Don't let the school lab look of the Grados mislead you. These are serious headphones designed for audiophiles and those who demand quality sound. The SR-60s in particular have gained a "legendary" status (given by stereo magazines), because of their incredibly low...   expand review  price and "vibrant fidelity." Fi Magazine called them "the greatest bargain in audio-dom... with a rich sound which can civilize even a cheap portable CD player." Stereophile magazine gave it both the Product of the Year award in accessories and budget component category. For practical applications, the SR-60s (as well as the SR80 and SR125) are excellent for home or portable use (works well with iPods), and in-house djing. (We wouldn't really recommend this for club djing because of low isolation and medium-build construction). The swiveling ear pieces are very conducive for cueing. I have also heard from several sources that Grados are excellent for headphone mastering. Grado defines the particular characteristics of the SR60 as: good bass, excellent resolution, very smooth sound. Comfort-wise the Grados are very light on the head with low pressure and comfortable foam ear pieces. Comes with 1/4" adaptor for mini plug. -the mgmnt

This is the true dope right here. If you're a true fan of graffiti, you know that all these graffiti books coming out have already been trumped by the original Subway Art book by Henry Chalfant(Style Wars director) and Martha Cooper. The...   expand review  book illustrates that old school NYC was the illest breeding spot for styles and the "war" for the freshest was really what was kept the culture growing. Instead of covering the same angles, this book thoroughly elaborates on what Subway Art barely touches upon - the characters. Finally, David Villorente and Todd James(Reas) gives the subject the attention it deserves. Starting from it's humble beginnings in the 70's and 80's new wave, punk, disco had the underground on fire and hip hop was just being born. This is where subway art was becoming a culture in NY and although letter styles were taking the forefront, the characters also played an important role. Look at the impact grafitti art has had on pop culture today, it's obvious how important characters actually were. Barry McGee, Kaws, Mode they're all known today for they're characters(some are trademarked)...Shit, I'd even go as far to say that Bratz was inspired by graf! In any case, this book breaks down the science and psychology of the character's role and interviews many of the pivotal writers old and new that brought it to popularity. A perfect look for the graf enthusiast that's read about everything there is on the subject. -Cmish

Wow, what can you even say about a book like this? Breathtaking and intimate full color snapshots of early surf culture fill up every page, and with each one you feel you're looking at a time and place that's completely gone now,...   expand review  never to return. It's like getting to peep a time traveler's slideshow from his vacation to the past, because Jeff Divine took pictures back then that would look right at home in, say, Vice today. Divine grew up in late 60s / early 70s La Jolla, when surfers still effortlessly bore the trademarks that surfers ever since have mimicked: cooool long hair, board shorts, moustaches, generally not giving a fuck. Aside from a brief introduction, the pictures are left to do all the talking, and that's a great thing. Divine's photos capture everything from standard big wave fare to cosmic vans being hand-detailed, spectators watching a heat, or my favorite - the sloppy, hand-painted sign reading "NO UNLOCALS - IF YOU DON'T LIVE HERE DON'T SURF HERE." If I had a coffee table, I'd put this on it. Approx. 100 pages. -Chris Lemon-Red

Many people consider this their favorite battle record. Simplest, most effective layout. Includes "stop frontin' and use your head" beat. Two of the nicest skratch sentences that include "scratching... what is it; uh... raang.... it's fresh; break it down like this." Hours...   expand review  of skratching enjoyment ( = less time beating off). Buy 2 copies. Classic. -the mgmnt

Young Rob Nesta and the Wailers tackle the bubblegum pop standard "Sugar Sugar(1)" inna rocksteady style. Flip is "Don't Rock My Boat(2)," later famously re-recorded as "Satisfy My Soul." -monk

Could this one be bigger than "Come Around?" I don't know, but I just got back from a couple weeks DJing in the Caribbean (I know, it's a tough life) and this track was absolutely murdering it everywhere. Though it's been out...   expand review  for a while now, it's still gaining mainstream steam over here. Regardless of popularity (and it's huge), "Blind To You(1)" is one monster of a song: righteous lyrics, cool and deadly rhythm, plus an addictive hook (it only takes a couple listens before you'll be shouting "I'm blind to you haterrrrrrz!" at everybody). Recommended? Hell yeah. -monk

Mad Decent
format: CD

lab price: $10.00

item #: cd-2622

Blaqstarr had a good 2007 (signed with Mad Decent, int'l touring styles, beats for M.I.A. and Young Leek) but it sounds like he's got some mindblowing shit lined up for 2008. Lots of new classics ("Supastarr," "Shake It To The Ground") and...   expand review  unreleased tracks on King of Roq, the mixtape/album which was self-released last summer in an edition so small that it barely made it out of Bmore. Most of the songs are laced with the man's inimitable vocal styles, and all have that patent pending bizarre minimal vibe. The best new bits are the re-teaming of Blaq and Woodie from Dru Hill (aka RoqStarrz) on "Let's Go," plus genuinely strange tracks like "Allday" and "I Wanna Touch." I've heard this likened to a Bmore version of Stankonia, and while I don't think it's quite on that scale, it still proves Blaqstarr will be a force to be reckoned with for a while yet. As if that needed proving. 31 tracks, 63 minutes. Recommended. -Larri Byrd

Now available on CD at the nice price! Mad Decent's most loaded release to date. Diplo called in the Justice League of remixers for this one. If you heard Blaqstarr's Supastarr EP, you know he's not your typical Bmore producer. No gimmick...   expand review  tracks here, just dark, crazy original production. "Shake It To The Ground" has been begging for remixes from the start, with its minimal beat and 17-year old Rye Rye's crazy flow. Current remix king Switch and NYC's Santogold team up for a fucking bonkers kuduro-flavo(u)red mix(4), which interpolates... well, you'll know when you hear it. Drop The Lime's remix (2) has been getting tons of play - I used to think this dude was all Kid606, but this is hot as hell and totally ready for the club. All this, plus the original(3) and a dirty, bassy mix from SF's Claude VonStroke(1). -Larri Byrd
