Rather than their chunky typography books of past, Initiation is refreshingly thin and digestible. It's oversized format and concise writing highlights the impressive design of this book. Impressively short and precise texts familiarize the reader with the respective subject matter; difficulties of typography are illustrated through simple geometric shapes. For their Funky Excavation full length, the Texas duo of Skin and Rube offer up a gang of funky break-driven productions and... expand review get help from a host of MC's and vocalists. Check the opener "Hydro Soundclash(1)" for a good example of what these dudes are about. "All Right(2)" goes for a more jazzy CTI-style loop featuring conscious party flows from Headkrack, Keynote and Tahiti along with a sweet vocal hook from Laconda Davis. But if you're not too into vocals don't worry - HSS comes proper with the instrumental joints (in fact I actually prefer these). Check the funked-out grooves on "Lone Star Uprising(3)" and "M.J.Q.P.R.J.J.P.(4)," the feel-good dub-disco sounds of "Percy Keeps His Disco Dubby (5)," the uptempo funk burners "Battle Break Africa(6)" and "Shock The Spot(7)," the downtempo moods of "O.S.T. for Zonin(8)" and the skankin' beats of "Heat(9)." 14 tracks total. -snackmaster

For those unfamiliar to the dub-infused electronica of this group, here's the background check. They come from Japan, dwell in Brooklyn and make some of the chillest beats out there. We've carried their... expand review stuff for a while, and their fusion of dub, jazz, downtempo and house has always been a relaxing addition to the shelves. This is their latest release, compiling classic cuts like "Menina - 2007 Mix(1)" and "Lost Nomad," unreleased versions of tracks like "Sleeptalking," "Vanishing Dub(2)," "11217(3)" and "Jupiter Acid(4)." Also includes unreleased tracks, "Sleepless(5) and more dubby killers like "Calm Tribe Mix." It's pretty much a greatest hits comp and then some. With 11 tracks total, that's a whole lot of thick, luscious beats to soak in. -C'mish

He pretty much has a lock on that dub reggae style... expand review of dubstep, keeping the vibe bouncing as well as the soulful progressions and organic structure. Think of Scientist combined with a heavy dubstep style and click on "Nafas(1)," "Rocking Wise(2)" and "Dunes(3)" for a taste of the hypnotic dubby bass riddim. "Dub Step Halal(4)" and "Ride One Final(5)" add a dash of grimey dubstep to the mix for extra bite. For the most part, the tracks are pretty smoked out on this, so be prepared to get your relax on. -C'mish
