Freddy Fresh The Rap Records: 2nd Edition Book
lab price: $29.00 available: restocking item #: bk-1148	Incredible. Freddy Fresh already had me with the first edition of "The Rap Records" thinking he was the ultimate database for hip-hop records, but with volume 2 he's really taken it to the limit. This revised 2nd edition is more than double... expand review the size of the original (266 pages now 743 pages!) and features a shit ton more records (now expanded to include the mid-90's, British and foreign records) listed by label and way more full color label scans (at least 3 or 4 per page - over 2,500 total). Each release includes matrix numbers, year of release, and sometimes notes to tell different pressings apart. Freddy has even instituted a five star rating system of rarity for records that are particularly rare, and prices for records that catch loot. This is an invaluable resource for Djs, collectors, or anyone who has a passion for hip-hop. I don't care how much you think you know about rap records from '79-'9X, Freddy's gonna take you to school with this one. 743 pages, full color. Highly Recommended. -snackmaster

Platinum Pied Pipers On A Cloud 12"
Ubiquity format: 12" lab price: $7.50 available: yes item #: lp-3737	quick audio picks: 1 2 3 It's been a minute since we've heard from PPP, but Waajeed and Saadiq are finally back with a fresh new sound for their latest 12". "On A Cloud(1)" is the lead single off their upcoming "Abundance" album that catches Waajeed and Saadiq... expand review with new vocalist Karma Stewart on a retro-modern Motown sound that is just dripping with Detroit soul. The production is so infectious and authentic with its catchy horns and driving drums behind Karma's powerful vocal chords, it just stirs up your soul making it hard to sit still while listening to it. On the flip, "Angel(2)" does the same kinda thing (makes you wanna get up out your seat), but on an uptempo, high-energy rock and soul tip. Coultrain takes the vocals this time and he's well suited for the job, while the backing band busts the dynamic cosmic rock style with honors. These are both major jumps in sound from their "Triple P" days, but I'm not complaining - can't wait to hear the full album! Also features the Trackademicks remix(3) of "On A Cloud" that blends the soulful vocals with a more club friendly electro-soul bump. -snackmaster

Akoya Afrobeat Fela Dey 12"
Tip of the Iceberg format: 12" lab price: $8.00 available: restocking item #: lp-3555	quick audio picks: 1 2 Akoya continues to ride their wave of momentum right now by dropping the second single from their forthcoming album, P.D.P. (President Dey Pass). In true Afrobeat fashion, they do it in the form of a pair of quick little thirteen minute... expand review ditties. "Fela Dey(1)" begins just the way it should, slowly building in complexity with horn arrangements chasing themselves around the track while nice steady guitar and percussion work provides the anchor. The keys and drums then play a little friendly game of tug o' war until the tension releases with an explosion of vocals and horns. Once the groove sets in you be lulled into a very special state where everything begins to blend together, but without feeling directionless or repetitive. The flip features "Wahala(2)" which fans of the Budos will immediately connect with. That tight looseness in the intro just sets things in the right direction. I get the strong feeling from Akoya that they are not trying to rush their ideas or put too many in one song. Everything seems to get proper space to breathe and develop and if anything I almost want some of their songs to stretch out a little more. That says a great deal considering one of my biggest criticisms of all the "Afrobeat" groups that have popped up in the last handful of years is that some of them tend to make some long-ass songs that don't go anywhere just because they know that Fela brought the super-extended heat. So here's to Akoya's continued evolution and their long-ass songs that could actually stand to be a little longer. -Telekinetic Kat

On "Sweet Soul(1)," Spinnerty re-purposes vocals from Dem Suite frontwoman Elliott Peck over a sparse but effective drum loop with subtle touches of bass, guitar and... expand review twinkling keys underneath.
