I'm going to restrain myself from writing my longest review ever for this toy. I will simply transcribe the conversation that Ak Boogs and I had when it came in. These were my first reactions, I am not claiming any...   expand review  accuracy for my belligerent statements. Real talk. Me: "I don't know... His features are a little too Curious George (The skin tone is accurate, but strangely the product shots that Snack looked up online were mad suspect in the skin-lightening department. Had a brother looking like Nat King Cole on television in the 50s and shit). I'm not feeling the fact that his campaign probably isn't seeing any of this money, either (it's since been confirmed that $1 goes to his campaign for every figure sold online). Why does he have the ill Arsenio finger? I bet these toy-making motherfuckers are a bunch of white boys trying to cash in on one of the most amazing moments in the history of the United States." Ak: "I bet you're still going to buy one, aren't you?" Me: "Two. One for my desk and one for the crib." And on some serious stuff: This country's wealth and power is founded on the stolen labor of enslaved African men and women. This moment in time is probably the closest thing we will experience to a revolution in our lifetimes. I'm not delusional or naive. Barack is real, Michelle is real, the need for change is real. Let's go! -Tkat

LAB EXCLUSIVO DEAL: purchase this CD and receive a free randomly sized Organik shirt (sorry no size requests). The underground downtempo label Organik Recordings releases its biggest title to date with a full length from Mr. Bambu. You can tell he's spent countless...   expand review  hours in the studio finishing up this album. Check the title track(1), a bouncy drum track that hits every part of your brain. Ditto "Like Back In The Old Days(2)" where Bambu delicately twists jazz loops into a compelling cut and paste track. You know he's having fun with it too, witnessed by all the awesome interludes intertwined among the songs (is this a man's bar?). After checking "Lunar Eclipse Style(3)," you'll start to come to the conclusion that this is some next level downtempo. For the b-side, Bambu takes it down a notch, changing the mood to sparse and chilled (kinda like a 90s downtempo record). Check "Dead Man's Organ(4)," and "Swamp Gas Mathematics(5)." 15 tracks with appearances by Jon Kennedy, members of Cyne, and The Stigmata Bros.

3rd 7" release on the highly collectable Care In The Community Recordings imprint. Lark's "Tardis(1)" is a driving instrumental rock number; it sounds like something a band would play at the end of a show to bring the house down. Brendan Lynch...   expand review  provides the remix(2) on the flip. -the mgmnt

2nd 7" release on the highly collectable Care In The Community Recordings imprint. On "Hatbox(1)," Lark does a bluesy hybrid thing, part Tom Waits, part midwestern skate rock. The Bees(2) provide the b-side instrumental remix that's cool as hell. -the mgmnt

An instant Shelter classic. Timmy Regisford takes Jose Feliciano's famous track "Sunny(1)" and turns it into a warm weather dance anthem (yes, I know I've used "classic" and "anthem" within the first two sentences, but this shit is beautiful). Instrumental on the...   expand review  flip. Recommended. -the mgmnt

Sound Signature
format: 12"

lab price: $9.00
available: restocking
item #: dm-1608

quick audio picks:  1 2
Another Sound Signature re-issue, this one is a two tracker from 1999. Starting off is one of my all time favorite Theo tracks, "Overyohead(1)." This is one of his crazy signature tracks that is just dripping with that melancholy Detroit...   expand review  sound he has perfected. It's actually quite atmospheric with subtle beats building as the track goes along (which it does for over 16 minutes) with minor keys and strange vocal samples thrown in. A little hard to play out in a club, but perfect for when you come home in the morning. It's along the same lines of all the tracks featured on his excellent LP on Ubiquity, Parallel Dimensions. The best part of the track comes in at eight minutes, when some keys drop that totally drive the track into brilliance territory. Beautiful. On the flip, "Dance of the Drunken Drums(2)" is another ethereal track, with fucked up drum breaks and wandering melodies throughout. Add another one to your collection, you know you want them all! -Alison Tara
