I want to get this out up front. I know Ticklah on a personal level. That being said, I can honestly say I was a fan of his music before becoming a fan of the man. I only disclose...   expand review  this because to understand why this tune is so special, you have to understand a bit about the mind of who it comes from. Ticklah is Victor Axelrod. Roots reggae producer and remixer extraordinaire, original member of the Dap-Kings, keyboardist for Antibalas and Chico Mann, starting power forward for Mark Ronson's session squad, co-producer of "Dub Side of the Moon," and all around salty Brooklyn native who mostly can't mess with new music except for Timbaland club joints. He is deep in the game. He'll play with Sharon Jones for a sold out crowd at the Apollo one night, then turn around and DJ in exchange for a Mediterranean personal pizza and a Maker's Mark at a dead reggae party the next night. He'll tickle a vintage Juno in a cozy sweatbox full of visionary Latinos in LA one night, only to be on call to caress a Steinway at the Grammy's backing up Amy Winehouse the next. Dude is legit. He still bounces his tracks down to tape, but not so that he can say in interviews, "I'm keeping it real, cuz I still use tape....Byaaaaaaah!" He does it because he "just can't fall asleep knowing that the bass and drums could sound so much tougher if I just took the extra time." It's with meticulous detail and drive that his productions come to fruition. And what you get is a song like "Rescue Me(1)" with Mikey General, Luciano's first lieutenant who is best known for his hit, "Mis' Taylor Boy." Mikey's rich, buoyant melodies sit perfectly atop Ticklah's thick, but not overpowering blend of bubbling bass, tightly compressed snare hits, bright organ stabs, and masterful wood block and tambourine work. Seriously, he even puts in work on his percussion. This is one of the most uplifting tunes you're going to hear, but damn if it's not rough and rugged too. Jah love is a beautiful thing, but Babylon best run for cover when Ticklah dresses the real roots in combat boots. At the most fundamental level, T is just doing a simple thing. He is making music that sounds like the music he loves. And fortunately for us, the music he loves comes from a time in reggae when Roots Radics were killing all the riddims and King Tubby was freaking them to the edge of the ionosphere. Here's to many more productions where this love filled, haterade gulping purest manages to channel both. -Telekinetic Kat
