each in a hand-stamped sleeve. Recommended. -Larri Byrd

Modular format: CD lab price: $11.00 available: yes item #: cd-2733	quick audio picks: 1 2 3 4 5 The term "highly anticipated" gets tossed around a lot, but it might actually be an understatement in the case of the new full-length from Cut Copy. This shit is already #1 on the Australian charts... okay, you probably only have to sell... expand review like 30 copies to top the said chart, but this is a great little record which quite a few people have been salivating for. "Little" isn't the right adjective actually, as Cut Copy (with help from DFA's Tim Goldsworthy on production) step up with some epic future/retro dance sounds - check the new version of "Hearts On Fire(1)," the intense "So Haunted(2)," "Nobody Lost, Nobody Found(3)," album opener "Feel The Love(4)" and the alternately jangly/squelchy disco jam "Lights & Music(5)." Comes with a big fold-out insert designed by Australia's Alter. 15 tracks, 50 minutes. -Chris Lemon-Red

The Monks Rock Me 7"

Listenining to "Rock Me(1)" proves that though they are best known for creating the b-boy classic "Champ" under the Mohawks moniker, the Monks' have more gems hidden... expand review in their catalog. "Rock Me" is a delicious piece of rocksteady hammond funk, with crispy drum breaks to boot. Flipside features Roland Alphonso's "Hip Hug Her(2)" which continues the groove in the same vein, but the Monks' track is the winner for me. -snackmaster

Frankie's version takes on almost a Larry Levan-ish feel, landing between the original's disco-funkiness and... expand review more housey territory thanks to the combo of sharp, gated drums and soulful vocals from Ricky Dillard. For non dance heads, proceed directly to the original by the amazing Billy Paul - great vocals, soaring horns and strings, and it's funky as all get-out.
