 Just as Diplo killed it on MIA's Piracy Funds Terrorism mix that dropped before her debut, he does it again with Brooklyn's own Santogold, mixing up jams off her recent debut album. Expect to hear exclusive blends and mixes of her singles,...   expand review  masterfully executed by Diplo himself. The styles flow smoothly from everything under the sun: dirty south, club, classic cuts, dance tracks, dancehall, dubstep, reggae and more. What's also cool is that although she's signed to a big label like Downtown, this is a Mad Decent pressing. So props to Diplo for making this happen. Expect to hear shit from Santi (duh), XXXchange, Ratatat, Richie Spice, Three 6 Mafia, B-52's, Kid Cudi, Switch, Radioclit, Benga, Tony Matterhorn, Skream, Warrior Queen, Barrington Levy, and more. Check the tracklist (which reads kind of like "hot list" of the moment) with songs from the likes of Hercules & Love Affair, Muscles, Zongamin, Holy Ghost!, Midnight Juggernauts, Hot Chip, In Flagranti, The Kills, and The Presets with some notable classics thrown in for good measure (Jonzun Crew, B-52s, Human League, etc.) If you're into indie-dance, electro, and modern dance stuff, you can't go wrong with this mix. Heliocentrics opened the doors for a whole new kind of funk movement this year, and Now-Again is about to blow that door into a portal with this release. Introducing Karl Hector & The Malcouns. The band is a kind of super group...   expand review  comprised of the leader of the Funk Pilots, Karl Hector, plus Jay Whitfield from Poets Of Rhythm and Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija, the founders of longtime Soul Fire associates the Malcouns. The result is a kind of funk gumbo that blends psychedelic, Afro-beat and Southern funk sounds into an entirely new kind of experience. The album is meant to be listened to in its entirety, complete with intros and abstract transitions. Here are my suggestions, but like I said, it's best as a whole. Check the goods: "Nyx(1)," "Followed Path(2)," "Sahara Swing(3)," "Debere(4)," "Jabore Pt. 3(5)," "Mellow - Version(6)," "Rush Hour(7)," and "Passau Run(8)." Listen for impeccable drum kits, thick with funky basslines, classic solos, and a rhythm section that lives for the pocket. Highly recommended. -C'mish

Upstart German label Analog Africa brings us this lavishly packaged collection documenting the fusion of rock, psych, funk, soul and even Latin sounds to the music of 1970s Benin and Togo. The comp's title stems from the fact that bands from the...   expand review  two small African countries took to screaming on their tracks, James Brown style, but don't let that fool you - this is no group of half-assed JB impersonators. Check the dense grooves of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou's "Gbeti Madjiro(1)" or Le Super Borgou De Parakou's soulful shuffle "Congolaise Benin Ye(2)," with chunky funk drums and multiple slinking guitars that sound descended from highlife. More to check: Picoby Band D'Abomey - "Mi Ma Kpe Dji(3)," Napo De Mi Amor Et Ses Black Devils - "Leki Santchi(4)," Orchestre Super Jheevs Des Paillotes - "Ye Nan Lon An(5)."
